GW2 Sneak Peek @ PAX South.
Lack of new content? 3 new maps, Fractals, dungeon path, EoTM, armor/weapon skins, new gemstore items, LS1 & 2, festivals and new crafting levels are what I can think of off the top of my head.
MMO’s typically don’t put out much content within their first couple of years as it’s spent smoothing over the game and putting in things that were promised but missed at launch. Yet we got all of the above for free!
Maybe you’re new to the MMO world but your expectations need to be checked. Now if the current pace of content continues than next year I might be joining you.
Also, check message boards and forums for spare tickets. You can usually find them as people’s plans change and what not.
It’s sad that I actually took the time to make a “thank you” thread rather than the usual complaining, and still get accused of “being new to mmos”. Is this where we compare who’s older and who’s been playing online games the longest? Kudos if you win, but I don’t think I’d bet on it.
Do we need to bring up GW1 and the amount of content and features it saw added in this same time frame? That’s my preferred example anyway; others like to use other games like FFXIV. Heck, even the original EQ has seen 21 xpacs in 15yrs. True, not all themepark games get lots of content added, some do. The ones that do tend to be more well regarded for it, and that used to include GW.
But GW2 is laughably behind when it comes to “expansion-like content”. To pretend it’s been delivering SO MUCH in that regard, especially vs its own predecessor …is simply not credible. Are you seriously comparing 3 small zones in 2yrs to multiple continents? Maybe you’re new to the GW franchise, but even with a smaller team Anet used to be capable of so much more.
That’s not even the purpose of this thread though. The purpose was to be supportive and appreciative about Anet finally appearing to make a big move to catch up. We don’t know what it is yet, but the fact that it’s at least happening is encouraging.
I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but I’d like to think this event will go a long way toward turning things around, and reveal some really amazing things they’ve been working on all this time. Per their policy: they must have something almost ready if they’re actually willing to talk about it. I for one will be absorbing every bit of info as soon as possible.
Server: Tarnished Coast
The Living Universe will finally bring us an expansion worth of content.
Sounds familiar.
The Leveling & Open World Compendium
Anet loves to (try) innovate.
“New framework for how an MMO can grow its universe. The Living World was just the beginning.”There’ll be an uproar, that’s for sure. Hopefully a positive one. I’m excited to see what they’ve come up with.
Edit: Maybe we’ll know what these guys are doing at Anet —> http://intrinsicalgorithm.com/IANews/2014/04/now-consulting-at-arenanet-on-guild-wars-2/
Their motto is very much in accordance to a.net MO, which isn’t encouraging: “reducing the world to mathematical equations”. Now we know where this game’s problems stem from.
(edited by Eric.6109)
Why are they talking about “growing a universe” when we haven’t even seen travel to another continent yet?
Why are they talking about “growing a universe” when we haven’t even seen travel to another continent yet?
Maybe it have to do with the potential announcement?

I guess it would break somebodies bones to announce anything here, today, and save themselves the price of the rent on a large hall at a convention?

lold aren’t transfers from server to server the equivalent of univese travel?
>:]
Well, since we’re guessing anyway: new level cap, new class(es), new zones. Something ritualist-like if Rytlock is any hint.
Living Story-style ‘expansion’ as in one big download in the future.
Probably a line of quests soon that involves unlocking this content, again Living Story-style.
I guess it would break somebodies bones to announce anything here, today, and save themselves the price of the rent on a large hall at a convention?
The larger hall at the convention is where they want to make annoucements, not here. The people here are already interested, one way or another, in Guild Wars 2. Bigger announcements are a way to get more people interested, and a place like Pax gets them exposure they can’t get here.
I’ve said all along that big announcements are usually reserved for the time when it makes sense to announce them. To me that’s either the 10 year anniversary of the Franchise in April or maybe at Pax.
Ah. That’s right. The anniversary is coming up. Good call.
We will get…..nothing.
As somebody who, for a long time now, has been dissatisfied with the lack of new content/features, I must say I’m greatly looking forward to PAX South.

I played SW till they nerf it and I haven’t played it since. Haven’t even done LS because it is borring. I want new MMO content not single player mode. New skills, new weapons (not skins), new something.
Even if they announce several new stuff, what i feel for experiance playing this game or what made me stop was the gap between what is anounced and what is being deployed as a final product.
Lets just see and wait if they can tune the game.
Hope there will be more stuff for WvW (like actuall wvw not k-train boost).
Not one of thous yeah we listen to ppl and we re did the whole NPE again or they make whole new system of Minis. (I so f much hate thous usless pixles)
The only thing that excites me about PAX is PA’s D&D sessions.
I wish Chris Perkins would be on PAX south.
E.A.D.
Hear, hear, OP.
I don’t know what they’re going to talk about, but four facts are certain:
- It’s on the main theatre
- The convention is sold out
- It’s a 90 minute block
- It’s the two people that if it were a big announcement, they’d be there
I’m not one for hype, and I have definitely been disappointed with the lack of content (though not openly raging about it on the forums), but this is very exciting. I hope it blows us all away.
Surely the boss of Anet would not host a talk about an average LS episode.
I’m tentatively hopeful.
I hope, and pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster, that the people who predicted Living Story season 2 was actually the introduction of a full-blown expansion focusing on Mordremoth were right.
Must…not… get … hyped…!

Ooh! You know what would be the perfect addition to Living World?
Living Rides!
‘What? Didn’t buy water and mount food/fuel for your Living Ride? Didn’t perform routine maintenance on the shoes/tires? Well, guess who’s walking — to the nearest living ride supply station!’
People would be champing at the proverbial bit if they announced something like that.
For all the negativity in this thread, I will mention three things:
- The silent treatment is typically reserved for interviews and, more of, forum posts. This is PAX South, and more importantly, this is in the main theater. This wouldn’t be in the main theater if it was something small like beating around the bush that we’ve been getting for a year or so.
- Arenanet has told us – with a recent (weeks ago) reaffirmation by Massively – that they have big background projects going on since at least January 2014 (planned, that is). This is likely it.
- Given the wording, it isn’t going to be a traditional expansion (or other traditional means of content release for MMOs), nor will it be more Living World (aka Season 3). It’s something else.
Whether this turns out to be something grand or something poor… We will have to see.
What if… they’re announcing not an expantion but a new campain! Like with gw1 where you could buy factions, but not need proffesies to play it.
But if you combine them, you could cross continents.
‘’The Living World was just the beginning.’’
If they are going to talk about Living World regardless of this line, it is gonna be sadness.
Man, I can’t tell you how lucky I am that those posting in these forums only represent less than 1% of the GW2-players.
If negativity was squeaking, a lot of you could find someone running behind you with an oil can…
1%? Want to to link us up with that stat?? Likely you can’t since it was made up and thrown out as a fact.
I got my tickets to PAXsouth. I hope I don’t get band before I get back. Because If I get the chance I might give them an ear full. LOL

I would assume it comes from this post:
https://forum-de.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Mehr-Transparenz-beim-Runden-Tisch/first#post416077
Specifically this part:
Which basically says that about 8,5% of the players uses the forum and only 1% posts actively (unless my German is more rusty than I thought).
So while it is not entirely true, it does show a rather clear picture of the actual usage of the forums.

It’s 106 miles to Divinity’s Reach, we got a full map to clear, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark… and we’re wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.

While I do agree that GW2 is lacking content, both of your examples are a bit flawed.
GW1 wasn’t an MMORPG and FF-ARR is a re-release where the devs had time to develope the game and revamp its’ systems. When the game was re-released, the devs started to push content in patches to resume the story of the original FF14 in which most of the content was created during the re-release period.
If Anet’s GW2 failed and they were forced to re-release, they will probably release alot of new content too in addition to a more polished experience.

Public hype beyond those who read the gw2 forums.
Attempt to pull non gw2 players (Back) from other games.
General publicity to those they actually need to entice into the game?
Advocate of learning and being a useful party member.

It’s safe to assume that this also means that we’ll not hear or get anything major from them until after this announcement.

Yeah, except the next part of the Living Story (which might or might not be the finale, and might or might also resolve quite a few questions).

At best it’s the finale of the season, but there’s no way we’ll be fighting Mord yet. I doubt we’ll even get to deal with that huge “flower” we saw when scouting with Caithe.
Given that, I’m sure they plan to have some of our current questions carry over to make us (hopefully) look forward to the next part of the story. I’m betting on catching up to Caithe and finding out why she did what she did, and the egg being put someplace safe, but not seeing it hatch yet.

Do people really think that they would take 1,5 hours on the MAIN STAGE for not telling us anything?
Just FYI: I’m saving all those white knight quotes of you and Vayne to look at them and laugh when it turns out to be false.
And will you be gracious enough to admit you’re wrong if we’re not? White knights are just people who like the game. Trying to discredit people who like the game because you don’t isn’t actually making you look any better.
Well here is my prediction for what will be announced;
There will be major additions of content added throughout the year which will be linked directly to the LS. These will include new lands, as well as new classes, starting areas, dungeons etc. all of which will be accessed to a limited degree through the LS but the full versions can be permanently added through a gem store purchase. These releases will continue throughout the year as the story progresses and the items will vary as they will pertain to said story. At the end of the day the promise will be the expansion level content most are looking for but will not be available all at once.
Positive notes: most players will finally get the volumes of content they have been asking for since the release of the 2nd season of LS. Anet is then said to be keeping to it’s guns kitten far as LS and non traditional MMO. People will only need to buy what interests them and jump in only when they choose, which offers more choice to those who don’t want a full expansion. The LS portion of the content itself will still be available at no cost for everyone.
Negative notes: content will still only be available in chunks and not as a complete expansion. The content available may not be what you happen to be looking for during that particular release which means you could be saddled with more of the same until they do release what interests you. The overall cost of getting this volume of content will be far more than any traditional expansion pack.
Concerns: two years in there is a tremendous amount of gold in the game and this will lead to many people being able to buy gems through conversion which limits the overall cash influx into GW2. This is also going to mean they need to make up for that which translates into the greater costs for the overall content. The other potential issue will be the fracturing of the player base but the overall freedom of playing what you want when you want to will rightly or wrongly be their justification on how this is still the fairest way to release the content.
One thing absent from this conversation is total population. Opening up new continents, starting areas, etc. creates an issue with achieving critical mass of players in key areas. If the population is low (whatever qualifies as low for their purposes), opening new areas drains old areas and cripples many of the group events or the “social” interaction aspect of the game. If there is a constant addition of new areas, the process repeats itself until you reach a gas-like state of dispersion. Since they started the mega server thing, it’s clear that total population was an issue for some servers and may, in the bigger scheme of things, be a “problem” they’re factoring into their plans.
I think it’s more likely that they will move in a new sort of direction. The point of no return will turn out to be the point at which you “transfer” to a new server with the new content. The LS will take you up to that point and after some critical mass is achieved (so that there are enough people on the new server to run group content) you’ll move over as part of some event. Once there, you can’t go back. This will put your starting story line with Zhaitan and the followups with the original LS content in its own “chapter”/“server”/“zone” (whatever the correct terminology is). Then they can introduce new items and such without wrecking balance and the economy on the old server.
That’s my crazy prediction. Dream on guildwarians!
I’ve waited a long time for an expansion and this might be it…I’m getting aboard the hype train.
Sounds interesting, more than 3 weeks wait untill more news

…interesting.
More like, the Living World was a fantastic idea that couldn’t be executed properly. Now they are spinning it into something that will do a better job hopefully. The LW stuff is cool in parts, but is sorely lacking in replayability and meager when compared to an expansion in terms of content delivery method.
how we’re setting up a new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe
i have bad feeling about that sentence above, well we have to wait and see.

GW1 wasn’t an MMORPG, comparing it with GW2 makes as much sense as comparing WoW to older games in the franchise.
Yeah, GW2 needs content however, it makes no sense if I would complain and say that Heartstone needs more updates because even LoL got more than that. Two genres, two business models.

Comparing the games that the same company have created makes much sense. Even if GW1 was seen as a CORPG, it still got a lot if similarities to an MMO. You can still group up with other players, you can still run dungeons, you can still complete quests and missions, you can still gather armour, you can still PvP, you can still farm stuff like reputation, gold, items.
Just because it isn’t EXACTLY like an MMO it doesn’t mean we can’t compare them, because it’s still very, very, very similar to one. The only difference is that it isn’t fully persistent world, and that you can group up with NPC heroes and henchmen.
