If you set a man on fire he will be warm for the rest of his life.”
Greetings, All!
I stopped playing GW 2 quite a while ago, and after seeing they removed repair bills and some other nice changes, I decided to give it another shot while I wait for WildStar Online to release.
I have a few questions though that I hope some members can shed some light on.
1) Are there any recommendations for a good WvW server? I don’t need the most dominate top scoring one, just one with people playing (I left when my server pop turned into a ghost town in Wvw). My work schedule is shifted early, so I play around 3pm-7pm EST, before usual Peak Time, so a heavily populated server (in terms of WvW) is probably the best idea to increase the number of players at those off-times.
2) I will be making a Guardian for WvW, so any tips or builds would be helpful. I’ve been watching “Tap Dat Mouse” on YouTube, seems like he’s got some interesting builds.
3) How does Armor Power work now? When I hit level 80 (or whatever the max level is), what will be my first mission in terms of getting geared? Originally the Devs were like “Acquire Looks, Not Power!” as end-game, but then I remember them saying in later e-mails about updates, “hahaha naaaah, Acquire Power too!”
I am completely out of the loop in terms of gear, so any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated!
4) Finally, any tips on quick means of leveling are appreciated as well. Would be awesome if I could level “doing” WvW, but I remember at release it wasn’t too feasible.
Thanks so much!

Greetings!
I took a couple month hiatus from GW 2, especially when PS 2 came out. When I came back, I realized my server for WvW seemed even more empty than it already was, and my guild had disbanded.
So, I wanted to see where I should head off too. I’m looking for a new WvW guild, and possibly a server to switch to (I’m currently on Borlis Pass). I don’t need to be on a “winning” server, I just want some people to play with. It would be great if the population had that happy medium where the queue times aren’t outrageous while also not being empty.
Oh and I play a Tanky Designated-Decoy warrior for any WvW guilds looking for new members. Trust me, it’s more effective than it sounds with proper team work =).
My time zone is EST, but I tend to play earlier in the evening than later.
Feel free to respond here or PM me.
Cheers!!

Wow, I finally am so close to finishing off my armor set that I was about to buy some gems and get some fluff items. Now I am reading there might be a gear treadmill?
I’m not going to start ranting until more information is released, but I will say I’m holding onto my cash in the meantime just in case. If I felt like it would be in my best interest to farm another set of gear to stay on an even playing-field in WvW, then that would be the Death Knell for me….too many other great games coming out at the end of this month to put up with that kind of nonsense.

Ivanov, I had no idea what to farm tbh. But last night I went to Cursed Shore looking for those camps you mentioned, and it worked out great! I basically just bought a green set of gear that has magic find and damage, and my income has dramatically increased.
Thanks so much for taking the time to explain all of that!

Greetings!
Currently I am using a defensive build on my warrior (defense/tactics with 10 pts in Arms with a bleed duration bonus). This is great for my goals in WvW which is the focus of my playstyle.
However, I am looking to make some gold and thus wanted to do a bit of PvE farming, but my damage is rather lackluster. What type of weapon should I obtain to aid with my DPS (I’m thinking maybe dual axes or a greatsword). Keep in mind I don’t plan on changing my Traits (ANet please put in Dual-Spec!!), so I won’t have any traits to help augment or boost a particular weapon’s power.
Thanks for your input!
If you set a man on fire he will be warm for the rest of his life.”
I wanted to emphasize how glad I am this game doesn’t have a monthly fee.
See, right now I am finding WvW rather lackluster. Mainly because I play in the early afternoon before people really start logging on, and so we have no commanders and no direction. There are simple things that would improve WvW, which I’m sure ANet is planning on adding after they revamp their system to make $$$ off of sPvP with the paid tournaments. Until then, I can just take a break and play something else, and frequently check back whenever it’s convenient without shelling out $15 for nothing.
A few additions I’d like to see:
1) Ability to see friendly players across WHOLE map (even better if across all 4 maps). One of the difficulties now is if you don’t have a commander to act as a Zerg beacon, it’s hard to tell where your friends actually are.
2) More commanders. This is just a time based thing at the moment, but I kind of wish the commander price was cheaper (maybe 50g or 25g). On larger servers I bet this isn’t a problem, but right now playing on off-peak hours means no commanders. I’m sure ANet intended commanders to be those willing to pay the $$$ to convert gems to gold to buy commander books, but not quite enough people are doing so.
3) A Broadcast command that covers all WvW zones at once. If all your queues are maxed, this isn’t such a big deal. However, if you need to concentrate forces to a certain map, a broadcast command would be great. Let’s say you and another underdog server are teaming up against the “winner”. Anyone just jumping into WvW would have no idea which map you are doing that on unless you have someone sacrificing their time by jumping around the different maps informing new players of such.
Luckily, while I wait for these things, I can go off and play other games without feeling bad since I’m not being charged extra. It’s also great knowing that even though the community is slowly dwindling right now, at any moment a patch could bring a large portion of the players back since none of them have to debate emptying their pockets to try out new content. Pure genius!
Thanks again, ANet!
If you set a man on fire he will be warm for the rest of his life.”
that was against NSP.
Problem is this week I had to call off attempting the operation due to our scores being so close, as we were focused on taking second place on thursday.
Anet needs to fix the scoring system so going after the winning server nets you more points than fighting over second and third. The way scores are setup, it makes no sense to attack a server that has already ‘won’ in score, but to attack the other server so they cant beat you.
Really the ball is in anets court, right now there is no real advantage to teaming up.
Joint operations with DR will only happen if its both advantagous to our positions or in a situation where the day is a lame duck day, where no server is going to pass another before reset so we want to make some fun, or prove a point.

If you set a man on fire he will be warm for the rest of his life.”
As a Devona’s Rest player I was actually part of a joint operation with Kaineng to fight Borlis pass (was a couple weeks ago I think). It actually worked out all right with Kaineng since it seemed to be the Devona’s Rest spearhead Borlis decided to defend against. Unfortunately our players started losing steam when we couldn’t take the first tower, and at that point Borlis was able to fend both of our servers off.
Partly I blame lack of communication, even within our own server (was hard to constantly spam our own Borderlands calling for more hands at the joint fight). I also think the lack of immediate rewards is what caused a lot of our attackers to just leave when they realized they weren’t achieving much.
I am a veteran Planetside player (Huzzah PS 2!), and we also had the 1v1v1 match up. It was “designed” that way in hopes the two weaker empires teamed up against the strongest. That happened maybe once a month. The rest of the time the two more evenly matched but smaller empires fought each other while the larger empire dominated everything. SoE tried putting in incentives to boost population but in the end was ineffective.
OP – I agree with you entirely. After seeing the average WvW player though I just don’t think we have the proper drive, ambition, or mindset to actually pull that off consistently.
If you set a man on fire he will be warm for the rest of his life.”
I see a lot of interesting ideas here, and while my post here is probably a reflection of a lot of peoples’ opinions I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.
First, this thread is meant to give ANet’s concept of off-peak hours. I agree with them. I saw previous threads where members mentioned cutting off scores or having resets or other such systems so that night time or early morning play really doesn’t impact anything…which kind of makes players that have to play at those times feel like their efforts are worthless. Having worked night shifts and other odd hours in my life, I definitely appreciate ANet’s stance on giving everyone a chance to contribute regardless of time of day.
Second, in my personal opinion it is not so much about off-peak hours, as it is population imbalance. I started on Stormbluff Isle, which wasn’t doing too bad in the rankings, but the queue was insane. So, my friends and I switched to Devona’s Rest which is seriously underpopped. For casual gamers that only have an hour or so a night to play, having immediate queues are great! However, it stinks when our pop means that not only are we always losing score-wise like 10 to 1 (which I really don’t care about), but the gameplay itself just is not fun. You have to resort to avoiding the enemy, not confronting them in this sort of scenario.
What drove the nail in the coffin is when all the guilds pooled together and formed a joint operation with the other underpopped server in our trio-match, Kaineng. It worked well for a while (mainly for Kaineng as my server took the brunt off the defense), but soon fell short and the defenders (Boris Pass) were able to push BOTH of us back. Granted, even though we lost without even taking a tower it was great fun having a more fair matchup since the defenders were split over two fronts, but these types of operations are rare and usually WvWvW for us is an enemy legion crushing our home territories.
Finally, I wanted to make a note about buffs for outmanned servers. I don’t know anything about this concept, so please forgive my ignorance. The downside to giving players a “buff” is that if you find yourself in say a 5 person raiding party, and face up against another 5 man scout party, you would want that fight to be fair regardless of population. But, for the large zerg fights, then you would need something but it’s incredibly hard to balance it properly.
Instead, I think the easier route is, as others mentioned here already, limiting the population cap to the underpopped server for ALL servers. I want to make a modification to this though: This will never apply for your “home” borderlands. I feel you should always have the right to flood in and control your home territory. Taking away an enemy territory should be a special thing. For our server, Devona’s Rest, pretty much the whole time the enemy had our Garrison…and I think we only managed to take it back early Thursday morning (which some dummy claimed for their tiny or nonexistent guild when there were several other fine choices…ANet please take a look at the guild claiming system, purdy please).
This would certainly help servers with massive populations from steamrolling lower pop servers. It would also make gameplay more fun for the underpopped server and even more of an incentive to switch. If you have the time, and can PvE while you wait, I can completely understand why players would PREFER to sit in 3 hour queue if it meant not having to get crushed all the time. What fun is that?
As a side note, I would also like to see more info on the queues. What the max pop is at the moment, your position in queue, etc. it would be nice to know if you could get an idea as to which zone to queue up for (especially if you are trying to do something as a group of friends or with your guild). Party queueing would be GREAT.
Edit: I also wanted to clarify that I personally do not care at all about points or score. Granted, it is meant to be a means to help rank servers and match them up according to skill, which I enjoy and do not wish to undermine. However I don’t think only tampering with the score system is going to solve any problems. I want to sit down after dinner, hop in game for an hour, and have a fun battle on a persistant map. Score might be nice to reflect how well we are doing, but I’m not going to get my panties in a knot if I log on and see in the night we lost the lead. As long as the fights are fun and balanced I really just don’t care about score. What would annoy me, is if I log in and see 10 times as many enemies as my own server can muster. Needless to say I am therefore always annoyed when I log on fighting for Devona’s Rest =).

I hit level 80, and am curious as to which zones are good for farming dynamic events for gold.
I’ve seen a lot of guides talking about Trading Post flipping, or mob farming spots for drops…but tbh I’m not really in the mood to just sit and farm a location, seems kinda boring to me. Really I just want to run around doing Dynamic Events.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what zones I should look into? I’m not looking for a “get-rich-quick” scheme, just something fun to do while generating cash.
Thanks for any suggestions!

I am hoping to find a Guild on the StormBluff Isle server that focuses (or has at least some players) on WvWvW. It is my favorite activity, and I wish to find like-minded individuals.
I don’t necessarily need an army, 1-5 people would be fine, but as of now I’m just kind of mindlessly following the zerg alone and am looking to enhance the experience.
Please reply here or PM me on these forums, or send me a mail in-game!
Thanks!

I started to hate the gameplay, but wanted the rewards.
So basically, you couldn’t be bothered actually spending the time to get the gear, or to enhance your skills/strategies so that you could get the gear more quickly, and so you gave up.
Poignant, really, and it’s what so many of us have been arguing here. This game is for casuals who can’t be bothered, and would rather just buy the stuff with gems.
Your post is almost too good to be true.
Oh, I still bothered. I remember frequently going to work on only a couple hours of sleep because I bothered to stay in the raids, mainly because I was young and stupid. If the gameplay itself is a bother, why then continue to play it?
GW 2 is skill dependent, not gear dependent. Victory comes because I take the time to learn my character, test different builds and methods. It comes because I take the time to learn my opponents characters, and how to best exploit their weaknesses. Bringing in friends is even better when you learn the synergy of your respective classes. I enjoy that I can go to work and do my family duties then when I have only an hour of game time I don’t have to suffer through kiddies who spent all afternoon getting better gear after school.
A friend of mine thinks just the way you do, and he is a dear friend of mine. However, he has no girlfriend, no kids, and enjoys the time commitment required to get access to better equipment in those games because he knows he has the advantage over the average player. Works out well for me when we queue a battleground as a party =). I have to respect that mentality, because he’s sacrificed a lot for it.

I don’t want to bash either side, but different players enjoy different aspects. Since GW 2 is perfectly catered toward me, I thought I would explain why and how I may differ from those desiring a gear treadmill.
I grew up playing Nintendo, then Sega Genesis. Believe it or not, to a lot of you whippersnappers out there, we never had the magical ability to “save” our progress. Nothing we earned would stick. No gear, no achievements.
And yet, I still spent hours and hours playing Streets of Rage over and over again. Why? Because I enjoyed the gameplay!
There used to be a day when FPSs also didn’t have a reward system. Ok, maybe you’d unlock some things like new weapons, but as soon as the console turned off you had to start from scratch again. I played a lot of Team Fortress Classic on the PC, and nothing ever saved. I wasn’t playing for gear, I was playing for fun.
So granted, when Everquest and Asheron’s Call came out, I was stoked. This concept of an RPG where you constantly enhance your character was fresh and wonderful. I can play to have fun AND save my rewards? Amazing!
This continued even through WoW. However, after a while, I started to realize a painful truth. I started to hate “playing” WoW. I mean, sure, it was fun at first. But then when the instances and raids continued, I realized I was excited NOT by “playing” the raids, but at the hopefulness of getting better gear. I started to hate the gameplay, but wanted the rewards. 2 Expansions later, I truly realized that at the end of the day, this treadmill would never end. It was the same stale gameplay, but they just keep putting more carrots on a stick for me to chase.
Now some of you still love this idea. GREAT! WoW is a FABULOUS game, and caters perfectly for you. But for people like me, who are sick of constantly trying to get “that better piece of gear” and want the gameplay, this is our game.
Personally, I love WvW. I played Planetside for years, and for the longest time I was at max level and never gained a THING…I played it because I loved it. WvW is the same way, I play it because I love it. It’s also wonderful to know that since max level gear is so easy to get (even if the easy stuff looks like crap lol) there is a level playing field. Anyone that played on PvP servers in WoW and enjoyed griefing lower level players, you probably aren’t even reading this because you left GW 2 already.
Now the stuff I farm for is gear that has a cooler look to it. However, I’m not running on a treadmill…I’m playing the game I want to play, saving the rewards I get, and using them to buy cooler skins. A game is done right when I can play for several days, and not only do I completely IGNORE my level bar (I thought I was 74 for a couple days when really I hit 80, I never even bothered to look), I’ll play WvW for hours, and never even check how many badges I’ve gotten. I can do this because I’m not in a WoW battleground getting insta-stomped by someone with better gear than me, and I’m just counting the amount of honor I have to purchase more gear while dredging through the battlegrounds before I have enough rewards to have fun in them.
TL-DR Version: We are all different people, who should be respected, and while I prefer GW 2’s gameplay, it is understandable why you would prefer WoW. But please don’t try to turn GW 2 into WoW, and never think your dreams and desires are the same as everyone else’s.

How to SOLVE WvWvW Queue - Death kicks you from WvW (5 minute rejoin penalty)

I wish to pose an honest question here that may aid in queue times:
How many Players here (or their respective guilds) would be willing to fight for other servers?
In the latest announcement Mike Ferguson mentioned that some servers do not have queue times, and that players should consider switching to those servers. But that is a huge pain if you already have friends or a guild you enjoy. Especially since I never see any data to give players an idea of which servers to switch to.
However, what if, just like PvE zones, we had access to Overflow WvW maps? Would that require a lot of extra programming? Even if we didn’t fight for rewards for our own server, we’d still have fun and earn personal WvW rewards…
Another option is to add additional zone servers to each WvW match. Maybe make it accessible only when the other zones are full. Heck, I wouldn’t care if they were lazy about it and just made 2-5 more Eternal Battlegrounds as exact copies of each other. At least then guilds and groups of friends can queue up and play together without a wait.
If your server with a massive population is matched up against another server with low population, then let us fight for the low population server. I understand we’re trying to “fight for our server’s ranking and bonuses”…but really, at the end of the day, I just want to log in with some buddies and hurl rocks at some enemies.
If you set a man on fire he will be warm for the rest of his life.”
There is an Auto-Loot system in options and items do stay on the corpse for a moderate amount of time if your bags are full. It’s not hard to press “F” to loot a corpse, don’t be lazy.
It’s not hard?
How many times did my character stop to start reviving an NPC while I was surrounded by 10 Risen in Orr? I just kept spamming F to get the loot and run away. Do I need to mention it takes a few seconds for the character to cancel reviving?
How many times do I get dialogue popups during escorts when I try to loot, obscuring vision and hindering combat?
How many times does my character start to mine a node next to me, when I only tried to loot, and got clobbered by a mob or five?
How many lootbags did I loose in WvW during chases and escapes, fighting on the move?
Right now the F key has to go, needs to be split into Talk, Collect, Interact buttons. Autoloot needs to be implemented for WvW. Pressing Collect should collect all items in the area.

Is the Heart of the Mists method considered an exploit? It’s a free ride to LA that I’m just betting will be removed. If it is removed, I would certainly want a free trip back to the city (ANY city) via a skill or something.

I like this idea. Some of the hearts were rather fun, and it gives you something to do while waiting for Dynamic Events to spawn.
Plus, it would be phenomenal when I downscale myself to play with friends passing through the same zones I passed through and already completed.
Unfortunately, I think it was stated that the hearts were put in there solely to encourage players to explore around a bit, since the concept of going off on your own with no direction in mind was a bit too foreign for beta testers. Dynamic Events were intended to be the meat and potatoes of questing, so I don’t know how easy it would be to convince ArenaNet to make hearts repeatable.

I have a suspicion that even if we had to go to town people would still post ridiculously cheap items on the Trading Post. There should be some sort of awareness campaign, rather than punish those of us with limited bag space who enjoy not having to constantly return to town (with a couple silver hit if we want to use a waypoint).
Plus what I’m curious about, is how does this negatively effect your gameplay? If it’s cheaper for you to vendor an item than put it on the trading post, the inconvenience is having to run and find a vendor…which is the same inconvenience in your proposal.
Plus, it means as a consumer you’d be able to purchase items for cheaper. For a time Wood was dirt cheap, and I would sell all my wood that I collected in one tier to a vendor, then buy wood I actually needed to craft for dirt cheap on the Trading Post. The loss in profit I made from wood I collected was made up for the fact that I could purchase it just as cheaply.

I’ve seen this posted around the web a couple times, so hopefully I’m not spamming this forum with repeat suggestions.
Anyway, I would like an ability to pay Real Money in some form to be able to change the race of a character.
I know with the story quests this may be rather difficult, but if it’s at all possible it would be nice to see. I could definitely see myself dropping $15-$30 to change the race of my level 80, whether through Gems or an external ArenaNet store.

I have to admit, I am a bit disappointed with the way dungeons are done in this game. I recently tried the level 30 AC (when I was level 50) with two of my friends on story mode. We were each on voice comm, and while we ended up failing due to losing all our money on repairs and losing two of our party members, I believe we would have been able to finish it (through hard work, and proper coordination and cooperation).
This implies to me that dungeons are meant for guilds of players, or frequent play-together groups that focus their characters role to fill needs in the group. This is great for a fun guild challenge.
However…When I read pre-release that “we are removing the Holy Trinity” I jumped to the conclusion that it would eliminate the need to spam chat for “Looking for Tank! Looking for Healer!”. I was hoping that any dungeon could be pugged, at least on an easy mode, and if I found myself with a spare half our in my afternoon I could just hop into a dungeon. I would love a feature where I could hop into a dungeon, complete it on easy mode in a pug in half an hour, and earn, say, 1 Token toward new gear, while other players may play in a super-hard mode guild-based dungeon that takes an entire hour and get 5 tokens toward the same gear.
For a casual gamer like me, that can’t designate that much time to do dungeons (yet I enjoy the challenge), this is a complete letdown. What’s the point in removing the holy trinity if you still need to fill roles, or equip gear based on stats?
I’m not saying to remove how difficult the exploration mode can be, I feel dedicated players who often play together should be rewarded for their cooperation and planning. But please give us casual gamers that want a quick hop-in PUG session to be enjoyable AND rewarding (even if it’s a reward at a tiny fraction of that to the hardcore players).
