Heey guys, Id like to know which one fills what role in the game. So far i like the playstyle of both but id like to know which one specializes in what situation in the End Game

So what should i choose and why? Cuz i have no idea
I know you could say things like ``balance`` and ``playstyle`` but im curious to your opinion and the argument for your choice

Firstly to answer your question, no, Engineer is not all about spamming bombs and grenades. If you look at optimal rotations for Engineer in PvE for example you will see that grenades are just one part of their dps rotation.

In terms of PvE – both can be an asset to a team in dungeons/fractals if played efficiently. Ranger offers frost spirit & spotter for party wide buff and Engineer offers heavy condition pressure (when using sinister specifically), vuln, might stacking, reflect on elixir, stealth… Engi is basically the jack of all trades and can fill in for missing utility based upon the party comp if needed.

Both have their niché uses however unfortunately they are often frowned upon by casual dungeon guilds and pugs who fear to fray outside of the x1 war, x1 guard, 2 ele and thief comp as often enough they don’t know what a ranger/engi can bring to the team if played well.

If I had to pick between the two I would prefer an Engineer on the team than a Ranger… but it all comes down to the player for me personally.

In PvP Engi is pretty solid playing either soldier rifle or some kind of gimmick condi spec. Ranger isn’t in the best position right now but Power survival hits pretty hard and taunt is very strong however you’re pretty easily countered and often focused.

WvW I cannot say but I would imagine Engineer would be a better choice based upon my knowledge of both classes in PvP.

Ultimately I would suggest going with Engineer, currently it is pretty solid in the 2/3 game modes (can’t say about wvw). However, that is not to say that you should remove ranger from the equation entirely. I would suggest playing both and seeing which you prefer after you’ve tried them both for a good amount of time.

A good starting point.

Engineer

For PvE you have two main build. Power and Sinister Grenadier. Sinister have higher dps, but can’t hurt structure and isn’t as good while using Elementalist Icebow.

For WvW roaming, take a look at sPvP build and adapt them. Soldier Rifle is pretty solid. For WvW Zerging on the other end, Engineer is average.

Ranger

For PvE there is three main build. The Sinister A/T have the highest DPS, while Bezerker S/A + Longbow is not far behind. There is also the S/A + GS Quick Draw build that have a little bit lower dps, but work fine. Longbow on Ranger is not good for PvE. In Open World it do the job, but for dungeon, you should only use it at the start of the fight and never switch back to it for the whole fight after that.

Power Survival build do that job in sPvP. The taunt on it is powerful. But for WvW zerg, the ranger is like the engineer average.

So what would you recommend? If not having to spam grenades and bombs, but also be ablefocus on the weapons (p/p is pretty viable for engi as ive heard).

I main a ranger and play a thief as well.

• For dungeons, thieves are more wanted by not by much.
  Dungeon meta is about warriors, guardians, eles, and maybe a single mesmer for time warp. When you are forced to take people outside of the ideal, thieves are a good choice for their very high damage and clutch stealth revives. Rangers used to be pretty good with one specific spec, but with frost spirit broken the value of a ranger to a dungeon group is very low.

• For Zerg WvW, neither are wanted. if you hop in and do it anyway, a thief with shortbow will get more tags, thanks to the bouncing nature of the auto attack and the spamable aoe of clusterbomb. he will also have better survivability because of shadow step and the shortbow teleport. and thats what zerging is about, tagging stuff and getting bags, not contributing in any meaningful way. If the zerg had a choice between ranger and thief, they would probably ask for your ranger for the water field. Piercing arrows is pretty hilarious in a zerg too, so rangers arent horrible, they just arent ever going to be the best.

• For roaming, both are strong. Thief is probably stronger because he can leave any fight he doesnt want to be in. Rangers are still very strong in 1v1, and can handle warriors, engineers, elementalists and necros much better than a thief. Likewise, the thief can handle mesmers and guardians much better than the ranger. personally i think the thief can do more “cool stuff”, but the ranger playstyle calls to my heartstrings.

• Living World / Events, Living world is a tie, its so easy it doesnt matter. Events, Ranger is probably the best in the game at soloing difficult content like an open world champion, and major events like Teq or Maw or whatever, ranger can dps from much further away which is preferable.

Which one should pick? The one you enjoy playing more. I know my thief is better at the things I like to do, but I play the ranger more often because… because I love the rage that people express when they get beat by rangers. thieves kill people and its cheap, people run away from thieves. rangers have this stereotype of being terrible, no one runs away, and when they die to a ranger they feel ugly and inadequate.

killing people with a ranger is like psychological griefing.

Thank you for your answer! it helps me alot its good to see someone not saying the Ranger sucks at everything you want to do with it. So since (in your opinion) both can be good killers in WvW and both arent the best Dungeon Proffesions to choose from.. imma go with the one that has the best survivabillity in WvW.. imagine you encounter, 2 medium skilled players X, in a fight.. Running away from the fight is NO option. which one??

Warrior is still the best all-around class imo, but each patch they’re nerfed which can be annoying as a player.

Specifically to Ranger:

Dungeons: The greatsword changes helped boost the damage of the weapon up above 1h sword and the class overall does more damage. On the downside, the only real value to the group was nerfed (bug?). So as a selfish DPSr, the Ranger is pretty good now. For utility and maximizing a group? Pretty useless.

WvW: RF has made power builds deal considerable burst damage, but given ANet’s track record, it will likely be nerfed. Like Dungeons, the class has no group value whatsoever. On top of this, the defensive options for the class are far too focused on dueling so the class is trained down easily and is useless in GvG’s still. Roaming as condi is likely going to remain the meta for Rangers once the longbow changes settle down some, but power will be more valuable roaming as well.

PvP: Power is good for soloQ but the lack of group utility is still going to hold the class back. Condi Rangers will likely make a comeback but things are too new to tell.

Now with that all said, I would suggest you just make one of each and play a bar in PvP with each of them. After 10-20 games you’ll get a feel for the class’s playstyle and if you enjoy playing it or not. If you enjoy playing the class, you’ll likely enjoy the class regardless of its relative power.

Those 10% on the 3rd rotation brings it close, but since sword has cripple on AA, IE – 100% uptime of Predators Onslaught, sword has 15% more DPS then before (counting in the fact that its cripple also boosts pet)….

So no, GS is not above sword DPS by any margin what so ever.

But do you think Ranger is a good option for the things i want to do?? Or should i rather pick Thief or Warrior for those things?

Ive been wondering.. Is it possible to play the ele effective with using just 1 (maybe 2) elements??

I.E making a build that gets you crit/dps (lightning&Fire) or for example just full dmg ??
Is such a thing possible? And STILL be effective in PvE&PvP(+WvW).

Well i havent played for like 5 months now and going to return. Im considering playing the ranger but.. First id like to know how it is to be a ranger right now soooo.. How is it to play a ranger in PvP, WvW, sPvE, and Dungeons ??(and maybe some more things).

I thought Asura was great for being a small assassin, but telegraphed attacks are really annoying if you’re so small. I recommend doing for Human or Sylvari just for the size alone.

Should i do Human or Sylavri then? Which one suits better with the Medium armors?

Yea.. I guess you guys are right about the fact everyone uses magic. Thanks guys!
Though i have still one question.. Why should we chooce weapons over using magic?

But if i use a profession like a Thief? I wont be able to use any kind of magic right? or are there some racial skills that make that possible?

Why do people want to use magic? Well who doesn`t want to shoot freaking lightning or firebolts out of their hands aye? But here it comes!

I just made a new character and i was wodnering if anyone has a guide that describes how to level fast. I know alot of people told me stuff like “Dont hast just enjoy what the game has to offer” and i did that for the last couple 2 years now and still havent got a 80 since ive had a half year break and made alot of new characters without even reaching 40.
So can anyone help me with this fast leveling proces? Keep in mind i just got like 9g or some.

As far as your original question … doesn’t sound asura to me, my honest opinion would be to try and shorten one of the names. Otherwise just go with whatever has more meaning to you!

Necro is sub par for PvE (pretty nonexistant support/ average DPS). It’ll be fine, but you might meet elitist pvers who dont want to take a necro due to those reasons.

For small group/solo roaming its quite strong, and pretty fun to play imo. Although the lack of disengage/low mobility can be pretty annoying. With a small guild group or a couple of friends, necro has a good selection of builds you could use to roam efficiently. Necros are also good at flipping camps solo.

For tagging stuff in events and living world necro is great.

I got 1 question left.. Is the Necro`s mobility really that bad??

The positives are that despite necro being the bottom class in pve it is still perfectly viable and can pull its weight in casual runs.

Plus its a monstrously good class in WvW. And pretty fun.

Since the real problem of balancing the classes is PvP and WvW and he doesnt got a problem with those game modes.. I think ill roll the Necro cuz they can always fix their probs in PvE right! But i still like to get more information ^^

First id like to start in PvE till my 80. Then id like to be a Roamer (solo or small group) and do some dungeons for gear and the fun.

WvW will become a thing id like to do 50/60% of my time and the rest PvE; Dungeons, random events, living world etc.

Will the Necro do well for this? Cuz i like him pretty much and maybe its a good choice for ^these^ things…

Granted there is some QQ in there I feel it’s still an accurate representation on how the Necromancer performs and how he is perceived ingame.

That post only shows the negative parts of the Necro but there has to be good parts too… And every negative and positive point is purely based on personal perseptions so id like to see some more stuff

I got a question which id like to be answered. I was thinking about playing an ele, but i didnt like the switching of elements all the time sooo…

Is it possible to specialize in 1 (and maybe 2) elements??
Cuz in both PvE and WvW i can play an engi with just my weapon set and a kit, so just 2 sets.. Is it possible for an ele to play just 1 and still be effective in PvE and WvW??

If i go Necro does that mean i HAVE to use the pets??? Cuz id like to make a necro but i dont want to run with all those things around me

Are the proffs pretty good balanced? Cuz otherwise i dont know what to play. Is every proff equal to another in some way? So it doesnt matter which class i choose i wont be a** kicked by a random OP proffesion?

Alright, so I’m fairly new to Guild Wars 2 (less than a month) and I’m already lvl 80 on my Sylvarian Ele on the Crystal Desert server… And I’m a female gammer. I have no problem playing with males.. but of all the people that I have met, I haven’t met another female. I know this shouldn’t be an issue, but it would just be really nice to meet some other females that are into MMO games. Would love to hear some feedback and wondering if there are other girls out there that play.

Engi is for me the bext class on gw2 they have everything, good hp/armor/damage/lot of condi/ lot of regen hp/good skill to tank or burst/little invi with combo/some stun
even a glassy ing can tank more than a thief
A good ing can do almost the build he wants and be good

Heey guys ive been wondering… I watch alot of Twitch and everytime a guy goes solo roaming… He picks his warrior!

Is there anything else that goes great with solo roaming except Warrior?… And has good survivability?
