None of this is a good idea. I’m glad there’s so few people in here who think it is – and even those who like it have some pretty severe reservations.

I’m really going to miss doing Tequatl.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to have ALL waypoints UNCONTESTED by default, then if someone tries to port to a contested waypoint, it drops them at the nearest one that isn’t contested?

Oh dear.

As excited as I was about the megaservers meaning easier times doing bosses, now I’m disappointed. Teq (the one I do most often) will now not run on JQ at 7pm Eastern. So all the friends I made doing the event will probably not be able to do it all on the same map anymore, if it only runs a couple times a day. That’s extremely disappointing.

This all seems unnecessarily complicated.

My computer broke just before the update, and I haven’t been able to play at all.

How often do the assault Knight power cores drop, and are they account-bound? I may have my computer back by next Thursday (The day I go on vacation) so I won’t have much playtime.

I’m wondering if it’s a huge grind to get them, or if I could feasibly get the blue one to drop for me.

Not concerned. Because I play the living story and it essentially reads like a book. Everything is there. The conclusion is set up to be revealed in the next update.

Why do people already want to know the ending? The ending hasn’t happened yet.

The “motive” is likely the big reveal.

That seems like common sense to me.

Additionally, I have a feeling I’ve figured it out, because I’ve actually been playing the story instead of rushing through the content. If you wanted Scarlet’s motives and her methods, you should have been playing the story from the beginning.

The fact that it hasn’t been handed to you is not ANet’s fault.

AFKing in LA

ChaosKirin.1328

This entire thread is why ANet removed loot from other events.

And I HOPE they don’t do it again. There’s already so little that drops of good quality. But the problem isn’t the loot, or ANet, It’s the people who BLAME ANet.

I’m sure that a lot of people defending the AFKers in here have sat and done nothing themselves. Honestly, it’s not the people farming bags that are the problem – they’re performing a service, and that’s keeping the path clear for civilians to escape.

You all DO KNOW that civilians aren’t just rescued when you encourage them, right? You have to also get them to the gates. You know that, right?

So putting the blame on bag farmers is just ludicrous.

However, AFKers that are contributing nothing ARE the problem and should be kicked. If you’re kicked after 5 minutes because you were doing nothing… what do you care? Just go back in. It takes a full map to reach the quota of citizens. ANet has alreay downgraded the number BECAUSE of the people doing nothing in the event.

You don’t automatically assume that people are going to exploit your event. People are taking advantage of programming, and that is NOT ANet’s fault. This is essentially like blaming a mugging victim for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, rather than blaming the person who performed the mugging.

If you are taking advantage of this exploit, YOU are the problem. YOU, and no one else.

Zergs would still exist anyway. They would ‘farm’ the end-of-event rewards until they managed to get all their achievements, then they’d quit.

So the people who actually want to play to PLAY will not be able to do the event.

I play MMOs to be rewarded. Heck, I play ANY game to be rewarded. I love the story, of course, but it’s not fun for me if there’s not something to work toward. I have absolutely loathed the events where no loot drops.

I’m gonna state here again what I stated in my thread about the missing Laurel vendor.

There are people who play this game for the social aspect. There going to want to go to a place where they can do everything while talking to people. Now, instead of going to Lion’s Arch, they’re going to go to Rata Sum, OR Divinity’s Reach, OR Ebonhawke, OR The Grove, OR Hoelbrak, et cetera.

They are not going to buy an airship pass and congregate on the airship, as was ANet’s intention.

ANet knows that people gather in Lion’s Arch, and they felt they should try to capitalize on that. Which is fair to a point – the game needs to make money. But not at the risk of angering players.

The airship differs from the Royal Terrace in that they did not REMOVE crafting and laurels from Divinity’s Reach.

This is a test to see if people would pay to get to the other services from LA rather than go to other cities. This could be because the Royal Terrace experiment didn’t work, and they could be playing with the idea of taking these conveniences out of every city (For example, you can craft in Rata Sum, but to use the trading post, you have to go to the Grove. And if you want a bank, you have to go to Ebonhawke.) But for the low price of $10, you can permanently access everything in one convenient place!

The problem is, if people don’t protest, ANet won’t know that this idea of theirs is BAD. If people essentially roll over and take it, ANet will shrug and (rightfully) pursue this avenue of moneymaking it’s discovered. It’s our responsibility to let ANet know when they’ve done something unacceptable.

One of the devs said earlier in the thread that everything would be available in Vigil Keep. So even the Devs were told that everything would be available in vigil keep.

The fact that the laurels and crafting aren’t there is a very transparent attempt to get people to buy the airship pass.

Vigil Keep Laurel vendor

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: ChaosKirin.1328

ChaosKirin.1328

I really don’t want to repeat myself again, so I’ll paraphrase.

Do any of you know why people like to go to Lion’s Arch? A lot of people like the social aspect of the game.

ANet knows this.

People went to Lion’s Arch to talk to other people.

By removing crafting and laurels from Vigil Keep, ANet has essentially said "Hey, we don’t care that you guys like to go to a single place to talk. Spread out all over the game instead… Or buy our convenient pass and make a new hub there!

The same people often meet to talk in LA/Vigil Keep at the same time to chat.

These same people will now likely go to Divinity’s Reach OR Rata Sum OR Ebonhawke OR other starter cities instead of Vigil Keep.

ANet has purposely broken up that social aspect, which was important to people.

You are all missing the point.

“While I wasn’t really terribly concerned with the change at first, I’m starting to really realize the impact it has. Lion’s Arch is central to everything. Asura gates for one – plus, Vigil Keep is right in the middle of the event, so of course people are going to go there.”

I don’t play WvW, and it would be very selfish of me to take up space by going to my WvW just to craft/go to the laurel vendor/use the Mystic Toilet.

While I wasn’t really terribly concerned with the change at first, I’m starting to really realize the impact it has. Lion’s Arch is central to everything. Asura gates for one – plus, Vigil Keep is right in the middle of the event, so of course people are going to go there.

Taking crafting and the laurel vendor out of Vigil Keep is confusing. The only reason I can see for them to have done it is that hopefully people will sigh, roll their eyes, and buy a pass to the airship.

I mean, when they put the Royal Terrace in Divinity’s reach, they didn’t remove the crafting and Laurel vendor. Was it such a failure that they had to push it down the throats of people who frequent Lion’s Arch, too?

Why do people assume that just because there aren’t new races and new weapons and new everything released every two weeks, it’s never going to happen?

I feel like the only person who can see a bigger picture here. Your ‘expansion content’ is coming. We’re getting the story part right now. The story will lead to new stuff, like your races, and your new permanent zones, new weapons, new gear… This is not hard to figure out. And when this stuff inevitably does happen, are ANY of you going to be here apologizing for your shortsightedness?

Because let’s look at the map. WHY would certain zones be labeled as they are without intent to bring them into the game. We already know there are six dragons out there – of course they are going to become central to the story at some point.

GW2 is not like any other MMO out there. It’s not necessary to have a boxed expansion. The people who want story are getting it now. The people who want a new race (and I honestly can’t see why you’d want a new race without following the story) will get their new race. And people who want new zones to explore will get those, too. They just won’t come in a box for $49.99.

This is what the game is about. It just blows my mind that people are complaining about something that essentially amounts to “There are updates every two weeks! Woe is me, I’m not getting what I want!” Do you know how unprecedented this is for ANY MMO? Ever? Instead of getting all your content in one big dump, you’re getting it spread out over many months. The game doesn’t get stale. Frankly, it’s amazing.

I don’t know. I could just be hopelessly optimistic here, but I have never seen an MMO do so much to keep new content rolling in. Who knows what the end of this story update will bring? Maybe we’ll get new zones. A new race. New weapons or armor. Something unexpected? Could be.

Remember, WoW was released in 2004, and the first expansion wasn’t until 2007.

And since the NDA is up… ESO was horrible. I have never seen a worse game. I’d rather play Flappy Bird for the rest of my life than subject myself to that failure of a game ever again.

I get this feeling that if Scarlet were male, no one would have a problem with her at all.

I mean, she’s the equivalent to many other male characters that have stormed across canons in the past. The Joker is mentioned in that massively article. She is like the Reavers in Firefly – at first, no reason is given for their existence, but people are terrified of them nevertheless. She’s Crais from Farscape. John Locke from LOST. Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. Magneto from the X-Men.

There is no difference between her and any other villain that has ever existed, except that she’s female.

Being a powerful woman does not automatically make you a bad character/Mary Sue/retcon bait. In fact, I applaud ANet for making the main villain female, rather than yet another male villain.

And I bet if a good portion of the people mentally rewrote her character as male, they would have no problem with her.

I think your personal biases are clouding your views here.

I had a response here, but it was fairly inflammatory, so I’m removing it.

Where I see a character with potential and meaning – after all, the idea is that this character has come out of nowhere because she’s essentially a dragon’s puppet – everyone else sees a Sue. I don’t understand.

Scarlet is the foreshadowing you’re all looking for. Scarlet is the beginning of the story. She is not the big Bad Guy. She is the precursor for what many people believe is a dragon.

And that’s why you haven’t heard of her before in lore. She is essentially nothing but a blip in the big picture. And that is why she is well-written. She’ll die in obscurity, having heralded the coming of an Elder Dragon. I don’t care who. Primordus. Mordremoth. Whichever.

Not every first chapter has to start with a whisper. And if you look at the story and everything pertaining to it, you will see that this was all clearly planned from the start.

The RNG factor is honestly killing me.

It would be nice to kill Tequatl and be guaranteed something nice for my efforts. I’ve killed her almost every night for the past two months, and have a couple Runes of the Sunless to show for it. No mini (which I REALLY want) and no ascended weapons, while the same people are getting Hoards of Tequatl several times.

Recently, wanting one of the black lion weapon skins, I opened all my chests. I had about a hundred, so you can imagine how much money I spent… I got nine scraps.

That’s just a horrible way to treat customers. So I don’t buy keys anymore.

ChaosKirin.1328

Okay, that sounds like a decent character. So what about Scarlet is radically different so that she’s a bad character?

She’s a sylvari who wants more knowledge. She goes to the knowledge capital of EVERYTHING (AKA Rata Sum) and makes her way through all three colleges, likely graduating from each because of her ability to absorb knowledge. When there is no more stuff for her to learn, she turns to the Eternal Alchemy, and because she looked into the Eternal Alchemy, she essentially goes mad, or falls under the control of a more powerful being.

This powerful being pushes her to amass an army. It seems as if this army is specifically designed to (I assume) get her to a ley line under Lion’s Arch for reasons that are yet to be explained.

Likely, everything she’s done has been to follow ley lines. I’m guessing it’s because she’s been following them to a place of extreme power. Her initial attack on LA failed because her army just wasn’t strong enough — so now she’s coming back to finish the job.

The two characters are similar in that regard. She’s bribed and threatened other masses of bad guys to help her instead of utilizing demons, but the similarities are there.

And while she may not have been born into money or power, she had a thirst for knowledge, which prompted her to seek out the Asura, which makes a lot of sense to me.

Before she looked into the Eternal Alchemy, she wasn’t necessarily evil. She wasn’t quite GOOD, either, but not murderous at that point. If you read her journal, she details the fact that she is plagued now by voices in her head, pushing her to do things. She’s following the voices in order to confront the being responsible (or so she thinks) when she’s really just doing exactly what the voices want her to do. This seems like a pretty deep character flaw to me.

And eventually, she’s probably going to lose her life because of her ambition.

So where’s the difference?

Tengu's do something?

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: ChaosKirin.1328

ChaosKirin.1328

Everyone’s so hung up on the need for expansions.

The content is released in the living story.

There’s a huge content update coming out in March.

Why does this need the label of ‘expansion’ to be relevant?

The Tengu may or may not appear. The only ones who can say for certain are ANet devs, and not, say, some random person in the forum. They should certainly be addressed, since there’s no doubt that this will affect them in some way. If only to say that they flee, or hole themselves up behind their wall and Scarlet leaves them alone for whatever reason (cuz she’s not looking to destroy Lion’s Arch and everything around it, I don’t think. She’s looking for something in particular. The Tengu might not be part of her plans).

Whether or not they will be a playable race sooner or later remains to be seen. Looking at the Tengu NPCs, they are a high-texture, high-detailed group, but all their faces are the same. Generally, before a new races is released on a game, you’ll see the devs release improved texturing for the NPCs. Just because this hasn’t happened doesn’t rule out that it WON’T – ’cuz new face textures could come with the release – but it makes it a little more unlikely.

There’s a lot that goes on with releasing a new race. It’s one of the higher-desired aspects, so it will likely have some sort of cost, much like the Cathar on SWTOR had. I think if you paid $10, you unlocked the race to create. Now, I’m not using SWTOR as a paragon model of an MMO (because it almost completely cloned itself from WoW) but it IS POSSIBLE to release a race without a box shelf expansion.

But in all seriousness, the only thing we haven’t gotten in GW2’s first year is a new race. We already have an expansion’s worth of story. The rest of the goodies will come out in March. And I imagine the new race won’t be too far behind.

First, the game was advertised as changeable. I bought the game for the reason that the maps would change and I’d constantly have new things to explore. So yes, it was advertised as such. I remember one developer add stating something like “Centaurs might destroy a whole village one day, and then no one would be able to go back to it as it once was.”

Second, Scarlet is the very definition of a good villain. Somehow, this prevailing attitude that she isn’t has taken over because of the fact that the entire story didn’t take place in one update. If you look through the whole arc, she didn’t suddenly appear for no reason. it started relatively slowly, with her mustering troops. And while it seemed she pulled the Aetherblades for no reason at all (besides attacking Lion’s Arch) her reasons are now perfectly clear.

She started with a small force. She took her pirates, attacked LA, and found the defenses too strong to immediately do what she wanted.

So what did she do? Rethought things. Recruited the molten alliance. The Krait. Developed a new plan. Essentially went back to the drawing board, started over, and came up with something fool-proof.

Every Living Story update has been a step of that plan. In fact, if the whole story happened in one update, THAT would make Scarlet a bad villain. We have seen her development. We have seen her amassing her troops. This whole thing is a year in the making – all the pieces fit, and it all makes sense.

At times, the story wasn’t executed perfectly, but that doesn’t make it BAD.

It seems to me that people are used to the instant gratification that you might get from an expansion pack on other MMOs, where you can play the whole story through in a few hours, then go on to talk about the lack of endgame (since you would have already finished the endgame, but I digress.) You’ve been given an ever-changing world with new content every two weeks, and that is nothing short of amazing.

ANet has said in relation to PvEers not wanting map completion tied to PvP that they want everyone to explore all aspects of the game.

So I get the feeling that PvEers are going to be forced to PvP, and PvPers are going to be forced to have to deal with them. Neither side really wins. Well. The exception being that PvPers get a ton of easy kills. So I guess there’s THAT.

I’m being cautious, but my overall feeling is negative. I hope it’s not just a straight WvW map, or that PvEers can elect not to put themselves into PvP mode, at least for the duration of the LS update. I don’t PvP. I respect people who do… But it’s not for me.

However, if this is a strictly PvP update, I’m definitely happy for those who have been waiting for this for a long time!
