So much panic, so much over the top screaming. If you play the game after the introduction and don’t like it fine. If it becomes a question of the zerg with the better stats (funny in itself) ‘winning’ then complain.
The thing it that they have already done what you are telling them not to do. There is zero chance that the people responsible for the game will suddenly say Tuesday morning ‘hey wait a minute this will kill the game!’. They have already been down that road and feel that it will not ‘kill the game’.
It could very well result in people leaving. But that has already been taken into account and will probably be lost in the noise of people coming and going for other reasons.

Talk to Turbine and SOE/LA about LOTRO and SWG.

Turbine officially apologized to their players….after 2 years and going F2P and burning on last fumes. SWG…legendary story.

Im sure theyve all “taken it into account” rofl

Indeed. What happened to SWG can happen to any of these games. Game companies seem to think their decisions are made of gold plated adamantium with unobtainium rivets. It’s one thing for players to suggest what they do want, it’s another to not listen and not implement something they really don’t want.

I guess we will see. Sometimes you have to learn by doing. Took me a few hours to check out other MMO’s in preparation of me making my decision to stay or leave. I may have fun in game and have got my monies worth, but I usually speak with attendance on whether I accept the direction a game goes. If a game has a sub then I speak with my wallet too. I left SWG, WoW, Vanguard, WAR, AOC and SWTOR on a whim because of a few decisions made by devs and their companies, even when I was having fun.

After finding some live games I could venture off too, I once again came across some upcoming titles that look very promising. Icarus/Bless/BnS and Black Desert.

Oh yes, forgot about SWTOR, biggest failure in MMO industry, where 3 “major” companies (BW, EA and LA) thought they had a “WoW killer on a plate”. EA paid 800 000 000 dollars just to buy Bioware+all ongoing costs (300 000 000 dollars to produce+running expenses).

Yah, im sure those also have “Taken it into account” rofl

Man, i wish they hadnt wiped SWTORs pre-launch forums so everyone could see how many people told them thakittens going to fail. It would be a fantastic case-study now.

What is your point? Those companies made decisions based on what they thought was in their best interest. Did they not get it ‘right’ yes. LOTRO is still one of the best crafted games out there, SWG I don’t play. My point was that you personally have zero say in what happens to a game, accept it or not.

It’s taken me a year, probably just because I let hope override intelligence, but I’ve come to realize that. GW2 is not the game for me, and never will be. It was never about actually making a good game. It was about making one that’s just good enough to support a zerg/farming/buy-your-gear monetization scheme.

So I think you are right – and I’ve been deluding myself all these months.

Plenty of people thought Guild Wars 1 was grindy as hell…it wasn’t for gear. But the gear here, even though it’s BIS…it just doesn’t make that much of a difference.

I ground out multiple sets of Obsidian armor for various alts. I enjoyed very much doing that. But once I had that gear, my stats were still exactly the same as the guy who had the cheapest set of gear. And I thought that was revolutionary, and a very, very good thing.

Skill and imagination made that game so much fun to play.

Having better numbers than someone else just because I had more time to grind out some gear doesn’t make me a better player. Which is what I hated about all those other MMO’s.

Gah…I don’t know why I bother. I’ve said this a hundred times on these forums. ArenaNet aren’t trying to make a good game. There’s no pride or prestige in anything in GW2. It’s all fluff, or bought with the credit card. And always will be. I don’t think they’re going to change at all.

And I’d be willing to bet that the next time there’s a sharp dropoff in players, they’ll add more tier gear to grind…

So you ground out stuff. And you were happy to ground out stuff.

I got the max titles for the skills so I could have BIS skills on many characters including Sunspear, Lightbringer, Norn, Asura, Deldrimor and Ebon Vanguard.

And if you say those skills didn’t mean a whole lot more to GW 1 PvE than BIS gear here, I’d say you were dead wrong. Do you know why Anet limited those skills to 3 per skill bar? Because even with three you were too OP to play normal content. If you could have 5 or 6 of those skills you’d be unbeatable.

So you say over and over again my gear was the best, but your skills weren’t. And yet somehow that’s okay with you. The question is why are skills and grinding out that different from gear.

I say it’s in your head.

Why should the staff respond to such a childish thread? It’s more people bashing gear with useless statistics and empty predictions. Most of these arguments had no traction when ascended trinkets came out and they have even less now. If you want the gear, great, go and work for it. If you don’t want it, then don’t bother with it. Ultimately it’s players choice and all the math in the world makes not a difference.

Why would they react, you might not like it but they are part of the discussion and doesn’t go against the rules. Your topic isn’t very conducive to a good discussion, considering the amount of hyperbole your topic is full of.

(I don’t particularly enjoy the thought of ascended gear, but I also know that a lot of players wanted something to “work” on and I also know that guild wars 1(the game players on the forum tend to hold with great esteem was way more grindy than this).

ascended should be available with badges and something u only get through wvw. maybe tokens or something that drop from tower caps and keep caps? not laurels, not gold and also not crafting. as wvw i would rather use the mystic forge to make them with mats that can only drop in wvw.

how about a certain amout of tower tokens, certain amount of badges, certain amount of keep tokens and an exotic version of the acended weapon u want.

I would be a very happy person if this came true.

Dragonite ore is only availiable through Temple Chests, world bosses or taking keeps in WvW. Taking keeps in WvW is probably quicker in an organised zerg than the other options.

Oh I’ve been reading the thread and I’ve been laughing my head off the whole time that people can be that jaded. What people have been stating has been nothing but opinion and conjecture. It is my opinion that ANet has kept their promises, though perhaps not to the letter. The “Manifesto” is like the Pirate Code, more a set of guidelines than actual rules. And as for the math, well, there’s one huge variable that you can never take into account, and that’s how good the player is behind the keyboard. So please, accept the inevitable, and rub some bacon on it.

Hahahah. No, NOW you have an disadvantage if you have not this new gear. With bufffood and so on this disadvantage is big. So lets met in WvW and you wear yellow gear and I exotic. Winner gets 500g.
The point is that ANet said, if you don’t play one or two years, you have NO disadvantage.
But now you have this.

And here you see the unknown factor I spoke of. Let me point out three things you don’t know. 1. Why would I wear rare gear when I have a perfectly good set of exotic? 2. Why would I play WvW when I absolutely hate it? I’m sorry, but a duel isn’t a good enough reason. 3. How would you know me when you saw me? And why would I point myself out to you knowing you were gunning for me? As I said, the human factor is a variable that can’t be calculated. Besides, WvW is siege warfare, which is won in groups. What most of the people are underestimating and what some other players are not is that this is a first step. If anet pulls this off, that’s it. They know they can do this and that they can do it again. The first step is the hardest but if you give in then it’s all over. Next up, 2014, transcended gear! Level progression!

If this is the kind of game you’re looking for then yes, by all means, support the direction of where anet is headed. But if this is not the direction you thought we were heading into, if you came into the game hoping to be able to enjoy a game with horizontal progression, well presented stories and innovative design/mechanics then this is the last chance for us to take our stand before we split ways.

Again let I remind everyone, ascended vs exotics is ~510 stat difference, ~312 stats in it’s current implementation and we haven’t even considered the extra weapon damage ascended gear will have.

I’ll leave you with this old quote by the Anet studio design director said in last year AMA

“More generally, I hope we’ve been clear that GW2 is not a game with virtually no stat progression in it like GW1 was. That’s why GW2 shipped with a higher level cap, and with a hard separation between PvE and PvP. In GW1 we never advanced the level cap through four campaigns/expansions. The game design didn’t allow for it. But GW2 was designed without those restrictions, and we’ve always expected that we will someday raise the level cap in GW2.”

What YOU don’t understand is that the majority of players seem to want some form of gear progression or stuff to work on. The most important thing YOU fail to understand is, they gave you a year to come to terms with it, IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. No amount of forum QQ from a very small and insignificant subset of gamers that cling to a idealogy that the greater market rejected is going to change that.

Arenanet made a big open game and thought players were going to enjoy it and that was proven wrong within the first week WHEN players like myself rushed to 80 and a few others continously ran all the dungeons got their rewards and start complaining about the lack of ENDGAME (well I mainly rushed for money and WvW reasons). These are all facts you cannot deny.

The current trajectory is a different than what Arenanet anticipated, but it is the nature of making a mass market product. You either adopt or go out of business clingying to a idealogy that has proven unsustainable in the market you are attempting to compete in and they choose the adult

tl;dr

YOU fail to understand that complaining on the forum is not going to change the reality that ascended gear is going. They gave you 1 year to accept this inevitability.

all you can do is provide suggestions that steer them from the way you acquire ascended gear, but make no mistake it is coming. You either accept it or quit.

I didn’t completely answer your question when you asked me the same thing so I thought about it a bit more.

The biggest difference I see between the EotN skills and Ascended gear is that the skills did not replace something that players previously did or earned. They did not make anything else purchased obsolete. While some people may feel Exotics are cheap and easy to obtain, not everyone feels that way and is one of the reasons they may complain about the added vertical progression.

Another thing is that the PvE skills were named that because they were not allowed in any form of PvP. That is also not the case for Ascended gear and is why some of the WvW crowd is upset. Especially as that gear was not available at the same time in that game mode.

The last thing that came to mind is that GW1 was very dependent on specific builds. Some builds took advantage of PvE skills, others did not. Gear is not optional. Everyone has to wear it. It will affect every event, challenge, build decision, etc. Many outcomes and decisions are impacted by a gear change.

I’ll see if I can stir up any additional thoughts.

Ascended gear stats advantage over exotics is 5%. Thats 70% if your enemy have all ascended gears. My only problem in ascended gear are the materials on getting them. If we could actually get another way of getting those, that would be nice later on. But I think this progress is necessary in any MMO and I hope ANET see that a lot of people aren’t into grinding these and help us out a little bit.

They will help you by:

Adding new +11 infusions you will have to grind
Adding ascended armor that youll have to grind
Adding ascended sigils/runes you will have to grind
And adding a new tier of gear so you can do it all over again just to be in the same place yo were before they added ascended.

Enjoy this ultimattley “deep” and “engaing” world.

My opinion about ascended items is 100% in reverse of what Anet is proposing. Ascended items should be neither craftable nor for sale at traders. They should be unique rewards for a heroic action, e.g. defeating an end level boss. Very hard to drop and therefore very valuable and not account or soul bound on use.
I feel that Anet is proposing these changes because the current market is overflowed with existing items. So they create a new layer. And that will last for another year and then?
Players want to be unique. Make it so that they can find unique gear and weapons, making them different from others. By playing quests and slaying monsters. THAT is something you can do for many years. Creating a new level of items won’t last for long.

Honest question, why is it that it’s okay that some people can’t live with cosmetic only progression, but it’s not okay that some people can’t live with gear progression?

Maybe ANet figures that the progression demographic will follow through on their threats to quit and the no progression demographic won’t. After all, they can go to other games that feature gear progression. Where can we go?

Progression demographic has games that do progression much bettrer than GW2. Old and few on horizon. And they certanly wont be satisfied with ascended.

There is a major conflict between players who want gear progression and those who don’t. Ascended is what you get when you try to cater to both.

Exactly. It will satisfy neither. Thats the funny part.

It is funny and I’ve also made this point from the beginning. Any VP will create a gear grind and those favoring horizontal progression will not be happy. OTOH, if you look at all the arguments for VP, and you even see it in this thread, the recurring theme is that what we have seen so far is totally insignificant. I always find the argument from insignificance humorous. I mean, if the best you can say about something is that it is insignificant what does that say about it? But, it’s sorta true and the hard core VP grinder is not going to be satisfied grinding their kitten off for insignificant gains in power. Good insight here.

Actually, I don’t admit to being a content locus I made a conscious decision based on WvW. A content locus is someone who burns though content and demand more, I haven’t even gone through half the content. Still havent done legendary (wont), havent done dungeons, doesn’t grind for anything except recently doing QG and invasions. My biggest issues are all pvp related anyways.

Actually, I hate gear based games my reason for burning through content was for another game mode, but i am not naive enough to delude myself into thinking everyone else does. I quit a lot MMO because they became work and guild wars 2 will follow that path if I deem it so, but I don’t react based on speculation nor do I care enough about alts to worry about them.

While you might be right that I am underestimating the players that hate vertical progression, you wrong that they are sufficient enough to sustain the game at the level Arenanet deems it so. hence why they have been improving rewards, hence why they added fractures, hence why are adding ascended gear.

Anyways, ultimately the difference between me and you is I don’t inherently hate vertical progression, I do hate it IF it is infinite and requires constant changing and guild wars 2 doesnt. I especially hate it when content requires keeping up with vertical progression and guild wars 2 doesn’t fit that bill, YET.

You just draw a line little higher than some of us.

But, vertical progression is infinite by definition, and they said they dont intend to stop it
But they wont vertically progress until you will go around one-shotting everything, at some point you will HAVE TO enter the treadmill so, from pragmatic standpoint its better to enter it now than be left behind when it happens.

Anet seperated PvP into WvW and SPvP and said, from the very beginning, WvW was never meant to be balanced. That’s why gear is allowed in WvW.

I don’t think exotics are so expensive that it’s such an issue that we have to replace them…particularly because the content doesn’t require it to be replaced.

As for the skills in Guild Wars 1…they were still more neccesary (or at least they’ll make a bigger difference in the long term, than ascended weapons will.

I played Rift. I needed a specific amount of focus to queue for a dungeon. Not to beat it…to queue for it.

That’s why I say it’s not a treadmill. In games with gear treadmills there’s a new tier of gear every 3-4 months. If Anet introduced a tier of gear every year and a half, slowly in stages, I wouldn’t call it a treadmill.

Thats why youll see “transended” weapons next year. Its a gear tremill, no point in denying it.

Sorry but without the content requiring the upgrade it’s not a treadmill. If I don’t need that gear to play the game…then it’s not a treadmill.

Really, so you claim they will just raise stats until you go around one-shotting everything you come across. rofl

Its a treadmill. Like pretty much any other MMO out there. Diference is that pretty much any other MMO out there does it better than GW2.

I don’t play other MMOs because I think they do it badly. You’re entitled to your opinion of course. But just because something has slight vertical progression doesn’t make it a treadmill.

After all, there was already vertical progression in the game from day one, and no one said a word about it. Rare 80 to Exotic 80 is vertical progression.

There won’t be another gear set. Here’s why: see the image below? That’s a CMYK color wheel. ANet starts their gear out with Cyan, moves to Green? Then Yellow, Red (actually a red-orange), Magenta (ascended), and blue (which is actually blue-violet AKA Legendaries). They’ve got both the primary and secondary colors, and now there’s nothing else to add.

..Thus ends this terrible argument that there will be any kind of gear treadmill. You can see from the gap at launch, which was missing magenta, that ascended gear was planned far before launch during the initial colorizing of gearsets.

Ill bet you next tier will be teal

Though i suppose level cap may came in first obsoleting all your gear, no matter what you wear. At some point in gear treadmill you just reset crap becuse of new players.

I would. Because one treadmill is set at a shallower incline than the other one does not make it “not a treadmill.” People get on real treadmills not because they want to go somewhere, but because they want a result — usually, cardio. A lot of them dislike the process (reading or listening to music to distract themselves), but they want the result.

It’s not about needing the gear, either. It’s about keeping the players who can go to other games to feed their playstyle, while hoping that the ones who don’t want this crap will stay anyway, because there’s nowhere else to go. Don’t you defend so many aspects of GW2 so vehemently because this game gives you enjoyment you cannot find in other games? So, you don’t value having BiS gear. There are people who do.

Well, until level cap they will just raise legendary to new stats just like ascended. They made legendaries tradable for a reason. Imagine how much $$ is potentionally 1 legendary worth
