Pre-Purchase Community Address
I don’t want to know anything about the story beyond the title, but with any purchase I want to know what I’m buying. A company that can’t layout what their product entails, and a consumer that finds nothing wrong with that is not a trend I would want to see encouraged & accepted.
Not to say this is what Anet is doing, or that HoT won’t be a great expansion.
It’s not like ANet didn’t go an extended period of time before announcing numbers here in the U.S. either. Some 3.8 million sales out of the gate in China isn’t exactly a failure.
In fact, GW2’s failure has been reiterated, even.
Meanwhile, GW2’s profits kep falling, despite the China release.
F-A-I-L-U-R-E.
I wonder if your “ten new professions” (LOOOOOOOOOOL) will be enough to make HoT a success. Otherwise, the future wouldn’t exactly be bright for ArenaNet.
Last link is for sales and it’s expected for sales to decline after initial release. Also, as far as I was aware, Anet wasn’t selling GW2 in China directly. This would not show up in that chart.
Can anyone confirm that the new WvW map and PvP mode is pre expansion?
Didn’t think a thread about the forum would just be another complaint thread. That’s no fun at all. :/
well yeah, that’s the point, i’d rather be in game!! ^.^
if people stopped complaining, then anet would have no idea what went wrong. dunno why people want us to pretend everything is just awesome sauce when it’s not. the anet developers can pretty much give us any game we want. so that’s not the problem.

It’s cute when people think that business is like kids playing in the park. Those numbers come from NCSoft’s quarterly reports, which list GW2’s earnings (rather obviously in full, not only the sales of the game itself). Given how NCSoft is a publicly traded company, they can’t hide their numbers; and it’s very much laughable to think that they would hide their profits, anyway, when showing results to their investors.
GW2’s earnings are just that. It’s already taking in consideration gem sales, game sales and everything else you would like to mention. Yes, the game is earning less than a MMORPG released in 1998. No, there is no way to call it other than a failure. And you can go see by yourself, the numbers are freely available.

What you do not realize is that sales from China do not hit NCSOFT directly. From what I read, the Chinese company is doing all of the sales and NCSOFT gets royalties. Royalties are not reported as sales or at least not for GW2. They’re likely reported as other income or something of the like. You’d notice that GW2 sales didn’t increase at all when it was released in China which leads you to believe that it’s not part of the GW2 sales. I suggest that rather than blindly posting graphs and articles, you look into what they mean.

Between the title of the thread and the opening statement/question, it’s a bit confusing.
Is your query about what you might receive before release, or after release?
Either way, you can read about all the upcoming new maps and game modes for WvW and PvP in the News blogs accessed through the link above.
Good luck.
Yeah this…. I went ahead and answered what you will get from purchasing the expansion.
The WvW map and Stronghold are going to be available regardless of purchase.
Why is it being advertised as being a part of the expansion? Stronghold is being listed as a feature for HoT. If it’s being added before the expansion, is it really part of it?
Its not being added before expansion, the other poster is just mixing it up with not having to have hot to use said features.
Don’t forget that your $50 buys you not only HoT release content, but all subsequent content (future updates) released for the expansion, as well.
Future content updates can’t be HOT-exclusive or they’d be betraying all the owners of the core game. ie: you won’t need the expac for all future content.
Not to mention IMO living story content isn’t worth paying for.
Future content updates WILL be HOT-exclusive because they will take place in HoT areas.
Nothing they’ve said so far indicates that future content will be HOT-exclusive.
I highly highly doubt it will be, as not all players will buy the expac, and making future LS content HOT-only would efffectively kill off those players, which would just be a stupid thing to do, business-wise.
Not that it’d bother me anyway, I think the living story content has been an abject failure in terms of entertainment value, and the resource-draining effects it’s had on the rest of the game.
I don’t get why people are complaining about the amount of info we have on HoT.
People are not complaining about the amount of info we have on HoT.
People are complaining that it appears to be an overpriced expansion with very little content and stinking like a grind cesspool.
The answer to that criticism has been “it only looks like HoT has very little content because we haven’t been told a lot about HoT”. That’s why you think the complain has been about the information.
ArenaNet is already trying to make their sale. Right now is most likely the moment when more people would buy the expansion – before HoT itself is released and people begin listing all the flaws it will obviously have. Even then, though, ArenaNet still avoids mentioning how much content the expansion will have. That is, by itself, an admission of guilt.
There isn’t really enough info to make a decision on whether you want to purchase HoT, unless you happen to love the game so much where you’ll purchase it even if it doesn’t have enough content.
See what HoT is doing it rewriting the way the game is played, in everything from specializations to masteries. It’s a very different game in some ways. Some of the long term problems we’ve had have already been solved, ie condition damage (well on the way to being solved once adjustments are made) and first person point of view. Anet isn’t charging for those updates, but to me, it’s all part of the game. I’m paying to keep playing. Sure I could play all the old stuff over and over again if I wanted, to, but I also want to see the story going forward, experience the new zones and, yes I want to glide and take advantage of the mastery system and guild halls.
For me, that’s enough to buy the expansion, because I believe I’ll get hundreds of hours out of hot. However, I feel like I only need to get 50-100 hours to make HoT worth buying to me.
Anet hasn’t really gone into enough detail about that content of the game, not the structure of the game. Yes we get a new class, but that’s not really content. Zones and what’s in them are content.
I believe there’ll be enough content, though it may be on the light side at this time. I also believe we’ll get more free content that expands on the content. So I won’t just be buying what’s in the box, but I"ll access all the stuff that comes later. Some people say that’s not justification for buying the box. I think it is.
Because if you don’t buy the box, you don’t get access to the stuff that comes later, particularly the continuing story. I’m also sure if they release new zones after, you won’t have access to those.
If you’re like me, plenty of information. But knowing how much content there actually is would go a long way to placating people.
Strange, I find the opposite true. I find the game more fun now than the forums.
ok, then please explain how the game has gotten more fun, maybe i’m missing something.
I have to admit, it is pretty easy to get folks going around here…
I don’t get why people are complaining about the amount of info we have on HoT. Why does every detail need to be explained before getting it? Whatever happened to discovering things in the game that you didn’t know about?
I am very interested in the remaining elite specs, I don’t want to be surprised there.
Can anyone confirm that the new WvW map and PvP mode is pre expansion?
Its great that you cant brows blogpost yourself.
Your question could have been answered by reading the first line in two blogposts.
Hello, my name is Tyler Bearce, a Game Designer here at ArenaNet, and I’m here to tell you about the new World vs. World desert Borderlands map that we’ve been hard at work creating for the Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™ expansion.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/essential-elements-of-the-new-borderlands/
If you can’t wait for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™ to get your hands on the new Stronghold PvP game mode
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-stronghold-pvp-public-beta-is-coming/
I am not paying $50.00 for this. I will wait for the price to come down. If I buy it at all.
Server: Maguuma
I believe that the game is worth the price. To all those who say that the expansion is not big enough, you need to remember that we are paying for not only everything that we have seen, but also a ton of things we have yet to see. This includes the next few seasons of living world.
Also, To all those people who are complaining that new players are getting a better deal for pre-purchasing it, the people who have been playing the game since launch have had a unique opportunity in the form of the entire first season of living world which nobody else can go back to play, and we also got season two for free to go back and play if we were online at the time.
TLDR: Is the expansion worth $50?
Yes.
Not shelling out 50$ for one WvW map, and a small part of Guild Halls dedicated to WvW…
More info is definitely required to warrant the purchase price
@Ricky
I didn’t say the game has gotten more fun. I said it’s more fun than the forums. It’s about as fun as it was for me. But that’s because I’m playing in a guild with cool people and we’re having fun together.
I you’re soloing MMOs, sure they’re just repetitive. That’s true of pretty much all MMOs. You do the same things over and over.
I have the advantage of playing all aspects of the game, including minigames, and the advantage of being an altoholic. That said…
The PoV changes were a nice QoL improve, the wallet changes were a nice QoL improvement, the personal story and leveling changes were nice improvements/fixes, and the new skill system gives me stuff to play around with, to try to find different builds that I like.
My biggest problem so far is the mesmer, and I’m trying out a bunch of different builds to see what sticks.
Also, because you can now save your WvW and PvE build I have to make builds for both on characters.
I enjoyed the karka hunt achievement in Lion’s Arch too, and I’ve yet to touch the new jumping puzzle, but I love jumping puzzles.
I still do guild missions with my guild and we still have a good time. In fact, doing the karka hunt with the guild was a blast.
I’ve enjoyed exploring the new LA, too.
And I’m leveling a new character and checking out the leveling changes.
Stuff like Teq is actually more interesting to me now, now that there’s a chance to fail. I actually have to do some work and hope other people are doing the work too. You can succeed at Teq. I guess some people would find the game more fun if it took no effort at all.
Scaled down dungeons are harder now than they were too. Not much but some.

I never claimed it would be added before the expansion, I just stated that it would be available regardless of purchase. It will most likely be released at the same time HoT launches.
fair enough, i can see why it’s working better for you than me….
I’m pretty much a pug player, my enjoyment is going around to different events meeting new people making new strategies, learning new stuff and simply being free spirited, lone wolf merc for hire. – this path gets repeatedly stomped by these changes. I find fun popular places, popular things to do – some before they even get popular, they pop up on the radar – get changed …die …again and again.
why don’t they work on places that aren’t popular and stop killing popular things just so people go to less popular places ? the old daily was fun because I had my favorite spots to visit, the new daily forces you to go to less visited spots. maybe they are less visited because they are less fun ? maybe ?
(edited by Ricky.4706)
What about those players who never played WoW, nor any sub game, yet still think HoT in it’s current state (at least from the info we got so far) is not worth it?
Also, just stop it with the $ / hour reasoning.
I got FFXIII for 7 euros on steam, and played it for 150 h+, so it was better right?
I got FTL for 1.39 euros, my playtime is 70 hours and I play it almost daily. So much better.
Then again, I play LoL since 3 years now, and that’s F2P. Best value ever.

Also buying a beer is 1-4 euros, and only brings 5-15 minutes of enjoyment. Never buy beer!

i usually log on for a little bit to fight tequatl – that point seems moot now as it’s ridiculously overpowered….so i have to pass on that
i use to wvw , but since the match balances were never addressed, and right now it’s an op 1 shotter fest ….while my server jumped up to a higher rank/bracket in wvw …we are a small team but we are good …so now we are trashed for the next few fights
the spvp is just not for me…. i’d work on my grandmaster characters but the new ‘features’ and new ‘crafter’ might make that effort moot
i’m at a loss, and don’t even feel confident to choose something else i might enjoy doing because it will be upgraded to some form of parcheesi in some future patch.
it’s not the price of the expansion that’s bugging me, it’s the fact that they always seek to kill what i start having fun doing! I kind of want to log in now to play but feeling this big “Why?!” question from deep in my soul!
Fortunately debating with you guys has proven to be fun and intellectually stimulating.
what’s wrong with this picture ?!i think anet needs to send us a memo of what they want us to do, cuz seriously, i’m not enjoying this play as you want, then they kill the things we play with.
I can’t help but agree with you, I do tend to spend more time on the forums battling white knights than playing the game lately. They do tend to present more entertainment than the GW2 game. I think its ANET’s forum balancing that has led to this. They would really have no clue as to what to do with their game if it was not for the forums.

Maybe it’s time you spread your wings. As the game changes, how you approach it has to change. This is true for all MMOs. There was a period of time when I did fractals like mad. I did them for months. Then I did other stuff.
When an MMO changes, you go out and you find what works for you, because it’s very very easy to get into a rut, and it’s even easier to think the rut is the game.
Remember the Queensdale champ train? Do you know how many people logged on and pretty much did nothing but that all day? Sometimes for hours. But it’s not the game. And when it got nerfed, some people were mad. They complained that they game was ruined because there weren’t so many champs in starting areas.
But there was just as many people, probably more, who loved that change too.

Of course being obvious doesn’t mean you’re wrong, nor does saying something negative automatically make you right. Just saying.

It’s not really relevant whether you’ve played WoW or haven’t, because this discussion is about the price and some people are comparing that price with what you get from other expansions in other MMOs. That’s true whether or not you’ve played those MMOs.
It’s factually true that of the three most popular MMOs in the west right now, two of them charge sub fees and those sub fees need to be factored into what you’re paying to play the game.
Now you can compare Guild Wars 2 to single player games, and you can compare Guild Wars 2 to sub games, but neither comparison is right.
As for the number of hours of entertainment you get out of it, your example is flawed. That’s because you waited until games were cheaper to buy them at that price, and during that time, you didn’t get to play them…and that works for some people.
But with an MMO it’s a bit difference since things do change. For example people who bought Guild Wars 2 at launch at a chance to experience some things that are currenty not in the game. They have the chance to get some loot that’s not in the game, and may never return to the game. I have plenty of things new players can’t now get.
So all things being equal, if you’d bought FFXIII at launch for full price, then by all means HoT at full price is probably a better value.
If you wait to buy HoT, it will go down in price. And you can do that. And when it doesn, then you can compare it to the older games that you bought at a steep discount.

I bought LoL for a grand total of 0.
Don’t even get stated on enjoyment, cause as we all know, division by 0 has serious consequences:

But it’s not an MMORPG. It’s much cheaper to make without a giant open world. Without any story to speak of. I compare MMOs to MMOs, because the people who make them have the same issues to deal with as each other. The people who make other games have different issues to deal with.
If it costs me $5 to make a movie and someone else $1 million, the million dollar movie has to make more money. It’s standard business.
League of Legends is in many ways a much simpler game. It’s nice that you like it. But then, there’s not a whole lot of PvE, and some of us are PvE’ers.

If you watch the forum enough, you’ll find that many people try to use the term ‘white knights’ to imply blind devotion. It doesn’t necessarily apply. By bringing up white knights in a forum where it’s become a means to discredit, it only adds fuel to the fire.
When someone posts an opinion that the forum is more fun right now, it’s really not helpful to the game in any way. If you go to any game, near the launch of an expansion, you’re going to find bored people. Next time you have a chance and the WoW expansion is going to come out, go to their forums a couple of months earlier. Or any forum, where the content is unchanged for a while.
You’ll find the same sorts of posts here. Sure, we’re not getting massive amounts of new content and when that happens, you’ll have done everything.
Many people who play WoW take a break for months at a time until the new expansion comes out, when they buy it and again pay a sub until they’ve finished all the content. It’s just business as usual in the MMO world.
I’m going to respond to some things but no need to quote everyone. For those that do not feel the expansion will be worth $50, you can do what I might consider doing and just wait until the expansion is put on sale later on since Anet will put it on sale a few times each year after it’s been released for at least 6 month or longer, maybe even sooner than that if the expansion doesn’t sell as well as they hope it will initially.
I don’t mind spending money on a game but personally I can’t see $50 for an expansion ever. I know this will including any and all future updates for the expansion over the upcoming years but at first I just can’t see an expansion being worth $50. This past year, I have been playing a variety of games rather than wasting away countless hours on one single game so if it’s several months before the price goes down then I’m fine with that.
The whole routine of wanting to have it all asap, immediately, first etc is just such a chore more so than fun. I pre-ordered the original game so I was on it before release and on the day of release but there’s really no reason to be in a rush to have anything on this game. I always felt this game was designed more so for story telling and open world adventures since it’s always been easy to get gear.
The gear grind in other MMOs is what sucks up most of our time but that’s never been an issue for me with GW2. When the expansion releases, I’ll see what people say about it but most likely I’ll wait for the price to come down because no expansion is worth almost the cost of the entire base game itself.
… it only adds fuel to the fire.
I think its not against you, but anet who dont answer to our complaints. We are supposed to buy, but dont know exactly what. the game has tons of bugs and we complain. the so called white knights defend every of anets steps. this might be the reason. i dont know but this makes the forum a forum. in every game.

All Anet did is put an item up for sale. They didn’t say you must buy this at this second. More info is coming. So wait and decide when it comes.
People try to equate putting a game up for sale with telling people they must buy it now. That’s not really the case.
Now if Anet doesn’t do the deep delves on difficult content and release information on how much content before the deadline for prepurchase, than I’d say that there’d be more of a reason to say something.
Right now, it’s obvious there’s enough info for some of us and not others.

yes, they did only that with much advertising and a price. naturally we ask what we get. with no answer.

Well, the thing is, Anet has always released info in this way. They time and stagger announcements and if you don’t know it by now, you should…everyone who’s been around should. They’re not going to talk about something before they’re ready to announce it. There are a lot of reasons for this, some of them more valid than others, but it’s still done for a reason.
So saying they haven’t answered, when no one should have expected an answer is sort of odd to me.
I think they could give us more info – you dont.
> two opinions and a dead end now.
btw I love the game. after ten years of playing I want to do so.
Fight the queens
But you know what… in addition to that extra character slot we also have something they’ll never have… up to three years of GW2 out of the gate.
Most of which was temporary content, and the rest of which can be unlocked through the gem store by new players as well.
Put a price, if you can, on that alone.
Yes.
Anet already put a price on it for us. You can unlock previous chapters of the Living Story through the gem store.
Have you had fun? Got your money’s worth? If it’s been worth it to you so far then who gives a flying monkey’s left buttcheek what new people get? We’re getting the expansion plus an extra character slot (or two, depending…).
We are NOT getting the extra character slot. It isn’t included with HOT as far as we know. You ONLY get it if you register the game before launch, but it isn’t actually included with the expansion. Don’t let yourself be deceived by marketing so easily.
Besides, this whole discussion was never about what new players get. It’s about a small expansion being priced as a full game, with the full game supposedly included for free. Anet has not accounted yet for the super inflated price tag. And thus the consumers (thats us), not veterans, not elitists, not entitled players, but us the consumers… we look at the price tag and think: If the base game is included for free for new players, then why are we paying the price of a full game, for a small expansion?
No expansions are truly as big as the core game. Hell, games like WoW charged a crapload more for their expansions if you think about it…
So just because some companies exploit their customers MORE, we should not criticize companies that exploit their customers to a smaller degree?
Seriously, do you work for their marketing department or something?
you need to remember that we are paying for not only everything that we have seen, but also a ton of things we have yet to see. This includes the next few seasons of living world.
What?!
We’re not supposed to be paying for the living story and updates at all! We’re paying for the expansion, and that’s it. The living story and updates are supposed to be free.
a) yes.
a) no, not unless you are, unless someone is. Without at least an intended victim, there is no case of swindle. Please tell me a case of swindle without the intent of victimizing someone by it. Analogykittenfailing badly here.
Allow me to correct you. Take this example:
A company tries to swindle 3 people. Only one person falls for it, the other two recognize it as such. Is it a swindle? Yes it is. Is it a swindle to all three of the persons involved? Yes it is. Now replace the company with Anet, and the audience with all of us. A swindle is still a swindle, regardless if someone falls for it or not.

Thats for sure lol
The only misinforming people here are the usual suspects spouting of marketing hype like it´s gospel.
My information is DIRECTLY from ANet as I´ve eagerly watched the videos of every beta event, which showed different parts of the same map.
Heck, the last one even had the center part impassable, as it was “the heart of the jungle”.Here´s a little life lesson for you fan-atics.
When somebody is selling you something, but won´t show you the whole deal.
Odds are good you´re gona get taken for a ride. But don´t take my word for it, just wait till you´ve seen the finished product.
Oh well.
Too late for some, you´ve already per-ordered. Might you even be in this thread accusing me of lying? Who knows?
When I was in the closed Beta (and the open after) we barely got a sniff at the full content available. That’s just how ANet is… if they don’t think it’s fully ready we’re not going to get much information on it, if any at all.
Hell… I was one of the people that discovered sit-jumping. Man… I miss that “feature”. It was fun.
Wooden Patatoes has a made a very good summary about HOT and what we know about it on his channel. Check it out:

I would like to see all the specialisations before I buy HoT. Might not buy it if the Tempest is as bad as the Dragonhunter.

I think you will find that answer in any of numerous thread dealing with this issue.
Good luck.
Still comparing b2p with p2p? I though this was sorted out already.

Why do you not compare it with SWTOR also. People do not have to pay 1 years of subscription they could pay only 1 month and in some cases its a option of the expansion to have 1 month of subscription included. Was there not a study that showed a increase in the number of subscribers during expansions and then drop sharply after the first few months?
