Plain and simple this system is a safety net for stopping crazy farming when people find exploits that make each run super fast. We are also addressing those loopholes, but that takes time and new ones might always be discovered. If you and your group do the dungeons without skipping large sections and run different chains this system shoul(bugs aside) never impact you.
Addendum for clarity, super fast means < 30 minutes, and even then you must hit that speed multiple times in a row before you start seeing any impact.
What I find disturbing is that it seems you (developers) seem to most assume that people who like to farm are exploiters. They are two different things, exploiters find a glitch or bug in the system and use it to their advantage. Farmers just play a lot. I understand to punish exploiters, but don’t punish farmers in the process. The same thing goes with farming karma or materials out in the PvE world, you should not be punishing people who play a lot. Things like this will eventually kill the game because of the restrictions.
I have not run many dungeons (full time job and other interests like drinking and hanging out with friends take up quite a bit of my time.) so I have not personally felt the pain of the DR system they set in place. However, from reading the posts it seems to be an issue lots of people are having and are opposed against. I think Anet has good intentions with a system like this, but even good intentions cause unintentional damage that is possibly worse than the original issue. I think an easier fix is to do something like what WoW had. Each boss only gives a certain amount of tokens, like 5-10, and everyday for one time you can get an additional 40-60 extra tokens for completing it. So you can run the 8 different dungeons, one time and get the bonuses for all 8, and you can go back to the ones you want to do over and over and just get the 5-10 tokens per boss you fight. That way you can reward those who do the dungeons once a day with a nice boost of tokens, but also allow those who want to run multiple times some incentive to keep doing it. A DR system in the end hurts more than it helps.

I take responsibility for making my post about your OP as stupid, I apologize it sounds harsh. But the point that it’s purely a personal issue still stands. If you die in WvW, take the few secs to find the res point for free and then leave, preferably leave the WvW zone first so someone else can get in faster. This is in no way a failed or failing system, it is not automatically forcing you out of the game when you die, nor is it restricting you from ressing at the home WP. If either case before was true then yes I would agree that the system should be corrected, but since neither is the case, the system/function of ressing via WP is not a failed system. Just because you and other people are to lazy to click on a free WP for res, only taking 2-5 secs of your time, does NOT mean the system is broken. That just means you are to lazy, plain and simple. Also with regards to the last sentence of your OP “Atm it feels like you’re punishing me for forgetting.” If you forget to res and then later have to pay to res yourself when you could have done it for free, you are the one punishing yourself for forgetting, not Anet. Take responsibility for your own actions and choices.

If you lose gold by doing this then it is your own fault. Sorry, but there are other more important issues that need to be addressed. It sounds like you are just having a personal problem with remembering to res after dying, it is not a system issue or functionality issue. You are having a player issue, cannot be fixed by developers.
I really like this idea, but for Anet to make this good for them as well. Lets say that every character has one weapon set available, then each additional weapon set costs like 400 or 600 gems or something, that way Anet can get some profit from it. I am not sure if this was brought up but I think with each weapon set you can also reset your traits to match up with the weapons you choose. That way if you have a trait build set for Greatswords and rifles, switching to sword/shield and longbow combo doesn’t kitten you effectiviness wise.
I wanna say it is more about the skin than the stats, as you said the stats are not up to par with other 80 gear. I agree that the skin is pretty much over priced, I mean it takes a HUGE jump in price from tier 2 to tier 3. They should bring it down.
Idk what you guys are doing but I have yet to have any travel cost problems, lvl 53 and have 3+ gold. If you go around and clear an area that is designed for your lvl, you will not only get the 20-30+ silver for the completion. But you will also get lots of loot and money from drops off enemies along the way. The WP cost is needed for gold sinks, if they had to do something about it I would rather they just decrease it. However you don’t know that maybe after 2-3 months the costs now would really be trivial. It could be that after some months the average amount of money by say lvl 20 is 1g and by lvl 40 5g.
So I heard form either an article, AMA, or a video that AN is going to add the great axe (don’t see why it wasn’t added in the first place.) with an upcoming patch post launch. I think they should add other weapons as well. Two I think will work really well in this game are Crossbows, two-handed range weapon. Lore reason is that it is the tech between bows and guns. Professions to use it would be imo, Thiefs, Engineers, rangers, maybe Ele’s or Warriors. Another weapon would be Polearms, because polearms are bad*** need i say more? Warriors and gardians could use it. rangers possibly, maybe thiefs. I could see Ele’s or Necros using it as well.
