This may be a strange question but I figured I’d toss it out here anyways.

Since coming back to the game, I’ve leveled a Warrior, Ranger, Necro, and a Ele. I’ve also played a bunch on a Guard and a Mesmer in PvP so I think I somewhat have a base idea for most of the classes.

What I’m trying to come up with is a class that is universally effective in all aspects of the game (PvP, WvW, PvE, Raids). I’m not so much concerned about builds (as I’m aware they will change based upon the area of the game) as I am about simply playing one character. I don’t want to have to go back and do the story over or all the exploration I’ve already accomplished.

From what I’ve seen so far, it looks like the Warrior or perhaps, the Mesmer are best suited if I don’t want to do much more than change armor/build based upon whatever part of the game I’m at.

I had wished that I could make the D/D Ele work but outside of PvP, she just doesn’t measure up to what my other characters can do.

What do you all suggest?

Warrior by far and easy to pick up and master.

That’s pretty much what I figured I’d get as a response. The Mesmer, while fun in WvW, just doesn’t add up in PvE or Raiding like the Warrior can.

Revenant is a well rounded class. Someone on the forum’s said it’s the a jack of all trades but the master of none. It’s not the greatest at things but you can run DPS, support, healing and condi builds pretty well. I’m not sure it’s viable in raids as I haven’t done much raiding but they are a very nice asset in wvw and pve. Pvp will be rough but once you know the class it’s fairly good. Other than that I’d say warrior since they are almost always in demand and are very good in most aspects of the game

open world pve may be a bit meh on mesmer.. but “doesn’t add up in raiding”? I’ll have whatever you’re on please.

What I meant was with about the same quality gear, my Warrior feels a bit faster in general PvE. For raids, I’ve read that Warriors are typically picked over a Mesmer.

Both warrior and mesmer take key roles for the raid squad

Agreed, so many tools, toys and tricks that can be used. Great for control/Damage/Condi and bar breaking. That’s all you need really.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

Actually vanilla D/D Ele is very strong, even after the pvp nerfs. Tempest is even more so.

In sPvP, every class is currently part of the meta.
I don’t know much about WvW, but i think that guard/rev/war/necro/ele have very strong builds for zerging and gvg, mesmer/thief are very strong roamers (don’t really know the place of ranger/engi i suppose they can also be very strong roamers giving their strong 1v1 matchups in spvp)
For pve open world : everything works, fractals : every class is meta, raid : everything but necro and maybe rev.

So in the end, if you reaaally want a class to be part of the meta in every game mode you can choose between war/guard/thief/ele/mesmer. But keep in mind that this will most likely change with balance patches.

You know, you’re probably true and were it not for the fact that I completely suck as an engi, I’d probably pick one as my main character. I LOVED playing this class with all their amazing tricks and tools but I sucked so bad it was almost comical. Every day was almost a new exploration in how creatively I could get myself killed. LOL…

The nice thing was that in sPvP and WvW, almost nobody had a clue how to fight against an Engi. Sadly, I didn’t know how to fight as one so I still ended up losing all the time.

Someone needs to publish the book, GW2 Engineer for Dummies!

Warrior/Berserker has a place everywhere, yes. They’re Bruisers/Duelers in PvP, Frontliners in WvW and Boon+Bannerbots in Raids.

Mesmer/Chronomancer also has a place everywhere. They’re insane point-holders/Duelers in PvP, Portal/Stealth Bots in WvW and Tanks/Boonbots in Raids.

Aside that, Thief/Daredevil is +1/Assassins in pvp, Roamers in WvW and High-level DPS in Raids.

Guardian/Dragonhunter is a Pointholder/Trapper in pvp, Zerg Frontliner in WvW and High DPS in Raids.

Elementalist/Tempest is the primary Supporter of a pvp team, Zerg Healer Midliner in WvW and High DPS in Raids.

Most professions have at least 1 working build in every game mode. Revenant/Herald has kinda fallen behind in PvP and PvE but supposedly still going strong in WvW, and Necromancer/Reaper isn’t very used in Raids but sees a lot of favor with High-end Fractals, while still having a strong presence in PvP and WvW. Engineer/Scrapper as has been stated are still extremely powerful in PvP and can work well in WvW and PvE (Though as Base Engi in PvE).

I’d suggest looking up sites such as Metabattle and qT forums to read up on current meta, helps with getting an understanding of what works right now.

Warrior – Wardancer | Guardian – Lorekeeper | Revenant – Vindicator |
Thief – Duelist | Ranger – Strider | Engineer – Technician |
Elementalist – Spellweaver | Necromancer – Warlock | Mesmer – Trickster |

@ TheSwede.9512,

That’s actually a pretty impressive assessment! I think the problem I have with GW2 is that I can find something about almost every class that I really enjoy and obviously, I play some better than others. The statement, “play what you enjoy” is rough for me as I simply don’t have time to play them all.

lol

Follow this advice and you’ll be rerolling your Rev as fast that you’ll think that everytning was just a bad dream.

Revenant is a very vulnerable class (weak access to condition cleansing, easily hardcounterd by crowd control effects…) with a subpar condition build and a mediocre power build which requieres high skill to even work. You will find yourself rejected in PvE raids and demolished in PvP and roaming; zergling in WvW can work as long as you have a bunch of Guardians at hand to babysit you. It lacks any skill customization, has no access to racial skills and two single legends has underwater skills. Was rushed for the expansion, released with astronomic damage numbers to cloak the large list of bugs (which some of them are still present) and after a year and half of nerfs is currently in a pit of mud.

Enjoy.
