Communicating with you
Hey, Chris.
Although I disagree with the company policy and don’t like many things about the game, I wanted to just thank you for taking your time to communicate with the playerbase. Your rank is up high in the dev team, and you’ll be a very valuable link between the community and the rest of Anet.
As a developer, I know how hard it is to keep up, but I’m younger and not as experienced as you are. Also, as a dev, I know how hard it can be to just…socialize, and you’re doing a great job.
Thanks, Chris, you’re actually a nice guy!
While I think a great many players also agree, the CDI for guilds was talked about before the patch.
Yeah, but I didn’t care about it then either. CDIs are great, but there is nothing they could do involving guilds that would make the game any better, and the only thing they could do is make things worse (by adding new features that you need to be part of a large guild to benefit from), so I’ve never cared about a guild-based CDI. Before this week, I would have wanted a CDI on the destructive changes to the Traits system introduced in the last feature patch.
This new patch is a major issue though, and they need to have a major sit-down explaining why we shouldn’t hate the things we believe we hate about it. Why should we like the new level-gating system? Why should anyone? Why should we appreciate having to go several layers deep to see what we just sold rather than having it as a top-level option? These are all far more important topics of discussion than anything involving guilds.
To you maybe but the world doesn’t revolve around either you or I. I promised the CDI and we are doing it. There is plenty of awesome stuff that can come from it so it is a pleasure to be able to read what members of the CDI have to say.
if you don’t see the value in it then don’t partake.
Cheers
Chris
It’s sort of like planning a family meeting a week in advance to talk about how the kids could help out mom more around the house. You promise your wife it will get better, and set a date and time. Then, when the promised time comes up, the house catches on fire. Rather than addressing the fire, you stubbornly sit your family down in the burning living room to make good on your promise.
That is the degree of sense you are making. It is such a magnitudinous sign relating to the disconnect between what is going on, and what ANET wants to do.
No. It is nothing like that at all.
Chris
When your customer tells you, flat out, how we as a community currently feel, and you dismiss them, then go further to say ,“your wrong” and leave no input or explanation other then your arrogance and possible pride.
Or it could be a poor analogy which tends to the hyperbolic and doesn’t deserve anything further than “no, you’re mistaken”. You know, like it is.
Did you miss how he (twice) blatantly asked if people wanted to go forward with this or not? And he was told “no, let’s go on”. Not, I’ll note, by me – I told him it might be best to shelve the CDI idea since it was probably just going to turn into a lightning rod for discontent.
Which it has.
Then the definitive thing we as a community know about you is that your in Denial.
Actually, the definitive thing we know about Mr. Whiteside is he’s fairly honest and simple. He doesn’t talk about things he doesn’t know about, he goes to find people who do know about it to ask and if they give him something to report back, he does. That’s why people really liked the CDIs last round – he was motivated to make them work.
And we won’t have the patience for you to go through all 5 steps. So fix things by being one of the first companies to actually take the next step in business and truly listen to your community.
Right now its screaming from bugs/glitches, and hungry and starved for content
So, I’m confused . . . should they be listening to it or simply doing whatever we tell them to in the loudest and angriest voices we can?

No that would be Square/Enix they redid a entire game FF14 from the ground up to satisfy their player base.

I agree with 90% of what you said bro but I think the CDI is looking good atm. Few hick up here and there but trolls will be trolls :/

Sadly, I don’t have all that much faith in the forum community to behave anymore. I like to be proved wrong on that score but . . . I think I’m going to start betting on entropy.
Chris i’d like to play on my new alt with you, but your inbox is full so I can’t send you a PM.
Dear Chris.
I don’t normally post on the forum but as you are making the effort to interact with your community I thought it I would give you my feedback on 9/9 update. FYI GW2 is the only MMO that I play.
Firstly, I like the changes to the Trading Post, various interfaces and the changes you have made to minis. It makes them much slicker and i have already adapted to them.
However I cannot support or endorse the new approach to new characters, the level gating of skills, class features and map features. In the case of many of the scholar classes, it makes them very very difficult to play at lower levels and in fact makes the new player experience worse are you loose the ability to use various skills and tricks that keep you alive. I have walked away from my newish ele character for a while because I feel that you have robbed me of the ability to effectively defend myself and attack with a full range of skills. Not to mention that the effort I put in over the last week or so before the 9/9 patch have has been for naught as you have removed some of my attunement and the combo’s they offer. I feel robbed.
Id be interested in hearing about the User Testing that ANet carried out on this latest release. Did you get any actual players to test the new user experience? Or was it all done “in house”? Don’t get me wrong, the actual implementation of the new patch seems effective and well done, so that’s a win from a dev pov, but from a user experience/customer viewpoint, this is far from your finest hour.
Im not against in game hints and tutorials for new players. But I don’t see why most of that could not be incorporated into the starting instances when a new character is created. As its mostly a single player instance you can pause it to bring up pop up boxes etc to show the various features. That way you teach new players things without disturbing the rest of the game or harming the user experience of vet players.
Additionally when in game, rather than locking off/hiding features in the world such as mining nodes, vistas etc again, why not make bring up a pop up box when you first encounter them? Find your first copper node? Then up pops a box saying “ this is copper node, you can mine it with a mining tool and craft items using the ore. Mining tools are purchasable from NPC vendors” etc. Anyway, you have a official Wiki for the game. New players can always look there for more in depth guides and hints.
Finally, im not sure that locking off your characters personal story behind a level gates is a good idea. One of the attractions of GW is that its that a level of skill is required to play the game. Part of the attraction of it is taking your L20 toon into a L25 instance and being able to win through skill and co-operation with others. By removing this option along with level gating some of the other skills and customisations you are endangering the original ethos of GW2 that skill and gameplay are important and making it more like other, less intelligent MMO’s like WoW. You were praised at release for this approach and recent games like Eldar Scrolls Online were attacked for not having the features you implemented at release. Don’t go messing up what makes this game unique and successful.
I hope that you are taking note of the mood around this update. I personally would give ANet a lot of respect if you listened and rolled back or at the least re-organised some of the new features like the skill and level gating that we are unhappy about. It would prove to us that as a company you are listening and reacting to your users.
Cheers!
Iain

Lol thanks for the clean up but its all good bro the community will be strong!
“Be the change that you wish to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi
You know how we can better discuss the patch? By people being more engaging about what they don’t like and how they feel it doesn’t work rather than parroting “it sucks, fix it”. Or trying to solidify the forum meme of “I could X but I haven’t unlocked it yet”.
It’s incredibly more useful to developers to see someone putting the time to explain why rather than just “i’m dissatisfied”.
Ok, I’ll give it a shot:
Personal Story
One thing I always hated about the Living Story was that it feels like timewarping every two weeks. The Personal Story on the other hand was able to win me over because I could decide when I want to drive my story forward. Now that is gone, now the story comes streamlined and packaged in small bits every time I level 10 levels.
The biggest gripe I have with the new system was that the old system was almost perfectly fine and could’ve been made perfect with just small changes. There is no need to “protect” the player from the story.
And if the rumors are correct, then they’ve cutted out part of the story and rearanged other parts, so they don’t even make sense anymore…
Weapon skills
Same as the Personal Story, I think that the old system was perfectly fine. You unlocked the skills by using the weapon, not by leveling your character.
The old system made more sense, was intuitive and gave us the possibility to use more skills quicker.
Level-up bounty
I really dislike the way they are going with this. They’re locking things we had previously to give them us back later as “reward”. They cut the maps in order to do so and the loot they give for leveling up gives the player a false pretence of how the game is meant to be played. They think that the game centers around getting your character as fast as possible to level 80, when in fact the game should encourage you to explore. Again the old system did this just fine.
Simplified maps
Some key parts about every map gets locked away until you reach a certain level. Skill point challenges, vistas, gathering nodes and goods the heart vendors have to offer.
This again gives the player a false pretence about how the game is meant to be played.
Learning curve
All this changes where introduced to flatten out the learning curve. Someone obviously thinks that a new player is most likely overwhelmed by the game if he first starts. There would be a sight better way to introduce new players to the game:
Tooltips. Lots of them. As example, the downstate shouldn’t be locked until level 5 but should be explained before the player can be downed the first time. There should be a tooltip what the downstate is and what the 4 skills do. The evade mechanic should be explained with tooltips, the map completion should be explained with tooltips, the gathering should be explained with tooltips, everything should be explained with tooltips. And the best part about tooltips: They would be optional.
The reason for all these changes?
In my opinion, ANet aims for getting this game eC or E rated to attract new players.
This would also explain why new Sylvari aren’t naked anymore when they leave the Dream. Young children could obviously get the wrong message…

Chris, please – I know you (anet) are set on doing a CDI, but please don’t pull the silence routine on all that’s wrong with the feature patch.
The silence routine is what caused the whole kittenstorm in the firstplace.
What we desperately need is a central thread to get feedback on the levelling changes, skill locking, story locking, and all the other broken bits of the “feature patch”.
I’ve just barely started having faith in you guys communicating and caring again – don’t kitten it away ignoring the outrage over the current set of mistakes.
Thanks,
Dan
I never post on the forums, but if any time is the right time to start voicing my opinions, it’s now. With that being said, my goal is never to belittle the devs or come here with the sole intention of screaming. I want to be heard. People are more likely to listen to civil, rational thoughts than tantrum throwing. Remember, the devs are people too. They make mistakes just like the rest of us, and they have feelings too. And I want to be able to allow them the courtesy of not feeling attacked. It’s simply not fair to them.
That’s not to say that I’m not extremely upset about the recent update. Because I am. Guild Wars 2 was my first MMO. What made me want to play was the fact that it wasn’t like Warcraft, or whatever other generic MMO you can think of. I saw how much freedom the players were given to learn and experience the game however they wanted and at their own pace, and I genuinely liked that. When I first started playing, I came in with no previous knowledge, unlike many other players who came to GW2 from other games. I had to learn everything. And I liked the way I could learn. The in-game hints gave me all the help I needed to understand what each function was for and how to use it properly. And if I still felt confused, I always had the wiki up in a new tab if I needed to read further. It gave me a sense of pride to be able to say that I truly taught myself and learned everything from the bottom up. So I find these new changes to the leveling system very disheartening. I feel, both as a veteran player and from the perspective of a newcomer (because I was in their shoes once too) that the incentive and the satisfaction of leveling is being stripped down to bare bones. If I were just starting the game for the first time now, I don’t think I’d be able to want to stick with it for very long. Players need their basic skills right away in order to even stand a chance at surviving and putting up a fair fight. The extreme amount of level gating is only going to hinder new players. They won’t be able to really understand their mistakes or learn to play better if they are not allowed to make the mistakes and see why it doesn’t work. The level gating for dungeons still stands as a very valid level gated experience, and they truly are a reward for players who have proved that they know what they’re doing enough to join a group and go into that kind of gameplay. But now, with the level gating being effective as advanced as level 40, new players are less likely to feel welcome in dungeons because they aren’t even allowed to have all the skills they need to succeed in the instance.
But enough talk about the negative. I do want to sincerely applaud the devs for addressing the trading post. I love the new setup, I find it so much more visually appealing and convenient. This is something we’ve needed for a long time, and it’s great to see follow through on it. It’s a step in the sight direction. I just hope to see more steps in this direction, as opposed to more things following the path of the rest of the changes.
Wake up, Tyria!
I remember back on Shaiya, when the community got so annoyed with the patches that the endless threads made the company re-roll the patch.
No point in going that far, but I think Anet should seriously consider at least removing the level restrictions on all the stuff they dumbed down, both storys and skills.
Did they ever consider the people who have over 10 – 20 alts to level? You know the max amount of character slots is 64. Now playing 1 alt is a head ache, so the other 18 non 80 characters that I have, are just gonna remain idle until I move on. No point leveling them or buying gems now if it’s gonna mean I can’t play the way GW2 was originally intended to be played.
No more challenge, only frustration and boredom.

There are definitely bugs and some external miscommunication with the system and I want to listen some more before discussing.
ChrisThis is interesting.
Chris is saying there has been external miscommunication about the new system. Could it be that you guys realize you went too far with the removing of functions and level gating it too extreme, and it was not supposed to dumb down the game quite this much?
Hi Traveller,
No not really. I m referring to some videos etc that aren’t quite factually correct in all areas and thus there are some misconceptions being propagated by those that have not played the through NPE yet.
Chris
You mean the Magic Mike video? I played through the NPE and I found it to be pretty accurate from the point of view of a person playing on an alt.

Well it was at least incorrect in that he claimed the new patch was responsible for not being able to die in the tutorial instance, when that was true at least a year ago, when I discovered it. So not the new patch.
He did show that the compass in the charr area was broken. However, it isn’t broken in Queensdale. It worked perfectly.
So he found a bug and demonstrated it. Whee.

I get that some things are just bugs and are supposed to be account wide unlocks, but which are bugs and which aren’t? I’m under the impression that the weapon skill unlocks are not bugged, and that is my main issue with this feature pack.
I really hope the changes to the PS were a bug as well.

Hi Chris,
I’ve been reading throughout this thread and I’ve come to wonder:
Would it be beneficial for you and the rest of the team, to post aspects of the game that you’re considering working on, and get feed back from the community about which items they would be excited to see first, so that you can allocate the most focus to that area?
For example: Perhaps you guys are thinking about working on a new dungeon, PvE-obtainable armor/skins, Cantha and Guild Halls. Then, you speak to the community and they seem most excited about the Guild Halls, so you dedicate the most resources to that first.
Note: I’m not saying you have to post everything you guys want to work on, but I thought it might increase communication between the Team and the Players and help raise community morale.
Chris (Christopher, C-Dog, Christoph, C-Dizzle, whatever they call you),
I posted this earlier but people disregarded it so I’ll post it here since you seem to be actively checking this thread (very ballsy coming into the lion’s den like that but I admire it)
Let me start by saying I love GW2. It took me a while to get used to it since I was a big fan of GW1 and, when GW2 came out, I realized they were very different. I love the WvW and the Living Story and the Dungeons and all that stuff. Nice job Devs!
I am starting to notice however that people, myself included, are starting to look for something more, something bigger that you can add to the game. I have two suggestions for Long-Term projects for you guys that could keep this game alive and thriving.
I realize these would be Long-Term projects and if you guys see this post and decide to give it a try, I realize this won’t be done by next week or maybe even next feature pack, but it’s just something for you guys to think about and maybe give a try.
1) So one of the things that was so great about GW1 that kept a lot of the original Prophecies players playing for so long is the fact that you came out with huge expansion campaigns (Factions, Nightfall, and the EotN expansion). In GW2 I’ve read that Elona has been completely cut off due to the rising of Palawa Joko and a dragon in the Crystal Desert (Kralkatorrik). It would be really cool to see a campaign about pushing into the Crystal Desert (maybe killing Kralkatorrik) and fighting Palawa Joko in Elona thus opening up Elona to GW2 players again.
I’m not sure what happened to Cantha although from what I’ve read it seems like Zhaitan had cut off access to Cantha and the Ministry of Purity had kind of made them a little xenophobic (btw I first saw that word in the GW Prophecies manual concerning the Stone Summit Dwarves) so maybe you guys might look into, now that Zhaitain is dead for most players, moving into Cantha to reunite with the other races.
Food for thought, that’s a tall order but I know people have been breathing down your neck about something big and this could be it.
I know the current Living Story is kind of the exact opposite direction map-wise of Cantha and Elona but it would be real simple I’d imagine, after Mordremoth, if you did something with Kralkatorrik in the Crystal Desert with a new Living Story and then you could tackle the tall order of a new campaign into Elona.
2) The other thing that could be a big change is regarding WvW. In my humble opinion WvW is one of the most dynamic things about GW2 and I love it. The one thing that is starting to disappoint me or turn me away to Edge of the Mists is the redundancy of the maps. Now I know people have said “Change the maps” before but hear me out.
Blue Team in EotM is Frostreach. So maybe you could make their home BL a tundra setting or more snowy “Shiverpeak-y” type feel to it.
Red Team in EotM is Badlands. So perhaps their BL could be more of a “Desert-y” Crystal Desert (which could be available if you created new expansion campaigns wink wink) feel.
Green Team in EotM is Overgrowth so perhaps their BL could be more of a jungle-y, forest-y type feel? Maybe to imitate the Magumma Jungle scenery or something of that nature?
EB is fine as is but perhaps make the three corners of the same scenery as respective with the team, like in EotM for example. It looks like you did that a little bit with Green Team in EB but Blue Team and Red Team got the short sticks or something.
Anyway these are just some suggestions for long-term projects so I hope you look at this and give them a try. I haven’t read through this whole thread either so these ideas might have already been mentioned or you as the devs might have already thought of them… but those I think could be some of the BIG LONG-TERM projects people are looking for.
I don’t do much other than WvW so I’m sure people would like to see some stuff in Duneons and Fractals as well but those are just my two cents. Personally I think WvW is one of the things that make this game great and separate from other MMOs. Don’t let it take the backseat when you’re at the drawing board with your coworkers thinking about what do do for the next patch.
As an old school GW1 player I know what a big hit that game was and why it was so awesome, I’d hate to see this game have a shorter life and that’s why I am posting these thoughts. Keep rocking on and doing what you do, thanks guys!

Hi Chris,
As an example of bad (horrible) communication, here is an example from a dungeon thread:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/dungeons/Dungeon-owner-sometimes-required/first
Dungeon selling is not something that will be officially supported. Listing a group on the LFG tool is opening it up to a public realm and you do so at your own risk.
Customer Service will not be able to support any interactions that involves group formation politics.
Players state an issue with current party system, which is a legitimate worry when it comes to griefing.
“LFG tool is opening it up to a public realm and you do so at your own risk” is like saying “We don’t really care if our new implementation for parties facilitates griefing” and there have been SOOO many suggestions out there (even easy ones to implement) that reach out to the middle ground and that would’ve made everyone happy.
Same thing with the commander tag color fiasco (except that for this one they made an emergency change and it came into the game properly).
How big was ANet’s user test group of the NPE ? How many iterations did you run over the last year with new/returning players with all of the NPE changes ?
I’m generally curious since this may actually be the root cause (a small sample size of feedback users and/or quality of responses). Even Lo Presti mentions (in her post here) that the results were not what she expected either.
People are just mad chris im a little upset by this feature pack as well but most know its not the end of the world. Cummunity irritation seems high But take it for what it is but dont take it to heart. personally i find one thing to be proud of is how passionate your players are about this game, i dont think people would get this mad if they didnt care. And keep in mind things from the feature patch can always be changable .

Then someone should post sticky with all currently discovered bugs, features that are meant to be and will be kept and features that were meant to be but will be revoked due to negative response and keep it updated as new bugs are discovered and/or fixed, it would mean a lot to players and would calm down things.
By keeping them in dark by not clearly stating what is really wrong and what isn’t, things can only get worse knowing human psychology and history of this forum.
Amount of work you and others have at the moment is directly product of this patch and not players who discovered all those “bugs”, because it wasn’t players who coded this patch and designed features in it.
Be so kind and avoid personal attacks as one I quoted, because it it the same manner of communication some of the players show here and their posts were deleted for it, it certainly isn’t something any employee anywhere should allow himself to do no matter what and how was posted by players.
Thanks for your time and understanding.

We will be doing this.

We want to make sure that it is clear what is ‘As Designed’ at which point we can have a more meaningful discussion about the feature.
Cheers

5 second face..
Chris, I think I’ve conveyed my disappoint in how the communications breakdown since last April affected me personally, as a player and as a customer. In particular, how Traits were (mis)managed, causing me to throw my hands up in the air in frustration, uninstall, and throw my CD into the trash.
Still, I stuck around, read and participated here and there, all the while hopeful that the game and it’s managers would get back on track and make it an environment I would find enjoyable again. By that, precisely, I mean the removal of the silent treatment, the alleviation of perceived arrogance and contempt from you to the community, and thus a lightening and dispersement of the toxicity that has been festering here.
I think it’s great that there is an all-hands-on-deck..show right now. However, I think your CDI topic is way off. There really are more important things to talk about than Guilds. You’ve made that decision and are running with it. I disagree, and will not participate or make detracting posts in that thread.
Now to my actual point:
I find your above post to be unnecessarily offensive and insulting. It really echoes the sentiment that I mentioned regarding the perception of contempt and arrogance from you to us. For me, this is the biggest warning flag that nothing has changed, and that this break from a half year of ignoring your customers is just a bells-and-whistles show.
So, I still have concerns that any of this will amount to anything. Maybe time will tell. However, this is my feedback that there (in my opinion) are still improvements that need to be made, one of which is how you address this community. I get that you are a Dev and not a trained CR person, but you have to do better than that. I can’t trust someone who disrespects one of his customers in the way that you just did.

Absolutely Kline I agree. Folks asked me to be more ‘myself’ and less diplomatic for want of a better term and I am being. I am not taking anything personally just saying it how I see it. Thanks for you advice though I appreciate it.

Hi Illy,
Sorry that you thought I have been offensive. Personally i felt the original post was pointless. My response has no arrogance or contempt (If you have kept up to date with my interaction with the community you would know just how much I care for our players).
So i would ask that it is seen acceptable for us to enter discourse in a way we are comfortable with because frankly treating us like punching bags is not particularly useful to anyone.
I won’t be discussing this particular post anymore as I don’t want to waste your, mine or anyone elses time.

P.S: I agree communication could be more consistent and this is a logistical problem that we couldn’t solve last time we tried but we are doing now. Specifically from a personnel standpoint. I would happily communicate more often if i was able.

If you are making a sticky will you address the Personal Story concerns? Is the ‘Greatest Fears’ story really cut? Are the events or Orr really out of order? I’ll be honest, I almost can’t believe that it’s true, but so many people are reporting it.
Hi Chris – firstly thanks for taking the time (and patience) to come on here and engage with us. I know it can be easy with temperatures running high (mine included) but to know that we are not just being ignored goes some way to helping.
Can i just ask about the new tp?? Ive had a few occassions today when going to sell an item where it seems to randomly pick immediate sell option rather than the list at your chosen price option. Other times ive gone in and its the other way round – its resulted in me miss selling a couple of items tonight.
The question is – is it ment to be like this or is it a bug (the random switching i mean)
Also it did make me think that it would be nice to have a toggleable option to set which is your preferance (bit like the facebook option to show recent news or top stories – though preferably not like facebook in the way it chooses to randomly reset your options every few days )

Would be nice to have this for all future changes(how things are intended to be).
It would be make it much easier to be able to tell what to report as a bug and what to complain about on the forum.

It seems logical that this sort of information should be covered in the patch notes.

Because we can’t be angry about both?

Hi Gem,
This is definitely a bug. The team is working on a number of fixes and tweaks for the new trading post that we hope to push out soon.

I think we have one slot left in the group Guhracie if you would like to come.
We plan on going early next week. Send me a PM if your interested.
Chris
Whee.
So you found ONE inaccuracy. Whee.
There are probably more..however the entire video is actually using humor to make fun of something most of which is a single bug that doesn’t affect Queensdale at all. It’s been used to assault a patch that is much larger than that one issue.
It muddies the whole patch situation. It’s not helpful. The whole bias is obvious from moment one. The video made the guy money, which I guess was his intention, but it was unfair, and didn’t help the game in any way shape or form.
That stuff will be fixed. The video won’t be forgotten.
Hello Chris. I am not sure if you are the right person I could ask for this job as the customer service thread doesn’t seem to tell me much, but this has something to do with the Personal Story.
First off, here’s the link: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2g02mx/the_personal_story_doesnt_make_sense_since_the/
Now I can understand rearranging certain chapters. I think I can live with it given time. But what caught my attention however is related to the quest A Light in the Darkness where you disabled the Your Greatest Fear portion of the quest, which in turn would disable the other quests related to that part (for example, the removal of Tonn and Apatia’s quests). I don’t know if this is really the case or not as I have finished Apatia’s quest after this patch was downloaded. I want to know if this is really true or not. And if so, I’d appreciate your insight as to why this happened.

Some more information on this. This time a record of someone who completed it post patch. It still looks to be bugged though as it does not appear in the journal. There is someone also disagreeing with him that it is only there because he was on that step pre-patch.

In short we still don’t know as a community if it got removed or not. However as the story itself is still in the game files I suspect it is a bug. Thanks for looking into this Chris.

Thank you Templar for your kind words and your feedback. I appreciate it.
Chris
P.S: Templar is my favorite Avatar name! I have used it in many MMOs.
