Why is the tone and style of GW2 so "goofy"

This is something that has kinda bugged me from the get-go. The tone and style of Guild Wars 1 was fairly dark, post-searing… The dialogue was fairly serious, people talked about serious things. Even though the storyline was kinda disjointed, it still had an air of legitimacy. As the series “matured”, we saw a little bit more levity and comedy in the game – such as Kilroy Stoneskin – or the quest NPC in Factions who implies, more or less, that he needs you to help him get viagra to make his wife happy.

Guild Wars 2 seems to take everything a bit far. The entire game feels like one running gag after the next. The dialogue feels like parody more than something to be taken seriously. The asura, for god’s sake, are an entire race devoted to parody – everything they say is in the context of something outlandish, goofy, or absurd. It reminds me of when you clicked units in Warcraft too many times, and they said funny out-of-character things – well the entire game of GW2 feels like one big reel of out-of-character one-liners, inside jokes, and running gags.

The character of Tybalt, for example, is one running gag after the next. One mission involves him disguising himself, (via magic of course) as a woman and … talking like a woman… and just acting like a complete and total kitten I’m sure the GW2 writers thought all this was terribly clever, but I found it to be a bit tiresome. What I’m really saying is that I would have been much more receptive to some mature writing that actually treats the audience like they’ve got an above-average IQ.

The whole game feels like that guy who thinks he’s a whole lot funnier than he really is. He’s always elbowing you, making wisecracks at everything…. eh eh eh eh eh – It’s like for the love of god TAKE SOMETHING SERIOUSLY. Not everything is a gag, A-net. Not everything has to be some goofy inside joke. Can we get some actual writers to do some serious storylines for Guild Wars? You’ve got an enormous amount of lore in the Guild Wars universe and it feels like you haven’t tapped into any of it.

We get it, A-net … you can make a joke. But can you actually tell a compelling fantasy story? I guess we’ll see.

I loved the Tybald character. Much more than the other options. Ok, the big old Norn warrior was awesome too.

Tips/Advice for my Condi/Crit Engi?

I run this build and pretty much can stand against anything, including some Champions.

http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/engineer/?2|a.1o.h16.e.1o.h18|0.0.0.0.0.0|1n.719.1n.719.1n.719.1n.719.1n.719.1n.719|1b.62.1b.62.1b.62.1b.62.1b.62.1b.62|a5.u57b.0.u57b.0|21.7|e

This build is heavily based in the use of FT, but it also works with two pistols or pistol/shield if you get out of your kit for some reason.

Swap HGH for Cleaning Formula 409 and Elixir U for Elixir C when grouping so you can keep your party healthy and yourself buffed. With the high crit chance to apply vulnerability, bleeds and burns you’re going to do pretty decent damage (specially aoe) while also being able to take lots of hits and help your group. Also, the direct damage is not bad either.

I don’t do PvP so I have no idea if this build would work for that, but it is awesome for solo/group PvE.

Flamethrower is still not worth the slot

RIght, that’s a lot of back and forth. My two cents:

I carry three weapons on my engi. I have my pistol shield default. That lets me spam conditions against a single target. Bleed/Poison/Blind/Confuse/Burning(w/ Incindiary Ammo) will take down just about anything I’m going after in short order unless it’s a vet or higher, then it takes a few rounds of it.

Tool kit is for melee range. ’nuff said.

However, if I’m up against baddies with conditional resistances, or a BUNCH of baddies at once, it’s the Flamethrower all the way. Just being an AOE with good damage means I can hold down the sidestep key(a or d) and keep the camera moving so I circle around the targets and burn them up. I can hold my own against vets and champs solo this way and with some fancy footwork come out on top. There is nothing wrong with the FT. And pair it with the Net Turret to slow down your targets and you can completely outmaneuver everything on the field while keeping it in the hot seat, literally, until they fall over in flames.

Flamethrower is fine.

I agree with you. I’ve been using FT since I could and I love it. I used nades, toolkit and EG and I tought they were cool, but not my style. Since then, I learned how to use the FT and how to get around it’s many issues. I’m always the last man standing in a pull gone wrong, I’m the one ressing the awesome damaging ‘naders and I’m always the guy being hit by 5 mobs at the same time. All of this while doing realiabe and constant damage with my FT and my two pistols. I couldn’t do this if I were using other kit. Not because the kit being useless, but because it’s not my forté.

My point is, this is more an issue of L2P rather than the FT being worth the slot or not.

Also, the change to Flame Blast is awesome. I was already used to the distance of it’s detonation and could do awesome burst damage with it. Now, I can detonate it on melee range, usually 1 shotting everything. Good times indeed.

Check again. Every tree has a mission type at lvl 6 that doesn’t require commendations. The other ones are challenges or a harder version of the lvl 6 ones.

You’re mistaken. Not only do all of the unlocks except bounties require merits, they also require previous unlocks first. i.e. You have to unlock them sequentially, Bounties -> Treks -> Rushes, etc.

I would like to know where did you get that information (I’m not saying you’re wrong btw). But for what I could get by looking at the trees, you just have to research to lvl 6 and then unlock the “basic” version of the missions. The other ones down in the tree do require all that you mentioned.

Speaking of feedback, since ANet seems largely disinclined to comment about our posts, can I get the forum’s feed back on a simple fix? It regards the availability of non-War guild missions. Also please correct me if I’m just misinformed.

I only see one glaring issue with the guild missions.

Yes, you can train other non-PVP/Non-WvW mission types from other trees,… BUT they require guild commendations (or whatever the currency is called) to UNLOCK them.

The only way to get commendations is to train War to lvl5 and then run the distasteful (to ME, hence MY issue) PvP style guild missions to get the PvE missions unlocked.

Can’t we simply remove the commendation requirements from the other unlocks? If GW2 is supposed to be a game where you get to choose your own play-style, and play the game as you enjoy it – this seems to be very much the opposite.

The gold for influence, the time, that will come – big deal. But being forced into a direction I resent and do not enjoy is not what I expected from ArenaNet. Honestly I had had no “downsides” to admit when talking to other MMO gamers. This is my first, and since it a game called *Guild*Wars, I consider it a big one.

My Suggestion:
Remove commendation requirements from other unlocks. That is my humble and fervent suggestion. Please.

Comments? Suggestions? Insults? I’ll take any feedback at this point.

Thanks!

My only concern is that small guilds were completely left out. I play the game in a relaxed way, doing what I feel like when I feel like. I have a 2 person guild with my girlfriend. We already have a treasure trove and some other upgrades, so we know that we have to put some effort on it. But we’re fine with it, we don’t want the hassle of dealing with too much people and potential guild drama.

We were excited about guild missions and we knew it was going to require time and effort. But after seeing the requirements of the missions we felt completely and utterly discouraged and left out. There’s no possible way we could do any mission with only the two of us. And we’re not going to leave our guild after so much effort put on it. So yeah, we just said “ok, this sucks….”

I hope you guys do something to include guilds like mine. I bet there’s a lot of them. But to be honest, I won’t hold my hopes too high.

Btw, this post pretty much covers all the issues the current state of guild missions have https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/New-guild-missions-opinions-concerns/page/14#post1522077

I would go as far as rolling back the guild missions until they’re better designed.

In a year we shall have our gear!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

so you’re okay with 80 days to get 2 earrings?

remember that if you have more than 1 set of gear that is doubled. 2 sets or gear= 160 days. if you have an alt with 2 sets of gear that’s almost a year to get JUST the earrings assuming you play every single day.

that’s 320 days without missing a single day.

I agree that it is too much time to get upgrades. But also, people should have to consider that GW2 doesn’t have an end-game. You don’t really “need” ascended gear for anything. So, there’s actually no time limit to get it. It’s not like Anet will release a new raid tier the next month and you need this gear to beat the current tier before the new tier arrives.

This is a “no pressure” game. Nobody is more powerful than anyone because of gear. You don’t really need better gear to beat content. For Anet, you have all the time in the world to get the gear.

I don’t agree with that view, of course. I don’t want to spend a year grinding the same content over and over to basically get a tiny stat upgrade or a cosmectic “upgrade”. But it seems like Anet has this idea that we want to play The Sims or something like that.

OK so I made a simple test: First, I stripped naked my engineer and reset her traits to get as few variables as possible and set her to base damage at level 80. I tested the Flamethrower and used 1 exotic pistol without +power or +precision to execute the test. Tested against a training dummy in Lion’s Arch using only auto attacks.

Base FT Damage at lvl 80: 969
(You get this by equipping the FT and subtracting the Power value from the Attack value).

Base lvl 80 Exotic Pistol Damage: 1029
(Actual pistol damage is 876 – 1029, but the game adds the max damage to the calculation of the Attack value. Or at least, that’s what the hero panel shows)

TESTS:

FT and No weapons:
Attack: 1885 (Power+Weapon Damage)
Power: 916
Damage on Dummy: 560 – 610 auto attack damage

FT and Exotic lvl 80 pistol:
Attack: 1885 (Power+Weapon Damage)
Power: 916
Damage on Dummy: 560 – 610 auto attack damage

Same test as above, but with a Pistol with the following damage stats:

Weapon Damage 876 – 1029
64 Power
90 Precision
64 Condition Damage

Damage on Dummy: 630 – 690 (Only Because of the stats on the weapon)

Conclusion: Weapon damage is not being added when equipping the FT (and I assume, any other bundle). Base bundle damage is not even an average of the equipped weapon damage. Well, that is if we are understanding the patch notes correctly.

However, weapon stats are being correctly included into the bundle stats, as per patch notes.

From what I understand…

*Utility skill damage is/was based on player level (according to the wiki)
*The patch (supposedly) changes bundle weapon damage to be based on the highest rarity weapon damage available to your level. Apparently basing it on player level alone was not producing results consistent with actual weapons.

Honestly, I didn’t pay attention to the attack statistic prior to this patch and I too see the attack statistic going down when switching to a kit. Yet I also see that the weapon damage is roughly double what it was before the patch and prybar is really messing faces up good.

Yes, that’s how I understand it too. I’ll do a simple test when I get home. If I can reproduce what you say consistently, then maybe is just the UI or something that is not showing the correct values of power and attack.

Or maybe it is how it’s supposed to work and we got it all wrong O.o

Can confirm this (and many others, as you can see on the engineer forums). Haven’t tested actual damage, but at least on the stats panel, power and attack go down when I switch from my pistols to my flamethrower.

Seeing as this is a non-subscription game, PTR servers make sense. Let players do the testing for you Anet! Things like this wouldn’t be happening.

I doubt it.

For some reason you guys seem to believe the testers at ANet don’t notice the new bugs and bug fixes not actually fixing anything.

That’s not how it works though, even in games with a public test server.

Dev resources are the bottleneck and they have to prioritize, meaning tons of stuff will go live buggy even if the bugs have been found and reported. If there are indeed just two devs responsible for fixing all class related stuff no amount of testers will speed up or improve the process.

And that’s exactly the point of leaving the testing to the players. Anet can use those resources to improve areas of the process that are lacking (Q/A for example).

I don’t like to compare, but just look at how successful Blizzard is with their PTR.

The engineer class seems to have had it pretty rough. With the changes to kits and (part of) the turrets, is this update any significant boost in areas of concern or just a minor alteration? I have only a limited time to play, which is why I have been hesitant to jump onboard with a neglected class, but it is still piquing my interest.

Some of the “buffs” didn’t actually carry over to live (base damage of bundles equal to exotics of your level, for example). So I would say is not that great. I hope Anet fixes it and actually apply what the patch notes say.

Toypocalypse (Can't join as a party)

in Wintersday

ChackO.2346

This activity is horribly designed.

- Enemies take too long to kill and hit too hard. You are there mashing skills like crazy while they have lots of time to kill a dolyak.
- Recovery around the center takes too long.
- Players have to run around all the time gathering stuff.
- You can’t join with parties and coordinate a strategy beforehand.
- Walls are pointless as enemies can go right past them.
- You can’t force enemies into a path.
- You are not given time between waves, not even a timer telling you how much until next wave.

Now, what I am getting?
- Players running around like headless chickens.
- Player standing still doing nothing.
- Players kittening about what you are doing when it doesn’t follow some stupid bad strategy they had in their minds.
- People leaving as soon as one dolyak dies, because they want the achievement.
- Not a snowball’s chance in the Fissure of Woe of getting the last achievement.
- Frustration where there should be fun.

These guys should have checked games like Dungeon Defenders or Orc Must Die before doing this.
- First and most important of all, you should have been allowed to enter in a party.

Couldn’t agree more with this person.

Like Snowball Mayhem and the Bell Choir, the Toypocalypse is an activity. They are using the same systems, and these systems do not permit joining by party. Unfortunately due to technical limitations and time constraints before the holidays, we cannot change it. We understand that this is not ideal for people who wish to play in the same party and who are finding it difficult in random groups. We will be adjusting the “Toypocalypse Cancelled” achievement so that you will need to keep only one gift dolyak alive. We do not have an ETA on when this change will be live. Thank you for your feedback. We have been listening, and we will take your comments on board for future game updates.

I don’t have the slightest clue as of why did you guys thought using that system was a good idea to begin with. It would be nice if you could elaborate on that. Maybe we could start to understand what are the conceptions you have about groups, and community in general. Because I get the message of you guys wanting us to play together as teams, as guilds, but you’re not giving us the right tools to do it and ironically, those tools already exist in the game.

I want to chime in, and say that I am disappointed too with this. I tried Toypocalipse early this afternoon and loved it. But when I tried to enter with my girlfriend, we were separated (we were already in party). Actually, after some tries, we never ended up in the same group. So we just ended up doing something else (exploring lower lvl areas can net you more gifts than doing events). The event can be a blast, but there’s no point in doing it if I can’t enter with my friends. Besides, Toypocalipse is a tower defense game, and a hard one at that. Extremely difficult to win, and let alone win it with 5 dolyaks alive.

TL;DR: No point in running Toypocalipse without your friends.

I didnt play WoW, but I think Dungeon finder was something like this.

Trust me, you don’t want something like WoW’s dungeon finder. It was the single most important step in killing any sense of community in that game. Basically it ensured that any player could, at any time, get 4 “automatic friends” to carry him through a dungeon, often picked from other servers (where that player was unknown). This meant that trolls, griefers, scammers and ninjas could get 4 new victims delivered in minutes, at the press of a button.

[…]

If they add a WoW-style automated dungeon finder, that will be the final nail in GW2’s coffin, at least as far as I’m concerned.

You’re completely wrong. Actually the LFD tool is one of the best things Blizzard have introduced in WoW (and I miss it every time I log into GW2). Saying that the community was destroyed because of it is just spreading missinformation. Almost everyone that complained about it were the elitist wannabes that couldn’t monopolize a server anymore. It also made you group with people from different servers, giving the opportunity to meet new people (I personally love the fact that I can group with friends I have on other realms). Finding a group is extremelly easy and fast, just about 15 mins. Using the tool also rewards you with Valor points and gold and a chance of special loot if your role is on high demand (usually tanks). Runs are fast, and people actually get to know the figths faster simply because they can run the dungeons more times. The system also match you up with players that have similar gear, so if you have good gear you will be grouped with people that also have good gear (not necesarily good skills).

Of course, you will find the random garden troll, the griefer, and the wannabe leet player. But hey, they’re everywhere! Also, you can simply block them and you won’t be grouped with them anymore. Eventually these kind of players will have to behave because their queue times grow because of people blocking them. And this indirectly filters out these kind of players and makes for a better community. Oh, and you get a nice 30 min debuff where you can’t queue again if you ragequit. Groups can’t kick someone unless a vote-kick has passed. Yes, you could end up on a party of griefers and the vote-kick would be useless, but you also have the option of reporting them and leave, wait 30 mins and then 10-15 for another run. That’s about 45 mins, the average time it takes to find a group spamming LFG. This happend at the early stages of the LFD implementation, but today these are EXTREMELY rare cases.

Besides, I really doubt about a LFD tool being bad for this community. AFAIK GW2 dungeons can’t be rolfstomped even if you memorize them (like WoW dungeons, where you can AoE everything to death when you outgear the instance), so communication will always be a must to succesfully end the instance.

I’m almost 78 and I’ve never run a Dungeon, because honestly I don’t like the old LFG chat formula. I did it a lot of times when playing FFXI and then on the early WoW era without LFD tool. I really liked the LFG browser that Guil Wars have, and I was totally surprised when I didn’t find it here. A game of this magnitude needs a better, more convenient way of forming groups. I think people are not asking for an automated LFD tool like WoW has (it kills time, but also kills community). A simple LFG/LFM browser will do. If I’m a party leader and looking for more, I can publish my group, what we want to run and maybe a little comment. The tool should also list party members and their professions/levels. If I’m alone and looking for group, I could open the browser and easily find a party with this info. Also, I could put myself on the list and write down the dungeon I want to run (story/exploration) and a little comment. The tool shoul also publish my profession and level.

That’s all, nothing extreme. I’m really surprised this has not been done. And no, using an external site is not a solution. Not even a temporal one.

Edit: Actually, after years of playing WoW, I remember how it was to get a group before and how it is now, and thanks to the LFD tool I can get a lot more done in less time and don’t have to waste a complete evening to get 1 group and do 1 or 2 dungeons. The LFD tool is the reason why WoW is still so succesful, and part of why SWTOR failed. It didn’t have one. And no, it doesn’t kill community. Spamming LF1M over and over is not having a community.

I love GW2 and I love all it has to do. But yesterday I hit 80 and my girlfriend asked “ok, what do we do now? You know, besides exploring everything.” I said “let’s do a dungeon!”… Of course, it was late at night and we couldn’t get a group after 1 hour. And then maintenance happened.

We need a LFD/LFG tool!
