A small note for those Italian players who are having lag spikes. The problem (my problem) seems to be Fastweb. Although various speed tests show a 20Mb in dowload and 9 in upload, browsing is also fine as well as the general download/upload is, however the game experience is not. GW2 is the only game on my pc suffering from this situation. I am not sure how much Fastweb has to feel gulty since the majority of its services seem to work fine, but comparing GW2 connection with the connection through other providers made me think twice.

I tried TIM, by using hotspot on iPad and the pathping result was astonishing: 2 steps vs 20. No packs loss vs many 100% fail (Telia and ncsoft).

Now, I am seriously considering switching provider.

But is there anyone who can explain to me whose fault this is? Is it Fastweb? Anet? Telia & Ncsoft? Should I really switch provider or ditch the game all at once?

The pathping results are not very telling as I am learning better how to read the results due to this issue as some of these routers and servers are NOT responding to ping requests anyway. A regular tracert however tells a lil better story.

Although they block ping requests I had much suspicion and even more so now that this is where the problem is. 149ms is way past acceptable for ttl. I get no help from ISP I get no help from the owners of the equipment. I am stuck, and I feel we as the ones with the problems are the only ones willing to do any work whatsoever so why don’t these companies hire us instead of the slugs they are employing atm.

Very interesting read and sent to me in direct response to my connection problems. I have yet to deal directly with my isp armed with this new information. Something else very interesting I got a list of hundreds of servers in Austin, Texas I have done several traceroutes to multiple different servers. Interestingly enough I get routed directly through comcasts own routers all the way in to Austin except when I try to connect to anets servers……

I’ve been waiting patiently for this to get fixed, but I am still struggling with big lag spikes, then disconnect and can’t log back in game. So here it goes:

After checking my equipment, im here for ingame lag problems:

Your location: Italy
Provider: telecom italia
DNS: tried with opendns, google, unlocator, standard telecom italia dns
Time and date of incident (plus time zone): mostly during EU prime-time but occasionally also in other slot times
Game World: Anvil rock (NA)
Brief description of what you’re seeing:
In PvE, PvP or WvW movement is slowed or a lag time from movement and location of the character. (“I run and reach a tree, after a second the game relocate the character at the beginning position of the run”). Lag in skill launch and execution( i can use skills 1 to 5 before I see any execution in the game).

Additional informations:
- CPU usage 70% in game
- Ram usage 3 Gb on 4 gb available
- Network problems: medium time to resp. about 50 ms (that is ok for other games)
- problem happened with the last story update of the game

During a morning meeting, I learned that some players in Europe have recently been experiencing latency issues. I see posts in a few of the forums, so I’m creating this thread to try to gather and focus your input to help us analyze this issue. (If y’all can share the link to this thread with others, that’ll help us gather info more quickly. Thanks!)

If you’ve recently noticed an increase in latency or lag, please post in this thread with the following:

One more fun evening of not being able to play with friends, instead getting super lag, log-on server failures and finally kicked out of the game & unable to log back in.

One would think they’d know about this by now and would come up with a solution? Since it’s always in the evenings in central EU time, it must be an issue with capacity. Too many players – servers can’t hold it.

Game started to have problems with lag again. It’s rather a minor type, it’s still possible to log in and spikes aren’t frequent nor longer than 5 seconds. Oh …

… ok nevermind, game just kicked me out and I am stuck on loading screen / login screen. I think good ol’ lag is back again.

After very bad Sunday (game was unavailable 16:46 – 22:49) the following week days were mostly lag free, deffinitely best week I have experienced in GW2 in last few months. It’s shame problems had returned.

ANet, do you really have a plan to resolve DC and lag issues in near future or you just focused on expansions and Living Stories ? WVW is not playable, DC + skill lag, last night minimum 2 seconds lag on wvw. With every living story update it’s getting worse and worse. Many people send you lots of trace and connection information to help fixing issue but still nothing.

fyi, the problem is limited to certain EU networks. If you avoid them, there’s no problem.

Back again. The situation has pretty much stayed the same as we’re fairly confident that it is an ISP issue, and that’s unfortunately one of the most difficult problems to correct.

In looking over the results of the traceroutes a number of you provided to Tech Support, with assistance from our Network Operations Center team, we were able to conclude that the problem lays with several hops that are owned outside of our peer-network. The ISPs with the most problems look to be Telia, GTT.net/Tinet, and KPN.net. We were able to confirm this by both the traceroutes provides, and reverse traceroutes (from our Internet Data Center to the player). Less than 1% of the EU playerbase are suffering from packet loss, but that 1% experiences on average of 60% PL because of those bad routes.

ArenaNet probably hasn’t said anything in a while because they’ll give the same response and some people simply can’t handle that fact. ArenaNet is likely stuck waiting on these networks to fix the problem, just as you are waiting on them. Imagine the power going out due to a downed line. People living with you expect for you to fix the problem, but can you? Likewise, ArenaNet can complain, but they cannot force these networks to do anything.

This all started happening around the time Netflix was officially launched in Europe. The same thing happened in NA years ago when older networks, especially networks serving a lot of people, simply couldn’t handle the constant high bandwidth usage of HD video streaming. The proper fix is upgrading these networks, which costs time and money. As a cheaper solution however, they use software to forcibly limit everyone’s bandwidth by dropping packets, causing an unstable connection which destroys real time communication.

After it was mostly fine for several weeks it’s been horrible since saturday. Rubberbanding and connection lag between 3 and 10 seconds. Sometimes even several minutes of everything freezing. Also random dc’s. Connection and TS fine, just your servers. Completely unplayable for me… if it stays like this I won’t play any expansion but leave this game. Seriously fed up.

Meh expansion… What expansion? It’s been two days since you announced it and your servers can’t handle it and you expect us to even buy an expansion? 3 years in and there are still latency issues and little annoying bugs..

This is becoming a really severe issue for me.

TBH this game never ran flawlessly as far as connection is concerned; got way too much DC’s and sudden lag spikes that almost never happen in other online game I play. This said, truly bad “lag days”, when game became unplayable for extended periods of time, were – for me – fairly few and far between.

This was gradually getting worse as LS2 progressed, and last LS release basically broke the game for me; seems like every other day I’m getting 2-5 second delays on everything I do, from skill activation to mining or opening containers – and whenever some action is taking place (I’m talking PvP skirmish, not WvW zerg battles) there’s a big lag spike incoming. This happens everywhere I go, be it full maps, empty maps or PvP maps. If this starts I’m pretty much done for the evening, it doesn’t go away in an hour or two (so, now I’m posting this mini rant instead of playing the game…).

Getting seriously tired of this.

Description:
The game is unplayable at the moment. Starting from not being able to log in ending on insane lag spikes (both open world and WvW). Opening inventory takes 1-10 seconds. Activating any skill from 1 second until I get kicked out fromthe game. Yesterday (27.01) when we started Wurm fight at WvW my game stopped at the beginning of the fight. After 20 seconds my first skill activated and when my second skill activated it was already after the fight and my team was half way through the fight at the airport.
This is nowhere near fun.
Please solve this issue.

I am experiencing terrible lags in prime time since saturday, in both PvE and PvP.
In PvE, various open world maps I tried and CoE had all the same issue. Usually, the issues start at around 7pm and last until 10pm (UTC+1)

  • Your location (today): Germany / Unranked sPvP
  • Time and date of incident (plus time zone): Started at around 7pm UTC+1, still ongoing.
  • Game World: Drakkar Lake
  • Brief description of what you’re seeing: Players warping regularly for some game-meters frequently, players not updating their position for up to 30 seconds sometimes, inlcuding my inability to activate skills for the same amount of time.

Description: Skill lag, lag spikes, chat delays, chat disappearing, extreme rubberbanding, players stuck in their positions from 30 secs up to 2-3 minutes, player characters stopping doing any actions but running in single direction even if encountering walls/mountains then teleporting back to initial “working” position. Currently unplayable on all game modes. Server disconnects every 2-10 mins. Something like this never happened to me before [playing since release].

Since yesterday things have actually been even worse for me. Now my game freezes solid in the evenings every time I log in (after about 2 minutes). What’s even funnier is that I can still write to people and they see my messages in the chat (and I can see theirs) but I can’t see them or use any of my skills.

@edit: My Internet definitely seems fine (as in pages load with the usual speed, I can still use sites like Twitch or YouTube perfectly fine and I have no lag in other MMOs) so it definitely looks like an in-game problem.

On a related note, why do we as EU players get routed to US servers anyway?

It’s not that much of a surprise that we get latency issues when there’s only 1-2 choke points everybody is routed through to get over the big lake.

Maybe that would resolve quite a few problems. Putting the servers physically into EU territory.

I was about to say the same as the post above. I’ve never checked the locations of the IPs I connect to, but I decided to this time around. I’m not up for waiting 2-3 months for a ninja fix or the problem to dissapear by itself - whatever happened last time - so I’ve done quite a bit of reading on various TCP settings and looking more closely at the information I have at my end, since ANet seems inclined not to share any information concerning the issue that they might have.

It turns out, that despite being in England, playing on the EU servers, and that there are supposedly EU servers located in Germany, that I am for some reason, connected to the NA servers in Texas. Now, I know there are different servers for different things, and I’m bound to have to connect to a server in NA for something, so I didn’t just stop at /ip. According to my resource monitor, I’m connected to:
206.127.146.44 - The one returned by /ip, and shows the most activity.
64.25.47.117 - Sending and receiving small amounts of data.
206.127.159.109 - Appears, sends and receives small amounts of data, then dissapears.
All three are in the United States, Texas, Austin.

So is EU just the zone for everyone with lag, where everyone can lag equally and not be destroyed by those that live in NA? If there are closer servers - EU servers - then why aren’t people in EU connecting to them instead?

@Impact: all three IP addresses you mentioned are actually located in the datacenter in Frankfurt in Germany. I have a ping latency of about 20ms to all three. I am located in a small city near Frankfurt. Sites located in the US have a minimum latency of 120ms from here because of the length of the transatlantic cable, so it isn’t possible that your addresses are located in the US.

The corresponding IP networks may be registered for a US network, but they are actually used here in the EU.

By the way, although I am located virtually next door to the EU datacenter, I experience the same lags as everyone. The weekend was very bad.

You’re right of course. I mean geolocation says they are in NA, but I know it’s not always accurate, and that I should be getting around 140-160ms ping to NA. I suppose I forgot to think about that in my desperation to identify the issue. I hate not knowing what the problem is. Even if there’s nothing I can do, it somehow makes me feel more powerless to resolve it.

If you’ve recently noticed an increase in latency or lag, please post in this thread with the following:

Your location: Germany

Game World: Heart of the Mists / PvP

Brief description of what you’re seeing:
60 fps, latency 60 ms, 1 second skill delay, Porting to starting position of ride the lightning ability.

This Issue occurs quite often and probably more likely during prime time around 8 pm (no prove), for me and my team mates aswell who live in England and Sweden.

Sometime we can completely solve this issue by using WTFast and chosing a Server from another Location. This Issue exsists since release of the game and it is mendatory to be fixed as long as you hold cash prize tournaments in this game. Suffered alot from this during last Monthly tournament and it´s a joke that random lags are a bigger thread of loosing than the actual competitors.
