WvW no longer required for world completion
I wish that the people who are complaining that WvW has been hurt by this change would answer the people who have to go into WvW to do map completion and report how often they have been hassled by WvW players, up to and including verbal abuse and being “ganked” repeatedly. As I’ve said elsewhere, I’m all for this change. WvW is NOT, despite some claims to the contrary, actually a physical part of Tyria; as another poster pointed out earlier, it’s actually a region of the Mists, and therefore should never have been included in map completion requirements in the first place.
I have never been hassled as I never asked for anything. I just ran alone or with the zerg. I have been killed 3 times and well that’s part of the game, you can’t expect to run around solo and not being killed.
The problem with WvW being part of map completion is multifold:
1) It’s in the Mists. This is established lore. Thus, it is not Tyria and should not count to Tyrian map completion, in the same way that Heart of the Mists and sPvP maps do not count. It’s a little mind-boggling why ANet considered it part of Tyria in the first place.
2) For some reason until this point, WvW was required map completion, but dungeons have never been. This is counterintuitive.
3) Getting WvW map completion for people who do not enjoy playing WvW is not a challenge, but a time sink — wait a week for the rotation to change, and pray that certain points are open when the rotation occurs. If not, wait another week. Not every player enjoys WvW, and should not be expected to. My fiancee and I both despise WvW, so we have both employed the “Wait a week” strategy.
4) Prior to the current setup, when server changes were free and instantaneous, you could complete WvW map completion in a very short time period (maybe an hour) by swapping rapidly between servers. This benefited older players and punished new players who can’t take advantage of rapid server changes.
5) For everybody getting kitten about this reducing the amount of players entering WvW — this has never hurt sPvP. Both have been around long enough that curious people will investigate, as they are talked about frequently in guilds and map chat.

Then, sir, you are a very lucky man, in both your server and opposing servers (presuming you ate like the rest of the people that like this change because they don’t like WvW). I already got killed 4 times within the 2 hours it took me to finish the red borderland yesterday…
Map completion in WvW enforced in me the fact that there are jerks out there who revel in the fact that they can ruin the fun of others, and apparently lack any form of compassion. Which is the reason why I hate PvP in general.

It’s Mam and yes, I have always been on nice servers but when I don’t tell them that I’m in because of map completion they have no reason to harass me anyway.
Even the opponents have been nice back in the day; I did map completion in 2 phases – I hated pvp so the first time around I did it to have 100% map completion for the map completion, so I left it after having been killed that 3 times, the second time around I wanted the gift and that was when I mostly stopped running alone but joined groups and that was when I got hooked.
Wvw is a pvp map after all, people are there to “kill” each other, that’s the concept of it. But still a lot of people, myself included, let low levels pass unless they cause trouble – I usually down them and then go away but some don’t seem to get my point anyway.
I get your “mindset” as I thought like that myself but nowadays I think that people who aren’t into wvw don’t know anything about their class and with that of the game – which isn’t neccessarily true, I know there are exceptions. But usually it’s the other way around; those who are good in wvw are good in every other aspect of the game, those who are good in pve are mostly rather decent in wvw/pvp. No offense, just to say what I think. And I do wonder what direction anet wants for this game as making everything ridiculously easy (or buyable with gold) hurts the game in the long run, but that’s just my opinion – I don’t really care whether or not wvw maps are required for world map completion.
Still think my idea was better where you could do 4 WvW maps for world completion and they replace a map on the actual map for each one so WvW’ers get less PVE to suffer and PVE’rs don’t get forced into WvW but can if they want.
I think it is a good change gameplayvise, world completion is more of an PvE thing, and if you are a player with a server that is just bad in WvW it is a plain pain to do the WvW map.
I already did my worldcompletion so I am not really affected by the change unless I decide to do so again, but I belive this to be a smart change from a mechanical standpoint.
…and being “ganked” repeatedly…
Just for the record: you have not been ganked. You have been killed. How often did you die during PvE-Map completion or doing PvE-events in general?
Think of WvW as “PvE finally having a decent AI”. Because that’s what it is: the challenging game mode.
I’ve managed it 8 times – it isn’t hard if you are intelligent about it.
A number of people wait until they have finished all of the PvE maps before venturing into WvW to complete those and then get upset that they can’t do them all in one day. When I near people raging in map chat about it this usually the case.
I have to admit that the first time I did map completion I didn’t realise that the WvW maps were included until I had completed all of the PvE ones. This lead me into visiting WvW for the first time and thanks to that I am no longer a stranger to WvW.
With that character I merely created an Alt to level while completing the WvW on the first.
Had map completion not been part of WvW then I would never had reason to discover WvW so personally I thank ANet that WvW was part of map completion and I lament for the future of WvW which will loose recruits following this change.
For the other 7 characters I followed a simple method. Occasionally when playing those characters I would check the WvW maps. If something was available that I didn’t have I would pop in and grab it. It wasn’t hard and didn’t take long and I found the best time (although by no means essential) was during the night.
I’ve managed it 8 times – it isn’t hard if you are intelligent about it.
It’s not hard at all, it’s just tedious as people are killing you while it’s 1000% clear you are not there to WvW but to map.

And if you’re communing at a SP, and you’re killed, you’ve been ganked. If you’re one step away from a Vista and somebody attacks you, you’ve been ganked. If you’re halfway killing a foe required for a SP and somebody kills you, you’ve been ganked.
And you chalk that up to the cost of getting map complete when on your own. Find some like minded map questers and party up. Also remember map chat is really map chat, the other two servers see it as well, use team for server wide.

No, In WvW Map Chat is only seen by people on the same server as you.
It is only emotes that are seen by everyone, and then only if they are close enough.

Good luck finding people that are willing to leave defending a certain tower, or camp or whatever so I can commune at a sp…. Especially if your side is already undermanned.
And since when is map chat readable by the other two sides?
My mistake then. I was told early on to always use team chat.

And if you’re doing map completion and get killed by a veteran while trying to get a skill point near Royal Forum you’re being ganked as well? What is the difference between dying from mobs and dying from AI? Is it SERIOUSLY because it is another human being?
This is no game with free-for-all open world pvp, luckily. There are other players on your side, fighting together with you, if you dare to accept their aid. They may need your’s as well. Couldn’t it also be a great way of gaming to rely on each others support while venturing in dangerous areas?

The difference between being killed by AI and being killed by a person is intent. Being killed by a person who sees you trying to do a vista or get a skill point is more personal as it should be fairly obvious you are a PvE person getting map completion and instead of letting you do that and go on your way, they deliberately go out of their way to stop you.
The veteran is just a mindless thing following its programing. The person made a decision to stop me from getting the skill point or vista.
As to getting help from my side to do a skill point or a vista? It never occurred to me to bother them with such trivial requests. While I could join the zerg, usually I’m going somewhere specific, such as a particular poi in a fort that’s open, and that’s not where they are going. Usually they are looking for a fight (and I’m not) or a contested fort (that I might not need).
ANet may give it to you.

Most people in WvW will ignore you if they realise that your sole purpose is map completion, however you get anti-social people everywhere.
Ever been in PvE communing with a SP (or various) other things when someone runs past trailing a string of mobs only for them to stop and attack you instead?
In PvE I once saw someone standing in a “safe” spot obviously afk. Someone playing a thief had also spotted this person – they then ran in circles picking up mobs, ran over to the afker and stealthed. The mobs then started attacking the afker. When I ran over and killed the mobs and rezzed the downed person to stop them from dying I got offensive whispers from the person playing the thief.
I’ve never been ignored in WvW, when running to a spot, at a spot, in tonic form so I couldn’t fight back or when I sat on the ground and did nothing as they approached. But I guess it’s always possible.
I’ve had them kill me at the southernmost skill point before I could get it and then hang around by the supply camp nearby so their nameplates were with the red NPC name plates and wait for me to come back so they could kill me again.

I think you have been unlucky.
Some people play to challenge themselves and some people play to cause others grief.
I’ve had it go the other way at the southern borderlands skill point – I was once fighting the spider woman when someone from another server approached. I prepared to break off and run but they also attacked her and when she was dead we went our separate ways.

Considering the complaints about being killed (on this thread and other older, threads) and the joy expressed by so many PvE people with this announcement, I would say that my experience is typical. People claiming that WvW players ignore PvErs are thinking that because they themselves are nice enough to do so, so they think this is common behavior.
It’s not.
(You should have read the thread when the Obsidian sanctum was needed for a PvE achievement and how so many WvW people camped that jumping puzzle just to kill the PvE people trying to do it for their achieve. So many angry posts by PvE people and so many posts by WvW people saying, “suck it up” or making remarks about drinking PvE tears).

So does this mean we can be devoid of dungeons now to complete a legendary?
I mean it’s only fair if PvE’ers don’t have to enter WvW to finish something required for a legendary; WvW’ers should be abstained from having to enter dungeons
So does this mean we can be devoid of dungeons now to complete a legendary?
Yes, that’s what sPvP reward tracks are for.

Then again, that option’s been in the game for a long time. One wonders why WvW people complaining about dungeons haven’t used this before. I guess focusing solely on 1 aspect of the game has its drawbacks.

Oh actually I guess it worked for the PvE whiners… Next Anets gonna make it so you get yak walking in SW.

Did it never occur to you that this might have something to do with the new Borderlands maps? That map will obviously be different and not of the same difficulty as the previous maps. When it goes into rotation with the old map, then people would either have to do both the old and new maps (almost twice as much work) or wait longer for one map to get out of rotation so they can access the map they need.
The difficulty level is not going to be the same and imo, that’s why ANet took WvW out of world completion.
ANet may give it to you.
I think this whole mindset that all people should be helping with WvW needs to go.
People who don’t want to WvW are not necessarily bad people.
People who only PvE are not necessarily ruining your fun.
So don’t get yourself all worked up over the morality, courage and justice of these players.
If WvW is understaffed, is PvE really to blame? If it is, wouldn’t that imply PvE is better than WvW (to more people)? If WvW is not understaffed, then why care what the PvE players are doing?
Want to recruit more people into the WvW cause? Do it positively. Server bonuses for WvW success is one way of positive advertising, though it’s very hidden.
Exploration was an example of negative advertising. Many dreaded that last section of their world completion. Guilting “carebears” is another example of negative advertising.
The AI can be beat by watching the pattern and then working around it. The SP in the Malchor’s Leap cavern with the Eye is a prime example. Once you figure out the pattern getting in and out solo is easy. There are no patterns to follow in WvW, a human player is not going to follow a script so there is no “easy button”. You cannot go to a Dulfy’s to find a walkthrough on how beat an enemy player. Therefore it takes more effort to beat a real player then it does an AI script. People just do not want to put out the effort, it is easier to complain about it until it is changed.

Or maybe its not about difficulty and some of us just hate PvP because it isn’t enjoyable for us.
I’m here to work with other players, not kill them.

Yeah of course, very challenging when you’re trying to get points no zerg is interested in so you have to go at them solo and proceed to get eaten by the usual roaming pack of thieves.
So much skill with a scumbag class that can burst from stealth and doesn’t get revealed if you block backstab, and if you happen to get the upper hand during the fact they just reset and come back again while your cooldowns are down.
as a semi raid build/tank necro I sometimes like to tease thieves, hard to kill the little blighters but i’ll be buggered if they gonna kill me either

Tbh: if it was just this I wouldn’t care, but it’s not.
First: you needed 500 badges of honor the only way to them was by killing other players (no champ drops, no chests after taking stuff) or working your tail off everyday in a JP that wouldn’t let you camp it.(not PvP, but they made you work for your solution)
Second: Achievement chests- suddenly if I have never set foot in wvw but I’ve been active every where else I’ll get enough badges for the wvw gift (effectively removing any incentive to participate in wvw)
3rd/4th: I’m a little foggy on what came first because i was away from the game at the time: introduce WvW masteries so wvw players can continue to progress in a meaningful way(by itself a good thing), then add a map to WvW that allows people to speed level through the “meaningful” progress with out actually having to kill anyone or do anything remotely useful for their server.
5th: being able to buy through the “meaningful” progress (liquid xp) (now people don’t even have to pretend to participate)
So if I hadn’t watched one of the unique aspects of the game get beat on by PvE players whining then I might not care about this change.
As it stands now (or will after this goes live), if you want a legendary you don’t have to try for it, you can just auto walk your way into a shiny.

I for one am glad that the WvW requirement is going away. I do not have world completion on any character due to the WvW req – I do not like PvP in any game I play (and yes, I have tried both PvP and WvW in GW2). And I’ve had a string of bad luck where my server keeps getting the same color’s all the time.
I also have issue’s with hand-to-eye co-ordination & reflex’s, which makes things like dodging & such somewhat troublesome… so fighting other players can be quite difficult for me. I have tried joining zerg’s when I have tried, but still was not fun, enjoyable or went well. Also getting PM’ed abuse cause I suck didn’t help matters either.
I would hope that they make the World Completion an either/or situation – where you can get the World Complete & prize by either getting world complete in WvW zones or in PvE.
This way someone who just want’s to WvW but also wants a Legendary weapon can still do so without having to map the whole PvE world (the only exception would be needing to get the waypoints near the dungeon’s, so as to do the dungeons for tokens to buy the relevant gift), while also enabling PvE’ers who don’t want to face PvP the ability to do the same and ignore WvW entirely.

Sorry to hear you’ve had bad experiences with other people in wvw, yes it can be very fast paced and difficult to keep up even in a zerg, however other jobs are also very important like scouting or defending, keeping siege engines active so they don’t despawn, hells you could even get on a cannon or an arrow cart for a laugh

Surely the incentive to participate in WvW should be the desire to actually participate in WvW?
I don’t really care if its removed from “world completion” or not. Everyone has their preference. I just hope I can get the transmutation thingie when I complete the maps still as it’s pretty much the only maps I get 100% on these days.
You know, I know lots of people that do wvw for map compleition and never go back again. INever really saw anyone get into wvw because of it. I think the best way to make wvw more appealing is to not make it be crappy. If anything EOTM is a better gateway so this is sort of obsolete.
Anyhow, I won’t miss it. I never really understood the challenge of “map compleition” in wvw. Must be a pver thing.

You’ve touched on a really interesting point here. Going into wvw and only trying to get the POIs and vistas will more than likely give someone who wouldn’t otherwise be doing wvw a bad impression of what the whole thing is or can be about (that’s been my experience, anyway).
Alternatively, I’ve actually had a good time there when I went in with friends or guildies with the express purpose of doing something directly wvw-related, and without worrying about any POIs I was or wasn’t getting. Going there to try and get the exploration/mapping crap out of the way has never been anything but a flat-out pain in the kitten though.
If the aim is to get more people into wvw, removing this requirement might actually be a positive step in that direction.

Well IMO “required” isn’t the best way to entice people. Chores aren’t fun, after all. Without truly enjoying the content, nothing really works. Well, though I suppose it could be argued there should be more oppuyrtunities for people to give it a chance, of which once again I’ll point to EOTM as being able to get people interested in wvw proper far more effectively.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
Dungeons have never been required to explore yet they are more connected to Tyria than WvW. You only had to farm one dungeon for a specific gift.
I have all the map completion I need at this time, but I am glad this is finally changed. How people of any side can be against this I do not understand, this brings only advantages. People who do not like WvW do not have to enter it in order to get a reward they intend to use outside of WvW, and people who like WvW do not have to deal with map completers filling up maps while not contributing to the efforts going on. I honestly doubt map completing made many people WvW who would not otherwise have realised they liked this game mode sooner or later.
I understand that these changes provoke sentiments on the reward balance between PvE en WvW, but that’s a different problem that can be solved in a different way, not an argument against these changes.
They should add something else as a reward for wvw map completion. Maybe make new weapons, or give access to mistforged for those who have done it or do it. Im not into wvw but i liked the fact you had to do pve and wvw maps because it was fair to both kinds of players.
I like the mistforged idea.
+1
Getting it all done deserves some kind of hero title imo..it is supposed to be a challenge, not a walk in the park
It looks like anet strikes again against wvw. Always taking away any help for wvw and letting starve wvw’er for months for colorful tags and account-wide ranks, new maps. Ignoring the pleas for changing the wvw achievements. After that change, how will people know that there is something where you can really have good fights? To be honest, once I made the map completion and the pve part was the hell of boredom. There are not many advanced fights, I could remember who were similar to a fight in wvw. One was the victory about the sea witch in Mount Maelstrom with 2 other people and the other was the fight against the wesp queen with someone else and a lot of npc’s.
Dear Anet, and you are wondering why many wvw-player are so toxic? That’s only the disappointment about the attentions you give to this part of the game. Maybe you can do something!
Here is my wishlist:
A purchase of dungeon token for badges of honor, making the wvw-armor salvageable, delete the badges of honor from the loot-table of the achievement chests and a higher chance for a precursor than in pve. That would be wonderful if you could do this without letting us wait for months again. Thank you
If you think map completing the wubwub makes people want to stay there, you’re mad. It’s unbelievably unfun.
Wubwub daily achievements probably do more to get people in there than map completion ever did.
Hell, I’d rather visit each PoI in the WvW maps 10x in different weeks to get a Gift than doing the Hearts in PvE
Those godawful Hearts are the main reason I have only ever managed 100% map completion on one of my characters. Except for my poor NPE thief they all have 100% WvW maps in comparison.
Not that I mind this change, as I still have the bragging rights of doing it before it was removed.

Dungeons have never been required to explore yet they are more connected to Tyria than WvW. You only had to farm one dungeon for a specific gift.
Gift of Knowledge, requiring 500 crystals from the Crucible of Eternity, and you still do. (This one is one of the components required for the legendary rifle The Predator.) Actually, I’m given to understand after discussing the subject with guildmates that certain other legendary weapons require you to farm another specific dungeon (depending on the weapon in question) for the rewards needed to get the gift.

Except for that last one (about precursors, which are hard enough for PvE’rs to get as it is), I’m on board with these suggestions. In fact, not only should WvW armor be made salvageable, karma armor – such as you get from the Orr temples – should be made salvageable. It’s very frustrating when you put a set of pricey runes on karma armor, then upgrade to ascended and can’t recover those runes (I ended up having to toss the karma armor into the MF).

Apparently you are not aware of the PvP dungeon reward tracks, that also yield dungeon tokens, thereby eliminating the need to do the actual dungeon runs. You can either wait for their rotation to come up, or unlock them permanently by doing each dungeon’s story path once.
