Didn’t we have this same discussion last year? That GW2 “needed” an expansion or the game as we know it would die a horrible death? I am sure I remember reading that many people were absolutely convinced that an expansion was in the works, and to be release in 2014. But here we are, a year later and the game is doing fine.
But if there is no expansion next year? Nothing will really change. Of course LS will continue to grow and evolve, but people will still come on here and say that an expansion NEEDS to happen or the game will crash and burn. They will still talk about how GW1 had several expansion out by this time, and Anet needs to get on the ball already. Others will still claim that other MMOs follow the expansion model and are doing great, and if Anet wants to be competetive in the genre an expansion needs to be happen, etc. etc. etc.
Did you used to post about Archeage? lol
Umm … no. Where’d you get that from?
Expanssions do the 1 thing ANet said they did not want to do… Split the player base.
if they make an expanssion the playerbase will be separated b2ing expanssion owners and none. This gap will reduce player base in both camps and creates a toxic enviroment, as well as now they have to do LS for both.
Also this same handfull of people (minority) that are crying there is nothing to do now, will finish the expanssion in a month and start to whine again that they have nothing to do and they neeeeeed another expanssion.
Living story can and has delivered everything an expanssion does (weapons, armor, land, etc) and has done it in a well paced manner allowing the playerbase to stay mostly together, and providing a sence of progression.
I do however would like more substancial and regular updates even if I have to wait for 1 a month b2ing updates.
Careful. You’re going to hurt yourself stretching that much. :p
I really don’t think the 2 small and 1 large maps count as an expansions worth of real estate. Also, the weapons and skills released are minimal at best. We also don’t have a new race yet.
In essence Living Story has proven it can releases an expansions worth of content but definitely not at an equivalent rate (compared to other games including GW1).

When was the last time ANet came out and said what’s in the works months, or years before it’s ( the content ) ready for release?
The last time the ‘expansion’ was addressed was January 14th, 2014. Colin said there were still no plans for an ‘expansion’ or words to that effect.
As of May 14th 2013, there are no current plans for an expansion, but the idea has not been ruled out. Further, on January 14th, 2014, Colin Johanson repeated that the company had not decided whether to release an expansion or freely integrate new skills, traits, and similar content into the game.

As far as upcoming content discussions? They have a front page for it.

Last update was in September this year. Last actual discussion about unreleased content was this month about the Living Story returning on January 9th.

Oh course, there are all those trailers, wallpapers, and live feed shows showing and discussing stuff before it’s released. . . .
Edit: And the upcoming wiki page discusses items and events months, and in some cases, years before release. Can link that too if you’d like?

Then it dose not come out but you will be dam sure ppl will be threatening to “hold there breath” or “slam there head agents a wall” until it dose much like a kid would to when they do not get there way lol.

I actaully agree with him because expansion also means new players have to pay much more so it’s less likely for them to get new players.
I dont’ know what’s GW2 hold in the future. I’m hoping it’s more dungeon to come, meaning GvG, or raid, some addition of new skills/ability. Obviously it’s too much to ask for everything. But I hope it’s more than just instanced single player story.
Anet are at least starting CDI on GvG. So at least they are thinking about it, if not possibly working on it.
Here’s the things the community has been asking for:
- More pvp game modes;
- More professions;
- More weapon skills unlocked per profession;
- GvG;
- Guild Halls/ Housing;
- More WvW features and depth;
- More explorable maps;
- More challenging content;
Mounts (=divisive, but requested nonetheless);- Raids;
- More dungeons;
- Precursor scavenger hunting and crafting;
- Expanded story;
None of these things require an expansion a’la GW1 or WoW.
With the profit model they have working well, any/all of the above could be done via DL expansions. Example: EvE Online, FFXIV, etc.
If the only argument for a box expansion is the marketing hype, that’s a poor excuse. Marketing can be just as good if the “named” expansion is announced to those “reputable” gaming sites in a press release. The only thing hurting Anet in this regard is their refusal to announce anything on the fear of player whining.
I don’t see a box expansion coming but I do see them expanding the game just as they have been. It won’t be in one huge DL but more likely a few sizable ones that start to fill out more of the game and world over 2015.
Peace.
i wont leave this game because they dont have a expansion …..
i will leave because they put pve befor everything else
but i am patiently waiting for a new game-
and the second there is a better wvw experience ill be out of here -
i expected to see more wvw/pvp updates by now
but all we get is pve content .. lots and lots of boring pve
i’ve always contested that one of the awesome things about this game is if I get bored with it i can give it a break and it’s not like it has a sub so it’s cool. this is the first time since it came out that i have played way less than i used to. i used to do my dailies for the laurels. i would be online doing a daily and someone would rope me into a fractal or something. now, i just login, get my login in reward and i am done. i play a pvp match here and there, but for all intents and purposes, i have done everything there is to do. I did so because gw2 is an amazing game but when you’re bored, why play as much?

I think my post apples here. If you not gone by now because of no expansion over the last 2 years then one more year not going to make you go alone because there is not expansion.
Any way the ideal of an expansion seems like a bad ideal unless you can keep these 2 week updates and an expansion going because the reaction of down time from the 2 week update has been so great that the very ideal of taking 2 month to 6 months to maybe a year (most mmorpgs do take a year to years to put things out at this point in there mmorpg life) is crazy.
The only people affected by a lack of an “expansion” are those who blow through the new content as quickly as they can. But, traditionally those folks are like locusts and as soon as they’ve consumed all the new content they move on to another game.
I’m not going coach anybody about their play style. However, to those who play at a relatively steady rate, all the new content produced this year is plenty. And to those who play at a casual or slower rate, even overwhelming.
I’m still playing catch up by leveling 5 toons to 70 so I can unlock new content I haven’t gotten to yet. But I also take advantage of everything the game has to offer. Crafting, PvP, WvW, LS, Dailies, Weeklies & Monthlies.
well….what will you guys do if the expansion doesnt come in 2015?
We’ll keep coming here and complaining that things need to change, while getting banned from the forums in the process.
Other people will leave, but there will always be a population here, regardless of what they don’t do.
I don’t forsee any real competition coming out to deliver the same kind of gameplay experience, so we’re all kinda screwed right now. FFXIV and WoW are GREAT monthly sub alternatives, but they don’t offer ‘as engaging gameplay’. The other F2P games are too cheap and poor quality to even bother with and none of the “next-gen MMOs” are really looking all that interesting. Even this “Camelot Unchained” and its reference to WAR…have you SEEN the character models for that game? Just terrible.
No, i think GW2 will become “that other MMO” for most, who move on to other games and always return back to GW2, because there is a nostalgia to the game play thats always nice to have around. We got what we paid for.
“but i am patiently waiting for a new game-

This. It all hinges on WvW. If someone can build a better experience for the same price, then i’m O-U-T.

i understand what u r saying but how else do u shake these updated out of anet after all this time.i am burnt out on the living story lol
Then don’t do the LS. The LS is an expansion update its pure content it dose not changes how the game is played it just simply adds on to the current game. If your truly burnt out on LS i am not sure how MORE content will help you.
If they don’t release an expansion then they need to start focusing the living world on more extensive changes and updates.
Two years is a long time for any online game to go without significant additions to classes, mechanics, items, skills, etc etc etc.
Look at rift, they’ve been going what… 4 years? In 4 years they’ve added 8 new souls, 2 entire continents, level cap increases, huge new lore and story updates, etc.
There’s really no excuse for ANet to not be doing these things besides simple unwillingness to.

They don’t talk about anything unless it’s starting tomorrow, next week, completely obvious it’s coming ( Halloween ), or setting a specific date to when something we know’s coming ( LS ).
The Wiki page is a compilation of all the crap that’s ANet’s responded to in interviews and in some cases, here. Like everything else, they’re not going to give out a date or even a rough date on when it’s released or, even if it’s even being worked on.
My point is, if there’s an expansion they’ll deny it/remain silent up until the last possible minute like everything else so they don’t upset people or set weird expectations. Just because you have the “proof” they’re not working on an expansion with old interviews, means very little given their closed-lip policy.
Like Vayne said, you have to read between the lines with ANet.

i dont think u get that i am not really asking for a expansion,
so much for as real content !
my problem is just through living story- does not provide many wvw/pvp class improvement up dates
we just see soooooo much pve that comes and goes
(edited by caveman.5840)
The kicker part is there have been significant additions to classes, mechanics, items, skill, etc. Seems every patch there’s some modification to something.
The class I play today, with certain weapons, is nothing like the one I played in open beta. Heck, it’s not even the same after some chances just a few months ago.
But here’s to hoping that Rytlock is a ritualist next year. Blind? Dealing with spirits? Portals to a new land?
I’ll try the new class.
i think most of us know we dont need a expansion to see these things added …. but anet focus seems to be on pve

I’d agree with you except the most recent patch included a revamp of the PvP ladder system. Also there have been references to more changes coming so I think they are addressing things but in a measured way. Certainly they should have sooner.
However I will point out that PvP, since there is no subscription, does not pay the bills for Anet. PvE and in turn the TP and the gem store does. That doesn’t make PvP “worse” but it does ride on the coat tails of PvE which powers Anet’s business model.
Peace.

They are not made for that it dose not sound like you want content updates you want more on the lines of a feature update. Though take a long time i think we get 2 to 1 a year.

How about I read what they said instead? Again, no plans for an expansion. This idea that keeping quiet, and not promoting a product, flies in the face of everything any MMO company has ever done.
Including this one.
It’s like saying they think promoting their own product is poison and would lead to decreased hype, discussion, and word-of-mouth. Which, as anyone in business knows, is a whole lot of nonsense.
But, hey, if repeatedly citing, from the source, developers coming here and saying, “Nope,” doesn’t convince you or the others, far be it from me to spin my wheels.
You keep looking to that crystal ball, the tea leaves, read ‘between the lines’, and hope no actually means yes or maybe or it’s a secret. Shhh. Ta da! Miracle expansion to be released next month!
Right.
I guess a conspiracy theory is always more fun than reality, but let me not point that out either.

yes pvp did just get that up date
pvp players like the skins/other junk in the gem store as much as other players
so it does not really matter if u r a pvp/wvw/pve player when it comes to the gem store

Since when do companies promote an expansion a YEAR before releasing it?
While I personally don’t think an expansion would come soon, there is a high chance they will announce it at 2015 and hype it up for 6 months, as in a release at the end of 2015 or 2016.

How many people would come here and QQ about a potential expansion? I mean, you’re doing a good job about it right now and this is just a speculation thread. There’d be tons of people quoting the same sources you are kittening they have to pay another 50, or 60 dollars for new content and feel “betrayed” because it was all suppose to be released as free updates through LS or other non-traditional means.
Keeping quiet about it is a good move in my opinion. But I suppose like you said, you’ll have one Hell of an “I told you so” thread next year.

Excuse me, Sir. I am not crying about whether there will or will not be an expansion. I’m pointing out that developers have stated either A. There aren’t any plans for one or B. There aren’t any plans for one.
The last one said so the beginning of this year.
Your, and others, counter-argument is this: Don’t believe them. They’re probably working on it, but won’t tell us because people will cry.
And I say that lacks any form of common sense. A business that’s building a product, but doesn’t want to promote said product, is a business that goes out of business.
And, finally, it flies in the face of everything ANet has done so far. With everything coming down the pipe, they’ve promoted it. With trailers, with live feed discussions, with announcements, with twitter, with blogs, with discussions on these boards.
So, to believe they’re keeping their projects mums, makes no sense at all. Especially since they’ve said repeatedly there are no current plans for one.
This year.
And on that note, I said I would not say “I told you so” at any point. Someone else made that claim earlier.
This is a discussion board. Not a chest thumping contest. I don’t roll like that.

That’s totally false. GW2 isn’t depserate or even close to be in a bad situation. It still generates millions of dollars every year.
Yes, it would be great with an expansion and I would love it however believing that Anet are in a desperate situation is nothing but giving youself a false hope of them forced to release it NOW. Because hey.. they are not forced and the game is running better than almost every single title in the western MMO market despite its’ lackluster performence according to many.
I find it odd that they call the LW content “their focus” but the teams on it are so small. If it was really their focus then they would have larger teams making each update and we would get them every two weeks. I would’ve found it easier to stomach not getting them every two weeks if we were given some clarification of what is coming that is really the focus. The lack of communication has just led me to play less because why would I invest the bulk of my gaming time in a game whose direction is murky at best. Couple that with the changes they keep adding that are partly what people asked for and then partly nothing remotely resembling anything a portion of the playerbase wants and it doesn’t have me very excited or optimistic about the future.

Nailed it….
It really is a lose/lose situation sometimes. People agreed to give developers more time to work on content. But, when no new content came out after two weeks, the boards blew up with complaints.
So they release new, but shorter content to give players carrots to chase.
And those players blew threw it, complained about the length, cliffhangers, and then said the bell choir was too hard. Sometimes, you just can’t win.
Still, if those promotional pictures of Rytlock are any indication, we might be in for a surprise.
And see there? A promotion, months in advanced, about content we have no idea about. Speculation ran rampant about it. Is it Canthan? Ritualists? Something else?
Again, the evidence flies in the face of any speculation.

To days date December 23, 2014So much time lost they need something and they need it bad, the only thing holding the game up right now is shinny objects in the black lion trading post and the wallet warriors who buy them.
Calculators have a great performance track record too…. but i don’t find entertainment in one….. Just because it runs great doesn’t mean it is a good quality…. And while yes one can argue that it is Guild wars greatest achievement….It would first have to be true…. Guild wars 2 is the only game i have had to stop playing the campaign (living story) because it was so buggy i couldn’t play……..So the argument isn’t correct or sound. Only game i have found more buggy then Guild wars 2 living story is Assassins creed…. Your right they don’t have to add anything, but that doesn’t mean the world has to play it….. the longer they wait the more people play other things….. so i’ll take the hint and stop playing till they decide to do something, i mean its free right so i can just walk away….. no strings attached…..Right? But to shed a little light and to throw you a bone…. You are completely right… I mean how can a game not be smooth when its hardest action it has to compute consistently: is flame ram smash door?
Again, the evidence flies in the face of any speculation.
so much confusion because anet does not share plans lol,
people are just left siting on the edge of there seats …. eyes roll canthan = expansion
ritualists =idk who cares

mmmm i can not say the game is running great … there has been a lot of lag recently !
… there is a huge forum in account- teck- support about it
Running great as a business.
I’ll try the new class.
balance changes and slight adjustements that shift meta builds =/= significant content updates
Since when do companies promote an expansion a YEAR before releasing it?
While I personally don’t think an expansion would come soon, there is a high chance they will announce it at 2015 and hype it up for 6 months, as in a release at the end of 2015 or 2016.
WoW: Burning Crusade: Announced Oct 2005, released January 2007.
Wrath of the Lich King: Announced August 2007, released November 2008
Cataclysm: Announced August 2009, released December 2010
Mists of Pandaria: Announced October 2011, released September 2012 (so, not quite a year)
Warlords of Draenor: Announced November 2013, released November 2014
I’d say there’s some pretty significant precedent for announcing an expansion a year in advance.
Edit: I personally don’t care if there’s an expansion or not, I’m just pointing out that it’s not unheard of to promote for that length of time.

But those changes included adds and changes to the environment and content.
The Lion’s Arch events? The Nightmare Tower leveled the area. Then there’s Dry Top. The Silverwastes. South Sun Cove. The Cliffs with the sky crystals. Those off the top of my head.
Seems like splitting hairs over the massive amounts of change with the trait system, builds, runes, etc. given the significant amount of patches and updates since the game began.

They could release a Cantha campaign and an Elona campaign tomorrow, with new professions, weapons, skills and all that good stuff, but until they ditch that odious trait system redesign — bah, humbug.
Doesn’t matter how well-prepared and delicious anything else on the menu may be, that dead skunk soufflé they insist on serving everyone is stinking up the dining room and ruining the dinner party.
So at least they are thinking about it, if not possibly working on it.
what anet doesnt want is a repetitive grind fest, where every expansion means grinding for new gear mindlessly. lol an expansion has nothing to do with that, it all depends on how anet does it. u guys dont understand marketing nor gaming.

wrong, an expansion is much more than that. sorry to burst ur bubble.

So Anet purposely dont’ make new dungeons, GvG, new skills because that mean people’ll have to grind gear?
I don’t understand it.
I don’t mind doing a dungeon more than 10 times. Hack I probably did cof path 1 1000 times. Some of the other dungeon path I probalby done it more than 50 times. The longer “less rewarding” ones I probably did it 10 times.
I think your assumption is no one like doing content and they just play video games to get better gear to sit in town and look pretty.
Obviously progression is a big reason I play mmorpg, so I do want to get rewarded. And I don’t think you understand why people even grind gear in other mmorpg. They grind gear to do new content. Not to look pretty, at least that is for me.
The best reward for any mmorpg have always been content. The only reason I’m grinding the same dungeon 10-20 times is because I get the gear to challenge the next boss.
Guild wars 2 dont’ make you grind gear to do the content. But that don’t mean I don’t want new interesting boss to challenge.

well….what will you guys do if the expansion doesnt come in 2015? i am sure that arenanet realized by now that they NEED an expansion in order for the game to progress in a grand scale. not only that, but the constant pressure being put on them by players, credible websites, popular sites, etc.
Don’t worry it won’t. I’d love for one too. I wouldn’t buy it but it would be interesting to see sales figures on an earning report to actually see how many people still bother with the game.

What are you doing ?
You dont time to waste !
You have to lvl up the ‘’npc folloowers’’ from your Garrison to be in highest item lvl , in order to get the best PvE gear , without even particiapating yourself in those REAL Mythic Raids !
I already find myself logging in, checking the BLTP, and then sort of shuffling my inventory until I log off. If the market hasn’t moved, my guild isn’t hosting an event, or there’s nothing going on in WvW, I’ve got nothing to do.
Another year of that? I’m going to be leaving. I suspect it will be like last year, where they release some piddly crap and a hyped up balance and ‘feature’ patch that I come back to check out. Will next year’s ‘feature pack’ have enough to make me check it out again after this year’s Massive Shrug? That’s the question. The path of least resistance is what’s holding me here for now.
My forum posting has gone up like 500% in the last two weeks because I’m so kitten bored in-game.
Exactly the problem. People are used to a hype-release cycle for casuals and gear grinds for hardcore. GW2 is deliberately a different type of game. We’ve gotten quite a bit – not an expansion’s worth, but close – but since we haven’t had the expansion hype people aren’t feeling as excited about it.
No, that’s not because of their lack of PR or hypemachine, it’s because that is recycled. Silverwastes isn’t new, it is WvW ideas with AI mobs sprinkled around. As a player that actually played the whole game instead of sticking to a niche, I’m not excited about that because it isn’t exciting, not because Neoseeker didn’t write an article about it. A couple of new enemy models, 2 hours worth of talking heads, and a constantly reworked daily system isn’t ‘close to’ an expansion.
You’re right, GW2 IS a different type of game – one that releases content more slowly than some F2P competitors, despite the same focus on microtransactions. I’m bored because I’m bored, not because they didn’t add grind. They are very good at adding grind (ascended, mawdrey, legendaries), but if I finally do grind out that legendary, it will be the same legendary I saw some dude wearing in 2013. And that will be BORING.
Ok, we will assume that GW2 isn’t even good enough to comepte vs other F2P titles. Now ask yourself, why in the world would Anet bother do anything if they get more profit than almost every single western MMO title? the game has a really healthy population compared to most other MMOs. They are gaining millions of dollars every year. And the industry has almost no compitition. All the games that have been released during the last years, have been flops more or less. Final Fantasy is a good title but again it is focused on gear/stat progression and therefore would have quite the different crowd.
It is not only GW2 being not so statisfying. The MMO market in genereal is empty more or less and companies are struggling to keep their titles alive.
you dont know what ur saying.
Yeah he made a paragraph of some whacked out comments. What I heard was a lot of other successful MMOs are doing as well but there’s not really any citations or reference with that. Hell yesterday I was shocked when I had a friend say he was playing Lord of the Rings again. I was like wow didn’t know that game still existed. Yeah he says got a few expansions out even. I know Landmark is doing fairly well as a beta. There’s of course the elephant wow. League and other games out there. Not to mention all the SoE games that are still profitable and played. I’m going to guess that little AN that seems to p off more players each patch has less then most other games. Only reason it’s not seen is because mega servers make it look like a lot more people then it really is.

Hahaha that’s actually what I was doing while reading this thread. Got all the followers out doing stuff and my group is waiting in BG que atm.
Only reason it’s not seen is because mega servers make it look like a lot more people then it really is.
And Wow coppied that system too :P
Ashran (the equivillent of WvW , but only a straight line push) its not based on server vs server but it has the Megaserver mechanic like Eotm where it pulls players from allover servers .
The Russians server , where for straight 8 years played on their own league , now they are merged with theEu servers :P
(My hate for the ppl form MMO Champion and PvE hardcores players , is shown vividly ? :P)

The real question is what if one DOES come in 2015 because there is no expectation that we should be getting one.
