For the specialties?
Would it break the game? Do you guys think it would be too much? Or add a different level to gameplay depth.
Personally, I don’t like how the trait system is. I’d prefer to have access to all 5 lines at once, being able to pick things here or there and make more well rounded builds instead of being forced into “Metas”. Give us like 80 points to spend and bringing back ol trait system. They talk about build diversity, but that’s hilarious. There has never been build diversity.
So who would be on top?
I personally think Warrior would be pretty stupid, having access to str/disc/def and berserker. Most now are forced into Disc for movement+fast hands, and now Defense for AH trait. Leaving u with vanilla or zerker. Would pretty much be 30-50% dmg increase.
Then of course mesmers, druids, necros etc
This is meant to just be a gee whiz fun discussion.

My approach would be:
3 core lines.
1 Elite line, also creating a ‘basic’ elite spec representing aspects/builds of the core class
Also heavily narrow the field of application of current traits. For example a defensive built warrior only having access to their best defensive assets whilst wielding a shield, to avoid creating monsters that can do too many things at once.
Finally slightly nerf all traits across the board to compensate for the increase of traits total.
This way we’d hopefully:
-Have no mandatory lines unless they are synergizing with the build choice from the elite line.(For example a thief choosing stealth augments from the core elite would naturally go with shadowarts, one with open combat choices or daredevil would take acrobatics)
-Give more traits to select from without impacting the overall class performance too much.
The main thing here is the core line.
With three respective choices for each tier you could pre-define three builds for each class, but the player would still have 3 traitlines for variation. For example whether to focus a defensive build more on condi or direct damage denial.
The elite spec would either open up a completely new option for the class, or prove a superior variant for but one of the core builds, not for all.
A herald therefore would become a stronger supporter than a ventari focussed core build, but still be inferior to a shiro core choice in direct fighting capability.
Idk, Ive been working on this for a while now, and besides the need to basically overhaul every trait and add 100 completely new, it should work out pretty well in terms of build diversity.
Yeah, thief would probably literally OS stuff if we could get critical strike on top of DA Trick DD.
Devastation+retribution+invocation and herald… YES CHAMPION
4th line? Sure since what this game needs most is more power creep.
Seriously though they should revert the trait locking they made last year where you can only choose from 3 options in each tier. I want to be able to choose an adept trait and slot it into a master slot if i want to.
If a stranger comes up and offers you some ‘Powercreep’, "Just Say " NO!""….
D.A.R.E. to keep kids off powercreep….

But maybe 3 lines + elite is a little too much. There are only 6 lines total after all, so you’d have everyone running 4 out of 6 lines.
In core game everybody is running 3/5 and effectively it would be 4/7.(you gotta read the whole thing) Seems legit.
Honestly, I like it the way it is except that the elite specs are too strong.
What they should do is tie certain benefits to unlocking the elite spec rather than running it. For example, you should acquire the ability to use the new weapon types just by unlocking your elite spec, regardless of whether you’re running it in your current build. The fact that it doesn’t work that way is not only kind of unbalanced, but also a nuisance to deal with.

Is this a serious thread?
I literally quit the game if this happens.
You know the problem of the game currently?: you can have a build which does everything (damage, control, sustain, support etc…). And now you want to add another line, meaning another way NOT to specialize? Hell no.
I don’t even know what would you be trying to fix by introducing this change.
No, right now the priority should be to erase power creep, and a good measure of that is that core classes should be viable. Basically, my reference is that bunker guard should be a thing again, but not by boosting core traits and skills but by nerfing hard the damage and insane sustain that elite specs have brought.

Some reading comprehension would go a long way. Imagine, for a moment, if we had limited points to spend and access to all all the lines. Would you think we would not have more diverse builds and less power creep like we did before?
The only reason there IS a power creep is bc we get maxed 3 lines with ridiculous passives. This game has turned into dumb passives, spam, aoe spam, and build wars.
Everyone is the same, literally, everyone, albeit a few sigil or rune choices.
I’m talking about access to all the lines, not just a fourth. Although it would free up some more choices.
OP actually has a good point.
A-Net should read this.

That, my friend, is what you call true balance.
A glass cannon that already gets one-shot actually being able to one-shot others ;-)

No, Classes are designed so that running certain traitline combos exclude you from running others. Or in other words you can’t have everything.
Example: Under the OP’s system a Engi could run a firearms and explosives super-DPS build while still being able to grab alchemy and Scrapper defensive lines.
Or hell imagine Soul Reap/Curses/Spite/Reaper necros.
But they can’t grab everything is my bloody point. Which forces some of the more power creep stuff to be toned down if you want access to a more well rounded character.
This is the only MMO ive ever played that limits build diversity and limits access to your skill trees and makes you select x out of X

Well, as much as I liked the idea of spending limited points, they are right here.
You would pick exactly the strongest traits available.
This would lead to a different kind of powercreep. Highly specialized roles instead of allrounders, but its still powercreep.
This would not help warriors…because other classes would just get more then what warriors get by adding a 4th…Warriors need the defense and discipline lines combined into one line so they are both no longer needed in a viable build, it would really open warrior up if fast hands and warriors sprint were moved into and combined with the defense line and the discipline line was given its own identity
Would it break the game?
juni patch already broke the game with 3 lines
it would be fun to mess around with but throwing more fuel on the fire is not going to douse it.
