My Ranger Build/Playstyle Viable in Fractals?

Never said I was a special cookie, and I’m rarely very far from melee range. And please, I can’t explain how annoying it is when a zerk just keeps dying and then just doesn’t contribute anything. Constantly picking them up and trying to protect them. I’ve seen a few zerks who were good with it, but it’s a rare sight.

If what I do starts to become a hindrance, I’ll change my setup, obviously, but until then, as long as I am finishing and keeping people alive, I’ll stick with this and be a ranger that ISN’T useless

There is plenty of damage going on between direct and condi. And like I said, I finish the fights when teammates can’t stay alive. I’ll take this over max DPS and getting rolled over in two seconds. People are useless if they are dead all the time.

I am currently a part of a small guild made by a friend, but we are the only two left who are ever on. He to, will be searching for another guild, so I may be able to convince him to join with me.

I have been getting more into fractals and am currently at lvl 20, but looking to go higher.
10,000 achievement points if that matters. I have all professions at lvl 80 and all geared, yes I am an altoholic =)

I like to do dungeons and if I have time, will probably never refuse to help out a guildie
I do some WvW and prefer to do small group roaming instead of zerging.
I get bored a lot, so if someone needs help with various things, I’m there.

Also, though I will most likely be representing the guild 95 percent of the time, I don’t want the 100% rep requirement.

Prefer a guild with friendly environment and kinda chillax and fun.

I can answer any other questions if needed.

I don’t like to come on here looking for builds that other people like. I usually just create my own and build it to my style of play(which changes for each profession) However, when it comes to the ele, I just can’t make a build I like, so I am coming to you others ele’s who have more or less mastered the profession. Besides the thief, this is the only class left for me to become good with. Or at least make my self useful when rolling with a party. I’ll admit, I most likely just suck with this profession and that’s probably why I don’t like it… yet. Soooo, I need help.

I really don’t want to do any healer bunker type role, as my guardian is more than enough for me. Are there any Ele’s out there who can suggest some things?

I really do want to like the ele, but I need help =) I’ve been playing this game like it’s my job and have all classes lvl 80. Just can’t find a way to properly suit the ele to my liking. HELP! If possible, don’t just post builds and leave it at that. How you use your ele would be awesome. >_>

I main a Ranger and so far have not had any real problems in fracs. If what you run starts to fail or you feel useless, you can always try this. I use PvT gear with dolyak runes. Zerk weapons(greatsword and axe/warhorn) Personally, I run celestial trinkets for extra everything. my traits are

10 II
15 V
30 V VII XII
0
15 VI

My pets are Black Moa and Lynx. I am often the last person to die if things go bad, and I sometimes have to solo the last half of bosses, at least with a bad group.(I swap greatsword for shortbow for bosses.) Plenty of damage and survivability. I only use my moa for helping other teammates if tey are in trouble. I do a lot of retargeting and switching pets. As long as you use your pets right, you’ll be fine. Leave it on guard and use its attack at right times. Healing spring and warhorn 5 for a quick blast heal when others in trouble.

It’s both fun and satisfying when you are the last one standing or the one saving your teammates.

That all probably sounds all over the place, but this build is amazing when played right and pets are used correctly.

Let me start off by saying I love the idea of the LW. For the most part it keeps me entertained. Unfortunately, it doesn’t keep me entertained for long. I think the stories themselves should be slightly extended and way more in depth. Maybe 3-4 week intervals between LW updates? I think that would be enough time for everyone to enjoy the content at a decent pace. Especially the gamers who can’t make it on everyday.

Also, I understand that maybe mass stuns and immobilizes was probably an attempt to put a stop to zergs or whatever, but it creates an extremely, extremely frustrating time when one wants to do the LW with just a few friends. I’m one of those people who hate running with the zerg, so naturally I have some malice towards the way some LW is done. I really haven’t a clue how this can be fixed(stopping zergs from face rolling everything) but I’m sure you guys can think of something.

It’s just not fun constantly being stunned and immobilized and not actually being able to use my class skillfully. Oh, and I believe I’m not the only one here who despises this whole being one shotted for making one mistake. I understand paying for making mistakes, but insta-kill is just not cool.

Personally, I would like to see more use of unique mechanics in LW. Not just for epic boss battles, but actual open world mechanics that involve actual thinking and making use of certain profession skills. Again, Zergs would be able to just ruin the fun of it once people understand it, but it could still be a good step forward and maybe eventually even help you guys better understand a way to put the nerf-hammer to the zerg mind. I think special mechanics in the open world is key to making this LW thing even better. It creates fun and challenge.

Also, I think Living world is the PERFECT opportunity to help us understand more about the “missing” lore of, oh idk… GW1? Loved that game and it’s lore and things felt so well connected. Yea, people can just go read about what happened to the Gods, if you ever tell us, but people like me would much rather play perhaps a glimpse into the past. It’s a good chance to put the GW1 players mind at ease as well as enlightening the minds of those who haven’t played it.

SO, I don’t even know if any of that makes a lick of sense, and it’s all probably in a crap order, but that’s just me.

Love the game, I spend a lot of my free time, if not all of it, playing this game. I’m not going anywhere, but let’s see some changes for the better.

What us Ranger’s really need is an elite trap.
IDK what kind, but it would certainly be nice.

Something like say, The Ranger throws three traps down one in front, one slightly to the left and one slightly to the right.

As far as what they can do, I have no idea. I just want an elite trap that does this.

So, my Gift of Thorns is in my inventory as you can see(if the pic isn’t being dumb), and it refuses to show up in the forge window. To top it off, My ori ingots, cured leather, and vicious fangs will not combine together, no matter what order I put them in. So as it stands right now, I am unable to make my Wolf Statue, to make my Gift of the Howler.

Is there something I can do to fix this myself? Could I have done something wrong? Anyone have any advice or knowledge on the subject? >_>

Positive to being a Ranger: Victory is so much sweeter in WvW when you achieve it =)

I 1v3 some FA kids, and maybe they were slightly bad, but I still beat them alone. Dancing over their bodies… Ugh… it just makes me feel alive.

There are plenty of upsides to being a Ranger and having played all of the classes thoroughly, I think I have a bit of an edge on some people. If you can understand how classes work, you can beat them. It’s not just about understanding how your own class works. Only thing that maybe needs work in my opinion is some pet AI; but I do just fine as of right now. I can be patient a while longer.

Finally some one who is not crying about our class. Everywhere I go it’s QQ this and QQ that. They just can’t be satisfied. I’ve played all the other classes and find the Ranger to be the funnest by far, while still being effective.

Doesn’t matter which aspect of the game I am playing in, I do just fine. The most recent “nerf” on the quickness mechanic isn’t all that bad. While I notice a slight change, it’s not enough to rage like all the other players are.

I think people just need to learn how to use a ranger.

I’m not sure if this has ever been discussed, but it is something I would love to see, if not already in game. I haven’t seen any, so if anyone has, let me know.

I think it would be kinda awesome to have events start in one map, take you across said map and possibly take you through another map or two. Of course this would make for some crazy long chains, but could also be fun. Also, the end reward for doing something like this would have to be worth it >_<

I know it’s not top priority stuff, but for future content, I think it could work especially in the end maps.

Dealing with shady players in fractals?

Good to see people have our backs in this. I was apart of this group(one of the guildies). Granted, I was having an off day, I never die like I did with these two kids. One kept rushing in while we were waiting for people to catch up from falling on jumping parts. A couple times I was forced to “help” him and ended up downed an necessary amount of times.

Aside from that, though, when they decided to kick our friend for having fun, they didn’t bother whispering Storm(OP) or myself( probably knowing full well we wouldn’t boot our own guildie.)

It really is a broke system for kicking people.

I really don’t see how the Guardian needs to really be changed in any way at the moment. The Class does exactly what it is supposed to do. It supports, whether you deal out damage, roll around healing people or shouting out buffs on the constant.

The Guardian is(what my friend refers to it as) a ROFL Character. He gets it from my reactions when we do dungeons or whatever. I don’t believe some of the things we get away with. We are very versatile.

Some people just need to learn that because one small thing doesn’t work in favor of making us way OP, that it makes our class broke. Far from the case.

I am so glad I have learned this. Now, does this apply only to the guardian, or for everyone next to the shield? Also, would it be good, in situations where projectiles rule, to bring along wall of Reflection and throw it up right after, or would it be smarter to have a shout or something?

It applies to everyone. If you have more than one guardian, you can stack, set up a rotation and have almost constant protection for the entire party.

And yes, in fights where it’s worth bringing SotA I always bring WoR as well, since they serve the same function. It’s usually wise to drop WoR first, though, since it has a shorter cooldown and actually reflects attacks rather than absorbs them.

Can’t wait to try this out. Thank you

Spirit shield is very, very, very powerful in fractals.

I’ll be honest, I’ve never used spirit weapons unless I was goofing around in low-level areas. Could you go into detail how the shield works in fractals. Like, does it raise your toughness, or help you block more? I’m curious >_> anything to make fractals easier will catch my attention.

In quite a lot of fractals there are fights where enemies throw tonnes of projectiles around, and even more of them as you continue to scale up, the spirit shield is a fairly long lasting projectile shield, so you can use it, stand near it, and ignore all the ranged mobs pretty much.

I am so glad I have learned this. Now, does this apply only to the guardian, or for everyone next to the shield? Also, would it be good, in situations where projectiles rule, to bring along wall of Reflection and throw it up right after, or would it be smarter to have a shout or something?

It’s not my attitude, it’s ArenaNet’s. Whenever they’ve described combat and dungeons in the past, they’ve deliberately set time aside to discuss how players switching roles in combat (in this particular way) is an integral part of their system. Not my fault if you don’t like it.

Never said I didn’t like it. I don’t care how people play. Sometimes it works for them and sometimes it doesn’t. If anything, I find it interesting and slightly enjoyable to watch how some people play.

The only thing I don’t like, is when someone say “You’re playing the game wrong.” Especially when so many people play so many ways. Because you “think” the game should be played a certain way doesn’t make it right.

If I excel at what I am doing and how I go about it, then I am obviously doing something right. And that goes for every other class as well. Just because they explain a mechanic or class a certain way does not mean that’s the only way.

One of the great things about this game. You can adapt almost anything to the way you like to play. Just takes a little tweaking.

Have fun playing wrong then. The name of the game in GW2 is bob and weave, and dodging in and out of melee-mid is how the guardian was designed. Dodge in -> attack -> dodge out -> support -> repeat.

Bob and Weave? The name of the game is to have fun and play “How you want to.” There is no wrong way. Like I said, I stay up close and personal, dodge up close and make sure myself and my warrior are all set. My group very rarely ever run into problems. I’d be lying if I said i never do, and so would anyone else.

Take your “playing the game wrong” attitude somewhere else. No wrong way, No right way.

Philosophy of builds...what's yours?

in Guardian

Posted by: Azuriel.9137

Azuriel.9137

Right now, I’m running dungeons trying new builds both posted by others and my own variations of things. However, my own personal playstyle that I love is Immortal. I have all clerics gear so my healingpower is nice and high. It helps that my friend(warrior) and I have worked our characters perfectly to work for each other. As a guardian(main) My main focus is keeping me and the warrior alive. Multiple warriors if that’s how the party worked out. My symbold are larger and heal allies, plus my dodge roll. My passive regen goes to allies. My mace heals me nicely and my warrior if he happens to pass me =P.

I almost never leave focoused battle field unless I need to. This way, I’m both putting out decent damage to the main cluster/boss and keeping mainly myself and warrior(s) healed. With the right kinda warrior, we keep each other alive a lot easier.

That’s my playstyle, anyways. Keep myself and warrior(s) alive and buffed and still keep aggro. That mostly keeps pressure off any ranged fighters. Usually at the most they get a single enemy which they should be able to handle. If its a single boss, a ranged fighter should know enough to dodge by watching movements.

Haven’t really had trouble with this playstyle yet, and my warrior loves me >_<

note to new Guardians "you are not a healer"

in Guardian

Posted by: Azuriel.9137

Azuriel.9137

I kind of feel like a Guardian strictly hanging back and only healing would be useless. Kensai is right on that note. We simply can’t support a team from the backlines, waiting to put boons at the right time and laying symbols to heal heal allies… especially when everyone is constantly moving.

I myself “mainly” run a tough/healing build, but I am always at the front line. My main focus is on throwing out as much damage as possible and keeping my warrior( or any other up front fighters I have with me. If any guardians run a healing type build, that’s mostly how it should be done. You keep yourself and you warrior constantly healed and buffed. Any ranged fighters, should have the skill to be able to watch a boss’ movements and dodgeroll.

Guardians are very good healers, but only on the frontline for yourself and whoever happens to be close to you, which should be other guardians or warriors. Even when facing multiple mobs, A guardian and warrior should be able to round them up and keep “most” pressure off the ranged fighters.

Kensai did make a good point, and some people took it the wrong way. I’ll admit, I did at first as well and initially was like… “Ah hell no.” Then realized >_<

Changes to aegis

You really can’t make Aegis any better without making it OP. It’s fine the way it is. There are plenty of skills and runes and utilities to protect you from multi hits, and if you don’t know how to use them, you probably shouldn’t be playing as a guardian. Hell, we have a couple ways to give party members Aegis already, and that in itself is already powerful.

If you can’t handle a multi-hit from a single target, dodge roll. It’s there for a reason.

(BUILD) Selfish Guardian?

Azuriel.9137

Well, I’ve been using Immortal for quite some time, focusing on keeping heals on myself and others, but my HP was only 14k. It was awesome, but I wanted somewhat of a change and to have some fun with my class. So I decided to switch it up. Now, I’m not worrying about rushing to heal someone. Instead, my health mostly doesn’t move(from what I have have seen in the few hours ive tried it.) All heals, big and small, are completely focused on me 100% of the time.

I guess it feels like more of a hybrid. Because it can tank very well and at the same time, I do incredible damage. At least that’s how it feels compared to what I have been doing. Of course there is always ways to build upon something making it better, which is what I’m looking for.

EDIT
I have just changed Unscathed Contender to “Vengeful” for longer retaliation.

Also, under Honor, I have switched to “Superior Aria” for quicker shouts and “Two handed mastery.”

Everyone will have to bear with me on this post, I’ve never done this before >_<

Also, I haven’t seen this anywhere, and based on what the playstyle felt like, I am dubbing this “Selfish Guardian” until someone finds this build elsewhere >_>

I’ve recently come up with a build and so far it seems to be working. I haven’t seen it posted anywhere else, but that’s not to say some others are not already using it. Anyways, I will post the build and gear below and was wondering if someone out there, hopefully besides me, could take it for a test run and help me better it. Put yourself in multiple situations to get the full feel for the build. Push it to the limits.

Protector’s Impact – Greatsword Power – Zealous Blade
Zeal – 30-(III)— (VII)—(XII)

Radiance – 0

Valor – 0
Writ of Exaltation – Writ of Persistence – Writ of the Merciful
Honor – 30—-(III)—(VII)—(X)
Unscathed Contender
Virtues – 10— (I)

Gear-
All armor pieces specs are power/toughness/vitality, power being the highest stat. All equipped with Superior Rune of the Soldier. The runes stats are vit and tough, with the sixth stat being “Shouts remove a condition”

All accessories are sapphire orichalcum, stats being power/tough/healing power. Each also equipped with exquisute sapphire jewel, again, healing/power/tough. ((Still working on getting my back piece))

Weapons-
Greatsword and Mace/Shield. Stats are Power/tough/healingpower

On my mace I have sigil of Life which gives +10 healing for every kill(stacks to 25)
Shield has Sigil of energy, which gives vigor when swapping to set while in combat.

And it seems I have forgot to put anything on my greatsword =0 will figure that out when i go back.

After all that my stats are as follows.

Power – 2003
Precision -941
Toughness -1668
Vitality -1605

Attack – 3103
Critical Chance – 5%
Armor – 2879
Health – 17695
(HealingPower) -940

Utilities
6 Signet of Resolve
7 Signet of Judgement
8 Stand Your Ground
9 Save Yourselves
0 Renewed Focus
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

I haven’t had a real chance to use it yet, being the holidays and all, but so far it hasn’t failed me. I soloed a champion ooze and his cronies, but that’s not really saying much. It took a bit but with all the mini heals i gather from GS attacks, my health was pretty much at a constant the whole time, until he stunned me, to which my health really never dropped below 50%. I also went to an area where there was a ridiculous amount of enemies, I believe at Temple of Grenth. The more enemies the more heals and seemed my health dropped even less. Of course, I switched to my mace/shield for more dodge ability and heals. I plan on touching up some dungeons to see how this works out.

If any guardians have the time or curiosity and want to give it a go and give me some input, I’d appreciate it.
