Factions and Nightfall were full Campaigns not expansions.
1 or more new races
- 5+ new dungeons
- several new pvp/rvr maps
- several new game modes
Factions had no new races, no new dungeons, a couple few pvp maps, 3 new game modes, but two of them had a single map. Also a HUGE but EMPTY continent that you had no reason to get back to once you’ve done it once.
Only a couple of zones served a purpose, as is the normal with all MMRPGs out there. I don’t want huge continents, I want fewer, but packed full with content maps in the expansion. I’ll take a couple of zones like Dry Top and Silverwastes over three times more zones like Brisban Wildlands any time of the day.

It’s not cause they can be played without having the base game that they aren’t expansions… they work on same engine, sync with eachother and continue on the same lore. That’s pretty much an expansion, even if you call it a “campaign”.
Also, sorry to offend all your dreams, oh almighty fanboi community. /sarcasm
I listed what I normally view as an expansion, based on previous experience, I am not asking you to accept that, but for god’s sake HoT looks like a regular, and pretty low content, patch.

If you can’t see the difference between an MMORPG expansion and a CORPG campaign, I doubt people will actually take your opinions seriously which maybe the reason as to why many disagree with you ^^
This expansion feels like your paying for hybrid between a WOW content Patch and actual Expansion however this feels like its leaning way to close to the Content Patch, the new zone/ area(s?) are essentaily raid/daily zones for this game due to the lack of instanced raids and no mention of new 5man dungeons.
That’s more ‘It doesn’t include content I specifically want, so it’s clealry not an expansion’.
Considering ANet has only released an “announcement”, along with a fraction of the features that they guarantee will be available with the expansion, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
They announced it. They didn’t reveal everything, because that’d kill the suspense, and they probably aren’t far enough along to do so, but they did reveal some promising news. That being said, stop comparing GW1 to GW2, when the few things that connect the two games are confined to lore, and then some. This is not Blizzard, stop expecting new races, new level cap, etc.
Speculate? Sure, but don’t form your own conclusions when we realistically don’t know all that much. Wait for some facts before you start complaining.
It’s a little premature to claim it’s a small expansion without seeing the content.
Colin has already stated in the Pax announcement we are getting one region comprised of three layers. Playable content wise, the release will be small.
You don’t know what the content is. You can’t make this assumption. You’re “Jump to conclusions” mat needs more options.

then nothing is real exp for ya by size cause by this listing you provided very low amount of mmos if any provides everything of stuff you listed
also sorry to dissapoint you but I cannot aggre that nightfall and faction were expansions
why?
expansion as name suggest is “expanding” “something”
word “expanding” means that it clearly add stuff
and you know where the hole is?
when you are adding stuff then you have access to everything
so if such faction was an expansion you should have access in it to ALL skills available in Prophecy – “the base”
same with nightfall – with owning nightfall itself you should have access to all skills provided by both earlier releases – assuming it was truely expansion
but sadly I have inforr you there they were numerous skills that you didn’t have access to withoot owning specificaly prophecy campaign or faction campaign or nightfall

To be honest, that was my first impression as well. “Way too small to be called an expansion. They’re just curbing the appetite of those rampant for an ‘expansion.’” But I’ll wait for more updates before I stick to that opinion.
You never know.
Another thing for people to keep in mind is that they should take the announcements as guaranteed to be in the xpac at launch. Weren’t there lore books and a couple other things that had been talked about for GW2 that got axed before launch?
Also after 10 years of Warcraft I have learned never to expect every feature initially announced to be in the final expansion and to expect at least one thing to get cut or delayed. So yeah more reason why this feels too small to be an expansion to me.
Good point, Nyres. Yes, it seems, with Blizzard at least, they cut something from their announced items. Guess we’ll see if ANet does the same.

Not by Anet’s definitions. Factions and Nightfall were stand-alone releases. Stand alone games. EotN was the only real expansion.
You could buy only 1 of all three Prophecies, Factions, or Nightfall and play them independently.
To be honest, that was my first impression as well. “Way too small to be called an expansion. They’re just curbing the appetite of those rampant for an ‘expansion.’” But I’ll wait for more updates before I stick to that opinion.
You never know.
As someone who have always been against the expansion and who spoke against them for weeks on these same forums, your opinion is probably highly influenced by your preference that GW2 should be run by Living Story alone and therefore you will surely be against the idea of an expansion whatever the expansion will include.
They need to release more information.. Otherwise the expansion is going to seem small and the playerbase will become increasingly pessimistic
I like the expansion as it has been described. I feel that the PvP and WvW enhancements alone will add an exciting and worthwhile level of complexity that I have been wishing for; "not to mention* the rest of the new layers. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised by the scope of the upgrade. The mastery system is intriguing to say the least. I will definitely play the new profession and look forward to the upgrade.
Guild Wars 2 has the graphics, the sound, the builds, the fighting action, the world.. but its launch could only offer a basic layer of complexity. The kinks are mostly all solved. Adding strategy elements that fit well with the existing landscape and engineering a richer and more complex fighting environment is going to hold my interest and, I predict, bring many many new players to the game.
Looking forward!!

Factions and Nightfall were stand alone titles that did not require the core game to play them. Therefore NOT an expansion.
Eye of the North required one of the game titles to play and was not a stand alone title and therefore an EXPANSION of the game.

At no point was I ever against an expansion. I said, according to the developers, none was coming down the path anytime soon. That said, please discuss the topic. Not me.
Thank you.

New Zone
New Class
Class Specializations
Guild Halls
New PvP Mode
New Weapons
New Skills
Masteries
New Legendaries
Surely this topic is a bad joke?
^ Again, you seem to have all the details. Enlighten me.
Why do people keep saying 1 zone? Like wtf…
From this interview:
Colin Johanson says: “From an environment standpoint, this is the largest amount of vertical space we have ever built in the game. Our map spans huge distances up in the air. We are actually able to climb to the very top of the jungle and look down on everyone below. We’re adding hang gliding, so you won’t have to fall to your death every time. We’re adding a lot of abilities that will take advantage of the amount of 3D space that we’ll make use of as part of these adventures in the jungle.”

No, there will be beta events.
I don’t want to join in the blind bashing or defending here, but we have been told things such as how many new zones will be released and how many specialisations each class will have. For an expansion, this really does look to be on the small side of things – really small. If the quality makes up for the quantity, then that’s absolutely fine… but we’ve had some very questionable updates over the years.
That’s why I’m skeptical. If the price matches the value I’ll definitely buy, If not, I’ll wait for a sale.

And again:
We were maybe intentionally vague when we didn’t talk about what types of content you’re going to experience specifically in the jungle, but the most important messages we want people to take from today are that you’re going to be able to explore a new area, and we know that Guild Wars 2 needs more challenging encounters and more challenging group encounters, and it needs extremely challenging encounters for groups to build up to and defeat. We’re going to be providing all of that with our Heart of Thorns experience.

Realize I would love to be proved wrong and hope intensely that Colin is just using the wrong words here.
What is being given(based on what colin calls major features) in this expansion is somewhat similar to what we have been getting in feature updates and very small.
One new profession. NO new race. No new dungeons.(we got fractals for free!) Another region comprised of at least 3 maps(southsun cove, silverwastes, dry top, all free.)
Specializations( only one weapon added to each profession and not giving universal weapon usage amongst all professions.)
Guild Halls, should have been in the game at launch. Stronghold , same thing.
CORE GW1 was released with so many of these features plus TEMPLATES!
I say expansion is too big of a word for this.
I would rather call this
" If you don’t buy it you will be left behind." I will buy it of course but it just doesn’t feel right to call this small DLC that could have been free an expansion.Apparently the sales in China did not make any profit for Anet to keep the dream alive.
Really feels like I am paying for a fix. A reason why I didn’t buy Diablo 3 expansion.
Wait lets call it Paid Living Story
You know literately nothing about the actual amount of content (like all of us), and you are slating it already. That’s logic for ya. I’ll judge it based on what actually ships – not my imaginations and dreams of what I think it is.
On top of that, they said a way to acquire precursors by playing the game was coming years ago. Hopefully, people that don’t buy the x-pac will still be able to use the new system to make them.
Probably not. In the latest MMORPG interview, he said the new Precursors will be like the Bioluminescent Armour – rewards for collections. Some parts of the collections will no doubt be in the new zones, and if you haven’t purchased the expansion you likely can’t go there, so wont be able to complete the collections. But I guess they could also be a random drop as well? We’ll see I guess.

The World Map is also a map, is it not? We need to wait for more info.
Also, I wonder if the maps are layered, each layer could be considered a map? Would it be any different if each layer was separated and placed side by side? Perhaps they have taken multiple maps, and stacked them. Like taking all the ascalon maps and putting them on top of each other. That would make it look much smaller. But like I said, we need more info.
From what I heard, Arenanet and GW1 were made by people who initially worked for Blizzard but were let go. After GW1 grew in popularity, all but 2 went crawling back to Blizzard…. So….
Arenanet is not Blizzard who is the only company that has the resources to add a new class and a new race and a new area for it and new skills and new stories and another area besides that in one expansion. It sucks but when you are small you do small things.
As a matter of fact ANet was not only capable of adding new zones to the game but it used to be able to add whole new continents with every GW1 expansion. Elona and Cantha were huge while still providing access to a bunch of new skills, two new professions for every campaign (four in total), vast number of new PvP modes (Fort Aspenwood) and elite dungeons etc. etc.
So you see ANet used to be way above everything Blizzard ever did. What happened, well… I don’t think that’s something we will ever find out.
Its good still cool.. me n my husband will buy when it comes out.
Very curious about gvg. Would love to see HA or similar pvp game play

i really wish gw2 would be so dissapointing that people like the op would leave and just go somewhere else. but reality is gw2 must be really good when people with so much negativity stick to it
This infuriates me as well – just go if you don’t like the game, don’t continually complain about everything while staying.
To be honest, I think this expansion will be great. I was just really hoping for Elona or Cantha. Feeling the urge to go see my good pal Palawa Joko.
Well, OP might be right about no new dungeons. At least that’s what i gathered from interview for MMORPG.com. Plus that “map” from another interview is peculiar. Maybe Colin just misspoke, or do they really going into expansion with a single map in it? Lol, hard to believe, but who knows really, they’re very vague, as always, dodging every question as hard as they can. Business as usual.
As i suspected masteries gonna be an analogue to GW1’s faction/reputation PvE skills, where you needed to grind certain content of the game to get those skills, and then more grind to make them powerful enough for you to use em then in another content, some elite area. In GW1 it was, i.e., Lightbringer skills for DoA, or Norn skills for UW etc. Is it exciting or not, decide for yourself, i personally always thought it was boring crap back in GW1, but here it’s gonna depend on how it will be implemented, through what kind of content etc.
This thread is comedy.
Based on a few sentences roughly sketching the major topics covered in HoT and a 3 minute trailer you SERIOUSLY argue whether this is too small for an expansion?!?
It’s like arguing whether some pastry tastes sweet, sour or bitter just because you have seen a single black and white pencil drawing of it.
Is it really so complicated to just simply wait until you have enough information to at least perform an educated guess?

Why is this an issue for you now?
Considering ANet has only released an “announcement”, along with a fraction of the features that they guarantee will be available with the expansion, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
They were very specific, they have listed every major feature of the expansion. They have left nothing out.
We don’t know how many maps they will include in the expansion…
We already know its 1 new map

1 of the top of my head VERY important thing they are addressing is the new trait system, did they mention that? NOPE. They confirmed this on the forum.

1 map… many zones
We want to know how many maps, areas, zones (or whatever you like to call them) we are going to get with the expansion.
It’s simple.
We don’t know how many maps they will include in the expansion…
We already know its 1 new map
1 map… many zones
1 region… many maps?
First of all considering that a races in this game have their own zone, city and story we are not gonna have a new race in this game. Arenanet is not Blizzard who is the only company that has the resources to add a new class and a new race and a new area for it and new skills and new stories and another area besides that in one expansion. It sucks but when you are small you do small things.
This post is so ignorant that I’m not even mad; it’s amazing. Yeah, ArenaNet is not Blizzard (thank god for that!) so they surely could not release new classes and new races and new areas – Nightfall and Factions are illusions, everyone, those did not ever exist and we never played them! What’s that, you say, they even came with tons of new skills for the existing classes? Lies, all lies I tell you!
Well, granted, they did not have new races since in GW1 you could only play as human, but you got to play with africans and asians, which was pretty cool.
@poster – plz go back to WoW kthxbye!
More on topic, HoT seems small because they have shown us so very little. IMO, and this is just a guess, we will get at least 4-6 new maps which will each have 3 levels. And they did mention they completely changed the content of these maps as opposed to the current maps, so this could be an epic win. ANet has shown us that they learn from past experiences (even though not always, sadly) and I am actually hopeful for this expansion.
Too big or too small, it all hangs in the balance… of the price tag.
If its only 3-4-5 new zones and 1 new profession I probably wouldn’t buy it for 49 euros, but 30 seems about right.
Now if it is 6-7-8 new zones, 1 new profession and all the other new content, I’d probably pay 60.

First off, I agree with most of the comments here that OP is jumping the gun here. Heart of Maguuma will almost certainly be a new region with multiple zones and the rest of the features (subject to what challenging group content actually means) sound comparable to what you’d expect from expansions in other games.
I have one bugbear from this thread though. Sure, Factions and Nightfall were technically stand-alone campaigns rather than expansions, but so what? If you already owned GW and chose to link the new campaign to your account, which is what most people did, it would then function exactly the same as an expansion.
The fact that those expansions (yes I used that word intentionally) had the additional feature that they could be played without linking to the original game doesn’t mean we can’t cite them for comparison or should somehow expect less of HoT because of it.
