So you ground out stuff. And you were happy to ground out stuff.

I got the max titles for the skills so I could have BIS skills on many characters including Sunspear, Lightbringer, Norn, Asura, Deldrimor and Ebon Vanguard.

And if you say those skills didn’t mean a whole lot more to GW 1 PvE than BIS gear here, I’d say you were dead wrong. Do you know why Anet limited those skills to 3 per skill bar? Because even with three you were too OP to play normal content. If you could have 5 or 6 of those skills you’d be unbeatable.

So you say over and over again my gear was the best, but your skills weren’t. And yet somehow that’s okay with you. The question is why are skills and grinding out that different from gear.

I say it’s in your head.

I didn’t completely answer your question when you asked me the same thing so I thought about it a bit more.

The biggest difference I see between the EotN skills and Ascended gear is that the skills did not replace something that players previously did or earned. They did not make anything else purchased obsolete. While some people may feel Exotics are cheap and easy to obtain, not everyone feels that way and is one of the reasons they may complain about the added vertical progression.

Another thing is that the PvE skills were named that because they were not allowed in any form of PvP. That is also not the case for Ascended gear and is why some of the WvW crowd is upset. Especially as that gear was not available at the same time in that game mode.

The last thing that came to mind is that GW1 was very dependent on specific builds. Some builds took advantage of PvE skills, others did not. Gear is not optional. Everyone has to wear it. It will affect every event, challenge, build decision, etc. Many outcomes and decisions are impacted by a gear change.

I’ll see if I can stir up any additional thoughts.

Anet seperated PvP into WvW and SPvP and said, from the very beginning, WvW was never meant to be balanced. That’s why gear is allowed in WvW.

I don’t think exotics are so expensive that it’s such an issue that we have to replace them…particularly because the content doesn’t require it to be replaced.

As for the skills in Guild Wars 1…they were still more neccesary (or at least they’ll make a bigger difference in the long term, than ascended weapons will.

Thats why youll see “transended” weapons next year. Its a gear tremill, no point in denying it.

Sorry but without the content requiring the upgrade it’s not a treadmill. If I don’t need that gear to play the game…then it’s not a treadmill.

I played Rift. I needed a specific amount of focus to queue for a dungeon. Not to beat it…to queue for it.

That’s why I say it’s not a treadmill. In games with gear treadmills there’s a new tier of gear every 3-4 months. If Anet introduced a tier of gear every year and a half, slowly in stages, I wouldn’t call it a treadmill.

Sorry, but anyone who understands VP understands that it creates a treadmill—by design and definition. It’s sole reason for existence is a theory that it motivates play. That is, it gives a sense of progression and a requirement to follow the path of the power curve. It motivates play because it’s self-evident that if you don’t follow the power curve eventually you will be unable to play the game. Again, this is self-evident on the face of it—i.e., it requires no argument. Any rational human looking at an infinite integer series understands that eventually the ascending power of the game will make it impossible to play if you don’t follow the power curve. It is a mandatory grind. Developers know this about VP and that’s why they choose to employ it. To argue against what is obvious just means that VP is not actually understood.

Ascended gear stats advantage over exotics is 5%. Thats 70% if your enemy have all ascended gears.

i don’t think you know how percentages work. please stop throwing random math around, it just creates confusion in the discussion.

Nice name there….Your post seems credible…

pardon the confusion, i’m suffering from sleep deprivation at the moment. alcohol is not helping either.
i meant ratio and proportion

for clarification’s sake

suppose an exotic piece has +100 pow, then that would mean, by his reasoning that an ascended piece would have +105 pow(5% increase).

if player A had a 6-piece exotic set, he would have +600 pow
now, and this part is important, by that 5% increase, player B with 6-piece ascended +630 pow.

now pay attention, a 30point increase, is still 5%, not 70%.

We all do as we must to make our way in this world and unfortunately,
we have to do things others may qualify as “evil”.

Itemspiral and grinding. Two things we were promised were very different with GW2 compared to other MMOs. Not looking good on keeping those promises atm.

Those of us who were screaming when they introduced the first round of Itemspiral were told “Oh its just this one time.” Ya, right. Quit for 6 months and I’m so far behind gear wise I have zero interest in playing this game. I already did this crap in wow for 6-7 years. GW2 has become a gear score gotta have the right build/class min/max game. Same old, same old. Play the way you want rofl.

I do play the way I want. I have a burst build for my thief, like everyone else, then I have a high-mobility, no-stealth CC thief and my personal favorite: my “invincible” condition thief. I haven’t been grinding for anything. I play WvW and PvP, and rarely if ever touch PvE. I play exactly how I want.

You just draw a line little higher than some of us.

But, vertical progression is infinite by definition, and they said they dont intend to stop it
But they wont vertically progress until you will go around one-shotting everything, at some point you will HAVE TO enter the treadmill so, from pragmatic standpoint its better to enter it now than be left behind when it happens.

You are right my line is a little higher than some of you, but apparently so it is the same for the majority of MMORPG and possibly guild wars 2 players. Arenanet had 1 year to decide whether to go through it and the fact that they haven’t backed down only shows that the line is higher for the majority than you guys. The reality is not everybody is going to like the changes to the game, but Arenanet apparently seem confident that it wont backfire on them. As a matter of fact very few actually know what they want.

There is no evidence that this new change will lead to infinite progression like WoW or DCUO, but I digress.

If I am not having fun then I will quit the game. I have left MMOs that I thought were not fun and guild wars 2 is applicable IF i don’t think it is fun, but you know what? I have played the game for over 1000 hours for the small payment of 60 bucks (equivalent to 6 long island Ice at a decent club) so I got my fun and money’s worth.

There won’t be another gear set. Here’s why: see the image below? That’s a CMYK color wheel. ANet starts their gear out with Cyan, moves to Green? Then Yellow, Red (actually a red-orange), Magenta (ascended), and blue (which is actually blue-violet AKA Legendaries). They’ve got both the primary and secondary colors, and now there’s nothing else to add.

..Thus ends this terrible argument that there will be any kind of gear treadmill. You can see from the gap at launch, which was missing magenta, that ascended gear was planned far before launch during the initial colorizing of gearsets.

Ill bet you next tier will be teal

So you’re saying that there will be a tier above legendary? Not likely.

Well, until level cap they will just raise legendary to new stats just like ascended. They made legendaries tradable for a reason. Imagine how much $$ is potentionally 1 legendary worth

you keep saying ppl buy legendaries do you have any numbers to back up the claim or it is one of those things players say to make themselves feel better?

No it only makes part of a treadmill with out the mobs or harder content that you MUST have its not a full treadmill.

In game design we don’t have the concept of a part-treadmill and a full-treadmill. The classes we are working with are no mandatory treadmill(s) with horizontal progression and a mandatory treadmill with vertical progression. And, that’s one of VP’s largest pieces of excess baggage.

It is a red herring to argue about whether power level ‘2’ is required for the content released under power level ‘1’. If you understand VP then you understand that the power level will rise (vertical), and that it will rise continuously over time (progression). The concept is very simple. And, if you truly understood it you wouldn’t be arguing that power level ‘2’ is insignificant, because you would know that that leaves out the rest of the number series (3,4,5,…,n). It is self-evident that at some point you will not be able to play the game if you don’t grind out the power curve.

ascended gear is the biggest lie anet does.. they dont know that they gonna destroy the game with it… i see it coming that ppl gonna leave because of it.. already 5 ppl i know said when more ascended comes into the game they gonna quit.. i mean anet shouldnt forget that this year elder scrolls online comes out.. ppl who start to play it will never come back to gw2 because other ppl have way better gear then them and tehy are miles behind

TESO & FFRR are not even on the same playing field as GW2, why? They’re xplatform console, boxes within walls for both those games, not real mmorpg’s & it shows once playing.

I think all these angry posts sound quite ridiculous. Here are my thoughts!

-First: Anet stated last November that Ascended gear was supposed to be in game at launch, but didn’t make it do to budget and time constraints.

-Second: There is NO higher tier content being added with ascended weapons. Meaning you don’t even need them for any part of the game other than just having them with their MINIMAL stat increase. If you don’t want one, don’t craft one. It will not matter.

-Third: This is not a GearTreadmill nor is it a ItemSpiral. Those occur when new tiers are added every 2-4 months. It has now been over a year and we don’t even have a full tier added ( just rings, back pieces, trinkets and the soon to be weapons).

The thought of rage quitting a game over a new tier weapon with a tiny stat increase just sounds absurd. Do people expect Anet to still just hand out weapon skins 5 years down the road? I love new skins, but skin wars 2 won’t survive. People will not care in 5 years when they have over 600 new weapon skins in their bank. I think they have found a great balance to please both types of players. New tier for those who wont better stats but minimal enough so that no one needs them to appeal to those who don’t want them.

in the end I feel really bad for everyone who has or will rage quit. When all is said and done, I think Anet is doing a great job here. The game is growing, changing and in my opinion getting better with age. I feel bad for everyone who will miss out and such a great MMO down the road.

Thank god a voice of reason exists in this thread. I was considering answering all of the crazy tinfoil hat claims that have been expressed so far myself. Ascended gear was supposed to be a tier in the initial release of the game for the love of all that is fluffy. In a year, if they’re implementing a NEW set of gear, then I will find the wacky doomsayer, coolaid drinking mania a slight bit more reasonable. Instead you should be glaring at the time gating on the new gear. There’s a bit more reason for eyebrow raising in that decision.

It was supposed to be in release but its taken over a year to implement (and theyve still had misteps)? You seriously believe that? This decision was made by the higher ups to help keep the care bears and make more money. It was not planned for release.

Just because game design is lacing in the idea dose not mean it dose not exists. You do not need any thing beyond a green i bet if your good enofe you can play with blues or even weights. In a way there always been a part treadmill in this game but it was so easy that it did not seem like one. Now with the new items taking a bit more work to get then just the “here your free items handed to you” ppl try to farm the argument in this way to make it seem as if they have a point. Sadly they are using a very flawed set of logic steps. Simply put this has nothing to do with having stronger gear this is all about not being handed items.

If two Guyd fight against, both are good Players. One use full exotic, one use full ascended gear. The ascended gear guy will win. And Guild Wars 2 said, you will win with skill, not gear. So now I -> must <- grind to get this stuff, to have no disadvantage.

Or you can get slightly better and neutralise his slight advantage— not that WvW is often 1v1 anyway. People always come up with this scenario (most who don’t WvW), but that is one of the rarest scenarios in WvW.

It’s difficult to just walk up and faceroll someone just because of a slight stat advantage. If you kite, fight intelligently, learn the enemy’s moves, and are patient, you can beat just about anyone.

sadly it is too late.

They started down this track in november 2012.

A track of completely throwing out all of the things that they said not only they wouldn’t do but also the things they said would be in the game.

the power creep is here people, people kept denying it would come but it’s here. Will they still be in denial when ascended becomes the old gear and they add yet another tier because they want people to farm longer for the materials to make that with a crafting skill of 600?

In games like path of exile where an idiot pays up to 10k just to design an in game item.I wouldnt be surprise there will be quite a number of people buying legendaries in this game.

DO YOU HAVE ANY NUMBERS? this isn’t about what some random person does.

BTW I am not denying the possibility that someone hasn’t bought a legendary. But for the amount of QQ you guys seem to making about ALL those potentially gemadary (gem bought legendary) buyers, you would think it means a lot of the legendary owners bought theirs and it seems you have no evidence to support that claim.

To you its worth it.To others nope…………

To those they quit or QQ on the forum or deal with it.

Given that this is an MMORPG forum, QQ will be the chosen route which comes with feeling better about yourself instead of moving on like an adult and a little of a circle jerking.

I tear up people in wvw who are undoubtedly geared with ascended trinkets and full exo when I’m in my under leveled char. Ascended trinkets aren’t going to break anything. Period. Skill determines the outcome, not the gear. I can’t believe the outrage people are in over this.

No matter how you rationalize it, all you whiners and wannabe developers will never get everything you want. Don’t like it? Go play something else. If you’re gonna stay than kitten up.

Post a video of you tearing up a fully geared and lvled guy on forum with normal white gear then i believe you.

He’s level 67 and no he’s not in white gear. My point being, Ascended gear with 10% better stats isn’t going to break the game or set the skill bar any higher. It’s based on player knowledge, skill and experience.

And no, I’m not making a video to prove it.

Hahaha. Do you want to make a battle? You with yellow gear and i am full exotic? Winner gets 500 gold.
When two guys fight against, one in full Ascended gear one in full exotic and both have the same skill, same class and so on, the full exotic will lose.

Honestly, if you want to show off the size of your E-wiener, that’s cool, but I don’t care.

What most of the people are underestimating and what some other players are not is that this is a first step. If anet pulls this off, that’s it. They know they can do this and that they can do it again. The first step is the hardest but if you give in then it’s all over. Next up, 2014, transcended gear! Level progression!

What YOU don’t understand is that the majority of players seem to want some form of gear progression or stuff to work on. The most important thing YOU fail to understand is, they gave you a year to come to terms with it, IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. No amount of forum QQ from a very small and insignificant subset of gamers that cling to a idealogy that the greater market rejected is going to change that.

Arenanet made a big open game and thought players were going to enjoy it and that was proven wrong within the first week WHEN players like myself rushed to 80 and a few others continously ran all the dungeons got their rewards and start complaining about the lack of ENDGAME (well I mainly rushed for money and WvW reasons). These are all facts you cannot deny.

The current trajectory is a different than what Arenanet anticipated, but it is the nature of making a mass market product. You either adopt or go out of business clingying to a idealogy that has proven unsustainable in the market you are attempting to compete in and they choose the adult

tl;dr

YOU fail to understand that complaining on the forum is not going to change the reality that ascended gear is going. They gave you 1 year to accept this inevitability.

all you can do is provide suggestions that steer them from the way you acquire ascended gear, but make no mistake it is coming. You either accept it or quit.

I do understand and most of your post I have actually discussed in remaining part of the post that you have chosen to not quote lol.

I understand that if active vertical progression is the way they want it, then by all means, they’re heading in the right direction for you. Who am I trying to convey to are the players who actually want more horizontal progression than vertical, and that if that is what they want, they have to stand up for themselves now, tell Anet that this is why the joined the game because after this patch, it’s pretty much too late. Also, i’m pretty sure the players who want horizontal progression are a pretty big bunch of us in GW2. Pretty much everyone during the outcry when ascended was first introduced is one of us though an unknown number of them are probably gone by now. In addition, a lot of people did take gw2 manifesto as horizontal progression, similar to its predecessor but we were mislead?

Also, while expressing my view on the forum may not do anything in the end, I would be happy that at least I tried.

No, they’ve been slowly releasing it to give people a goal aside from legendaries to work for while they work on adding more permanent content and other reasons to keep playing.

i love how you say “goal.” This is the very definition of a treadmill, there should be other reasons to play a game. for me its WvW. If youre only way to keep people playing is by giving them higher levels of gear, theres a problem, and its against everything they have said from the start.

Which just proves my point of anet being told they need to do this to keep players and make money. You realize that they could have added all this new content as just skins for weapons and no stat increase. made it so equipment would do different effects for fractals, or PvE content. and not ruin WvW balance just so Tommy can spend weeks on his shiny new sword that lets him do more damage to the brainless npcs

I would. Because one treadmill is set at a shallower incline than the other one does not make it “not a treadmill.” People get on real treadmills not because they want to go somewhere, but because they want a result — usually, cardio. A lot of them dislike the process (reading or listening to music to distract themselves), but they want the result.

It’s not about needing the gear, either. It’s about keeping the players who can go to other games to feed their playstyle, while hoping that the ones who don’t want this crap will stay anyway, because there’s nowhere else to go. Don’t you defend so many aspects of GW2 so vehemently because this game gives you enjoyment you cannot find in other games? So, you don’t value having BiS gear. There are people who do.

To me, a gear treadmill is when they keep introducing statistically better gear to the game. If Ascended is the highest it gets to and we don’t see a new level cap with better gear 6 months down the line, its fine.

If in 6 months they go ‘Oh, we got Heroic gear now guys’, then its gonna be GW2, meet
the delete key.

I reluctantly accepted the introduction of the Ascended bullcrap a while ago, but I’m not gonna accept another step in this direction once the armors & weapons are released. No levelcap increase and no stupid “stronger infusions” they mentioned back in november.

I guess that depends on what they mean by “stronger” infusions, really. If they just mean that infusions will have +10 AR instead of +5 AR so that groups can progress to even deeper levels… I really don’t see a problem with that.

Now if they mean +10 Power or Precision instead of +5… then maybe that could add up to be a problem.

Terms evolve with use. A treadmill is a walking machine on which you walk and walk to end up in the same place. In addition, if you stop walking, you move backwards. I have BiS weapons now on seven level 80’s. In order to get back to BiS, I would have an awful lot of walking to do. Sounds an awful lot like a treadmill to me.

If they really planned on introducing ascended gear at the release of the game, then we probably wouldn’t be having this mess of time-gated, inconsistent currencies and just plain poorly implemented style of item acquirement.

^This

If Ascended gear was planned for prior to launch, it would not have been so poorly implemented in November. And post-November is even worse.

1. We are told that Ascended is for agony resistance dungeons. FOTM being the first.
If that is the case, why aren’t accessories (earrings) obtained in FOTM? Does that make sense? Two ascended trinkets cannot be obtained by doing the dungeon that they were supposedly made for.

2. We can still not acquire all of the Ascended trinkets using the game’s normal mechanics. Exotics can be obtained via drops, karma vendors, crafting, WvW. But Ascended have a mishmash of acquisition methods none of which are fully aligned with the game’s normal approach.

If Ascended had been planned, the introduction of it would have aligned with the pre-established game mechanics. It was poorly introduced and continues to look like a kneejerk reaction to a supposed need by “gem store” customers.

I say “gem store” because that is the only way Arenanet makes money post-box sale. So this was a business decision, which means they believed that those spending real money in the cash shop wanted a new gear tier with higher stats.

So if you don’t like this, just don’t spend any money in the cash shop. I came back with the Living Story and focus on improving the open world. I play but don’t pay anymore.

I agree with much of what you say. However, I don’t agree that those who desire gear to work for are more likely to buy gems than people who have the cash, but not the time to “work” for something in a game. It may be that the tryhards are contributing to the system by “working” for gold which they exchange for gems, but if your desire is to work in a game, why spend money also — if the game is set up so that you don’t have to?

I think, rather, that catering to that group was more about high concurrency and less backlash on fan sites and in the media. Big numbers look better. “No end-game” articles and posts have had a negative effect on a lot of games.

A breakdown of mats needed to craft an ascended for any interested.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/crafting/Ascended-Crafting-Material-List/first#post2746832

This is a joke post, right?
The requirements are dangerously close to Legendaries which are supposed to be rare in acquisition. So is an Ascended weapon supposed to be rare? Something only the most “dedicated” players can acquire? Exotics do not have these type of requirements. Also, why can we not obtain any Ascended item using Karma? Why even make that an option at launch for all other gear tiers if you were never going to do it for Ascended? you know the real max stat gear you intended but could not get into the release window.

Also, when will you be increasing the mob difficulty to correspond with the increase stats? I mean unless the original mobs took into account the Ascended power level, then open world content will become even easier. Will it not?

All I can say at this point that we’ve been arguing amongst ourselves over months and multiple threads and issues, and ArenaNet have remained silent.

They’ve an agenda that we’ll not change. We waste our time and energy here; particular opinions are of no import.

Why the hell would anyone from Anet want to join in on any of the crap on these forums?

Though we don’t know who people are in an unofficial capacity…

Fire up the Hyperbowl ma, we’re going to town!

Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
