Unless I am mistaken just to unlock half of the training line, we need 212 hero points?

It’s 400 points total to unlock everything in an elite spec training line – I just can’t remember off hand how many points folks have currently if they have done all the existing ones, but it’s right around 200. The rest you’ll need to earn in jungle to unlock the deeper skills/traits/etc. in the training line.

You only need 60 hero points to begin using your elite spec, the points you spend after that continue to unlock more skills, traits, skins, etc.

Again, hero challenges are worth 10 points each in the jungle. So no you don’t need to go do 200-400 jungle challenges.

You can put how many hero points required as you want behind those skins. But plz plz don’t put such a crazy amount of hero challenges required for just to play the elite spec.

Grinding in this game should be all about cosmetics not to just play the basic game! Now you have to grind every single character for the maguuma jungle hero challenges. Map exploration is fun for the first time. But after that is just so boring and grindy. And to do that thing 9 times on each of my characters is just a nightmare.

You are basically bringing back the old trait unlock system. Except for being even worse because the access to hero points is even more limited.

Worst decision ever.

Unlocking your elite spec is a training line in your training panel that costs hero points. You do need to have trained all the existing training lines before you’re allowed to put hero points into your elite spec.

If you’ve got all the hero points in the existing game you’ll have enough to train about half the elite specialization training line on launch day. The rest you’ll need to earn in the jungle or via the new system Tyler outlined yesterday from WvW. The number of points to fully train your elite spec is higher than other training lines – but hero challenges in the jungle are worth 10 points each, so it’s not actually as big as it appears.

Revenant hype just took a complete nose dive… There went half my weekend grinding hero points…

Why? At 80 you have all unlocked, then go to jungle to get 10x points

Base Revenant is slow. Yes, they have the Shiro legend for superspeed, but thats 8sec of superspeed on a 10 sec cool down, but also only if you don’t use any other skills (so no condi cleanse or dashes). The lack of perm swiftness (or any swiftness on that matter) really hurts when you need to travel across maps.

play a guardian then cry me a river

Guardians have swiftness from staff and shouts and they always have. Also Guardians aren’t trying to play catch up because they already exist and can already have all the base hero points.

You’re telling me you want to rush through the map to find up to 40 hero challenges to fully unlock the elite? When you can only explore a map for the first time once.

Personally I will take my time. I was just trying to make it clear how quickly you’ll be able to get your elite if you rushed it.

Who thought it was a good idea to add 200pts more than required for all 3 beta weekends to unlock the elite. This is dumb. Even with map completion and all skill point challenges in Tyria done, I’ll be 197 pts shy of a full elite unlock. You guys had it right in the first place and now you spoilt it for no good reason. We already have masteries to keep us in HoT areas, why do people need even more annoying incentive.

Apparently it’s so that no one can unlock the elite specs first day. This was the reason given for changing Liquid Wxp from WvW…

Honestly… if you can’t spend 2 hours getting the hero challenges unlocked then you don’t really have enough time to play MMO’s. You should consider a different hobby. The MAIN form of progression in this expansion is elite specs and masteries. Why should you just be able to fully complete the main portion of the expansion instantly upon downloading it?

This is obscene. The fact that a huge time-sink in world completion only gets you barely halfway there is crazy. This not only totally devalues hero points in the core Tyria areas, it means that we have to grind Maguuma just to enjoy the elite spec for Halloween which is time limited.

There’s still about three days until launch. Now I’m curious as to what other nasty surprises they’re waiting to spring on us.

“Pre-order the game! You’ve bought it? Great! Raids with unavoidable damage! Healbots! Redistribution of dungeon rewards to new content! Map completion gives you half an elite spec! Have fun! :^)”

I am beyond disgusted at this point.

The worst part is that even if we can convince Anet to reduce the hero points needed, it will still probably be too much. I was having nightmare’s about 170 points.

I mean some of us have Jobs and families. How are we supposed to unlock this in a reasonable amount of time after paying for the expansions ahead of time? If I had known this was going to be introduced I would never have bought the expansion.

I just don’t understand how they think this is a good idea on any level. The idea of elite specs being gated behind world completion + 20 HoT hero points or 40 HoT hero points for every single character is mind boggling. How does anybody look at that as a concept and think, “Yeah, that’s a good idea. People clearly want the content they paid for to be gated behind 40 hero points on every single character. So you have at least one of each profession? What’s effectively 360 hero points between friends? They all come from the exact same four maps. Surely you’ll get really good at grinding out those 40 points per character by the time you’re doing your seventh run through, right?”

We’re less than a week away from launch. I should be in full blooded hype mode, not getting disgusted more and more at every announcement that’s coming out. I should be excited. Instead, I’m wary about what ridiculous grind or nerf we’re going to be ambushed with next.

I thought Anet was against making incredibly grindy stuff? This completely ruined my plans of having a Herald ready on day 1

Do people actually know the definition of grind?
A little grind is OK if you want to keep your game longer and interesting.
Compare grinding to games like Maple Story, now that’s grind.

If you need 200~400 points before mastering you’re elite, that’s 20~40 hero points from Verdant brink, easily accomplishable inside a day or over 3 days if you play sufficiently.

You are forgetting multiple characters. First, you have to get the masteries to get around, etc. However long all of that will take on one character. Then, you have to take all your other characters to each of the hero challenges that you want the elite spec on (I wonder if Anet realizes they are actually discouraging a lot of use of the new specs on multiple characters… perhaps this is the intention?)

And wait, you sit there and think it will only take 2 hours? And then talk about elite specs being the main portion of the expansion… whatever. If you think you can just get through everything in 2 hours shortly after launch, gl.

So you know how easily accessible the hero challenges are and exactly where they are and the quickest routes to each of them so that players who want to play the elite on day 1 can get them without ruining the first time map exploration too much? If so, please share. I’m sure there are players who want to know.

I’m personally in no rush to get to the elite, but some players are and now many of them get to weigh the desire to play the elite to its full potential and the joy of exploration for the first time. And that’s honestly sad. That many players have been forced into a position where they are between a rock and a hard place. Either way, many players will end up disappointed.

I’m guessing the idea is that getting elite specs is part of the horizontal progression Anet wants to add with HoT. Making them trivial to get would go against that idea.

Challenge =/= timesink. Raids were promised to be challenging content. I’ve had my share of 8+ hour raid runs back in EQ1.

Before passing final judgment on the elite spec cost I’d like to see just how much of those 400 points are needed for ‘core’ things. That is if I only want the trait line and ignore the skills/skins/whatever else they put behind the HP gate.

How does this affect Heralds ?

If you say classes can start unlocking at 60 points does that mean classes can start using a limited number of the utilities ? If this is the case then what do you purpose for Heralds who have to use all or nothing ? Are we expect to run around with only 1 utility because we don’t have the ability to compensate the remaining utilities with old utilities ?

Doesn’t seem like a very well thought out plan imo.

Yeah that just sets the mood wrong, starting everybody in the expansion on the wrong foot. It’s not what GW2 is supposed to be about. I’m a WvW player who PvE from time to time, but I do it when I want to, when I feel like doing it. I do have fun sometimes. But now I’ll be forced to grind hero points for not just 1 character (god forbid elite spec be unlocked account wide), I’ll have to grind for all the characters on my account.

That just sours the mood for me, 3 days before launch.

This is vertical progression all over again. Except I didn’t/don’t care about ascended armor because it was a minor stat increase. THIS represents new builds, playstyles, weapons, etc, and it is being locked behind massive grind walls.

I’m expecting a big community backlash and hopefully this will be changed. To whomsoever came up with this idea, kitten you… and I don’t really mean “kitten”… you know what I mean…

P.S. Waiting until now to tell people tells me that you KNEW it would be received poorly but didn’t want to deal with it. What is with devs doing stupid things that they know they shouldn’t do? You know better Anet! SHAME!!!!

Jeez! It’s just 20 HP if you already have world completion. Or just (maybe) 40 if you don’t. You’re most likely going to get all of them in a single day, or in two to three days at most if you’re the “rushing” type.
You’re not going to get your elite spec instantly, and that’s totally fine, deal with it! And then you’re the same people that complain about lack of progression!

This community is so incredibly spoiled beyond belief.

All you should be upset about is having to unlock all traits before going spec; this is reminiscent of the logic behind the old (new) trait system, where you had to unlock with skill points and gold if you weren’t completing certain achievements. It simply wasn’t fun to deal with.

Colin, could you explain the reasoning behind having to unlock all core specializations before working toward an elite?

edit: This topic’s moving way too quickly (and much too crazy) but for anyone reading: I don’t think the answer is really that “they want us to be level 80”, but if it is, that’s a weird way of locking elite content out. I agree that 80 is an acceptable cap, just not that I should have to spend more points in meaningless lines for my alts.

Doesn’t matter what the rate is when you take into account you need every single point in the old maps as well. That x9 is too much.

Except you don’t! There are enough hero challenges in the jungle you don’t need to do any in the core tyrian world – those simply speed you up on day one if you already got them.

This is all I needed to hear to keep me excited and not overwhelmed. They are ELITE Specs – they should be locked at first and you should have to have the base class mastered. That always seemed like a given to me. They have to be unlocked and then earned – and they can be earned entirely through exploring the new content instead of grinding original Tyria for the 5th time…?

<3 Oh yes, I am here for this. Thanks for clarifying. Now I get to focus on Halloween and HoT without the looming additional mainland map grind making me feel guilty for having fun.

It should be mentioned that this 400 points likely includes the runes, sigils, weapon, and armor piece that come with unlocking the line.

Additionally utility skills are in a separate line from traits.

You can most likely unlock the full trait line with <200 points.

Or you could unlock all the skills for <200 points

It will only take 400 points to unlock all the traits, all the skills, the set of runes, the sigil, the weapon and the armor piece.

Doing at least 200 wvw level x 9 profession… that’s gruesome…
Other solution being to grind million of exp in the jungle of maguma… and still have to unlock all defy…

Sigh … farewell real life, farewell…

No core profession should be balanced around an optional elite specialization.

Unless I am mistaken just to unlock half of the training line, we need 212 hero points?

It’s 400 points total to unlock everything in an elite spec training line – I just can’t remember off hand how many points folks have currently if they have done all the existing ones, but it’s right around 200. The rest you’ll need to earn in jungle to unlock the deeper skills/traits/etc. in the training line.

You only need 60 hero points to begin using your elite spec, the points you spend after that continue to unlock more skills, traits, skins, etc.

Again, hero challenges are worth 10 points each in the jungle. So no you don’t need to go do 200-400 jungle challenges.

Had Arena Net decided to gate these behind the personal story, it would have been effectively the same thing. Gating access behind content.

Get to level 80, then play the expansion to unlock the class.

Right? I feel like people have become so entitled they don’t want a game anymore. They just want to hit character create and have everything in the game maxed out for them and done.

No, that was beta weekend.

I am most definitely NOT saying I want a game to play itself. I myself say to people to actually play the game. And I’m fully intending to play the game. However, I wanted to enjoy the content (which I will anyways, the first time), but not be forced to practically play the entire new content multiple times on multiple characters, just to get access to elite specs. I’d rather not feel like I have to rush through something as fast as I can on multiple characters. My solution, is to not bother. My solution, is to not take any of my current characters through the HoT story, and instead take Revenant through it. Unless, of course, you have to go far into the story to unlock Revenant.

Unlocking your elite spec is a training line in your training panel that costs hero points. You do need to have trained all the existing training lines before you’re allowed to put hero points into your elite spec.

If you’ve got all the hero points in the existing game you’ll have enough to train about half the elite specialization training line on launch day. The rest you’ll need to earn in the jungle or via the new system Tyler outlined yesterday from WvW.

Uh, I don’t know how to politely phrase this, but you (as in, Anet as a collective whole) need to rethink this right now, so that you can implement something else before the HoT goes live.

I don’t think a single person playing your game wants to unlock every single skill and trait line for a profession before being able to use an “optional, non-replacement and non-required” specialization. That point requirement that you are suggesting, on top of picking up every unwanted skill and trait, for lack of a better or more tactful word, is completely asinine.

Elite Specs need to cost similar amounts of points as other lines, or elite specs need to not require you to have unlocked everything else. One or the other. Not both. That’s absurd. It’ll kill alts.

It affects one class in particular very differently because of the way Anet decided to design it. Let’s say you grind away and get your fist 60 points and unlock whatever specialization it is you’re aiming for. That’s all fine and dandy but what about the Herald ? Their utilities are locked in so for those people who want to play Rev are we suppose to unlock Herald at 60 points and either not use it or run around without utilities ?

If you WvW, you play WvW to earn your points. If you PvE, you play PvE to earn your points.

Yeah. Playing the content 24 times! Yay I can’t wait to smash my head against my desk…

So are you saying that they should design the game for people who actively use 24 characters? That is insane.

Hell, at 24 characters pretty much everything will feel like a ‘grind’.

There are player with even more characters (just lvl them with tomes and/or crafting). I could live with the decision that I have to grind through this whole stuff once per class but this is ridiculous…up to now everything was pretty well designed. Hit lvl 80 and you are ready to WvW all day long but now you have to grind PvE stuff over and over again or grind EotM.

BTW Nope. While doing normal WvW you won’t be able to unlock everything at a reasonable pace…as a roamer it is even worse.

It should be mentioned that this 400 points likely includes the runes, sigils, weapon, and armor piece that come with unlocking the line.

Additionally weapon skills are in a separate line from traits.

You can most likely unlock the full trait line with <200 points.

Or you could unlock all the skills for <200 points

It will only take 400 points to unlock all the traits, all the skills, the set of runes, the sigil, the weapon and the armor piece.

What are you talking about? Gear has never been locked behind hero points. Why would it be that way now? Especially when we already know that the Rev armour set is unlocked through a collection set. It seems far more likely that other armour sets would unlock the same way instead of bizarrely being coupled with hero point unlocks for the first time ever.

Also, Colin didn’t state that world completion got you an entire elite spec minus a bunch of gear. He said it would get you about halfway, so your hypothesis about 200 hero points unlocking the entire trait line doesn’t hold much sway for me.

So let me break this down for the casual players that think you were just going to login on day one of HoT release and be able to access the new elite specs in all their glory, why would that have ever been the case? this is an expansion, this is new content, obtaining the elite specs should require you to work for it, I’m sorry I don’t know what games you have been playing where you don’t have to do anything to get the things you want, but I’m happy that its not this game.

The worst part is that even if we can convince Anet to reduce the hero points needed, it will still probably be too much. I was having nightmare’s about 170 points.

I mean some of us have Jobs and families. How are we supposed to unlock this in a reasonable amount of time after paying for the expansions ahead of time? If I had known this was going to be introduced I would never have bought the expansion.

Youre talking about half mapping two whole zones of hero point challenges….Seriously this is too much for you?

Honestly… if a couple hours of playtime is going to DESTROY YOUR LIFE maybe playing games just isn’t in the cards right now. Pick up a hobby that takes less time from your work/family.

No, its just mind numbingly dull to grind this many hero points to unlock a specialization that I payed for. I would be far less upset if Anet had of announced this ages ago. But the fact I’v been baited into paying for this expansion by Anet deliberately failing to release this info so that I can be locked behind a grind wall I was un-aware existed, has to say the least, annoyed me somewhat.

Fellow Tyrians, I apologize for my wimpy posts. I have been so busy trying to get all the skill points on all my characters that when I read Colin’s bombshell I, lost it.

Sometimes, I think I am a marshmallow with a steel pit in the center. Once I get through all the marshmallow stuff, I hit the steel pit and rise to the challenge.

So, tell me, what will be the best profession to take into the Jungle???

There is no unlocking Revenant. It is created during character creation. Herald on the other hand you would need to unlock.
