While my Human Mesmer did go the Nobility personal-story route, I dislike stereo-types with a fervent passion, no matter which class they’re applied to. Open your mind to the possibilities; Mesmers don’t have to just be royalty, they’re often street-performers as well. No class is “just” one stereotypical thing thing.
You may be whatever you like outside zerg, if you’re running with zerg, you’re either as tanky as you could be utility bot, either another point of rally. It is zerg that makes your server win at this state of wvw, not roamers.
So by your reasoning, then every class is simply a bot in a zerg, cause in a zerg every class is expected to do certain things. Necros are expected to do Conditions, Eles to drop fire/water fields, Warriors to Banner Supervisors/allies, Guardians to spam 1 buff with Staff 4, cut off escapes with staff #5…
Mesmers are simply more noticeable because the things they do have a much more noticeable effect because they are the only class that can do them. Our poison is that people reduce us to “just Veil/Portal bots” and tell us that if we want to do anything else we should re-roll. I resent that. We do more than that, and I want people to know that we are more than our unique skills.
I seriously can’t be bothered to read this. If you think Mesmer is useless in WvW, you are probably the worst Mesmer/WvW player EVER. Let’s take a look, shall we?
Veil: Line that grants stealth to ANY NUMBER of people who run across it. Used every single day by Mesmers to do more than any Warrior could to help the zerg.
Feedback: AoE reflects. Can be traited to last longer and have shorter CD. Just amazing skill in WvW.
Traited Focus: MOAR reflects. Just good.
Null Field: Boonstrip and/or Condition cleanse. Oh and it’s AoE.
Literally the ONLY thing you have right, OP, is that Mesmers are very slow, and must sacrifice to get speed (Run Focus/Blink/Staff and trait them as needed).
Mesmer is far from bad in WvW, and if you think they are, I suggest not blaming the class for your obvious shortcomings.
Edit: Oh, and the list I gave you? That’s only the beginning of what a Mesmer brings to WvW. Look in the Mesmer section and find all the builds made for WvW and the videos linked to them, then tell me Mesmer is bad.
Normally yes, but if you can make the Thief backstab your clone, then he’s revealed and you can /laugh at him
Veil/portal bots, sir.
Better use guardian for all zerg needs.
Some wvw-centric guilds punish players by forcing them on mesmer. I think this says it all.
Buzz off lol. Mesmers are NOT just Portal/Veil bots, although those are two very strong utilities that a Mesmer can bring to a zerg.
1. Tagging can be very difficult for a Mesmer as we have very limited AoE abilities. However, this is balanced by the fact that Mesmer can bring a boat-load of reflection to a zerg fight (Feedback, traited Focus, traited f4, Mirror heal).
1b: There are a lot of ways to go about this. I’d suggest just looking around the forums for a build that suits you.
2. YES. I do it all the time on my Mes with this build (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Build-Glamourous-Medic). However there are a TON of reflect builds out there; ones that focus on crit chance/dmg to boost reflects, ones like the Medic build that focuses on team support, someone has even created an interrupt/Glamour build for zerging. The list just goes on and on.
3. One word: Focus(preferably traited). And Blink if you can fit it in your build. Mostly the traited Focus, since that lets you Swift yourself if you fall behind. Some Mesmers use Centaur or Air runes to get 100% Swiftness uptime, but that’s not always reasonable.
All in all, Mesmer is a VERY versatile class capable of specializing into many different roles in a zerg; find the one that you like, build for it, and dominate!
I believe condition cleanses work on a first on-last-out basis; Eg: I apply Burning on you, then Torment, and you use Mender’s Purity. Torment is removed since it was the last condition put on you. At least, I think that’s how it works. This should be easy to test though.
Looks pretty good. The only thing that bothers me slightly is the Signet of Midnight. I understand its use, but I think Blink or Veil would be a better choice. Obviously this is personal preference.
If you wanted, you could try a variant of this build where you drop 0-10 out of Dom, and 10-20 out of Insp to go 20 deep into Chaos for Bountiful Interruption. With the amount of interrupts you’ll be putting out with Focus/Staff, in a zerg situation you could easily maintain 25 stacks of Might(35 cond dmg a stack for a total of 875@ 25).
This would boost your confusion damage through the roof, as you could use Focus #4 pull and/or Staff #5 in the middle of the zerg to hit the might cap, then throw out your Glamours for max damage.
However to achieve all this you’d lose Signet cds, and/or 1/2 of your weapon specials.
(Theorycrafting inc; feel free to skip to the end for TL;DR sum-up)
/theorycraft start
If you perform this combo for 25 might and end in Scepter/Focus, you’d have 2653 cond dmg meaning 264 dmg per stack, and since your interrupt confusion applies 5 stacks, that would tick for 1320 dmg a skill.
Note: If you drop Scepter trait you’d lose 200 cond dmg (Equivalent to ~5-6 Might stacks), meaning confusion would do 249 dmg a stack (Interruptions causing 5 stacks doing 1245 a skill; 75 dmg difference)
/theorycraft end
>>>>>>Tl;DR: Currently your Confusion is doing 183dmg a stack in Staff, 198 in Scepter meaning you’ll be gaining at best 66 dmg a stack, and at worst 51 dmg a stack by making these changes.<<<<<<<<<<<<
P.S: Base might duration for Bountiful Interruption is 10 seconds (In reality 12 because of 20 points in Chaos). With all your +cond duration, your confusions will last anywhere between 1 stack of 8.5 sec confusion(blind) to 5 stacks of 21 second Confusion (interrupts)
P.P.S. Sadly, the runes are immensely stronger than our Glamours are T_T… That hurts Anet.
If this happens, I would sooo dust off my Thief and just plop myself in between the event and the spawn and just enjoy the loot bags ^.^ Then come on the forums and savor the QQ-filled tears of people who came into WvW for PvE and got murdered >:D
On a serious note though… If Living Story were to be implemented, I would want it to be so that you could only access it through controlling another server’s keep, whatever this content may be. No PvE crap that’d detract from the spirit of WvW. Maybe a jumping puzzle or something… Really, options for putting LS in WvW are very, very limited without ruining both the story and WvW, to the point that it’s not even worth it.
Phantasms really should not be dodgeable for aforementioned reasons, and because if you think about it, most Mesmers will only have access to two Phantasms; One on their primary weaponset, another on their off-set(Max 4 if you burn 2 utility slots on lack-luster Phants). All players have 2 dodges, so if Phantasms were dodgeable, Phantasm Mesmers would be SCREWED.
Think about it. The Mesmer would be forced to draw out your invulns, your blinds, AND your dodges before summoning. There are very few attacks from a Mesmer that you would dodge:
Sword 2 (If the Mesmer didn’t root you)
Scepter 3
Staff #5
Nothing on Greatsword
Nothing on Focus
Torch 4.
Nothing on Pistol (Stun happens too quickly and doesn’t last long enough to get a Phantasm off).
At best you could make them burn 4 dodges, if they even dodge at all (Sword 2 you can walk out of, Scepter 3 can just be cleansed, Torch 4 is pretty hard to dodge especially if they run Sword main-hand to root you prior to the burn going off), meaning you can only reliably make them burn 1 dodge (Staff 5).
If this change were to happen, Phantasm Mesmers would be forced to devote 1-2 more utility slots to iDefender/iDisenchanter to make people dodge those “attacks” in order to get off their actual attacks; no other class has to burn 2 utility slots to do this.
TL;DR: Making Phantasms dodgeable would not affect non-Phantasm specs at all since they are merely bonus damage there, but would screw over pure Phant specs and be very much akin to the Confusion nerf that halted Glamour-bomb builds.

In addition to what’s already been stated in the OP, a while ago Phase Retreat (Staff 2) was changed to teleport you away from your target, not backwards, so if you and your opponent are likethis:
(C = critter Y = you T = them)
Y ___T (Running —-> that way)
You can target a critter or other mob behind you
C___ Y______T
And use Phase Retreat to act as a second Blink to get close
C______Y-T
At this stage you can cast Chaos Storm on them (or preferably both of you since you’ll have a chance at Swiftness) since it causes Chill on them, which is a 66% move speed reduction. Since they’re running, it’s safe to assume they have low hp, and since you seem to be running a condi build, you should be able to spike conditions on them (Lots of Confusion is definitely preferable as they will be spamming skills to get away).
Good luck and I hope this helps
P.S: Credit to Osicat’s vids on Youtube for teaching me this trick
I’m curious as to why you’ve chosen Sword-Mainhand in both weapon sets. How do you deal with the shared CDs, and what do you do if you’re ever forced out of melee range? Also, with Sharper Images, wouldn’t iZerker do more dmg than iSwordsman simply due to bleed? Why the Dazzling minor in Dom? Is the vuln really good enough to justify not putting those 5 into Inspiration which gives a lot more utility?
The footage we gained from that portal bomb was well worth it! <3
that’s more like when you’re the orb carrier in old WvW o_o
I loled so hard watching that cause that is EXACTLY how the orb-running was XD
I personally enjoy using names that are lore-relevant (Sylvari having no last name, only first name and maybe a title, Asurans having 1-2 syllable names with double-consonants, etc) I love seeing people with joke names (I saw a Norn named Mr. I Pity The Fool once), but I personally go with lore-specific names.
My 3 Mesmer names are Daheri(Human) Shoshana Mistfang(Charr) Neurologist Fizz(Asuran).
Depending on race, I would suggest, if you’re going for lore-specific names, something that hints at Mesmer (I used Mistfang for my Charr and Neurologist for my Asuran as Mesmer Phantasms look like the Mist weapons and neurology is the science of the brain/nervous system), or something that is just a name (I went with just regular old Daheri on my Human).
One funny thing I saw, was a Mesmer named “Illusionary Akayuna” whose clones shared her name and made me do a double-take cause I was like “What kind of Phantasm is THAT?” before I realized it was just a clone of her.
I also once had a Sylvari Mesmer named “Acetarius Rubescus”, which means “Pink Salad” in Latin cause he was all pink XD I ended up deleting him and making my Asuran though. (Feel free to steal this if you want to. My guildies got a kick out of it. You can also change the ius/us at the ends to a’s if you want to make it female)
Hope this helped, and good luck with your Mesmer name
Just got on my lvl 19 Mesmer and spawned 3 staff clones; killed over a dozen mobs and haven’t seen a single Fear proc. Could it be a bug with the 4-rune-bonus for the Rune of Perplexity incorrectly proccing Fear when our Clones attack rather than or in addition to the confusion that we apply on hit?
Lol all you guys taking this so seriously. Those were some baaaad Mesmers. Even with our recent nerfs, Mesmer is still my favorite class. Also, I’m barely feeling the nerfs (although admittedly I main a Power Mesmer. I had planned on a Glamour Mesmer alt for when I got bored and wanted to zerg WvW, but after the confusion nerf it was like “Screw dat.” The alt now sits in sPvP. Doing nothing.)
Also: THANK YOU ANET for FINALLY fixing our iZerker. Took you long enough :P
As a Sylvari lover, I made my Engineer Sylvari, and I never regretted it. Engi’s a ton of fun, and being Sylvari made me love it even more simply because that’s my favorite race. But I also do a lot of WvW, and Sylvari Racials are just amazing for it. You get a 7 second Immobilize, which is also a 2 second toolbelt Block that can be reduced by points in the Tools line. The Seed Turret is very nice, and becomes a 900 range knockdown on your toolbelt; great for catching runners(Especially if you do Turret + Roots, as you can knockdown then immob). And of course, you can’t forget the elites. Fern Hound is amazing for applying Bleed/Poison (Circumstantial, ofc), Take Root is great for the invuln and several seed turrets. Haven’t used the Druid Spirit, but I plan to!
Our elites also synergize with a CCgineer, since as I mentioned you can chain even more knockdowns and immobs into your rotation.
Also: Asura Racials SUCK. So Sylvari, Sylvari Sylvari. Sylvari all the way baby (See what I did thar?)
If that happens, it will be at least in part because SF would rather attack us in our borderlands than DR
Obviously I can’t speak for my entire server, but every time I’ve been on, our Commanders(or at least the ones I see) are actively directing us away from ET and in our voip channel, they’re telling us to leave ET alone and focus on DR.
Myself and my guild actually have never stepped foot into ET’s BL this week, and instead have been focusing 100% on EBG and DR BL (And, if I may add, you guys need to defend your stuff better. I almost never see your third of EBG green, although obviously I don’t know the conditions on your server, and you may just lack the people to do so, in which case, you have my sympathy cause I remember the feeling.)
lol Sorrows Furnace , Isle has played you for fools. This whole team up on Darkhaven thing has been a well thought out plan….
Isle figures it can trounce you down the stretch…so they make a deal that sounds good to SF " hey lets double team darkhaven , it will be awesome and ponies will fall from the clouds" Isles only intention was to get through reset weekend when they are awful. Hoping the double team would put DH far back in third , then Isle can pull SF during the week for the win.
Sorrow, you have been used as a meat shield army to boost Isle to first. its starting to look like eve online up in here….
jaxx
To be honest, we expected nothing less. All 3 teams should be playing for first, and no alliance is permanent. Do what makes sense to get your team higher is the name of the game. DH was dominating our 2 servers, so we teamed up on them to get them down. Now that DH is below us, (Hopefully they still are; I haven’t been on since last night) we go back to the free-for-all mindset. Nothing new there.
We like your Garrison, DH Oh, and you might want to watch your Bay.

Open on Jade Quarry at time of posting
OPEN on Kaineng; not sure for how long though!
Best one I’ve seen so far would be a Norn Warrior with the mohawk hair named ‘Mr. I Pity The Fool’ < Was so funny cause he looked almost exactly like Mr. T.
Screenie of me(the Mesmer) and my guildie with the NEW Keep Lord in the background after ninja’ing Etheron Hills from Eredon Terrace mere minutes after they capped it. Y’all need to sweep for Mesmers better XD
P.S. No I am not saying where I hid XD That’s a server secret
Some pics of my Mes, both solo and with some very handsome friends
P.S: Thank you Mystic for the info on how to get the phantasms all lined up and normal looking
