You’ll need hero points , no need to post a thread every day

That is not a confirmation though is it? Considering that you have all unlocked at level 80.

Confirmation of what? Anet has explicitly said you simply spend the hero points to unlock the line and purchase the skills (like the vanilla traits/utilities) assuming one has HoT. There’s no special quest or other jazz that you need to do.
The only thing in the air is how many points will be required though it’s likely enough to simply be at lvl 80 and have a good chunk of the map cleared.

Have they stated a number? Should I grind all available hero points for each elite specialisation I wish to play?

No numbers announced, so it’s probably better to be safe than sorry.

Just checked my mesmer only has 211 hero points with main map completion and wvw map completion. The second highest is my ranger at 100. Requiring 170 is definitely too much.

I agree, I’m worried they will get carried away with the hero point cost. I know its supposed to feel epic to get it, but 170 is a bit high.
100-120 is much more acceptable while still needing 50%~ map completion.

Half of my characters are at 80 and the others in the 70s. Having them all at 100 before HOT is realistic. Being at 200 before HOT is laughable.
If the skins are optional I will go with traits/skills first as they are more useful and afterwards get a few choice pieces (I mix and match stuff). Sure, the skins would be great to have in their entirety but I can live without them if need be. Plus I am sure some variation on them will be available through other means later (like the gem store).

It would be kind of pathetic if it was easy to get Elite Specializations on all characters. However, I don’t think people should be worried. I believe the 170 number and I am working towards that on my main but I am pretty sure it will be more efficient to unlock them in the new maps rather then through map completion in vanilla. As others have stated, we don’t have enough in game for three elite specs per class and since they removed getting hero points from leveling up post 80 I am sure something replaces that in the expansion.

So how will this work?
Is it just like any other core specialization: “Fire-magic/Explosions/Soul Reaping”? Like this circle of skills which you unlock with Hero Points.
Will it be 60 Hero Points per full track?
Will the weapon/gearpiece that comes with every elite spec unlock with this reward track? Thanx !
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Diovid.9506
It is a reward track like the ones for core specializations except that it includes not only traits but also skills, runes and skins (all in one big track).
Edit: It was datamined that it will be over 200 hero points per full track (170 for just the traits and skills) but there is no official confirmation on that.

Like the post said it was datamined. There have been many things that have been datamined and not in the game so no use thinking this is the official number.

If they do 170 this entire thing was a waste of development money.
Look at how much effort has gone into developing this. Would it make sense for most of your work to benefit only a few people? I guarantee you there were plenty of people who tested the elites and do not have 170 HPs sitting around. Should we now give up those tracks we fell in love with?
I am working towards 100 on all of my characters. I am placing my money between 85 and 90 but want to give myself a cushion.

I agree, 250 is a joke to unlock everything.
No possible way that’s the final price.

Elite specs are not meant to be something easy to unlock. Don’t forget HoT is an expansion, meaning you need to have finished the vanilla game before jumping to it.
If people do not want to actually play with their characters but rather lvl them up with a gazzillion tomes fine by me but don’t cry when someone that actually played content, has an easier job unlocking the elite spec…

At least it should be enough to have all the hp’s with one toon and make it way less for alts.
Whats the point in leveling up alt’s with tomes if you have to grind the heropoints afterwards anyways.

Gw2 is a large game with a lot of people playing it. Not everyone thinks the same things are fun. Whatever they would have done some people would think it was boring.
If elite specs will cost 170 hero points you don’t need world completion to unlock it. You only need to do the hero challenges. This is a lot faster then world completion. Might still not be fun but it’s way faster I personally I don’t think this is an issue. Elite specs shouldn’t come for free, but I can agree that this is probably not the best way to do it.
The only people that get kittened over are those that WvW, which they should do something about. There should be a way for people to unlock for WvW only.

from what i understand these are just the first of the elite specializations(they said u can only have one elite spec…so more to come)as such i think around 65-80 may actually be accurate(if we consider up to 2 extra specializations beside the first)
P.S i personally hope for a necro specialization where we ride an undead dragon in battleXD(and each class with a fitting mount for that set of specialization,it can work similar to the mounts the new mobs have(i can dream)

Correct. A-net has stated that they want each profession to end up with at least 3 elite specializations.

My money is on 85-90 for a full skill/trait unlock. You can spend more on the skins if you want to feel special but everyone gets to play with the mechanics for a reasonable number of hero challenges.
Right now I am between 90 and 95 on all my characters. I want to get all of them to 100 (or a little more) by launch to give me a cushion but can not see it being more than 100, especially if they plan on having more elites in the future.

Regardless of the actual cost, I’m stocking up on popcorn for the inevitable, “I don’t want to do Hero Challenges posts.”
This sounds pretty accurate, and if Anet gives in and just hands out the points it will be the inevitable, “I spent weeks grinding so I had my points and you give them away for hitting 80, wtf anet”.

I have only recently returned to the game to prepare for Heart of Thorns.
Is there are number of hero points we should prepare for Heart of Thorns’ new features, assuming we already have every trait/skill in the training tab already in the current game.

Datamining numbers are
170 hero points to unlock all skills/trait. 250 hero points to unlock all the new skins for the elite spec. But that’s just data mining. This could change and will probably change.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Crimson Clouds.4853
There’s been some datamining to suggest it could cost 250 hero points to fully unlock everything, including weapon and armour skins.
The post points out that currently there are 214 hero points in game right now.
You get 398 from levelling to 80. (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hero_point) which is exactly the number required to unlock every skill and trait in the standard class (98 are required to unlock all skills and 60 are required for each trait line. (60*5)+98=398).
So, to answer your question for me personally…
The character I plan on using primarily in HoT has not got 100% world completion, so I’ve unlocked only the bare bones of what I need for his current build, to allow me to fully spec into the reaper line. My 100%ers should be ok, even with everything unlocked, as I imagine that there will be a few hero points in the new maps.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Kaligos.7285
You should do world completion with the class, whose elite specilization you like the most, or at least get all the hero points.
Though datamining can give you some idea, how many hero points you could need, but it can and will probably, as Thaddeus.4891 said, change.

It could change, yes.
Personally… I doubt it will.
I don’t think it’s coincidence that you can unlock all base specialisations just by getting to 80, and that there are 214 available through the maps. It’s not a stretch to think that the HoT maps combined will introduce another 36 or so hero points, which would make up to the total of 250 needed to unlock everything for the elite spec. I think this is possible considering the Orr maps have 12-17 hero points each.
Bear in mind that you only need 170 to unlock all traits and skills. The extra 80 points are purely for cosmetics.

This is not entirely right, as we also get new runes and sigils for each elite specialization. This was stated somewhere, but I don’t remember where exactly.

Hmm, forgot about those.
But is there not a chance that the runes and sigils (or recipes for them) could be rewarded at one of the lower blank “item” intervals?
And what’s to say that the upgrades won’t be available through the TP? Currently the profession-specific runes are trade-able.

I do have world completion on the toon I plan on using the most, and I only have 200 hero points on her. I did the Krait Obelisk in my friends instance, so where are the other 14 points? Is there a list of non-world map hero points somewhere?

Frankly, I don’t know. We’ll know for sure when HoT is released. But I’m pretty sure, we will get the recipes and we’re going to be able to sell them. It’d be just plain dumb to not be able to.

True, I am shooting to have all 8 of my characters at 100 and that is WITH reading about the debate here and making a concerted effort to do hero challenges. Both the easy ones and the ones that make me want to put a fist through my monitor.
I can virtually guarantee that the average (note average, we are not talking vets, elites, etc) player of GW2 will not have 100 at the drop. Since many of them bought HOT (so had access to the BWEs) they already have a taste of the elites and would spit fur if they could not roll an elite with all the traits they have been watching on points of interest.
Assuming the datamine is just a placeholder all we can do is speculate. I see several major places it could be at:
only needing a level 80: this would fit with precedent and their statements that you only need an 80 to use HOT things (ie, elites)
65 pts (or was it different) to make up for what they gave us after getting blowback when they changed skills/traits before
85-90 pts …. this represents the cost of a trait line (60) and the average of a skill line (25)
100 pts …. a nice round number
I see VERY low odds of more than 100 and the odds will drop precipitously.
Sure, they will probably ask for more for the skins. Let those be the ‘bragging rights’ things people want to show off with. As long as they do not make the cost of entry higher for just playing the character.
As to the skins, they would have to be REALLY good for me to want to burn HPs on them anyway. About the only exception is the blindfold for the revenant and that is not an elite.

Agreed.
Also, we should keep in mind that Anet plans more elite specializations with each expansion and it would make very little sense to completely burn your hero points for unlocking one elite specialization.

So lemme get this straight. I intend to unlock elite specs on an engi, warrior, and necro, and quite possibly on my poor neglected Ranger. All for WvW, since that is pretty much all I do. BUT in their infinite wisdom I am going to be forced to go open world to garner hero points above and beyond the ones I have banked and waiting for me?
I took a week off of WvW already to get 60-80 banked hero points/character based on the 65 number they popped out earlier. Now we’re looking at 170? I ground through world completion on 2 characters already, and that was a horrendous experience for me. It’s not like there are an abundance of hero points available in WvW, and tracking down the open world ones take a ton of time that could be better spent in WvW.

Pretty much.
Only sPVP gets the full unlocks with out doing anything.
I really hate the current unlock system. The first system was better, skill point based and you got skill points every time you leveled past 80. That is how the system should be. Forcing players to go out and map on every character to get the spec (mind you, mapping outside of HoT content too…) is stupid. It takes away from other areas of the game and forces you to commit time to mindless boring tasks to collect points. And its not even time gated…..So, IMHO, there is no real reason for it to be this way.

Ugh if we got a hero point everytime we leveled past 80 I could deal, but exploring over and over with different characters seems like overkill to me. The characters I play the most with nowadays have for the most part under 10% world unlock(all doubles of original characters. 18 total and counting on the same account.) so I suppose it wouldn’t be terribly ugly to get them, just very time consuming.

Anet – please take note of the general attitude of this and the reddit thread.. if those are your intended Hero Point numbers then I’d say you need a serious re-think. Maybe you’re going to adda ton of new HP’s in HoT but even still.. those numbers are insane. No one likes hero challenges btw – they’re boring as hell. Doing thousands of them before we can have fun? No thanks.

I actually find HP really fun, by far the best part of any map for me ( better than vistas, POI, hearts and events) i like to fight some elite mob to get the HP, so “no one likes” are really wrong.

Now that I have passed 90 HPs on all my characters I have pretty much done the ones I know about (or the few I decided were so insane for 1 pt that I would skip them after I died enough times). True, all of my characters were doing the same ones but at least they were doing them in wildly different orders so I had to relearn the challenge each time.
Now? Go to the wiki and find where the missing HPs are in a zone. Then go there with character after character doing the same exact set of tasks I just did with another character 15 minutes ago. By the time HOT comes out I will be ‘will someone please just shoot me now’ as that is what it will be from now until I know the cost.
I am REALLY REALLY REALLY hoping that just unlocking all the skills and traits is not something greater than 100. Not even requiring any HP is probably what most are expecting. This is not my idea of fun. Even if your idea of fun is challenging how fun and challenging is it to do the same exact kitteny thing 8 times in a row? My concept of fun is ‘play in a zone, when you get bored move on to the next’.
Please anet, just tell us? Also you can pretty much guess what will happen if the # is too high.

I’ll give you one right now. I don’t want to only do hero challenges. I want freedom to progress through a multitude of methods. Its a serious problem that anet should address.
Actually it isn’t. It’s only a problem for those that don’t want to do the work and play the game the way it’s being designed.
I don’t want to have to sell junk. I want it to just be converted into gold for me. That’s a serious problem, but I don’t expect ANet to do anything about it because that’s not how they designed the game.
