Are you going to buy HoT?

I’m interested in the expansion, but I’m going to wait for more details before I decide whether or not I’m going to buy it. And as Juan said, if it’s priced around $20-30, then that’ll help. If the new content can either fix or outweigh the issues I have with the game, then I’ll be on board.

The main issue I have with the game is that it doesn’t feel crisp. Meaning, my norn feels like he moves sluggishly, the sound effects don’t always sync up with the visual effects, it’s often unclear where the edges of platforms and creature hit boxes are, and the camera moves as though there’s some kind of mouse acceleration going on.

Then there’s the uneven quality of the voice acting and in-game cut scenes. For Point of No Return, the quality was really good, but there’ve been prior Living World episodes that were downright bad.

All the new content that they announced today is interesting, and I’m looking forward to hearing more, but right now I don’t have much of a reason to log in, and when I do, I don’t get sucked in because of the issues the game has.

The dialogue and voice acting are frustrating

in Living World

The dialogue between the supporting characters makes me cringe. When no one says anything to Taimi, yet she blurts out, “Don’t beg me to go, I’m staying here.” I want to snap at her that no one was talking to her.

Or when rushing off to the defense of Fort Salma, Kasmeer quips, “I would love to get to know your sister better, Marjory.”

Wait, what? People are dying, the world is under attack by an Elder Dragon, and you’re casually chatting about how nice it would be to get closer to your girlfriend’s sister? Priorities, people!

Not only that, but the way the dialogue is being delivered seems out of context, almost as though the characters are having two different conversations. Emphasizing different words in a sentence can completely change the sentence’s meaning or change how the character and their motivations are perceived. When this happens, it seems as though the voice actors weren’t given the context in which their lines were to be used. Either that, or they were given context, but after the dialogue was recorded the context was changed. Either way, it’s frustrating to listen to because it doesn’t feel natural. It just pulls me right out of the scene.

One last thing: at what point did we finally make the discovery that Mordremoth was behind all the spiked roots popping up all over? I’m playing through Entanglement right now, and it just seems like we went from following Scarlet’s research trail to all of a sudden talking about how this is the work of Mordremoth. Did I completely miss the big dramatic reveal somewhere?

Lethal damage from bosses hard to predict

in Living World

Posted by: DougM.2305

DougM.2305

TLDR up front: Can’t see when the boss is about to take a big swing because there’s too many spell effects on it. A lot of short-range AOE and melee damage taken in boss fights feels unpredictable. Playing as melee in Scarlett boss fights is frustrating.

Long version:

Damage in a lot of the larger fights, like Scarlett’s Hologram and the generals, is really difficult for me to predict. Frequently, I’ll be in melee range of a boss and suddenly I’ll take roughly a third to half of my life in damage from seemingly out of nowhere. Obviously, I’m dodging out of red circles and watching for wind-up animations, but the animations are especially hard to see due to the boss being covered in dozens of flashy spell and impact effects. Additionally, even when I can see that I’m behind the boss, there will still be short-range AOE spike damage that feels really random which I didn’t see coming.

Also, depending on how many other players are participating, I also have to set my graphics to Best Performance, in which case sometimes the boss’s model has such little detail that I can’t tell what it’s doing at all.

This isn’t unique to this Living Story event, either. This has been an issue for me throughout the game, and I’ve just had to learn the timing of bosses’ incoming damage. But it’s gotten to the point where playing as melee is frustrating because I spend more time dodging out, running away, trying to heal up, then running back in than I do actually hitting things. I love playing both my warrior and my elementalist, but during boss fights my elementalist is much less frustrating to play thanks to being able to stay at range.

Any suggestions on how I can better see when a big attack is coming? Is there a way to turn off or reduce other players’ spell effects? If there isn’t currently a way to do this, Anet, could you put that into the game, please? It’d be much appreciated.

The Future of the Personal Story

Shriketalon is right on the money with her/his suggestions and ideas. I just reached the final step of the personal story, and having to find a group to finish it has really turned me off, so instead of doing the last piece, I just watched it on YouTube. I’m very disappointed with how anticlimactic it is. Shriketalon’s depiction has me sitting back in my chair daydreaming that the fall back to Tyria was what actually happened.

The personal story had me going for a while, but the closer it got to the end, the more tedious and boring it became. I don’t care about Trehearne as a character and there just isn’t much of a sense of building tension towards the finale. It doesn’t feel like the fate of Tyria hinges on what I’m doing.

A better way to put it: I don’t feel like a hero.

Age of GW2 Players

Am I too old for gaming?

in Personal Story

This question naturally arises – seeing how I find the story in GW2 beyond naive and predictable. It’s one huge cliche. At the same time, I see people intrigued by it.

So I wonder – am I too old for video game stories? Maybe they are tailored for the younger folks. I feel like I’ve heard it all before.

Is it time for me to start reading Dostoyevsky and Isaac Asimov in order to find “a challenge” for my intellect/level of maturity?

You can always do both. Read Asimov and then play GW2. I finished up Foundation & Empire a couple of weeks ago when I didn’t feel like doing my personal story.

So much negativity lately. Is GW2 doomed?

The problem is that old gaming habits die hard. GW2 breaks from some MMORPG traditions, and it’s rubbing some people the wrong way. A lot of those people thought the game would be more like WoW than it turned out to be.

For example, if you get bored with the game, put it down for a while until new content comes out. There’s no subscription fee, so no harm done by not playing it. Believing that I have to put in hundreds of hours into the game in order to get my money’s worth is one mindset that some people need to get past.

Camera Max Distance

in Suggestions

Posted by: DougM.2305

DougM.2305

I think part of the reason they have the camera zoomed out as far as it is is because when you go to fight the big monster at the end of a world event chain, the camera zooms out about another 50% or so. Getting that extra bit of camera distance seems to help distinguish those boss fights as being especially epic compared to everything leading up to it.

Having the camera zoomed out that far all the time, with no difference between regular play and a world boss fight, takes away one tool A.net has to make world boss fights stand out.

Playing as a Norn, I feel ya. It feels like my camera can’t zoom out far enough unless I’m in a world boss fight. But the reason above may be one of the reasons A.net has the camera set the way it is. If A.net doesn’t want to change the camera distance, another thing they could do would be to include a field of view slider, going from the default 65 up to about 100. More viewable space, same camera distance.

This would be a great option, and it shouldn’t be too difficult to put into the game itself. Just from watching the video, it seems like it would make combat much more natural and fluid. I really hope Arena.net includes this.

Just to see what would happen, it would be pretty cool if everyone didn’t do any DEs for a full day and simply let the world burn for an afternoon. I’d like to see how bad things would get. Then maybe we’d be able to see just how much difference we make.

As it is, players are simply too good at successfully completing DEs. I’ve only seen a handful of DEs fail, and those have been in the 1-10 and 10-20 zones. Bandits poisoning the water supply in Queensdale comes to mind.

So, yes. It would be cool if we could see just how bad things could get.

Players are surprisingly helpful

Unfortunately i havent had much interaction with other players, yeah i see them doing DE’s but so far its been a prett much single player experience for me.

Disappointing.

Ah, that is disappointing. It occurred to me last night that this experience of players bumping into each other and helping each other out is what I wanted from an MMO without realizing it. I’ve played WoW since 2004, and I found myself wishing I could simply play it as a single player game. In GW2, I’m glad that there are other people around. It makes the game more fun in surprising ways.

One of the things I think is interesting is that interaction has been taking the shape of actions rather than conversation. Meaning, I’ve found myself running alongside someone and we just stick together and kill things on our way to a skill point or something, and there’s hardly a word said. Then, when we’re done, we just go our separate ways without saying a thing. No awkward conversation needed.

Case in point: yesterday I was fighting my way through a cave towards a skill point when I paused in front of a champion troll. A necromancer caught up to me, and without saying anything, we just jumped in like there was an unspoken, “Okay. Let’s do this!” We fought that thing for about six or seven minutes, and we worked really well together. When it was over, all we said was “Nice job” and “You too” and that was it. And it was perfectly fine. Off we went. I don’t remember the player’s name, and this is just one example of quite a few similar experiences I’ve had in GW2 so far. I’m very pleasantly surprised.

Map chat, on the other hand… lol

My personal opinion: it feels like a chore

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The game seems to require you to heavily explore and participate in each and every zone just to level. Without doing any dungeons, pvp, or your personal story you are often times left redoing the same content or going to a new zone. That isn’t fun honestly, but rather it promotes a heavy grind.

snip

I am not sure if it was intended that you would also be exploring with crafting and doing your personal story-line in addition to this. I do get that you can get experience from a wide variety of things, but is the zone content just filler that isn’t intended to be a main source of experience? As it stands right now though I feel forced to literally do a full zone completion just to feel close to the level I am supposed to be at. I frankly have to do other things just to level and cannot only do a single pass in that zone at my level and ding ready for the next zone.

This to me is a big issue.

I haven’t had any issues leveling; if anything, I sometimes feel as though the levels are coming too quickly and my gear can’t keep up. I’m completing each area, gathering, crafting, participating in as many DEs I come across as I can, and doing my personal story. I have not been doing much pvp or many dungeons. Personally, I’m not consciously trying to level as I’m doing these things, I’m simply out exploring because I enjoy exploring, and I’m doing my personal story because I like it so far.

I hear what you’re saying, though. If your play style doesn’t include things like completing maps and your personal story, what sort of things have you been doing to level up? It seems to me that map completion, personal story, and participating in lots of DE are some of the primary ways in which Arenanet had planned for people to gain XP.

Players are surprisingly helpful

I don’t know about the rest of you, but so far I’ve found that most players on my server are by and large pretty helpful. Much more so than in other MMOs I’ve played. And by helpful, I mean being out and about in the world and people coming by to help me in a fight or to revive me or work out how to reach a vista, things like that. There just seems to be a lot of willingness to lend a hand. I like it.

I took psychology as my minor during my undergrad, and so this is kind of a neat study in behavior. Given the incentives Arenanet has provided for people to cooperate, it seems like there’s a mild carry-over for generalized generosity, even when there’s nothing like XP to be gained. Arenanet has put players in the habit of simply helping out, in other words. It’s pretty cool.

Have you all been experiencing something similar? Or have I just been strangely lucky in the people I’ve run across?

Tanky - Warrior VS Guardian

Ordika summed it up nicely. Regarding the gap closer, that’s the trade off you’ll need to think about. You’ll have more gap closers available if you use a main hand sword and Bull’s Charge, or Throw Bolas, but you’ll lose the mitigation from the signets and you won’t get to use a mace. You could use Mace/Shield in one weapon set and Sword/Shield in the other, but that’s sacrificing having a ranged weapon.

It’s all a series of trade-offs. Just keep experimenting until you find something that works for you, and you can always change things up to suit your mood that day.

The title screen we had during the BWEs was really nice, I agree. It would be pretty cool to have it back.

Granted, I’m sure the good people at A.net have their hands full with things like game stability and such. This is probably the smoothest MMO launch I’ve ever seen. They’ve handled it really well. Hopefully they’ll bring back the title screen if there’s enough demand for it and when they can spare the manpower.

Regina, if rewards and drops are supposed to be scaled to the player’s actual level, the team may want to look into it to see if there’s a bug. It may be causing the items to be the character’s scaled level in a zone, rather than their true level.

Otherwise, if this is intended, it’s no big deal. It would be nice to have another incentive to explore low level zones, though.
