Q:

Since all of the Living Story patches we’ve seen so far have been temporary content, to be deleted within the month, what do you think about it?

Personally I think it would be a lot better to keep the content, so new players can still complete them all. Mind you, I have been playing since the start, but most of the Living Story is a grind and not worth doing. The only fun parts so far were dungeons.
Imho they should keep the dungeons in-game and release new dungeon armour related with it! We’re all horribly tired of AC, CoF, CoE, Arah, TA, HotW & SE.

Leave these new dungeons in-game, and make them repeatable content that rewards new dungeon armour and weapons.

A:

All of this forum discussion plus discussions with my gaming friends have led to the following conclusions:

1. Some of the content isn’t really “new”, fun, or engaging. It is kill 150 to 300 rats. Click on 50 to 150 clicky things. Or do some other repetitious thing. Those are completed in a not too long amount of time but are busy work and having new rats or clickies every two weeks or month isn’t exciting. So why do it? To complete a check off task in the achievement tab or to get a reward you want. But is it fun? I guess that depends on what you find fun. I don’t mind having those for yearly holiday quests but I really don’t want constant kill more rats and click on more clickie tasks every 2 weeks or even once a month.

2. Some of the content is fun and engaging to us. The Molten Facility dungeon, the crab toss, SAB, dragonball bash (minigames in general), the disgruntled settler farming, and the story lines and instances (Rox, Braham, others). We (my gaming friends and I) are happy that some of these “probably” will return and annoyed that others won’t return. Given that we have jobs, and some are on a “work long hours for a couple of weeks then off a few days” type job schedule, we see only frustration in our future here. We want to experience the stories.

3. Deadlines, temporary content, and most of all unique rewards coupled with temporary rng are frustrating to us. We especially don’t like temporary rewards coupled with rng based on buying chests from the gem store. One of my friends dubbed the game “Casino Wars” and quit playing it.

4. Bugs are more frustrating when the content is temporary. You already feel pressured for time and now a bug is there. With regular content you can wait it out. With temporary content it is way more noticeable and irritating.

Why am I posting this? Because my group of friends and I played GW1 for years and eagerly awaited GW2. We want to keep playing it and are hoping that it won’t change in a direction that we just won’t play. There are things I absolutely love about the game.
I love the active combat, the looks of the game, WvW, and lots of other things about the game. I just don’t like how the story content is currently being added then removed from the game. I hope that part changes.

It’s a kitten conspiracy. Kittens gonna be kittens. All is vain!

I 100% agree, I don’t really see the point of removing the dungeons. I means new players don’t feel like they’ve missed out on content for being late and you arn’t punished for having a few months break.
Could you imagine if WoW removed the raids from the previous expansion because it’s no longer ‘present day’? Would be stupid.

I think the best thing to do would be to create an in-game device that will allow you to relive past events while still being able to treat them as “past” events. Maybe the asura could make a time machine or memory projector.

I fear temporary contents, time-limited achievements and stories that you will never ever live on your characters (I had to stop playing 5 months ago, so imagine how much I missed) confuse the game for casual players and newbie.
I’d like to recollect all the quests and the achievements i could not earn (I don’t mind the gear, I mean..I wasn’t there, so let the gear to the ones played the contents on the right time) also because, at the moment, I have no idea what’s going on on Kryta.
I hope Anet will give us the possibility to catch up with the old stories, i’d be very glad to try out the Southsun Cove saga.
I think also that, in this way, who missed some important event is not encouraged to keep playing just because the events in the game aren’t felt as “past”, but just as something incoherent to read on the wiki.
At least, this is happening to me; I can’t check out the living story in its entirety so I’m unwilling to continue, since I feel my experience incomplete.

Now that I think about it; I’d much prefer they keep the content. What was great about GW1 (or any other game for that matter) is that I could go back and replay all the missions, figure out the storyline better, and immerse myself into the story more. More immersion means I’ll be excited for new content, and want to keep playing.

Removing Living World content means that new people will miss out on story; miss out on the Guild Wars universe. It creates larger gaps for them to have to fill in outside of the game, which makes it more difficult to get that immersion. I wouldn’t blame anyone new for quitting because they don’t know what’s going on.

That being said, Anet needs to make the stories in GW2 something we care about. To be honest, I didn’t care about killing Zhaitan, I’m not a one person army, let the armies of Tyria figure it out. Same with Southsun, I don’t care about some “resort” island for the rich, let the Lion Guard take care of it. Flame and Frost: again, I didn’t care, I’m not a one person army.

Sky Pirates of Tyria does, however, have me curious, as long as Anet does it right. I can help an investigation. I can, potentially, infiltrate a group of pirates. I can, potentially, take a small group of people with me to take out a group of pirate leaders.

Until Anet gives me a compelling story to discover, you’ll find me in WvW.

My problem with this temporary content is the usually general lack of content and also the fact that most of the time nothing is permanent. I would’ve loved for the molten alliance dungeon to have stayed I liked that dungeon it was fun. Dragonball is fun to play every now and then I see no reason they can’t keep that around I mean they are keeping moa racing. And from the sounds of things the new armors are can’t be a stupid gem shop purchase hopefully you can get some way from a drop or lootable RNG box I don’t see why they don’t introduce a new material with the new mob that you can use to craft the new armor and weapon instead of going and making everything RNG or gem purchases. Adding the new meta was nice but sadly no one seems to be doing it I guess because coordinating the capture and maintaining of the camps was too annoying.

Well, I have stated before, I don’t enjoy the living content much. The fact that it is temporary is a pain. I have other things to do, a life to live… can’t always go chacing living content in its time period. Though I understand that it does make it progressive and “living”. Whether that is good or bad, I still don’t really enjoy it. It rushes me, and that annoys me.

I’d prefer permanent content, even if that meant we didn’t see it as often. I didn’t pick up GW2 at release, only discovering it recently, and while I love it, I feel as though I’ve missed out on so much and the chance to achieve a lot of things. Maybe one day down the line I’d have liked a chance to pick up X achievement or see X happening or collect X skin. It’s not a huge deal, but just a preference. While I’m glad we have this instead of a steady level cap increase or gear grind, I still feel that by only having temporary content, I’m still missing out in a way because I didn’t start at release and have a level 80 character within a month.

I definitely prefer permanent content. Stuff like the world dynamic events (like the F&F portals and such), or the hologram/door/present things should be temporary but each patch should be mostly permanent. Especially the dungeons. Even if they are kinda forgotten after a bit, at least those of us that want to play them again could, if they were permanent, as well as keep the same rewards (RNG rewards anyways, like the jetpack/mini).
I know I’m getting tired of all this temporary content, especially big content like the dungeons (which we only ever get for 2 weeks max, which is bullkitten to me).

If they make it all permanent we are limiting the possibilities of newer better contents. THERE is a limit to content on map y’know? just imagine every map has atleast 1 living story in it with dynamics and all the stuff that is going on.. server would just crash if they keep supplying without taking them away; just a massive overload..

for the items available to the living story it would be nice to have 1 easily attained item that is temporary so reward people from being there. The rest of the items you can get can go into a library of Ca$h eitems. yes make a library

Personally I understand that they meant living story as a way to show how the world is moving on, and that things aren’t really static. It also gives players periodically new content to enjoy. I get that. The problem is really that in the end its a means of trying to persuade players to keep playing the game. Yes, it is not compulsory but having been absent and missed some of these content (and its unique rewards) players will feel missed out. I know I did for the Halloween and Lost Shores event. It doesn’t affect stats of my toons, sure, but i do feel slightly unhappy at not having obtained some of its rewards. So to that end, I’d rather have permanent content. I love this game, I will return to it as often as i can, but work and RL stuff does come in so its nice if i can try out and get the rewards for contents at my own leisure.

Why not turn each non-holiday living story event into a fractal to add to FOTM? Since each fractal is based off a period in history anyway. It would add more variety to FOTM, keep the content engaging and it would be permanent (in a way). They could even put in a small chance of getting a ticket for past weapon skins as a drop in the particular fractal associated with the living world event.

All the dungeons I’ve done since I’ve started. Molten Facility was decent…I was almost able to solo it until the mobs started wandering away from me back into that chill field thing and regenning when I was still hitting them. That’s a general AI issue in the game though, so I can’t blame the dungeon on that. So yeah, never finished that one so I can’t say for sure how the second half of it went.

I’m a little bummed right now, as I thought the Southsun Cove stuff and the Flame and Frost stuff would be permanent. I have only been playing a couple of months, so I was still just trying to learn how to play, and assumed that I kind of needed to finish the story before I started any of that, except now I find out I basically missed it all. That sucks. Not to mention it does technically up level you from what I have done on this new Dragon bash living story thing, but if you’re level 10 its not like you can hang if you are upleveled to 80 – My gear still sucks and I have no skills to use. Kind of pointless to even try any of that unless you are 80. I played a little of the Southsun Cove stuff, but I guess that is gone now.

I cant stand temporary content personally, I just started playing this month so I have missed out on a lot of content and have NO WAY to go back to it at all. I don’t see why they cant make the events smaller after a period of time or in only some areas with lower loot chances on the special items so that players can go back to experience the content and get the achievements.

I find it ridiculous to add content only to then completely remove it a month later.

Give us some way to go back and relive old story events! Adding them to fractals that allow you to experience the full event and receive all the achievements and full experience or periodically rerunning the events.

Guys… seriously you should keep an eye on the other threads in the forums or at least for the Dev Tracker one. This topic has been discussed countless of times, I hope this helps to give you guys some information/relief for the time being (since you know, there is no ETA for this):

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/lwd/The-Historian-for-people-who-missed-content/first

Here someone proposed the idea of having a Historian so that new players can do the previous dungeons, to which Colin replied: In the future, you’ll see certain types of content that was part of larger story experiences be updated to work within the fractals dungeon and return there where it makes sense to do so.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/dungeons/What-happened-with-phase-2-of-dungeons/page/2

And just in case I’m adding this one since he comments about the dungeons updates/reward system: We’ll be continuing to permanently update our dungeons and rewards for dungeons this year and beyond, these updates will be part of living world releases in the future as well as we expand the scope of living world releases to include more permanent updates to the game.

So… seems like we will just have to wait. To give my point of view about this temporary content, I like it because they can use them to get feedback about the dungeons, which in the future will mean updates to the current ones and a better living story. If something goes wrong (like Southsun) they don’t have to worry about it because it won’t be permanent, they can learn from what happened there and improve.

Phew, tl;dr, yes some of the previous content will be coming back, seems like as part of a fractal dungeon.

P.D. I’m aware this thread was to know each other’s thoughts, but well most are concerned about not being able to play the previous dungeons. Oh and I’m not a Colin stalker >.<

I get your point and I assure you that I would also like to have all this content permanent, with something like the Scrying Pool from GW1 which was used to access the previously done missions. But still this is part of the “Living Story”, we can’t have everything stay.

It would be weird that after beating the Molten Alliance their facilities and sonic periscopes would still be around. Supposedly this is used to make the open world more dynamic, with the events making changes in the zones… Sadly I don’t think new players will be able experience all the previous chapters…

I have a hard time believing that they cant find a way to implement it so that players can experience the full gamete of past events when we have inter dimensional wars “WvW”, time travel “Fractals”, and then just some groups being able to rebuild them selves. =P

There is always a way that can make sense, the question is can we fight for it hard enough.

I once loved the idea of the ‘Living Story’ but I absolutely despise it now. I played for about 3 months, got the two back pieces from Southsun and haven’t logged on since.

I don’t care why crabs are attacking sunbathers.
I don’t care that some random NPC was killed by another random NPC in Lion’s Arch.
I don’t care that some silly, generic pirates decided to show up out of nowhere only to do absolutely nothing.

What I do care about is me.
I want me (the player) to be the center of the storyline.
I want the player to feel more important and more powerful than the NPCs.
I want the player involved in epic story arcs rather than hunting for seafood at a resort or attempting to solve minor murder mysteries (which are completely spoiled by GW2’s facebook page).

Above all, I want content that sticks around. There’s no point in doing content that will be deleted a week later. It’s a waste of ANet’s time and resources. I would rather not even log on than to be forced to adhere to a gaming schedule.

Temporary content should lead to some permanent content. There’s not much point to a living world where nothing that happens actually impacts the world long-term. A good example was the Southsun stuff leading to a new permanent meta-event on the island.

Longer-term rewards would be nice, too. A lot of the achievements are so grindy that they’re not very friendly for the casual player who can’t grind out the event for the full X amount of weeks it runs. My misgivings about RNG aside, the jade weapon skins were gorgeous and it’s frustrating that they will shortly be off limits, even to people who have opened thousands of boxes without any luck.

I have mixed views on this. On the one hand I love that the game is getting updates and adds life and newness so often. On the other hand the additions go away after a few weeks, effectively resetting the game back to what it was before. It’s like you have a taste of what can be done then the giant reset button is hit and everything goes back to how it was. There is no acknowledgement of the previous aspect of the living story ever again.

Kiel recently says “well if it isn’t my old friend…” but beyond that….? The constant updates are amazing – and free. I love that. The loss of those updates and therefore the associated lack of urgency or even, the lack of caring that they bring makes it feel redundant. What I mean by that is, you know the new content will be gone soon. You know that the NPCs won’t have any knowledge of the previous events. So what incentive (apart from the immediate achievements/rewards) is there to care about what is happening? There is no emotional investment in the living story. It is purely to get a few extra achievements and maybe some rewards in the form of skins and mini pets.

It doesn’t progress your character at all. There is not sense that your character makes a difference in the world.

Small, incremental updates are amazingly wonderful. Permanent and genuine world changing content would be even better. Something that actually had an impact on the character you play. Something that made you feel there was more happening than merely filler for achievements. Something that will be remembered by the NPCs you interact with.

I get that many won’t agree with me, that’s fine. We are all different after all. I can respect that some people thrive on this. Me? I’m not finding the joy in the whole living story concept. On that note. Can the next update, not involve pirates, crabs or zombies? There is more to Tyria than that.

Not really a fan of it myself. I tend to be pretty on and off player. I play quite a lot for a month or so and then I’ll have study or some new games or just not feel like playing and stop for a few months and then get back to playing.
But come back after a few months and there isn’t anything thing new to do. Of course there WAS new content but they’ve already removed it so I can’t play it.
I think they should make the dungeons and story instances repeatable. Maybe have something like they scrying pool in eye of the north or an npc to re activate them so they don’t clutter the map.
Having temporary flavor stuff around the open maps when the event is current is cool though.

They want this to be like a tv show. Except more like the 1960s and earlier british ones where they junked the originals so no one could ever watch them again. Just think about how happy all the Doctor Who fans are that huge chunks of the first several seasons are gone forever! I mean, what market is there for watching a show that was aired last year (cough, netflix)… The tv comparison is so apt.

I am really disappointed by the complaining people are doing regarding this. And it’s saddening because no matter what ANet seems to do at the moment people kitten and whine like there’s no tomorrow.

Only thing regarding temporary content is that, I am reluctant to take any kind of break because I do like to do everything, and don’t want to risk missing something I might really want.

As long as they keep up the pace they have set in early 2013 and we keep getting things like the AR and F&F dungeons and Southsun meta events, I’m very happy with how they are doing the living story/temporary content – and will be even happier if some of these encounters, bosses, etc. return as fractals, guild bounties, new dungeon paths, etc.

In an ideal world, everything would be permanent (obviously). Keeping those things going indefinitely, however, requires resources (obviously). I like that the developers seem to be focusing their resources on keeping fresh content rolling into the game instead – even if it means that fresh content is temporary.

Really the living story is nothing more the dungeons or finding items for an achievement. My only real problem is that instead of taking a good long time to work on a story and let us enjoy some down time they kind pumping out events.

This is only my point of view so please understand I consider the living story nothing more then events. Mostly due to the fact it has nothing to do with us fighting a new elder dragon.

Personally, I have found the Living World to be a bore. Grind this or that, plus a temporary dungeon (for the most part), then take it away, rinse and repeat feels cookie-cutter to me. What I would like to see are changes and additions to existing content to make them seem more “real”. I think it would be fun to have the existing original dungeons subtly change over time.

Well, I think everything I’d say has been said, but..

I think the dungeons should stay, or have a means to visit them again. There are also certain things like the Molten Pickaxe and Consortium Sickle that I so wish there was another way to obtain, or at least still be in the Gem Store. I feel really bad wanting to make new characters and hardly use them because I like to use my characters that have those already.

I can understand some things not staying, but really, it just feels like once the previous parts are over, they’re just forgotten..

Frost and Flame? The only things I care to remember are the Molten Pickaxe, that dungeon, and the Fused Gauntlets. Everything else was either annoying or forgettable. And I wanted some Fused weapons, but didn’t feel like using gold/money for keys.

Southsun Cove really wasn’t that great either. I did the 2 dungeon instances once each and never went back to them. The other acheivements weren’t hard to get, but I still didn’t care for most of them. I wanted some Sclerite weapons, but even with 200% magic find, the crates didn’t pop up much, only had materials, and the good farming spots seemed to be altered to be less useful. The only things that stayed were those buildings that were never finished, and a meta event chain that I doubt many want to do.

Dragon Bash feels even weaker to me than the previous Living Stories. We’re celebrating our struggle against the Elder Dragons..except we haven’t done anything against them since killing Zhaitan (and some things imply that he either isn’t quite dead or could come back).

The Jade weapon skins..I don’t really care for. They look okay and clearly had effort put into them, but they just don’t fit with much else here. I guess they’re meant to be an homage to Cantha (I never played GW1, so not certain), but what I’ve read on that seems to suggest that they were trying to make us forget about Cantha at the beginning, so feels whiplashy.. is that even a word?

Then a Council guy dies, we meet some new people, and then steampunk pirates from the sky!..I think. They wanted to get a spot on the Council for Lion’s Arch, but how would that help them? And the Inquest are helping them too, I guess. Not sure why anyone would work with the Inquest after that mess with the dredge. And the new dungeon is painful, tried twice and never went back.

Meh…all I’m looking forward to now is an unlimited logging axe to complete the set. Is that bad?

Sorry for this wall of text.. >.<

Had to add as I read some interesting stuff in the past posts. Someone said about having the new dungeon as permanent with added explorable modes. Especially given that there are already the 3 armor skins for them, it can function just like regular dungeons then. I do love this idea and would not fault it except tht i feel its unlikely devs will put it up this way. Sorry for being pessimistic, but i have to say, Gem store armor and FRIGGING rng weapon skins. The former is infinitely better method than the latter, (and ill repeat this a bazillion times over a bazillion threads if i have to) but even then, its worse choice than like normal dungeon rewards, but since it ties to…the option for them to make profit, i feel quite unlikely it will go that way.

If u need rng in this temporary content, keep the chances nice enough. 0.00001% or something like that, is not it. I dont mind as much for precursors because its NOT temporary. Additionally if you have the gem store options, keep RNG off it. Stop making real money gambling stuff here. I have to say it because im seeing those nice aetherblade weapons on mobs and im wondering if theyll give those out next but again would want to implement the much hated ridiculous RNG system on it

I mentioned before about doing stuff at my own time. I’d add that the trend seems to be going to more and more grindy stuff when it reached Dragon Bash (hundreds of zhaitaffys on top of hundreds of holo kills and on top of a hundred fireworks..really? seriously, REALLY?) but seems to have toned down slightly with aetherblades/sky pirates. (only one achieve exceeds a hundred i think). I fear it would return however, and people with limited time would either miss out or be forced to do those events and only those events. And yes, some people really do have limited time and some activities are time consuming here (dungeons, especially the new one and maybe..say.. Arah). Southsun event had it nice with achievements encouraging exploration, as is the cache achievements for sky pirates. I’d rather see more of this than do HUNDREDS of X kind of achievements.

Temporary content….meh, I only get to play casually sometimes and have missed out on a great deal of the content… it’s left me pretty disappointed… not to mention annoyed that I have all these achievements that I can now never get. It’s a shame though if I came back in a year there would be no new content…

I do hope they release packs on the gem store eventually to allow players to relive the events or even better integrate them into the world as permanent content.

The whole living story notion is a neat idea, but temporary content in general (other than holiday events or minor things) is rather ill-conceived. Putting in content only to yank it out a couple of weeks later is bad for the game. It results in tons of wasted development time and frustrates more players than it appeals to. It’s often so rushed too that the quality is hit or miss. Moreover, it’s internally inconsistent – all of the original dungeons have specifically themed stories surrounding them, yet none of them have been removed, why should any of the LS stuff?

What’s worse is that it gets the whole development of the game behind. After a full year of living story content, what does the game have to show for it? Existing and returning players will be put off by the fact that not much has changed and there isn’t much more in the game for them to play around with.

It was a pretty bad idea from the get go.

My concern is now i’m stuck with achievements i can never complete.

Can I ask you, would you rather see a new expansion that will take a few months to work on and will release a couple of new areas (+dungeons) at once, bring new classes, weapons and races to play with?

Well this sort of covers what they’ll try to do:

As Colin mentions in this post and this post, based upon community feedback, we are adjusting our strategy to include a larger mix of permanent updates in the future.

Just chiming in with my two cents. I agree, I would prefer if the Living Story was permanent content too. Obviously some things would need to go away—open world spawns like holos, for example—but story instances and dungeons could stay. Also the instances should be replayable per character, not per account.

In short, I wish Living Story worked more like Guild Wars Beyond in GW1. Honestly content that sticks around makes the world feel more “changed” to me than something that happens, then disappears, out of sight out of mind. War in Kryta and Winds of Change gave me more of a sense of time passing and history unfolding than any of the GW2 releases have yet.

I have really enjoyed all the releases so far, but just think how much more excited we would be for each chapter if we were getting not just new content, but new permanent content every two weeks!

This would be great for people who can play often—they have more content that’s always there to enjoy, like the challenging Aetherblade dungeon. It would also be good for those who don’t have as much playtime because the content would remain there for them to do at their own pace.

I’m happy to hear Anet is taking this feedback on board.

I like the living story and how the PvE world is evolving.I will link here what i posted in another thread.

Anet already made FotM where they can put all their new temporary dungeons. So If it was me i would make some kind of place just like FotM or ‘’Caverns of time’’ in WoW specifically for the living world story, where you can go back in time and use that place to turn the Temporary content into a Permanent one.

Basically when a temporary content comes it won’t disappear after 2 weeks but will be moved to a new instance where it will stay.Remove some achievements if you have to but to remove a content permanently on which you have worked very hard to make seems to me like a mistake.
