GW2 has provided new content. The chosen method for new content delivery has displeased some players. Some people like story. Others like treasure hunting. Still others like to delve into mechanics. In many MMO’s, story is secondary (or non-existent) in comparison to treasure hunting or new ways to play the game (e.g., new skills, professions, races, etc.). GW2 is a little different in that regard.

The same type of content is unlikely to please those different groups. Living Story provides story, for those who like it, and (at least in Season 2) new zones with reward mechanics and somewhat different mob mechanics. The new zones have pleased some treasure hunters. Those who like both story and treasure hunts are going to be happier with ANet than those who like only one kind of content.

Those who like to delve into mechanics have seen very little added to please them. However, this group was always going to be disappointed with GW2 in the long run. One of the GW2 design imperatives is to streamline skills and abilities to simplify balancing. That essentially means reducing options. Adding new mechanics expands options.

We might still see new races or professions. We might also see new weapons. However, unless ANet decides to move away from limited options, then new race(s), profession(s) and weapon(s) will simply be new ways to do the same things our characters can do now. For some, these potential additions will do the trick. Others will tire quickly of them. Whether they’re worth adding, anyway, will depend on the cost versus benefit to do so.

What’s so is that every MMO forum contains a demographic that believes that that game has not provided enough new content. Every single one I’ve seen, anyway. While such complaints have the potential to hurt the game, a given development company is only going to produce new content so fast. Usually, the most disaffected are going to be unhappy most of the time, returning to demand more new stuff soon after the last update. Games can weather that kind of complaint. What they cannot weather is when the disaffection grows to encompass many demographics.

Have we reached that stage yet? Nobody knows, really. There’s usually at least one expansion thread near the front of General Discussion. There’s also one of several other types of thread that commonly reoccur. Regardless, I believe ANet is listening. I believe they take the complaints seriously.

An expansion is what many people, as cited by a massive poll taken on the gw2 community. I think its very reasonable to suggest a decline is sales is people losing interest in the game because the living story doesn’t provide enough content. There are several threads on the forum and reddit about this, and they have only gathered more since Season 2 has come to an end.

Many people? Yes, I don’t doubt that there are many people complaining. However, what percentage of players does “many people” represent?

I’d like the “need expansion” complaints a lot more if people refrained from making armchair predictions about the game’s financial health to bolster their demands. It really isn’t necessary and detracts from the thread because people focus on that rather than the desirability of an expansion. ANet/NCSoft know a lot better than we do whether the game is healthy or not. You don’t need to tell them.

If there is no expansion announced in early 2015 I probably won’t continue playing. LS was a nice distraction, but the endless cliffhangers, the slow release on content, the terrible pacing, and the lack of anything meaningful for 2.5 years has wore me down. I may come back if Anet ever gets their act together, but I’m fairly certain they’ve re-tasked the majority of their devs to work on another game at this point.

I beg to differ man, the amount of content they have released in 2 years is a feat for any new MMO. Also, to be noted, even the Titan of MMOs World Of Warcraft ( See what I did there? : D) did not release Burning Crusade for 3 years after release.

If you call http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Release this lack of anything meaningful for 2.5 years. I don’t think you’re playing the wrong kind of game. Take care bro.

Ok on the subject of an expansion. I am not reading as much about wanting or needing an expansion as much as I am reading many players threatening to leave the game. I for one am happy to see GW2 finally settling into the really hardcore and dedicated player base that is starting to emerge. The reality is that with the content additions that have been made they have really satisfied more then they have disappointed. I am happy that they are creating new and innovative content on a regular basis and if you have come to a point that you are bored in the game it is not anyone’s fault but, your own. The game is meant to stimulate your imagination and provide a platform for one to build characters that you love enough to stay with and play the game. If you are 100% on all your characters and you have done or seen all that the game has to offer then maybe this is not the game for you if you are still bored. I would bet that most of the people posting that they need an expansion are not 100% complete on all character types. The reality is that I can create another elementalist of a different race and have a whole new experience that last ages. The reality is there is more then enough to do to keep us immersed with out any question. Thank You Arena net for not charging me every time you add a new zone or redo the features.

I spend enough money on the gemstore as it is, I do not want to spend another $50 on an expansion. With 3500 hours of gametime, I still have not manged to set foot in 80% of the dungeons, do more than 1 full fractal, or do more than ~170ish pvp matches(just got wolf rank a couple days ago). I’ve got more than enough content to meet my gaming needs if they continue putting out living story content as they have been. (though I would like the living story pieces not to keep ending on cliffhangers)

your right that could def be true, but then he probably does A LOT of wvw, or other achievements or focuses a lot on pvp. still though, he makes it seem as if what we have is plentiful. what he has to realize is that most people are NOT like that. most people want to take the WHOLE game in, not just focus on a few aspects of it. so thats why i called him a troll, yes he could be telling the truth, but the way he says it is deceiving.

There’s not much to it. Basically, there’s a panel at PAX South where they will be talking about a new paradigm for how an MMO can expand its universe.

So it’s actually an announcement that an expansion is emphatically not imminent.

it is an estimate. wouldnt you say the average (AKA most) player has partaken in multiple aspects of this game…..especially after 3k hours? its a mere estimate. yes he didnt say other players have the same experience as him/her, but neither did he say the opposite. its a word game, and can be seen as a player saying that there is a lot….lol wait wait, idc anymore, bye. this topic doesnt deserve so much attention =/. lets us just…let this go

“The living world was just the beginning.”

Of what, exactly? All it mentions is the “new framework for growth.” I believe it’ll just be more hype about upcoming LS stuff and how they’ll distribute content through that instead of actual major updates (so nothing new but a way to market the game to those who know little about it by featuring LS). The title also basically says “beyond the point of no return,” basically implying this is the system they’re going to keep using and probably will not change anything in the upcoming months/years.

Yeah, all i see from that link is them talking about LS and how they’ve used that to deliver new content. Or the cost to players if they miss the update window.

well here is a simple list of what i would love to see in new expansion if there will be any
( i didnt list those obvious things every1 kept asking for them )

1- solo mode for all dungeons ( all paths) ( i already made a topic about it )

2- adding unarmed skills for every class ( no weapon equiped )

3- adding chains and whip to weapons ( already made a topic about this 1 too) also adding some uncomman weapons to game would be nice too

4- empowering the visual effect of currect spells and abilities

5- housing and more , i actualy would like to have a small land and build house farm stable and ..

6- adding farm and fishing pool and … . in some games so many ppl spend many hours in farms like we actualy be able to plant a tree and give it water 3 times a day and after 12 days or 1 week or less the tree grows and then it gives us a very special fruit

7- raid dungeons – +10 man instance with some challenging and long boss fights

9- select 1 sigil from each sigils group for weapon, currently we can have 2 sigils , there r 7 groups of sigils right now and 3 of those groups r not realy that nice so we end up having 4 groups , wich r chance on hit- chance on crit- chance on killing mobs and stacking effects

10- adding more spells to choose for our weapon skills , well we can choose 5 between many utility skills i think that would be nice to do the same for weapon skills

11- adding more emotes . like /kiss /shy and …. this is an mmo emotes r a big part of any mmo

We are one , and one is all

At the end of the day, there are so many games to choose from (and so many things to do in lieu of playing games), that most people have no reason to literally obtain every single possible achievement in the entire game. Additionally, it doesn’t make sense from a business perspective that Anet would only want to appeal to the group of players that you describe, because then how do they ever make money? The GW1 model was, as far as I remember, certainly more well received, and I would be surprised if it was not more profitable as well. How many games have you played in your life for over 2 years? Games still need wide sweeping changes and additions to stay fresh, it is no one’s ‘fault’ to get tired of a game that has not had as much ‘expansion-like’ material as the fanbase had come to expect.

Wouldn’t surprise me if this was true. GvG and Guild Halls seem like a “bigger project in the background.”

Honestly i’m not expecting an expansion until late 2016/early 2017 if they choose to expand LS. By expanding LS i mean bigger episodes and more ‘meaningful’ content.

But imo this isn´t really something worth to announced at Pax!
It´s more like a feature update.
Considered that bout the time Gw2 is up now, Gw1 already got so many updates and good expansions.
I don´t want to be the bad guy but some living story is just not the BIG things and stuff that is super secret and the team can´t talk about right now.

I have a feeling they are going to discuss ways they are planning to expand the living world. Maybe expansion like content such as races, new professions they discussed previously. I doubt that means a boxed expansion though, or else why call it " a new paradigm for how an MMO can expand its universe" after all a traditional boxed expansion wouldn’t be a new groundbreaking idea.

As far as PvP players go, I can see why a majority might be disaffected. I might argue the assertion of “most players” as far as PvE goes. My point (re PvE play) was that the tinkerers and theory crafters are more likely to feel ignored than story lovers, or even treasure hunters.

As someone who enjoys lore in/outside/around games I really dislike living story. It is the daytime soap opera equivalent of a story.

That’s how most people who actually even appreciate story feel, excluding the majority that just dislikes LS as a means of delivering essential content.

LS is a great idea, and a cool way to deliver some new stuff, but sometimes the old expansion/major update/whatever you want to call it is just more suitable and allows for more developers to focus on critical issues instead of meeting deadlines.

They never said they won’t do an expansion.

Actually, they have. This statement was somewhat retracted in 2013 by Mike O’Brien. He hinted, in an interview, that expansions were a possibility . . . but not any time in the near future.

“We don’t need an expansion to pay the bills, and we’re not focused on an expansion right now. I won’t try and predict the future, maybe someday we will do one, maybe we won’t. But for now we are focused on the living world. We believe we can update the world and adapt the world in any way we want to through these bi-weekly updates.”

All signs point to no expansion next year. Sorry. Not happening.

Acctualy they do listen to players. With so many trolls posting about it they probably will make one!

One thing Guild Wars 1 expansions did (in addition to bringing new content) was shakeup the meta across almost all gameplay modes, PvP and PvE alike.

While I’m sure it caused many a headache for the devs trying to balance things out, it seemed to breathe new life into the entire game. Players had to evolve and adapt. For me it’s the perfect example of “horizontal progression”.

My hope is, regardless of how this "new framework to expand the GW2 universe " unfolds, that GW2 devs see the need for a shakeup in all aspects of the game. Trying to keep things static and unchanging make for a pretty boring game.

For me what’s revolutionary about the living story is the removal of content. Never before in a MMO was content removed after 2 weeks in a manner that new players do not have access to it (SAB!). Gradual content delivery would have been ok it they didn’t removed all the good stuff from the first year like the Marionette fight, SAB, LA fight, Scarlett boss, etc.

ok on the real yea they made a BUNCH of mistakes, but you CAN tell they are trying to go big in the mmo genre. they WANT to be a big dog in the game, and the tournies are imo the best proof i can provide, plus the advertizements. yea the LS was a nice idea…delivered horribly, but let’s see if they can pick themselves up. i am excited to see what happens. if they are smart they WILL listen to their fans and try to deliver content appropriately.

You better tell us now that this is not what we should expect you to announce before players overhype it and then blame you for not delivering even though you never said anything!

i want at least a new heavy class, but prefer 2 new heavy and 1 of each light and medium. add new skills to weapon slots. give each weapon’s 1-5 a 3 skill selection. 2 new races. a new cultural armor tier with a new skin for each race’s armor type.

oh, and for anet to hire an economist, or fire the current one if there is one and hire one that knows what he/she is doing.

If players overhype anything then it’s the players’ fault, not ANet’s. No company should be held responsible for the level of stupidity that comes from the actions of a few players who cannot tell the difference between rumours/speculation and hard facts.

This playerbase is a wild one.

Colin Johanson alone can smile into the camera and holy hell people will speculate about anything and everything.

Yeah but did you see the way he smiled, man, the way he smiled. It’s clear we are getting an expansion set in Elona, Cantha and a couple of islands named after devs, weekly updates for SAB, precursor crafting, eight new professions and a new race (forum troll). Announcement on the 30th of February or my name’s not Colin Johanson.

There are rumors going around that ArenaNet is going to make a big announcement of some sort at PAX. I have not looked into it because rumors. I haven’t seen any official sources. Just wait and see. Try not to be speculative or set yourselves up for disappointment.

To be fair, he’s not addressing the expansion idea so much as asking them to clearly smash the idea if they can and avoid an impending backlash. Communication, not game additions.

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

And then there’s the backlash from another group of players if Anet does state that they’re not working on an expansion. They’ll receive backlash regardless.

Considering how little Colin and Mike O’Brien communicate with their dwindling playerbase all we’ll have to go on is facial expressions and eye contact.

So they should post a completely bland “Hey, we’ll be saying something, nothing interesting, swing by our panel on the main stage if, y’know, you feel like it?” There’s a difference between interest and hype. Of course they want to do something to tease out interest in attending their panel.

My hope is we will hear some really exciting stuff and it won’t be far distant future but announcements covering the next few months. My expectations? I have none. But it’s fun to speculate and it gives something to look forward to for the end of the month. (As you might see from all my posting today, I’ve been a tad bored with my MMO’s … maybe it’s finally time to go looking for some sort of work again. So hard to be motivated without financial incentives, I must say).

Some are sure this is on the level of when they first announced GW2. Others think it’s all smoke and mirrors and flummery. None of us will know until that Saturday evening when the panel happens. I can only hope that those who are proven wrong, whichever side they’re on, will have the grace to admit they were wrong. Yet I fear that if it’s as cool as I hope, many naysayers will simply find some fault in it anyway and declare it’s a “waste of resources,” and if it’s a letdown, many hopers will declare ANet lied to them.

If they were going to give that announcement before an announcement, would there need to be an announcement? When they are ready to announce something on that either way, I imagine they’ll do it without pre-leak of some kind. There is some speculation at their next PAX appearance later this month they may make such an announcement either way. Certainly doesn’t seem to be the relatively humdrum announcements of before.

As it stands, I think there are certain issues Anet cannot avoid for much longer. An expansion is one of them. A lot of threads and a large super-thread have seen to that.

Ultimately, I feel relatively soon, either at that PAX or sometime in the first half of this year, they’ll either announce an expansion/campaign or announce another initiative in lieu of an expansion, and will answer that question. As much as I’d want the answer as well, I don’t think they’d steal their own fire by putting that info out there prematurely.

If anything, the announcement the way it’s phrased, is specifically telling us there will be no expansion. Anyone who expects one with that wording is just living in hope.

The wording talks about new ways to expand the Guild Wars 2 universe. Expansions aren’t new ways to expand it. That’s old school. To me this implies new things that aren’t being done in the industry at least commonly. Ergo, it won’t be an expansion announcement.
