How I feel about this will depend primarily on what items are being replaced with tonics.
Which town clothes will be replaced with tonics?

I think that town clothes should not be all or nothing.

I love to use my Wintersday town clothes on my human male, but I really hate how the hat looks on him. I much prefer the coolio aviator sunglasses that he is currently wearing.
I would be very disappointed if he always had to wear that hat. x_x

I do like the Mad King’s outfit on my Norn, but I would also like to show his face while wearing it. I would also be very disappointed if he had to wear the pumpkin head all the time. :/

Exactly this. Having town clothes outfits that were bought as separate pieces become one item is pretty terrible. This is the only sad thing to come out of the wardrobe announcement, everything else is so great. Why drop the ball on this aspect?

If they work like the halo, and we can still have those pieces of clothing, I’d be happy enough.

You’d be happy if every time you zoned, you had to double-click on 3 tonics in your bag to, say, put a shirt, shorts and boots back on? :|

I actually run around the world, in many cases, in my town clothes, if I’m gathering, or taking a long walk to, say, Frostgorge. Going into combat knocks them off, but after that’s over, a quick bound ‘shift-z’ toggles my town clothes back on again and off I go.

With this new system, I’d have to ‘shift-z’, which would make me naked, and then double click on 3 items in my bag to put my clothes back on?

I’m going to miss my characters. It just keeps piling up and piling up, little things that just don’t make any sort of sense, and them not caring about us at all as they march ahead and make posts about collaboration and demand we treat them with respect.

It’s the iPhone only available at AT&T. It’s awful.

3 double clicks being a hassle is beyond my comprehension as being a “hard task”.

Yes, it is. Every little thing they do that makes things annoying without any explanation, when they are asked repeatedly ‘why’. There’s no reason why the wardrobe can’t exist in addition to town clothing. There’s no reason the old pieces should have been removed from the shop. There’s no reason why they have to be tonics. There’s no reason, if they are getting rid of swapping to town clothing, that I shouldn’t then be able to create (presumably) a “4th” set of chest, pants, boots that I now have to carry around, and apply those 3 pieces that I bought, and enjoyed, since each piece was released to a new set, and just wear that around in lieu of having the ‘swap to town clothes’ taken away.

The endless tonic will grant the appearance of the clothing it replaced. (along with some appropriate complimentary pieces so you’re not naked). They are new tonics, not existing ones.

Only one tonic can be used at one time.

There will be no town-clothes swap any more.. so you won’t be switching to naked.

So they can’t be dyed…

Losing town clothes is really disappointing… It is lost functionality. I used to play endlessly combining the festival costumes, starting town clothes and the pieces I bought.
Now dyes will happen (I never used them) but these clothes will be gone.

I hope you will offer gem refund for every piece of town clothes I bought. I got them for the combinations, not being restricted to one item or a full costume at a time.

Thank you Anet for this and the new dye system. This makes thing soooo much easier and cleans out some of my storage space big time!.

My understanding after careful reading, is that for costumes, if it was purchased as one set it remains as a set. However if it was purchased as just a single item, like a glove, then that item shows up as a seperate selection in the gloves sections for any of your toons.

However I am curious about what happnes to the extra items that came with the costumes, like the broom you fly on or the black cat?

With that said though why are you doing this to town cloths? I see now real reason why it has to be all or nothing. I fact this seems like a major step back ward with this new wardrobe change. I think its a lot of lost profit for you guys as many people would have been will to buy all those town cloths if they where able to mix and match, but now once they here is all or nothing then I feel most will opt not to.

I for one logged in after hearing that town cloths could be used in combat to buy the sun glasses, and some vest and short (forgot their name). Only to find them gone, and come to read here that they will be replace with tonic’s.

I really can’t see the point in completely ditching the town clothes. They were a niche, sure, but the niche loved their town clothes a lot. It doesn’t hurt you to keep town clothes in the game at all, yet you are going through all this trouble to ruin it for the niche of players. I personally just have one costume set but I would never wear it as a full costume with all the parts and especially not without being able to dye the parts. I’m really really sad to see it go and I hope I can get at least refund for it

Leaves me at sour mood to read about this kinda “hey here is a change that nobody asked and it’s going to ruin the fun of some players but overall the update is good so majority will still cheer for us and we can’t hear the cries of the few”. At least that’s how I see it (inb4 banned)

I’m guessing that each piece of town clothing will remain single items, but the toys will become the new endless tonics that will give the costume brawl skill. (I’m not sure what the dev means by all or nothing, seems very strange since many of the town clothing pieces were mix and match by themselves.)

As for the above items in the gem store, they were retired from the gem store a while ago, maybe 2+ months?

Wait can someone help me understand here.

So outfits (like the Pirate outfit), which are not armor class specific can be applied to any class and used in combat?

Then what is the point of the armor class restriction anymore based on appearance? Can I finally transmute heavy armor skins onto my light armor? I don’t see why we can have permiscuous pirate warriors/thieves/elementalists that look the same, but not armored mesmers.

Or is the restriction gone now?

Indeed – if I recall correctly, they sold a combo pack for a while that had multiple pieces of individual town clothes together, head + shirt + breeches + shoes, and toted that as some sort of outfit that they sold at a discount.

Today, we find that we can’t wear but one piece at a time, as they’ll be converted to tonics. That’s… well, pretty terrible, considering what they themselves were advertising.

So if I bought the riding pants but nothing else of the riding set, I’ll be getting a tonic and not the pants item? Which means no dye paths and no mixing and matching? That’s a bummer; I truly hate tonics. Still a little mad at myself for going for the selfless tonic cause it’s a pain to even remember I have it/which character it’s on, nonetheless continually reapplying it after each zone. I’d rather have a refund of the one item and put it towards buying the whole set for the dye paths tbh :\

And costume brawl items like the pirate sword… will they be tonics? How many tonics can you wear at once? What about my Halloween hats?

I’m so confused.

I don’t see why they wouldn’t bring those skins back, one way or another now that they’ve got the perfect system for it.

Oh, I have it on more than one too, that was just an example. I think the problem is, they’re being very vague about what counts as an ‘outfit’ and what counts as a ‘no longer available item that is a potion’. I think if we could get a more concrete answer that would be very helpful as I was very excited for the rest of the news and would like it to stay that way.

If anyone has played the original Guild wars (its not technically guild wars 1) The armor system was using your armor and then they had costumes that you could use it would put say the Grenth costume on your character that you could not separate. You could also put on a head costume like a blind fold.

Neither of these had their own stats but some of them looked really cool. They used the stats of the existing armor.

So yes you will be able to wear your glasses with the winter clothing because that is a separate piece that can be changed. Those are just two examples of many from the original Guild wars

I am still sure that you will be able to remove all your armor and go in your skivvy’s if you would like lol.

I know you’ve already got all this set in stone. You didn’t post this to get feedback, it’s far, far too late for that and I think we all know it. But this is the kind of thing you NEED to discuss with your players first, get feedback on, and make it work RIGHT.

You had an excellent chance here to make town clothes something big, bigger than it was at start. And you threw that chance out the window, leaving me wondering why. What made you decide that THIS is the way to go? Is there some technical limitation you’re desperately trying to work around? What?

I am not sure if this is a good idea. In fact, I am sure it is not a good idea. No one likes to play clone wars (okay, some people do), and most of us much prefer to mix and match in order to have a distinct and somewhat unique look based on different pieces put together and coloring them as we see fit.

From what I am given to understand this will go and we will have full outfits only with no coloring? I hope that I am mistaken. I currently have the cook outfit just for the boots and the chest piece which looks very formal once dyed black. I have no interest in the cook hat or the apron.

Please don’t make individual pieces into endless tonics. Tonics are bad: it means it will take inventory space; it means I will have to reapply it when it expires, when I change maps, when it gets removed; it means I cant combine them. My main character is a male medium armor wearer and town clothes like the GW2 Shirt, the hoodies, the vests or the shirts were my only hope to get rid of the same constant look given by long coats.

These items barely clip with anything. Please make them armor skins just like the town clothes headgears.

To clarify, I love the rest of what they’re doing with wardrobes, it’s just this confusing piece about how the town clothes that is kind of unfortunate and disappointing, especially the town clothes that people have bought prior to the update are going to work.

I understand that if you buy a set of town clothes after the update, they become a costume that you wear fully. Got it, that makes sense. I’m not wild about it because I rarely think all parts of a costume look good but that’s fine, I’m sure others will disagree and still love it. No problem there.

What I don’t quite grasp is what happens to us with Cherry Blossom shirts and Cargo Shorts and all of that. We can’t use those items anymore, and they’re going to become tonics? We can’t dye them, we can’t wear them with other originally town clothes items? All of that seems really ill-thought out and disappointing. I don’t understand why they don’t just convert them to unlockable skins as well, but if there’s a technical limitation, again, I can deal with that, so long as everyone who bought them is issued a refund without question.

What gets really confusing is for people who have bought full outfits like the Pirate’s set previously and already have their set in pieces. What are they going to do? Are they getting a set of tonics, one for each piece? Or is the programming logic smart enough to pull all of the pieces from one’s bank/inventory/equipped and give them a brand new outfit? Or are they going to have to file a ticket to get it replaced?

These things all really need some clarification and answers.

If this is the system they’re going with that’s a little better—at least I’ll be able to keep my Bloody Prince’s outfit and wear my Ringmaster’kitten. If I had to separate the two I don’t think I would want either piece anymore, and I would be kittened I wasted the money I spent on them. Of course, that’s assuming this is actually what they’re doing, and all they’ve said is ‘all or nothing,’ which doesn’t bode well AT ALL.

Can we get a little more clarification, please?

Also, what colors are are these clothing sets going to default to when they’re made into endless tonics? We can’t dye accessories, still, so being locked into a palette is going to make a couple of my alts with very visible accessories look pretty goofy.

There is no conceivable reason they even needed to remove town clothing and mixing and matching and still do whatever they were planning to allow you to use ‘some’ town clothing (sets, and as whats-his-face said, ‘appropriate’ clothes to go with single items that you use as a tonic). They don’t need to be mutually exclusive things.

What was the reason they gave months ago as the reason the removed most of the single item clothing from the store? To clean it up so they could offer some more things, or something along those lines?

That was a lie.

This is about slowly whittling away at existing content that doesn’t fit someone’s view of what is ‘appropriate’. It won’t happen all at once, but there will be things that follow. They need to align the content so it sends the right message for our children.

I am quite confused at the moment aswell. Maybe we could get a more detailed recap of what is actually happening to the town clothes specifically and why?

Well as far as I understand, Town Clothes will belong to one of these groups:

a) Outfit sets you purchase as a whole, like Pirate , Cook, Halloween or Christmas: You won’t be able to separate the pieces anymore nor combine them with other pieces, they will become skins you can use for free and they will have no weight (I.e. you can use them as heavy, light or medium armor). You are forced to use the complete set. Not clear if you can hide head wear or gloves.

b) Spare pieces you could purchase separately but are no longer available, like riding pants, hoodies, shorts or cherry blossom shirt: they become endless tonics, which look like that piece PLUS some complimentary ones to avoid nakedness. That is, if your piece was a shirt, it will include either a piece of skirt or pants you didn’t choose and you can’t change. It is not clear if you can use dyes of them but most probably you won’t.

c) Certain pieces like hats will still become non-weight armor skins. I guess that will include the quaggan and bear fluffy hats, maybe glasses too.

d) I don’t know what will happen to the usual default Town Clothing but it is most likely disappearing

The why continues being a mistery, at least to me.

It really seems like someone at Arenanet has a deep seething hatred for role-players.

This change does nothing in regards to making money or losing money for Arenanet. The typical monetary reasoning behind most of their changes does not exist in this area. Town clothing is static. To go and make changes that only screw the players over like this seems more like deliberate trolling. There is no reason for what they have done, it’s like it was thrown together on a whim to see if they could damage the role playing community.

So if you just bought that cherry blossom shirt, you get that in a endless tonic with complimentary parts which are pants to avoid nakedness. Why again can that not just become a skin and get mixed with other town clothes or armor?

Well, people asked as a minor quality-of-life to be allowed to have town clothes not toggle off for armor when entering combat. Someone on the dev team came up with this, since tonics remain active, I presume.

And since they probably (rightfully) found Town Clothing / Armor separation being clunky as all heck . . .

Though my choice would have been to just change Town Clothing / Armor to “Natural Armor / Social Armor” so you can wear stuff over armor to change the look but still have the stats of the Natural Armor. Then just make Town Clothing armor with no stats.

Exactly wh not make Town Clothing armor with no stats in the first place, maybe I had much more gems used by now on Town clothes that are a good addition to my overall look.

Yes outfits are all or nothing.
Yes wearable in combat. There will be no non-combat equipment anymore, unless you count tonics.

THANK YOU! That is incredibly cool to hear.

(Maybe this should be noted in the blog posts as a footnote, since it is a rather important change?)

Wait, people are saying the old town clothes are an endless tonic? That still can’t be used in combat? (And can’t be dyed?)

/facepalm.

If this is what is being done with town clothes, then it makes no sense. They should simply be skins that can be applied just like gear.

Also I’m not sure I like to hear the ‘All or nothing’ regarding costumes. We can’t apply the pieces of the costumes, we have to apply the whole thing? So I can’t just have a Witch’kitten I have to apply the whole Witch’s Oufit to everything on my character to wear it?

If so then /Implied facepalm (Google it).

Oh wow, I didn’t even think of this until just now. If you have characters in the Order of Whispers, the Vigil, and the Durmand Priory, you will be able to use the order-specific armor and weapons on any character!

So wait, these “endless clothing tonics” can only be used one at a time and cannot stack with others?

WHY? What is the point of wearing one of the vests, hoodies, or the shorts if you can’t mix and match like you can right now?

What is the point of turning old town clothes into tonics of all things? Do you hate those town clothes Anet? I mean I’d understand if you as a company held the opinion that casual clothes shouldn’t be used in combat, something I’d disagree with since some of your NPC’s seem to be exempt from that reasoning, but not allowing us to mix and match those old town clothes?

It’s not like current light/heavy armor sets are less skimpy than wearing the shorts and vests together, those revealing garments are fine but the old town clothing are not? According to some of the scenes and previews on your latest video on the wardrobe (next to the cute frog hat of course) you seem to have exempt the old town headgear from the tonic treatment, but the old clothes are not.

Don’t erase the ability to mix them up at least, it’s fine if you don’t want people walking around in hoodies and shorts in combat, but at least leave the option in to mix and match the old town clothing out of combat like it is now. Anything is better than wasting their potential on tonics that can only be used one at a time.
