Best class for an asura?
Racial lore in no way restricts or suggests a profession.
How about a thief, since an asura has such great animations ( jumping, dodging, etc)?
I ONLY play a aura toons. I have every class and for me, the thief trumps the class. Also, LB Ranger animation can’t be topped. Worst animation feel is warrior…the scaling of weapons is terrible.
Nevermore raven cannot even been seen when most back items are equipped.
My two asura are a mesmer/chronomancer and a necro/reaper. The mesmer wears vivid colors and it’s great watching her two clones run in at enemies. Animations are fun, I think, but as I fight with my camera zoomed so far out a tall human man is about 2" high on the screen lest I get severe motion sickness, I’m not really seeing those. The necromancer doesn’t gel as well though his cry of “I’ve made LIFE! .. of a sort …” when raising a minion is fun. Likely that’s because even though I can’t see animation details at my combat scale, the mesmer has a lot more motion going on.
Both of them have a scientific approach to what they do. The mesmer specializes in manipulation of solid light fields, and the necromancer considers flesh a readily renewable resource though it degrades too quickly and he constantly seeks cybernetic augmentation for his minions to extend their shelf life. (Also, he’s not nearly as good at anything as he pretends to be, not even good at the pretending part, so rough and ready flesh manipulation gets him much further than attempting to work with delicate circuitry).
Lore wise, as DeanBB says, you can make any profession work. So pick a profession you enjoy playing long term, then reverse-engineer that to get an origin story to explain the career choice.
Any class, really. They’re evolution at its finest.
Despite their size theyre still strong enough to be warriors, but cant yet competenwith the norn and charr in strength. Their higher understanding of the arcane allows them better casters though.
Ingame mechanically speaking.. play a condi class. The waste container racial skill is one of the strongest racial skills and actually pretty useful in the personal story. Giving lotsmof conditions to many creatures. Wouldnt use racial skills in post-PS, though
By lore the three most prominent professions among asura are:
- Engineer – the obvious one, as asura are inventors. Coming up with sometimes nifty and useful, sometimes overly convoluted and sometimes straight malfunctioning machines and gadgets to get the upper hand over their opponent.
- Necromancer – Due to the deep research of Zinn on transferring souls to objects and bringing life to lifeless matter in the form of golems asura have quite a wide understanding of how life and death tie into the eternal alchemy, so much that some are willing to walk the brink between the worlds to get the insight they desire.
- Elementalist – The base foundation of the eternal alchemy are the four elements. Everything is made up from them and research on these wild energies is very dangerous. Years of training and many more years of supervision of a master are required to harmlessly utlitze the core powers of the world. But the payoff is huge.
Cheers

Won’t mesmer be a good additive to this list, since it taps into the arcane just as much as the elementalist?
By lore the three most prominent professions among asura are…
… unless you want to roleplay some sort of Inquest connection (double agent), and so choose thief or possibly Mesmer.
… unless you consider your character one of the countless protectors of all those idiot geniuses, and so choose warrior, guardian, or ranger.
“Asura” is an entire society, so anything works.
If you’re a Lore Junkie, it also bears mention that each of the three Colleges in Asura society carry different philosophies that might apply to your choice of Profession.
Statics: “Slow and steady wins the race. A careful and methodical approach is always preferable to creating on a whim, and we build to last.”
Synergetics: “Like, we need to have a greater Connection to the Eternal Alchemy and understanding of the nature of magic if we’re supposed to make progress, man.”
Dynamics: “MORE DAKKA! I made a gun shoots smaller guns, so it you shoot people while you shoot people!”
Other two: “Dynamics, no…”
Dynamics: “DYNAMICS YES!”
This has been a short demonstration of the three major philosophies found in Asura society.
Thief – Duelist | Ranger – Strider | Engineer – Technician |
Elementalist – Spellweaver | Necromancer – Warlock | Mesmer – Trickster |

I find that the Thief and the Elementalist animations for asura are far better than the other races, they are frantic and all over the place and generally a lot of fun to watch. I have a fondness for my asura ranger, as having my pet be as big as I am is amusing.
I do find that when you character create, making the character the tallest the slider will allow, helps with some of the problems of tiny armor and weapons. You end up being just a bit smaller than the smallest human and things don’t shrink down as badly.
Seriously, thanks a lot for the input guys. I hadn’t considered some of the issues you guys brought up (animations, scaling, etc). Are there any other issues I should consider?
This thread is the first mention of using a racial skill I’ve ever seen (and I wish they had done more with that.) Glad someone else looks at those lol.
The roleplay of the different colleges is definitely a good thought thanks for that. I can see that I can make anything work lorewise, so I guess at this point it boils down to mechanics, movement (they really do look like goofs, especially when they run or jump), and size issues (I love norn, but I have encountered size issues on that end of the spectrum as well). Further input appreciated, I’m still considering.
PS. Wow… so many asura lovers lol. XD
I personally love my Asura Revenant. But to each his own.
I find Mesmer fits well with any asura associated with the College of Synergetics.
Bonus points for taking the Infinity Ball personal story.
