Don’t think of it as a treadmill. Think of it as a marathon, where the participants who finished are already relaxing and drinking gatorade, when the organizers suddenly said, “Oh, the marathon isn’t finished yet, we’ve added an additional 20km to it just because, and well, you’ll have to run more if you want your completion to be counted.”

Except there wasn’t any indication of us getting this type of horizontal progression until several months after the game has been released, and even if this was the case, it just shows how premature the game is. Starting from playing beta and their teasers/trailers, we weren’t given the idea that we would be working towards time-gated content and equipment stats and NOT cosmetic as I thought this game was originally intended.

I guess I should really consider stopping from playing the game altogether UNTIL it’s really ready. I feel like I’m still playing beta.

If you feel like you’re playing beta, you clearly didn’t play the beta or at launch. Oh boy, this game was so broken back then (I’m not saying that there is no room for fixing today).

I’m sure there’s a tier after ascended. We already have it. It’s called legendary. Sure it may not have better stats, but the way they’re allowing free stat change is still an advantage.

No, an itemspiral (or gear treadmill) is when the developers continuously release new tiers of gear in line with content, and gating said content behind that gear. That’s why it’s a treadmill; you’re not really making any progress, it’s just a case of +1’s for the player and a +10 for the raid boss.

Ascended is merely a step, providing that they don’t introduce further tiers above Ascended, since the gear they’re introducing now is still the same tier as the top tier we have now.

Arenanet is sitting behind their desks, feet up, martini..saying "Guys, great job on ascended gear. Lets hear it for the team. Good job everyone. "

T11 in WoW had probably the same stat differential compared to T10 that ascended has on exotic.

You know, they seem to be so caught up on the textbook definition of gear treadmill that they don’t understand what we’re trying to say.

Yes. They’re releasing ascended gear bit by bit. So what? Imagine they would have added ascended weapons, armor and trinkets when they introduced ascended trinkets last year … and would now add a new type for weapons, armor and trinkets. Yep, I would be complaining, too, then.

Levelcap is another theme, but the same thematic. They said no Itemspiral. Nice!
But this was a lie. What is if they lie by the levelcap, too? I don’t trust ANet anymore, so I think I must looknfor a new Game if ascended Gear comes out. Or ANet doesn’t risk to loose many players and think about an option to handle it with ascended, legemdary and exotic.

From a WvWer(in a WvW only guild) who oftenly switch between 3 different toons for group need, this is the worst ever to happen after the ascended trinkets. I only geared 2 of 3 with Ascended trinkets and since I dont pve I dont have any Ascended backpack yet. Although I see this coming since they introduce us this “should have them with game launch” tier, my love of gw2 just died a little bit; I think I was naive enough to believe Anet would consider not releasing the rest of Ascended gear.

2.Close the gap between legendary and exotic, hmmm close what gap? I get it! the gap of time to acquire one piece!
3.Stat increase are little. Oh well, After they release armor its 8% in total doesnt count base attack and defense yet. Yes, it does not effect pve that much, but it effect WvW a lot, a fully Ascended army will have a better chance against a fully exotic army, and this is why the whole Ascended gear thing does not make any sense. it influence players who does not pve that much more than who pve and actually like farming. And I am still kitten ed about you cant get Ascended back item through WvW, they can make some requirements that only hardcore WvWer can get to prevent pve population flood into WvW for backpack if they do so. Anet saying look WvWers we get a lot of pve content that we really dont want you to ignore it, stop enjoying what you are doing and start farming.

Oh and how about another brand new tier that may release after Ascended, and it was also “planned on launched”? We already know Anet’s words cant be trusted.

We might get new skills or utilities, U never know.

I really don’t get why everyone says Legendaries having this option to switch stats is an ‘advantage’. It’s more of a compensation.

Legendaries takes around a year for the average casual to get, and the nor al player utilises 2 weapon types at most. Unless Ascended weapons are gonna take you half a year to get, I don’t really know what kind of an advantage a Legendary has over 2 ascended weapons.

And adding Ascended items isn’t an itemspiral or a gear treadmill, it’s just filling in a gap that was supposed to be in the game at launch. Now if they start doing something like raising the level cap every 6 months and bringing out new gear…. Then I can get my critic rant glasses on.

When comparing an ascended ring to that of an exotic with a jewel covering the exact same three stats, the ascended actually provides a greater benefit than the exotic and jewel combined. That’s not including the use of the upgrade slot and it doesn’t include being able to make it “(infused)”.

That’s per trinket.

Add all the trinkets
Now add the differences between the exotic armor/weapons to the up coming ascended versions.

The fact is that it will render existing BiS gear obsolete (aka No longer BiS) and the difference between someone with and without will actually be rather significant.

Here’s a little food for thought.

To your average runner who simply does it to stay in reasonably good shape. Shaving a second off your 10km run is not all that much.

To a professional athlete, it’s an eternity.

When you are talking competitive and skilled players fighting each other in WvW, that extra bonuses to stats makes all the difference.

Now you can ignore the fact that they are introducing new BiS gear to replace the existing BiS gear for the armor and weapon slots. You can argue that it’s not a new tier and say that they are just finishing off an existing set. But you can’t ignore that by making such an argument, and following that logic, that they are simply finishing the spiral they had already created with the introduction of the ascended trinkets.

-Second: There is NO higher tier content being added with ascended weapons. Meaning you don’t even need them for any part of the game other than just having them with their MINIMAL stat increase. If you don’t want one, don’t craft one. It will not matter.

-Third: This is not a GearTreadmill nor is it a ItemSpiral. Those occur when new tiers are added every 2-4 months. It has now been over a year and we don’t even have a full tier added ( just rings, back pieces, trinkets and the soon to be weapons).

The thought of rage quitting a game over a new tier weapon with a tiny stat increase just sounds absurd. Do people expect Anet to still just hand out weapon skins 5 years down the road? I love new skins, but skin wars 2 won’t survive. People will not care in 5 years when they have over 600 new weapon skins in their bank. I think they have found a great balance to please both types of players. New tier for those who wont better stats but minimal enough so that no one needs them to appeal to those who don’t want them.

in the end I feel really bad for everyone who has or will rage quit. When all is said and done, I think Anet is doing a great job here. The game is growing, changing and in my opinion getting better with age. I feel bad for everyone who will miss out and such a great MMO down the road.

1. ANET lied. If they didnt lie about that they lied that the game would be feature complete at launch. Oh wait, what about this?:

2. Go read that article on ascended gear again. ANET said there is no higher tier being added this year. As to your “You dont need one”: Why do you or other people need it? There is no harder content in the game for it so why do people want it? They have no good reason for it but we have many kitten good reasons against it.

3. Yet new items are being added with significant time gating and now even large monetary requirements. Not to mention once you start this ride it can not end. After the tier is complete people will whine again. Guess what happens then?

Umm read the OP’s post again pls.. This topic has everything to do with WvW.

I’m pretty sure I said months ago that the moment they introduce either level progression or significant armor and weapon progression that’s quits for me.

Thinking back, I don’t know what anet was really talking about initially when they first realise about how violent of a reaction we had against ascended weapons. So what was the idea, to say they admit it was wrong that the implementation was wrong and they won’t be moving forward on it and so they only introduced trinkets etc. However, i’m sure everyone had a feeling that this wasn’t going to be the end. All anet was doing was not saying they’re sorry but instead buying time for us to get USED to the concept that ascended gear is the new tier then slowly “ease” it in until hopefully, we’ve all forgotten about the original focus of the game. We all knew this day was coming, heck, even anet hinted it a couple of times.

This could have been a great game with limitless potentials but yup, damage is done to almost irreversible and it’s just going to accelerate downhill from here…

Wish I could roll back time when it was halloween last year.. I think that was the pinnacle of gw2 for me before it all went down hill ( some brief uphill ) then straight down again.
