Pistol whip should not be able to be used while moving, because as it is, we evade attacks while we’re slicing away at them. PW would be super OP if we can move (even slowly) while attacking, and while evading attacks.

It was pretty hard for me until my mid-thirties… when I got more skills unlocked and new methods to kill enemies.

Don’t be afraid to experiment! I was a dagger/dagger + shortbow thief in PvE for a while, thinking that this is THE BEST, but for my play style, there were more effective means of dispatching enemies.

I recommend trying:

Sword/Pistol + Shortbow
Signet of Malice (heal) = heal on hit

Run up to a group of enemies and see how much life you can get back from them. Pistolwhip is GODLIKE because it hits each enemy nine times (Signet of malice gives you life per hit, per enemy), and the more enemies that surround you, the better heals you get. You can pretty much face-tank a group of enemies just by spamming pistol-whip… you’ll be surprised at what you can get away with.

(side note: if pistol whip is still this awesome AFTER the nerf, then people complaining that it’s next to useless now have some serious issues).

If you see an enemy about to unleash a HOLYSHOMFGBBQ attack, a quick tap of the #4 skill (headshot) would put a stop to that right away. It does practically no damage, but it can at least prevent you from taking damage by interrupting the enemy.

A good distance-closer is still the #2 skill, except it does more damage to enemies at full health than heart seeker. Plus, it allows you to shadow step back and CURES A CONDITION. Great condition removal here.

The one thing about this build is that unless you’re traited to stealth upon stealing, there isn’t a reliable way to go into stealth using initiative or your heals. If stealth is important to you in PvE (it isn’t so much for me), look into skills that do so.

Coming from a RANGER, listening to people kittening about this is just sad.

I’m playing a thief alt and it’s still one of the best damage dealing classes with high mobility, coupled with signet of malice and fast attacks also leads to great survivability, as long as you’re not a moron (though malice is much better for PvE than PvP).

For Assassin’s signet, simply activate it BEFORE hitting CnD → Steal and you’ll do similar damage at the end of the backstab combo. Just because you’re getting lower numbers from ONE attack doesn’t mean the higher numbers from the other 4 attacks (Mug, CnD, then heart seekers or auto attack to finish) can’t cancel it out.

And if you were relying on one HUGE, uncounterable attack to kill an enemy, then all that means is you’ll have to apply more skill to get your target. And if you were of the persuasion that backstab is easily counterable (it is, unless you use basilisk venom), then you’re obviously a good enough player to figure out other ways to kill people, just like all the other classes in this game.

I just want to echo Cyricus’ statements above regarding sword/pistol.

I haven’t played with pistol whip before the nerf, but kitten as amazing as it is now… I’m inclined to think that the nerf was warranted. I don’t want to get anyone mad, but seriously this skill is amazing for these reasons:

1. Decent damage. Not overpowered, but in line with the rest of the skills. Did the nerf impact the damage of PW? I don’t remember the patch notes or when they came.

2. 9 hits per enemy! NINE HITS! the first hit is the stun, and the next 4 attacks do two hits each. With the signet of malice and some points into healing (though i don’t think Healing scales as well as it should in this game), you’re simply not going down.

3. AoE damage – couple that with the nine hits per enemy AND the signet of malice, you’ll easily be healing yourself for a third of your health bar when you’re swarmed by enemies. I actually soloed two veteran harpy matriachs just by spamming pistol whip at them, thanks to the fact they spawn 3 little harpy adds that give me more health.

4. You evade when you’re pistol-whipping. I don’t think it says this in the tooltip, but as you’re busy slicing away, you evade all attacks.

5. You can “pre-cast” it like Cloak and Dagger, then use “Steal” to teleport to the enemy you want to lay the hurt on. Just hit 3 -> F1 for SURPRISE PISTOL WHIP PARTY!

So this is why Sword/Pistol easily replaced my dagger/dagger solo PvE build.

I use shortbow as my swap… cluster bombs are also great with signet of malice: remember, it’s life PER HIT, PER ENEMY. So if you ’splode the bomb over a group of enemies, you can get a LOT of life back. Plus, the cripple is great for kiting champion mobs.

If you’re using Quickening Zephyr, go for sigil of earth.

if you are wondering, the quickness boon does NOT stack. If you proc the sigil of rage on a crit, then two seconds later decide to use QZ (say you didn’t see that you already have 3 s of quickness), then the quickness will end after another 1 second. That is to say: once the first quickness boon ends, all your quickness boons end, regardless of how much time you should have left.

Another example: if you hit QZ for a 4-second quickness boon and the first hit procs the sigil of rage, you will only get 3 seconds of quickness instead of 4 (or even 7).

What i would recommend for a quickness build: 2 s Quickness on pet swap + 20% faster pet swap (15 points beastmaster tree), and quickening zephyr. That way, you can get 2 seconds of quickness every 15 seconds when swapping pets (or every 48 seconds if the pet dies), and activate QZ right after the quickness ends for extra duration.

NOTE: Since MeTx was mistaken and no one offered an explanation, let me clarify here. Quickness is not the same as Swiftness. Swiftness makes you run faster (warhorn #5). Quickness doubles your attack/skill speed. Yes, it even doubles the speed at which you harvest nodes.

This is a nice feature, but considering it only takes several silver to repair all broken armor pieces at level 80, it’s not really a big priority.

Just replying to voice my support for an FOV slider.

and to the people arguing that an FOV slider will give an unfair advantage to people in PVP… just remember that there is multi-screen support (like eyefinity) in this game, so an FoV slider, if anything, will only even the playing field across all players.

Plus, it would be nice to play without getting a headache once in a while.

As a shortbow-equipped, condition-focused ranger (and easily able to get 20-25 bleeding stacks on my own), I wholeheartedly agree. Either removing the bleeding cap or making it per-player (they should be about similar in DPS considering it’s hard to maintain more than 25 bleeding stacks while solo) would greatly increase our viability in large group events.

I could switch to longbow for more ranged direct-damage, but it’s hard to spec out of condition damage when I’m already so heavily invested in it trait-wise. Plus, I just like the short bow better with its bleeding stacks

I second this. I thought I was doing something wrong, or completely misunderstood the tooltip. Glad to hear that it seems to be an issue.

Only once or twice have I seen my pet actually “revive me” (that is, have seen green numbers popping up) when using the Lick Wounds skill, out of the several dozen or so times Ive used it. I mostly roll with pig and cave spider, if that makes a difference.

What pets do you use for what purpose?

Charr and Norn at least have starting area bears. I think the Norn one is in the main city.
