I cant create topic in Suggestion sub-forum, so please if moderator can move it, will be great. If no – hope all will appreciate the idea and it will arrive to creators of game.
Idea is to add a check-box in menu, under ground targeting type, which will provide auto limit of skill range.
For example, you need to cast fast a mass spell at a maximum range and with this option we will be able to move fast mouse forward and ground circle will move until limit of maximum range and stop there even if you move mouse farther.
circle will stay green at a maximum range and wont go farther in red and stopping you to cast saying that is too far.
Similar control option have skills like: Whirlwind Attack and Fiery Whirl
Its so nice to execute quick without any delay and easy to implement in this idea, just to add possibility to set from closer range to max.
Would be great for things like Blink as well. I actually thought that this would be the default behaviour when I started playing and was surprised that there wasn’t even an option for it.
If it’s made into an on/off option, sure. But there are reasons to keep it as it is for some people. I for one usually move with my skill ready to cast, following the target and when it goes green I cast it.
But I totally see a use for this system as well.
So if it’s an on/off feature, then sure, why not. It can’t hurt and it should be pretty easy to implement.
While I do support this idea, and would use it, it isn’t without its problems. The point is to allow you to make very quick AoE actions, but other than things like blink (which this would be awesome for) situations which require this are situations you don’t want to miss.
Imagine this. You are standing facing an incoming mob. You try to quickly drop some AoE on them, but they are out of range. Rather than get a red message you starting firing on some empty space in between you and them. As you are stuck in the skill animation, the group closes in. They get within range… and your AoE is now on cooldown.
I REALLY want this and I’m surprised it hasn’t been added yet. I’ve been playing smite for a few months and it works flawlessly in that game, but I can imagine it would be a bit more tricky in non planar space.

If you dont like them you can easily turn this option off. Idea is about to add this option with <Check Box>
And if you waiting for enemy that is running to you – you will know what is your maximum range and get closer or wait until its coming.
Today I was in Edge of Mist, for first time I’ve assist a siege of castle, I’m new in game, so when I was under gate, I do realized that this option is so much necessary…
Me with my Warrior – with Longbow, I’m doing blast on fire field and do Mass Might, using all synergy skills I can build up to 15-18 stacks of might, BUT when I was under gate, with 40++ teammates, I really realized that dont know where is my cursor!! how the hell I must cast that mass spell and do a combo on field when I dont see even my cursor nor the circle of area…
With this target system it would be much easier, to cast that spell anywhere but in area and to do that Might Blast.
Here comes and another idea, but not so brilliant like first one.
Add a checkbox with option to dim screen (or make all characters transparent) and highlight circle when cast ground targeting spell.
This option is special for situation like that.
And I’m more than sure that situation like that is met much frequent than only under gate, also on bridges or field when two world collide.
the best way to improve ground targeting is let us turn off other’s spell effects. Im really getting sick of losing my mouse cursor because theres 70 people on screen fighting at once and I cant figure out where to drop my AoEs.

There is no necessity to turn off all other spell, because you will dont know where is positive effects and negative. To dim all background, for 50-60%, except your character, loot, banner and circle of mass spell will be a much better improvement.
And also to add a check box for turning this on/off and a keybiding for turning this quicker.

I’m also in support of them adding a distance marker on targets. Would be nice to see exactly how far away a target is. Makes no sense why they don’t have this feature. Or grey out skills if your target is out of range. Nothing like blowing a big skill on a target that apparently was 1m out of range.
+1. Always wondered why this wasn’t an option.. Especially when roaming around the world with blink
(but as many others have said: it should be an “option” to toggle it on/off)
@Everyone: if you agree (or disagree for that matter): keep updating this thread and make it a “sticky”

There is a way to know that game developers have read or at least seen this topic with one eye?
Just to know – to keep rising it on forum or stay calm and wait ingame.
I think the only way to know, is for them to respond to the thread. So for now, people should just join the cause and keep the topic in the spotlight…

I remember suggesting this a little under half a year ago, but it was shot down because some people thought it took “skill” away from the game to have it in.
OP:
“So, I don’t know if this annoys anyone else, but for ground-targeted skills, if I’m trying to do something really fast, like a teleport or shadow step, it irritates me to no end if I accidentally click just barely outside the range and it completely cancels the skill, so I have to try again. Would it be possible to add in a game option to allow skills cast outside of their range to instead act as though they were simply cast at their max range?
Does anyone have any questions, comments, agreements or disagreements? Would love to hear it."
That would be amazing! It’s so annoying when i use blink skills. Most of the times I’m not able to take advantage of the full distance of the skills. Especially if I’m in the middle of the fray with particle effects all over my screen.
Not only for blink skill, Elementalist’s -Teleport, Thief’s – Shadows Step, Engineer – Jump Shot.
I think it would be a great improvement for all ground targeting skills, with the greatest option to turn it On or Off
If it was a graphics option that you could enable or disable, I’d be fine with it.
It would be a bad idea for anyone that uses the fast-cast indicator for cancelling skill casts, though. I.E. If I’m going to place necro marks on a zerg in WvW, I use the red zone indicator (and the “out of range” message) to cancel the mark casts if the people I was going to cast it on start running away out of range. Same with Temporal Curtaining people off of walls. If it automatically casted anyway when I let go of the key in the “out of range” zone, it would screw me over a lot.
I can see how this would appeal to some, though, so it would be a nice addition. Especially for anyone that uses jump/teleport skills but little to no target-area AoEs.
personally what I’d like, is an option for aoe to go to target enemy and not be mouse control.
In some instances pve, you’re targeting an enemy anyway. or a mob and what to hit the lot. maybe have a button that if you hold it, aoe goes to target and not mouse.
this would be excellent in some cases. .. add another button (if people want) for aoe to reach furthest possible spot and only move side to side with mouse.
We need quicker control over aoe, and surely it’s not that hard to add a button click for various aoe options?
Love this idea. One of the reasons I dislike using teleport skills like Blink and Thief SB #5 is because of the extra time it takes to position the cursor in the exact right place.
Some folks at Arenanet may feel having to find maximum range is part of the skill set required to play the game.
They did, after all, implement the Line-of-Sight mechanic since GW1, in which it was not at all needed. LoS does help with 180 directionals like melee cleaves and general skill use without targeting, but mostly, it seems to be an added measure needed to line-up and execute skills.
I don’t like it personally, I think it does little more than promote a figure skating dance which requires constant mouse turning. Similarly, I may not like having to find maximum range for a targeted skill in a hurry, but Arenanet may feel this is part of the challenge.

Don’t forget its a on/off option, anyone who dislike it just don’t use it. It will still be a challenge for you.
Anyway if this option will have enough support from players it could be implemented.
Just how was did with the other options, like: Disable Circle or Quick Cast on Target.
I’d vote for this as well, and a range target button change so that the buttons would reflect that you can’t cast that at the target you are looking at, at that time. This is so annoying being just out of range for the skill but the skill going off anyways.
