Play for Free Confirmed [merged]
I definately cant afford to upgrade all 6 accounts Ive bought for me and my family at this price so none of us get to play hot. Thanks a lot for valuing my support for your franchise over the last 10 years and the well over 1000 dollars Ive spent on your games, expansions and gems!
Yeah, but it’s like arguing when there is a steam sale going on and you bougth game on release lol…
Not the same. I have never seen steam sell someone the expansion for a game they bought from them and someone else the original and the expansion at the same time for the same price unless it was a special limited time offer. Anet is having this as the price period
LOL people damage control this.. This rip off. it’s free to play “new players”. If they want to keep playing they just need to buy Exp Pack.
So…
Base game 0€
Exp pack 44.99€ total 44.99€.
I bought game 2012 for 50€ i think… so 50€ + 44.99€ = 90.99 for same content. RIP OFF.But…absolutely no concession for old players buying into the expansion? That seems skewed. I’m not averse to buying it, but at least give me some added incentive if everyone else is going to be getting what I purchased free.
You got to play for couple of years before everyone else. Most vet have played more then 100+ or even 1000+ hr. Thats alot of play time for 60$.
I don’t know why some people are mad. There is gonna be more players to play with. People are reasoning like childs because some people will enjoy a game that they had to pay for 3 years ago…. Plus, its only 60$.
You call my reasoning childish, and end your comment with ’it’s only $60’. I’m glad you live in a world where $60 isn’t a lot of money. Maybe I can visit you there someday. Today isn’t that day though.
How do you even have a computer good enough to play GW2 if 60$ is too much? GW2 has been out for 3 years. 3 YEARS for 60$. Thats 20$ a year. And 0.60 cents per hour if you played for at least 100hr. THATS NOT ALOT if you compare it to any other hobby.
Because life changes a lot in 3 years. For me a car that used to work fine reached the end of its life span, and needs to go into the shop annually at best. For me college happened and horrific loans built up while study prevented me from working during the semester. Relatives can fall into financial trouble and need help. Injuries can happen. Robberies can happen. There are any number of reasons in the real world why people couldn’t spend $60 lightly.
Then you don’t buy HOT. Still, would you be mad if you bought a game on steam 3 years ago and it went on sale today? Would you be mad if you bougth a new bike 3 years ago and it went on sale 1 year later? You had plenty of time to enjoy it. That’s how it works in real world. Do you complain when anything you bought some time ago goes on sale?
RIP gw2
also no price drop for users who already own GW2. bullcrap
It ’s totally unfair for those of us royal player since day one to have to buy an expansion full price when the core game we paid for is now free!
I demand 50% off HOT for existing players!!!
I thought this was over with the pre sale. Again Anet finds ways to offend people that payed for the game. I can not afford HOT now so basically I paid for what they are now giving away for free.
You might want to read the restritions, and figure out how much you use, that they can’t, and what you earn in the past how ever long you had the game, and then go from there.
I definately cant afford to upgrade all 6 accounts Ive bought for me and my family at this price so none of us get to play hot. Thanks a lot for valuing my support for your franchise over the last 10 years and the well over 1000 dollars Ive spent on your games, expansions and gems!

Well, on steam you can buy a game + expantion for less then orignal price of the game witouth expantion when it came out…. Just look at Skyrim or borderland when it goes on sale…
And look at WoW. You dont have to pay for every expantion…
Certainly going to keep playing, was 100% going to buy the expansion, now like 90% (will see what guildies are doing, because holding on to the hearts of those closest to you will be what get ya thru this morass)…but no amount of ‘polishing and corporate speak’ can alter the fact that this could very well be step one down an awful path…I do plan on sticking around to see what happens but also can see the lights coming down the track…and they aren’t good lights…(think Dead Lights from ‘It’)…
The one thing that is undeniable is that the danger of the community becoming as toxic as all the other castaway f2p games is real…it’s a legitimate concern and no amount of chat restriction is going to change that fact…A-net might think they have their finger in the hole in the dam, but water is leaking from places they can’t even imagine…
kitten this day started so well too lol!
Ok, so the core game is going free to play, I read about the restrictions to these accounts, and that’s all good, it encourages people to play the game and maybe move on and buy HoT, so far so good,
There is no doubt that making a F2P game will encourage the masses of bots to reappear into the game, my concern is, if these accounts are played as normal to level 80 and then end up in places like the Cursed Shore, Silverwastes, etc, what exactly is your plan for that, as I think some zones in the game have been nerfed to within an inch of there lives with the loot drops, and masses of bots, may lead to even more nerfed loot drops.
Please don’t nerf our loot, its already been battered so badly its lead to mindless drones running around SW, and don’t push all the loot into the new PvE maps, don’t forget about the other end game content zones, FGS, CS, DT, SW……
They haven’t said anything about nerfing loot drops, so why would you assume that is what they are/will be doing?
If anything, if they find that free accounts are farming too much, they will limit the loot acquisition for free accounts, not for veterans.

Apparently it wasnt bad enough that they gave base game to HoT purchasers, making vets pay the original $60 plus another $50 for HoT. But now since we had another eye free he felt the desire to jab it as well with making the base game absolutely free, to everyone.
I’d gladly take limited chat and limited bag slots for free on just one toon until lvl 80, then pay only $50 for HoT and have full game open up. I know thats not how it works, but if you have a brain you know what I’m talking about.
So again, us vets appreciate that, Mikey.

You just proved my point that you buy both the game AND expansion cheap. Not at the same price as just the expansion. Unless there is a special limited time sale
Didn’t we already had the same discussion when HoT pre-purchase was announced about the price? So people are not upset because the game is free now but because someone will pay less today for something they bought 3 years ago.
I think the point is slightly different.
3 years ago, when GW2 came out, it was a great success. At least in Italy and amongst my friends all around the world. Almost all my SWTOR Guild started playing it on Day One, I joined later but stuff happened that prevented me to play at full time, the excitement was real and so it was the advertisment that GW2 got by word of mouth.
These people, and the ones who kept purchasing\playing the game in these years, helped GW2 getting popular and stay alive with their presence and with their money. Now we get a letter where we get said “Thank you for your continued support, we’re sure that since you loved GW2 Core, then you will pay full price for HoT. But, since we want to be nice to people who for now didn’t give a kitten ew players will not have to pay for the Core Game. Even better, they can start playing without even having to wait for the release of HoT. FOR FREE!”
It’s not about the price for Core Game having been the price for 3 years of game, it’s about them giving their all to attract customers while ignoring us on the sidelines.
I love how people are complain about f2p being toxic when all of you are already treating them like mud before they even get here. Shape up and grow up. This is not a bad deal. They will keep a eye on things, and make sure things don’t go crazy, they already limited new accounts pretty hard to where you really have to try to be a jerk, and even then, a simple block will prevent the chat any more. I can’t even seeing it effect WvW really, since not only do you have to level up to 60 before then, most server population already max for joining anyways. the lowers ones, maybe, but then they might turn out to be players, and you will all have a good time.
The F2P decision sounds okay, but what really bothers me is that they didnt add a max level 20 cap for trials. Without a cap, it will be ridiculous. Never imagined that Anet is going to sell out their fantastic game so cheap … this F2P thing ruined all my enjoyment about the HoT release date …

So your 3 years of having access to the game is none existent then? You have had a plethora of free updates in those years that new players joining now will never be able to experience.
Think about that.

Time for you to move on and find a new game to play – Check
Looks like a huge marketing ploy from Anet, drawing people in and then asking them to stump up if they want the good parts of the game and also hopefully hooking them in for the expansion.
As a veteran, I don’t really see anything terrible about this ploy, especially given the restrictions on the free accounts.
If anything, it creates second class citizens of the F2P players.
Not too worried about the economy, I’m sure it will level out and let’s face it, only those that power trade on the TP care about it (although why they bother after the 5th or 6th legendery i don’t know). If I wanted to spend hours trading I’d be doing it on real markets not a bunch of pixels…

They also can’t get daily login to hurt the economy, or be able to give their wealth away. They also protected pvp cause of level restrition, and even then it been added from before you need to be at least rank 20 before entering offical one. WVW can’t till level 60, and such.
Also gw2 already has hacker, and they are still working on differnt way to prevent this stuff.

You are right on that point. But most steam game goes on sale before an expac, that’s basicaly what anet did. But instead of selling it 10$, they give it away for free with restriction. I don’t see what is wrong with that. Other MMOs do the same. They offer some free content so people will pay later on. If people had to buy core + HOT, the price to play the game would be wayy to high.
Before reading the restrictions thoroughly I was a bit concerned myself about f2p. However, I’m convinced that Anet has done well and has worked to prevent many issues from even being a thing. Plus it lets me invite friends to play the game who otherwise wouldn’t have the money for anything other than general living expenses!
I’m a long time ‘veteran’ myself, having played gw1 since 2005 and gw2 since the headstart. And I think that this is no way ignores us who have been playing for a while.
My only issue is if somebody bought the core game from some retailer within the past week or month is now probably furious. I’d recommend jumping on refunds for those people. If they do this diligently maybe those people will buy HoT with the refunded money!
Ok, so the core game is going free to play, I read about the restrictions to these accounts, and that’s all good, it encourages people to play the game and maybe move on and buy HoT, so far so good,

They’ve put a lot of restrictions in place to try and make it impossible to get good and items off a free account. Botting is only worthwhile if you can transfer the rewards – either to your main account (which you don’t want banned for botting) or to a paying customer if you’re an illegal gold seller.

Unless Anet is planning to put a cap on how long an account can play GW2 those 3 years have no extra value to me. They’re no more valuable than the first 3 years that new players will spend in the game. In fact, they’re less valuable, because I had access to less content.
I do like the way you liken a long term business strategy to a temporary sale though. False equivalence is my favorite.
the point is that people who already bought core shouldnt have to pay as much as people buying core and hot
The F2P decision sounds okay, but what really bothers me is that they didnt add a max level 20 cap for trials. Without a cap, it will be ridiculous. Never imagined that Anet is going to sell out their fantastic game so cheap …
That was i thinking too. why not free to play till lvl 20 with restictions. and if ppl like the game they can buy it. or keep playing but not getting exp anymore.
Yes I see that but how is it fair to me? Why should I have to pay more money while new players don’t? Why am I getting punished for buying the core game when it released?
How are you being punished? You played the game for three years. New players won’t be getting everything you got. You can continue to play just as you are, not buy HoT, and still be better off than the F2P players.
It is not the F2P I have a problem with. I think it’s a great idea. My problem is that new players can buy both the core game and HoT for HALF the price of what I paid for my games. How is this fair?
Because they aren’t getting the same game that you paid for. There will be no Living Story and those 40 other updates we had over the last three years. What do they have to pay for with GW2 Core?
The entire story for the core game that I also paid for? The living story was great and all but it was free so it shouldn’t even be brought into the picture. The core game is still a game with a storyline.
Okay, I see what you’re are saying. That part never changes, and a lot of players get bored with that, so that is why they offer the new stuff. I wouldn’t call it “free”, you paid for that, too. We knew there would be content releases when we purchased the game, so that could definitely have been a selling point for many a player. But you see the core game as the game, maybe you are a player who doesn’t participate in a lot of the new stuff. Okay, I get that.
Still, you can’t look at things this way. Do YOU feel that YOU got your money’s worth? If yes, that’s all that matters. Making it free with limited content at a later time doesn’t change the fact that you were satisfied with your purchase.
As I said it is not the F2P I have a problem with. Once again I think it’s a great idea. My problem is that you can buy HoT and get the core game for free, but I who already bought the core game now has to pay for HoT. It wouldn’t be a problem if new players paid for both games instead of just one.
Okay. I’m not gonna lie, I AM a little bothered by it. Mostly b/c it seemed we were promised continuing and changing content, and at release ANet was adamant that there would never be expansions with this game (or so I seem to recall).
But I don’t see how else ANet could handle an expansion. What would be the point in releasing an expansion and giving it to their current customers for free? That’s unreasonable to expect a company not to be able to profit off their work. I don’t feel that it’s “owed” to me. And the only way I can look at it is that the $60 I paid in 2012 was for the last three years of game I have enjoyed. I can keep playing that content without buying HoT. They’re not taking that away from me. But if I want to play the new content, I have to pay $50 just like everyone else. I don’t see how it could be any other way. So, you either buy it or you don’t.
To be honest they could have made the expansion free and use it to promote fresh blood to join the game. HoT retail version could simply have been something to save new players from massive downloads.
They instead choose to give the game to newcomers for Free, which mean they expect a bigger money return from Veterans buying the expansion than from new blood purchasing the Core Game + HoT. Even worse, the game is going Free to Play, which mean that the appeal has even lost more points if they need to offer a trial.
In the end, they’re trying to make cash over the Veterans, despite all the nice words in the ‘letter’.
Considering the restrictions make it seem more like a trial version than a free to play game I think they’re expecting to make money from free players by drawing them in with a free account and then persuading them to buy the game to get rid of the restrictions and access the new content.
With some people it could be effective. I’ve got friends who I think would love this game but who wouldn’t buy it because they’re not sure, now they can find out.
Likewise they’re trying to avoid expansions being seen as a barrier to entry. I’ve never played WoW and if I wanted to start today I’d have to pay the equivalent of approximately 5 games to get the stuff everyone is playing now. I’m not going to do that. If I was that interested I’d have bought it years ago.
That’s the thinking Anet want to avoid.
That’s why you make the expansions free. Or at least, if you want to insert the Core Game in the new expansion, you give a significant discount to the Veterans.
With GW1 the various installments, beside I think Eye of the North, were treated as indipendent games. Or at least, if you owned Factions you didn’t needed Prophecies and vice-versa, I missed Nightfall but I’m pretty sure it was the same. HoT isn’t going to be the same thing, I’m not even sure if the campaign\pve in that will be even that long to justify the price.

If you didn’t enjoy your 3 years of playing gw2, you should of played something else. Plus, like i’ve already said, plenty of things go on sale. That’s the way it works.
I dont want anything for free I just dont want to pay twice as much for supportin the game from start!
Well if it makes some of you veterans feel better, I purchased the game recently and now it just went F2P! So if its any consolation, people like me got screwed more. I should have just held out a few more months for HoT.

How much recently and for how much money?
I think there’s a refound policy for the Core Game if you purchased it by retail stores after a certain date.
Don’t worry, the economy will be ok. We put a lot of effort into keeping it protected.

This sounds like a perfect solution , but the company is more concerned not to copy the system of another game “Cof wow Cof”, than with the old players of them .
I give up as people will continue to apply twisted conspiracy logic to whatever is said. I feel the way I do with good reason and thats all there is to it. =-)

If you didn’t enjoy your 3 years of playing gw2, you should of played something else. Plus, like i’ve already said, plenty of things go on sale. That’s the way it works.
I did enjoy my 3 years of playing GW2. Just like I’m sure most new players will enjoy their first 3 years of playing GW2:HoT. That’s the point. There’s no set time cap, that time doesn’t have any inherent value. Everyone can play for 3 years when they get it. My 3 years coming first doesn’t mean anything.
Yes, things go on sale. And then they go off sale. That’s how a sale works. That’s not what’s happening here, so I don’t know why you keep making that comparison.

So youre the one who got my real name before I could! ^^
This sounds like a perfect solution , but the company is more concerned not to copy the system of another game “Cof wow Cof”, than with the old players of them .
It’s not ‘copying’, multiple software products have a limit on how many days\times you can use their trial versions. Blizzard didn’t invented anything new with that.
Hell, ANet could even put a popup\message window in game reminding you that you’re on trial version, rather than using half of these limitations.
Don’t worry, the economy will be ok. We put a lot of effort into keeping it protected.
Uh huh, sure……
You uh, read the restrictions on what they can and cant do, right?
Yeah, but I’m not stupid enough to trust that Anet is going to have the community’s best interest in mind.

There can be multiple account names you know with the same name ^-^
On topic: I think whispers, and map chat need to be reversed, new players should be able to ask for help if needed.

So, im stupid then? Like really, they stated in plain English, for once on what they could and couldnt do xD

To the quitters, can I have your gold please?
Nobody is quitting.. They are all just full of hot air.
Well you paid to access and have fun for 3 years BEFORE f2p players. That is what I call value. Next time you buy a game, wait for it to be on sale, but you will wait. It will become on sale eventualy, like everything.
Wealth transfer is still possible for f2p players. Expect to see lots of worthless items be sold in the TP for 10+ gold.
TP item list is restricted for F2P players.

My issue is not with Anet, but with Nexon’s influence. If you don’t know their history of destroying every game they touch with crazy pay walls then you should look it up. And make no mistake Nexon had some influence here.
So, im stupid then?
yes.

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/95982157-Account-types-Free-Core-HoTAll good! Restricted TP access, can’t access guild bank, can’t mail items, restricted access to chat so no bots. It’s fine, this will work out.
THE ONLY REAL PROBLEM, IMO, IS THAT NEW PLAYERS DON’T REALISE THAT THIS IS A TRIAL/RESTRICTED ACCOUNT, MAKE SURE TO LET THEM KNOW AND DON’T OVER DO IT ON THE REMINDERS TO BUY THE CORE-GAME, IT GETS ANNOYING AF
Apart from that, good move anet, make the trials account thing upgrade as accessible to players as the gem store, small reminders but not annoying popups every login. Also, make sure that you have restrictions on the gem store or the playerbase who has the core ( not trial ) game will get kittened off as gem prices will definitely rise. Also, make sure you can’t get the core ( non trial ) game off the gem store or everything you just did was for naught: They don’t pay money and they negatively affect the economy/gem trade ( if everyone who has trials does it ). Unless you want to make it expensive ( 150g ) but not overly.
Peace
They can sell gems but can’t buy them with gold. But they can receive mail of items and gold.
No they can’t, read the restrictions SLOWER. NO TRANSFER OF ITEMS OR GOLD FOR F2P ACCOUNTS.

Is your argument here that the game will become less fun with F2P players? If it isn’t, I’m not seeing where you’re saying the value comes from. Again, I paid for nothing that new players won’t be getting as well.

Thanks, but ive played other nexon games, and ill do what i have done in those other games if it comes to pass, leave.
Doesn’t look like anyone with a negative comment actually read the FAQ. I’ve been playing the game for 3 years now and I don’t feel that Anet owes me anything, but thanks for the wearable cathedral. The content up till now was more than worth its price.
When the new expansion comes, the old zones might empty a little. I see nothing wrong with letter free players in to help the community grow or maintain its size. Free accounts are kitten in chat and trade, but not core content and that is rare for most f2p games. All this is fine with me.
