snipped
slight issue for pve. but there’s a lot of things for most classes that don’t work against world bosses, so it’s pretty fair. in wvw and spvp it’s not much of an issue.
I don’t mean to be rude, but… who cares?
This assumption that sPvP and WvW are the important bits of the game and that PvE is secondary is extremely frustrating.
of course it’s something subjective. for me, pve doesn’t really matter because in my eyes, pve doesn’t present a challenge at all. it’s not exciting.
but what i said still stands. all classes have things that don’t work against bosses with that bar thing. it’s nothing to really complain about

first i’d like to say blackpowder>heartseaker is such a waste of initiative unless you’re finishing someone off with less than half hp. but with that issue with reveal, it’s not worth the potential damage boost. that’s exactly why i’ve abandoned heartseeker as a stleath completely. bound offers a much more consistent result.
it could be a number of things. it could be that your computer, rather than your internet, is making you lag and it processes your damage weird, especially if you’re traited with mug.
i use bound to stealth because it’s usually the LAST thing to cause damage, after steal damage, and sigils. also, it seems to stealth after the animation ends for bound. i successfully stealth 99% of the time. i’m confident of it.
why not 2k? if you think about it. a lot of AA do like 2k to us thieves, like ranger AA. my AA on SB does around 1.9k on mediums or lights. I don’t remember which.
2k for something you have to time doesn’t sound unreasonable to me especially in wvw, where every other class has a either crazy regen, tons of invulnerability and block, high defense/toughness, or basically more than 1 life bar… and hey, even classes that stealth better than us.
Yes, Unload was buffed with this, but honestly, unload already had huge burst, and now has even more burst with the might stacks, enabling P/P to be the best burst damage the class has. It’s objectively better than backstab and in fact so good it nullifies the purpose in playing CS/signets because Signet use becomes pointless for massive P/P unload damage.
i’m actually pretty tempted to try out P/P. it’d be a nice way to open perhaps, but there still would be no way for me to integrate it with d/p play since the two builds pretty much use different trait lines completely. least, from what i can see.
i’m not really hyped for this. most people take it as “I should spam my initiative” but in actuality, it was meant more for “the fight is drawing out, but i’m getting stronger”
for my build in particular, I trait DA, CS, and DD, because I like burst damage and bound helps. but if I had to choose between replacing one of them, I’d have to go with CS. yet, while comparing the damage, i’m still dishing out more damage with CS over trickery with the lead attacks.
yes, it gives me more initiative, but i’m doing significantly less damage. as for people hopping on the bandwagon, as I’ve read from other threads, people spamming their initiative JUST to get the damage boost, are risking their chances to disengage if things go south. it’s kinda stupid…
but hey, they pretty much said it was mostly to boost pistol and sword skills. in that case, I think they did a good job in their attempt.
but still, I think lead attacks is just eh. d/p thieves honestly didn’t get much attention but that’s fine. what bothers me most is they again buffed eles. they were even the first class on the list of changes, which clearly, to me anyway, shows a distinct bias. and why engi?… I dunno…
(edited by Achey.3612)
also, as it is now, I’m more of the type to play WvW and even in sPvP, I pick my targets carefully. engaging 1v1 when an opponent has full hp only means on average I take them down to 1/4 of their hp before they flee towards backup.
I’m an ambusher. I look for weakened players and finish them off. I hunt for who I believe are commanders and point them out to my friends. and most importantly, I hunt for back-liners.
aaaaw you were making such great points until you started talking about giving the thief the ability to pop 1-5 skills simultaneously. that would be a disaster in wvw and spvp. and 60 initiative? what? lol
it was at that point, I think I realized that you’re an amazing troll. you reeled me in, hook line and sinker. (not sure if I’m using that expression right…)
anyway, uuuh. I agree with EVERYTHING until you mentioned the above points I’ve mentioned.
something i’ve noticed is that if you just browse through the class threads, you’ll notice that the thief threads have a significantly higher amount of three things compared to the other class threads. thieves that complain, thieves who suggest changes, and other classes who complain about the very FEW times they’ve been killed by a good thief.
all the other threads MOSTLY consist of questions about which skill do other people prefer or which traits should they use. even threads about which class is better, cept none ever compare their class to thief in that subject.
to me thats a clear sign that thieves are really the weakest of all classes. still, there are a few players who still use the class pretty well. somehow, they’re like the loud minority that everyone pays attention to, which makes them believe THEY are the majority. kinda like femikittens
why is it that when thieves struggle, it’s because they aren’t good enough, and one of the few good builds we have is cheese, yet no one really kittens on all the very many other builds from other classes that are FAR stronger than our “cheesy” build?
all i see is “oh, you have a viable build? it’s cheese. you’re obviously not skilled and your build carries you.” OP is full of bs
I’ve face a few of those mesmers. It’s a weird feeling knowing the time and effort you put into your build, no matter what, can be easily countered by another class/build. Maybe try it out and see if you like it? Stealth for thieves suck. It’s intermitted and short. Lots of classes have counters to stealth(Sic ‘em, ect.) where we don’t have any. I don’t count spamming cluster bombs in refuge a counter since no reveal.
As far as your venomshare comment, BV is unblockable.
BV is unblockable to some degree, because you can still resist it from invulnerability and some blocks. i spent a long time testing it in guild hall with a close friend. maybe i should record another session to prove it’s blockable.
but even then, there are A LOT of traits from other classes that can cleanse BV instantly. i’ll definately give that type of mesmer a shot. i have a lvl 80 mesmer already but i’ll have to do research and farm for the armor and trinkets.
so i’m roaming on my thief. and i saw this chronomancer fighting some other guy in the distance and he kills him in less than like… half a second. really, it was like a blink of an eye.
the next second, he turns to face me, disappears, and kills me in the blink of an eye too and i COMPLETELY die just as fast. so i thought, i gotta check my combat log…. that’s insane.
and i see this. thats 20,944 damage in less than half a second. no matter how glassy i make myself, i can’t reach that much damage that fast on my thief. and it looked so effortless. not to mention, as soon as this guy kills me, he turns invisible and reappears off in the distance a few seconds later.
i dunno…. maybe i should switch to mesmer. at least they’re more useful in zergs, right??? and i definitely want to try that build, whatever it is. i mean, i could run venom share to help the zerg but at that point, then im sacrificing my own enjoyment JUST to be a utility for 5 people at a time….. on attacks that MIGHT proc because of all of the block and invulnerability….. every….. 32….. seconds…… it makes me sigh. it really does.
i’ve been running s/d for so long, because i like it. i do fine with d/p but thief in general, to me anyway, is getting harder and harder to play.
i know you guys have heard it all before already but i’ve been trying to stay optimistic. maybe i shouldn’t have calculated the damage but it really hit me hard realizing that when you guys say that the classes that CAN stealth do it better than us and out dps us by far, and that there’s almost no thieves in spvp meta, well, i dont know where i’m going with that.
would it be a good idea to just switch to mesmer? what classes do you think might be a good alternative? or rather, what other classes do you guys like, besides thief?
I’m currently sittin at my college library right now reading a bunch of the wvw forums. everyone has he same complaint. but instead of a stupid wanna be digital riot, when I get home, I’m going to log in,
record myself exploring WvW and show how EMPTY it is. I’m not going to show eternal battleground because we all know that’s where everyone goes usually… it’s the only familiar place left.
here’s what I propose to you. I urge you to do the same. hell, even record during reset night and show how dull it is. make multiple recordings throughout the week. post nothing but those videos. new topics. this is what I’m going to try to do between classwork and work… work….
for me it’ll be easier because I’m a resident of kaineng. but I HAVE to know if the higher tier is in the same boat. which is why I urge anyone to record too
the thing that bugs me the most is that I’ve noticed an issue with block. there are way too many classes that have block and invulnerability. As a thief, we don’t really have a lot of things that can do fast multi hits other than sneak attack and s/p #3…. but s/p #3 makes us stationary while enemies can move while they use block/invulnerable.
at the same time…. a lot of other classes get a ton of multi hit along with their block and invul…. the reason why I bring that up is because we generally use blind as our damage mitigation as well as evade, but blind pulses… which… I have no idea why…. and we can’t attack while we evade…. also, since we don’t have a lot of multi-hitting skills, when WE’RE blinded, it’s even harder to land our heavy hitters…..
it’s like every class outshines all the things we’re SUPPOSE to be good at…. and lets face it…. when do we ever 1v1 people now a days (and we all know our 1v1 capabilities are sub par….)? in wvw and spvp, theres almost never people alone
how exactly am i off base. the fact that it’s “entirely unexpected” is a big contributor of misdirection. and i’ve only listed a few of their capabilities. all the things i’ve mentioned above are things i see them do in wvw all the time through my experiences. there could be other things that greatly contribute to their misdirection that i’ve never seen but by no means am i off base.
kevvy, you’ve pretty much have brought my argument full circle and i appreciate you closing the gaps i missed. i’ve rerolled as a mesmer and i’m learning it slowly, as i did with thief.
theres something about stealth classes that i’ve noticed which i think is one of the biggest problems.
there is a pattern to all of them EXCEPT for thief.
mesmers can turn invisible. mesmers also have clones.
ranger can turn invisible and also have pets they can cycle through
engineers can turn invisible and they also have turrets
thieves can turn invisible….. (blank)
the biggest problem in my opinion is thieves have no misdirection, as in, there is nothing to pull the enemy’s attention away. theres no REAL slight of hand (and no im not talking about the trait)
stealth is a two step process. disappearance and the reveal. mesmers are truly the best at stealth misdirection.
mesmers: in a field of clones, they can disappear with other things to keep the enemy’s attention and also occupying their target system.
in the mesmer’s reveal step, they’re safe because if they play smart, they can use their clones to further disguise themselves. you also have to note the ease in which it they can summon clones. dodgeroll, utility, weapon skills….
the other classes are more similar in the fact that they too can use misdirection but not in the form of clones. the differences are this
rangers only have one form of misdirection at a time but they can cycle through them. pets taunt, they reveal, they knock down, they fear, and they immobilize. a common mistake is ignoring the pets. but for a trapper ranger it is more or less, win win.
if you focus on the pet, the pet can lock you in place while the trapper ranger stacks traps on you. if you focus on the ranger, they can turn invisible and force you to engage the pet and the cycle repeats. even if you kill the pet, another one will be pulled out, furthering the cycle. and don’t take the pets lightly, they can be pretty tanky.
engineers are weaker of the two because they hardly have any stealth but their stealth is still much stronger than thief in the fact that they can flee to a bunker of turrets. the turrets are strong and hard to approach for melee. they can immobilize you, burn you, and heal them.
before i get into thieves, it is important to note how stealth works. we all know that there is a 3 second reveal stage. again for those classes above, misdirection mitigates the reveal time because they’re solid defenses.
thieves and mesmers have something in common. they may stay in stealth for a VERY long time. rangers can too but they have to waste their traps.
the reason i compare mesmers and thieves in this case is because mesmers can still summon clones and phantasms to deal damage and STAY invisible. they can even shatter them and stay invisible if i remember correctly.
but when a thief needs to attack, it is forced to reveal itself with no misdirection afterwards. no clones, no turrets, no pets.
(the skill where you summon other thieves dont count because they follow you, thus revealing your position)
another thing to note, a lot of the most damaging skills from thief COMES from stealth. i was hoping the pistol buff would make it so we wouldnt have to rely on stealth so much, but we have no damage mitigation lol…. toughness and armor are BS really…
as a player who’s been a thief since the beginning of gw2, this is what bothers me the most. i dont know if anyone else has acknowledged these facts, but to me, it’s a real issue which pretty much forced me to switch to mesmer.
would you bring out the grenth hood already?!!?!?!?!?!!?
why couldn’t the phantom hood go on the backburner?!?! you’re driving me insane anet! i’ve been waiting patiently for this freakin grenth hood because i wasn’t around for the last time! i don’t want to wait another freakin year just for another chance! if you aren’t going to release it at all, just freakin tell us already!
honestly though, it’s more sad for me that the only reason why i’m thinking of quitting guild wars is because i don’t have the grenth hood. i HATE when games discontinue items.
still no grenth hood… i’ve been waiting for so long for one. i was hoping october would be the month. cmon man….
and it makes it seem like veteran players are only worth 10 dollars lol… kinda depressing
i have chochobo but i’d settle for at least 30 dollars. i know it’s a late thread but…. maaaan…. i like gw2 but i can’t afford to pay 50 bucks for each expansion :T and i don’t want to wait like… 3 years to get the expansion for 10 dollars…. you know?
it’s a stab in the back is what it is. i’ve made tons of micro transactions and then they hand out the game for free. and apparently, this market plan is going to be the same AFTER heart of thorns. so this means that if theres another expansion, they’re going to make us pay whatever that price is, but they’ll get the core game free and heart of thorns for free.
now tell me how that’s fair to the rest of the player base???
actually, i bought the game for 60 dollars when the game first came out… so… thats even worse!
so apparently the market plan is that everyone gets the core game for free plus heart of thorns… and veteran get a free character slot. but for vets who already own the game, thats bad because i also heard that we won’t even be able to gift our free copy to anyone. (a character slot does not justify the price at all…)
why are we paying full price? can someone confirm if all this is even true?
the standard price to buy the core game alone is 50 dollars. HoT is 50 dollars. this means:
A)new players would be getting a 100 dollar value for half the price.
B) veteran players still have to pay 100 total because we’ve already purchased the game before.
keep in mind… character slots are only 800 gems… which is 10 dollars…..
i don’t really like getting ripped off. soooo i’m probably just not going to get the expansion.
I leave for a week and hidden thief is suddenly messed up. i’ve been testing it too on chickens and raccoons.
i feel like now theres only a 50% chance for me to actually stealth when i use steal and i don’t have autoattack on! what happend?!
oh, well it was a first for me, so i figured i’d share. im glad they’re aware of it at least
if anyone is getting this message report it immediately. i haven’t visited the website provided in the letter because i don’t want to risk my account. at the bottom i highlighted in red that it was not sent by the GW2 team.
been waiting on the grenth hood forever. more than a year maybe…. i don’t really wanna buy anything else till the grenth hood comes out. i’ve been stashing cash JUST for the occasion and i’m sure a bunch of people are too.
i have to agree with a lot of you, especially with the one who commented on my panic stealths. i often have off days but sometimes i have those “in the zone” moments like in this video (the last fight where my 1v4 turns into a 2v4)
and narkodx, i run signet because i solo stomp camps and moving from camp to camp faster is always a good thing. i actually use scorpion wire when im more in a combative mood.
(nother edit) that first video really doesn’t show off anything special :P and all your guy’s speculations are definately justified. i get sloppy often after roaming all day
That second video doesn’t help your case. In the necro fight alone you miss 4 CnDs. Not from them being smart or dodging, you just kind of miss them. Then you let arguably the slowest class in game get a ton of distance on you before finally taking them down. The end fight showcases once again the build’s strength of killing terrible players.
You have a lb ranger who in all likelihood was using his face on the keyboard, never even getting off a rapid fire or more than 1 or 2 autoattacks before going down (in a span of 30s+). There is a staff ele who is auto attacking in fire the entire time, instead of just throwing on aoes on it’s allies. People didn’t start dropping until the medi guard came in as well, so its hard to claim that was a result of you playing well.
LOL it’s all sad but true
Now I know why people rage at you man
You are carried HARD by the conditions
You wouldn’t kill a kitten thing in full zerk gear
i used to run zerk but thats a different play style. takes more patience
anyway, i at least learned that i definately need to learn to work on my CnD timing, so thanks for that
:U guess it doesn’t lol. low tier server, low tier players maybe :P theres lots of things i;m not good at but 90% of the time when i 1v1 i win at least. but thats what thieves are tailored for right?

I’ve been a thief since I started playing gw2 . it’s been a couple years but I STILL only have 1 lvl 80 character, haven’t completed the story at all, aaaaaaand hardly have done any map completion ^^; embarrassing yes but I love wvw and spvp
i dunno… firstly, I find it interesting that p/d isn’t often talked about in the forums.
second… people say p/d is a cheese build, but so many people on the forums complain about backstab, so isn’t that cheesier? again… I dunno…
anyway, something that I’ve been encountering lately in WvW is when I solo roam, or roam with a few close friends, the people that I stomp block/whisper me. not to say gf or gg, but to complain about my build. yes because It totally has nothing to do with the time I spend researching every class and how to counter (yes, I do that on my spare time because I like winning… problem?)
it has nothing to do with learning to predict when an enemy class is about to burst. it has nothing to do with taking time to learn how to use my class. one can definitely admit that p/d is a simple build, but it takes much more to make it so you can 1v3, efficiently. also if you look it up, there are tons of videos on youtube where every class can do the same.
but I suppose I digress. it’s really disappointing that there are so much poor sportsmanship and I know it’s not something I should really complain about, but when I’m getting pm’d like 3 times every session about the same thing, it gets a little annoying.
anyway, here’s a little video of my friend and I stalling and defending against another server.
i honestly get some creeping feeling it’s gonna be something silly like torch…. a lot of torch skills cause blind… and burn… unless it’s only 2 handed weapons. then nevermind that. I can’t imagine anything with rifle cept a sniper like skill set. invisibility’s #1 skill would probably be like… headshot…. which will daze for 1 second…
the number 2 skill will probably be something like immobilize
number 3 will probably be some sort of retreat skill.
number 4 might probably be a crippling skill for close range
number 5 might be some sort of jump or cloak.
that’s just my guess
as a thief, im so excited about seeing so many more thieves in wvw. but with the rise in thieves, there’s also this strange rise in immobilize and chill spam.
i’m not sure if it’s the same in the higher tiers but here in the lower tier’s i’ve actually been seeing 5 man groups of nothing but thieves and it’s very interesting.
the only tough part is since my main party is somewhat out of commission, i have to rely on pugs or just solo roam, stealing camps. when a group of 5 thieves roll in on you, it’s really ugly. have you ever seen 5 thieves taking turns turning you into stone? yikes…..
also…. sometimes sneak attack doesn’t work and it only shoots one bullet. just saying…
i can’t stand NOT having long reach. it always helps me get the jump on people and it helps me catch up with shadow step>steal. its basically like having a 2400 reach steal.
thrill of the crime is decent but with the up coming nerf to might, it isn’t going to be very great. yes it also gives fury and swiftness, but as a condi thief, fury isn’t important.
as for swiftness, i’ve become really good at using signet of shadows so the extra swiftness from totc is useless.
also, i recently discovered that using blinding powder isn’t so important and i prefer using hidden thief so i don’t have to waste 5 initiative doing CnC>Steal. it’s made me a much more efficient duelist
maybe. i really dont know. i havent changed my build in ages but i thought last refuge only triggers when your hp threshold reaches 25%. latency shouldnt be an issue though. i’ve been hearing a lot about this last refuge nonsense but im not 100% sure what its all about
now, i agree with a few people. the fact that stealth isn’t thief exclusive is a little strange to me, although it makes a little sense for a ranger and mesmer i guess, but i why engi? they bunker so well and their turrets are strong, so why give them even more??? healing turrets, net turrets, flame turrets. blind, poison, bleed, pull, blocks, mines, grenades, stealth, that weird thing where they turn tiny and become invincible or something? i dunno…. all that in one solid build. they really are a jack of all trades.
the thing that bugs me the most is our stupid basilisk venom. if what i heard is true, it used to be unblockable or something? i dunno…. but i hate it because its soooooo easy to dodge/block and it has a cast time…. you only get ONE shot every 40 seconds and for what?….. 3 seconds of stone? why is it that ranger’s entangle is unblockable AND it has a huge AoE radius? and it can snag 5 enemies at a time??? thats so unfair.
why can’t we just have an unblockable basilisk venom? a TRUE elite… i thought an elite was suppose to be…. you know… ELITE… basilisk venom is weaker than most of the utilities including the other venoms
but its got the lowest cooldown of the elites, and that is why i use it. in spvp AND wvw, i run into enemies so frequently that basilisk venom is my only choice.
I’m a big fan of using CnD>Steal because its an easy stealth but recently, i’ve been getting revealed when i do it. I know i have the timing right but about 90% of the time, I keep getting revealed. It really has only been happening recently, maybe for a couple days.
is anyone else experiencing this problem? I’ve always had auto attack on but from my understanding and experience, going into stealth cancels auto attack. i’ve been maining thief since i first started playing, again, it hasn’t been much of an issue till recently.
oooh my goooooooosh i accidently double posted. someone please delete the other one T_T im so sorry
NOTHING! YOU’VE GOT NOTHIIING!!! NOTHIIIIIING!!!!
seriously…. our wvw is dead now. AND IM GONNA CONTRIBUTE TO THAT because i don’t wanna be in a dead wvw server.
so, wherever i go, i cant wait for me and my 4 buddies to be welcomed into a new home!

so, wherever i go, i cant wait for me and my 4 buddies to be welcomed into a new home!
the reason i personally cant stand venoms (specifically basilisk venom) is because you only get a certain amount of hits and they go away but thats not entirely the problem. the problem is if an enemy dodges, blocks, or ANYTHING….. the venom goes away.
i hate that when i use balilisk venom, all an enemy has to do is dodge or just be a guardian or an engi… and it wastes my elite for a whole 45 seconds… the elite should be unblockable at least OR make it so it goes away after a SUCCESSFUL hit. you only get ONE…. one chance and for what? 3 seconds of basically…. a daze? and it only works on ONE target. while rangers get a long kitten immobilize that targets 5 in an AoE radius.
I don’t know if you were around during the early days, but Basilisk used to be an unbreakable stun. This was back when thieves were WAY more bursty – when mug used to crit and eons before the ferocity nerf. Now that thief burst has been kicked in the balls, Basilisk stands out even more as a mediocre elite skill. Trouble is, for 9 builds out of ten it’s still the best we’ve got. That speaks volumes IMO. I’m all for making Shadow Refuge an elite. It deserves the spot at least.
i think a decent solution would be a trait that would grant you stealth every time you use a venom. at least then it would lesser the blow from adding venoms to utility. we already have a rune (rune of the trapper) that allows stealth for traps and that was a step in the right direction.
No thanks. As others have said, balancing weak abilities through runes is the worst kind of approach. We want diversity of builds, right? That won’t exist when a player running this or that build MUST HAVE this or that rune set to make it work. Worse still, niche rune sets act like a bandaid preventing the sorts of proper fixes those abilities really deserve. You think traps are going to get reworked now those trapper runes have been released? I doubt it. Every thief running a trap-focussed build must run those runes unless they’re trying to prove something. Yes, at least traps are a viable option now, but it’s an extremely limited option that’s stopping a REAL FIX.
Before I quit gw2 .
something something DOOOOOOM
games dead neways
kk be byeI find your lack of faith disturbing.
I lol’d
im not really saying there should be a rune set. im just trying to say that at least they tried to do something with the traps. I still find it more ideal that they buff venoms via traits. the DA line doesn’t do the venoms any justice as it is, nor do condi thieves usually spec into DA unless they’re specing into mug.
again, I think that the thief trait lines are really inefficient and should be reworked a little.
i dont really want another rune tailored for thieves. i prefer if they just give variety for thieves. all we have right now is either condi or backstab. everything else is just meh….
i whole heartily agree with a lot of people with the utility slots. i forgot to mention this but keep in mind our only forms of increased movement speed are if you spec into trickery for “thrill of the crime” or if you use the sigil" which takes away even more utility.
i think a decent solution would be a trait that would grant you stealth every time you use a venom. at least then it would lesser the blow from adding venoms to utility. we already have a rune (rune of the trapper) that allows stealth for traps and that was a step in the right direction.
ive actually been experimenting with that and its nice but requires A LOT of planning. viable especially with shadow trap and shadow pursuit.
this solution would make the elite at least a little more viable, you could put two venoms in utility and have one free slot for either shadow refuge (the current staple) or shadow step for the more daring.
the reason i personally cant stand venoms (specifically basilisk venom) is because you only get a certain amount of hits and they go away but thats not entirely the problem. the problem is if an enemy dodges, blocks, or ANYTHING….. the venom goes away.

it looks like a SYLVARI skill!!! its soooo irritating. also when you use scorpion wire and basilisk venom, the basilisk venom stops the pull…. i feel it shouldnt stop the pull at all.
technically engi doesn’t need a weapon either. kits are MORE than enough for them. so i dont get the point in this.
