[Theory] Sylvari are actually Spirits?

And now that’s wrapped up. Sylvari are SPOILER!

Dragon minions. Their consciousness comes from (perhaps it is fraction of) Mordremoth into the plant matter that composes their bodies – but the Pale Tree or “Dream” has made them forget about their origins, in some way explaining their ever restless curiosity.

Narrative Lessons From 8 Releases of Season 2

Elesh.6192

TLDR, but I did prefer the massive world events of season one and how they could be more easily tied with the storyline and aid in portraying the ongoing war, than the solo instances. They did make the world feel more alive, and much much more epic – yes, I’m talking about you, Invasions, Tower of Nightmares, Twisted Marionette and Lion’s Arch – and still it made use of instances such as Scarlet’s lair, or the end of the Breachmaker.

Bring back that feeling anyday over solo instances.

Somehow, even in the hour of triumph against a dragon lieutenant, I found myself hesitating to land the Killing blow.
Perhaps because my main is a Sylvari, I actually sought for other options than to kill the Shadow, and only after finding none I reluctantly ended it but not without feeling empathy for the dying beast and a sense of shallow victory. Corruption’s effects?

Pleased by the storytelling, and the fact that it did not feel like vanquishing another faceless horror for a change.

Reasons I am starting to dislike GW2

in Lore

Elesh.6192

Scarlet was in fact what GW2’s story needed to progress, given that the sheer amount of unknown would take pages on pages of theorcraft and narrative to expand upon, whereas she was given the knowledge we lacked and according to many, needed to enjoy the story.

And she would’ve worked perfectly to provide lore and knowledge and motives and secrets of her Dragon master, as player forces and pact would bleed them out her and her allies.

Alas, she was killed off ironically too soon to be able to take on that role, leaving us with nothing too clear to look forward to but have events unfold beyond our reach – and entirely scrambled enemy factions.

Is Aerin a Soundless?

in Lore

Elesh.6192

Indeed, it did not strike me as thetypical joy as in “Things are going well”. To me it very much looked like the kind of euphoria one acquires from a supreme realization, or potentially the opposite – the touch of a Dragon’s hive mind, or generally influence, in that it would seem “right” for the character in question to follow the directives suggested, thus the feeling of joy.

Scarlet felt a rush of joy the very moment she ignored the Pale Tree’s final warning and proceeded out of her boundaries, Aerin’s turning point might’ve been something different, but with the same end result. Perhaps Mordremoth does call to Sylvari as their true creator? Either way “I shall record every moment on this journal” does not strike me as a particularly level-headed statement to make.

“I shall record every moment in my journal so that even those who can’t access the Dream know the ~joy~ I’m experiencing.”

Where have we heard of this before?

The Pale Tree’s voice was faint and distant, but it snapped Ceara back to viewing the tree from a distance.
" If you are not one with what you were born to be, you are lost. Worse, you are dangerous."

~~Sheer joy surged through Ceara.~~

“Dangerous, you say? Her thoughts boomed loud as thunder across the void. So be it.”

I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Either these two realized something likewise euphoric, or the same joy was a byproduct of Draconic corruption?

20/10.

Shaky introduction, and I will admit that my non-literal love for her has developed over time. Now I find myself fondly looking back at the time she was formally introduced in Divinity’s Reach, her chilling 12 seconds “Theme”, and the developement her behaviour and actions had taken from there. Her short story, as I suspected, contained all the answers from the very start – it was simply a matter of deciphering and understanding, as a good story should be.

I do not like my characters pointed with a marker too clearly.

Contrary to what most may say, and this coming from a very avid lore shark, Scarlet has been the most interesting antagonist I had seen in a long, long time, waking ranges of emotions that go from wicked giggling to actual sorrow for her fate, and how -actually- dramatic her character had been from the very start, hiding under the veil of lunacy and prankster-y while struggling with her own sanity.

I also loved the narrative route taken, where opposing to multiple stories, the “reader” only knows as much as our characters do. Kudos for not feeding us every bit of information right from the start – I really appreciated that.

I’ll remember Scarlet, that is for sure.

Good job Anet, and rest in peace, Scarlet.

Job-o-Hobo-Ho-Ho-Tron and sentience

in Lore

Elesh.6192

The Job-O-Tron is likely ownerless by now since the engagement of its “Tertiary directive”, hence why the golem itself was put on trial rather than its former owner of whom the Human ministers may not even know of.

Rather than free, independant thinking, Ho-Ho-Tron’s current acts may be nothing else than adapting to calculated odds for its prolonged existance – what’s this Tertiary objective?

“Job–o–Tron: Departure–of–the–settlers–diminishes–my–ability–to–perform–my–primary–function.
Job–o–Tron: I–will–miss–my–quota–and–be–downsized. They–may–even–replace–me–with–a–non-golem.
Job–o–Tron: Tertiary–objective–activated. Step–one: Acquire–object–designated–”hobo–bindle."
Job–o–Tron: Step–two: Proceed–with–new–career–as–a–wastrel–and/or–vagrant. "

The three laws of robotics:

1.A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2.A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3.A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Even though the first and second may not apply altogether to Golems made by the Consortium, there’s a possibility that having failed to fulfill its original intent, left the poor Tron with nothing else to aim for but fulfill the “Tertiary objective” at the best of its abilities, scrounging money for survival and seeking employment.

If that’s the case, then all of its current endeavors come from objeying a clear, pre-built subroutine alongside with logical assessments on the situations and actions dictated more-or-less by said cold logic (Such as offering to become Scarlet’s Henchgolem.) rather than true free will.

Could the flame Legion rejoin the Charr?

in Lore

Posted by: Elesh.6192

Elesh.6192

As the world goes on, the Charr have allied themselves with their most sworn enemies – the humans, whose remnants still plague Ascalon in the form of ghosts and separatists.

Historically speaking, if it were not for the Flame Legion, the Charr would have never conquered Ascalon, or breached the wall without the Searing Cauldrons. At the time, the Charr were in disarray and barbaric, knowing little else than the fact that “Aliens” backed up by immensly powerful beings took their ancestral lands – at the time, could a Charr really blame the Flame Legion for seeking out a power, as treacherous as it may have been, to rival that of the Humans of the time? While their devotion to the Titans was overly Zealous, they did get things done – possibly saved the Charr themselves from extinction if Ascalon were ever to expand eastwards.

Fast foward to the modern day, why exactly are the Flame Legion in such direct conflict with the others anymore? The Titans as far as one can see, are defeated and dormant. Even the Flame Legion in game does not appear to visibly worship anything specific any longer – in fact, they’re possibly in Greater disarray than they’ve ever been themselves. The “Effigies” hardly look as gods to worship, but rather constructs with fire elementals stuffed inside for power: is such a thing any worse than a steam tank? In the first path of the Flame Citadel, the one attempting to command the Effigy is not referred as priest, or any such term, but rather a Forgemaster, hinting that even the Flame Legion no longer worship “Effigies” but they are nothing else than tools of war. Finally, the Effigies look exactly like Charr – hardly a sign of worshipping anything different than themselves.

The females have by now proven their Worth (Although the discrimination against Female Charr didn’t really seem to have any solid reasoning to even be, but more added to portrait the Flame as “evil” ) and again, if Charr agreed to a truce with Humans, would they really be intent on slaughtering their own kind – which possibly wields power that would make the Charr, as whole stronger?

With the titans gone, no longer having any “god” to worship, enlighten me if there are any further reasons as to why the Flame Legion would not accept to bow their heads and re-join the others admitting their Titans were a mistake of their ancestors, rather than creating unlikely alliances with the Dredge(Who are among the most xenophobic races in the world), and ultimately be annhilated to the last.

Should Sylvari have never been made?

in Lore

Posted by: Elesh.6192

Elesh.6192

There’s also another way to redeem them storywise, without needing to retcon on how they are and how the story wanted to present them to us so far. As much as people may dislike it, in more than one fantasy game there’s been races that are on a higher tier of power, behaviour and intellect than others.

Make something bad happen to the “good” sylvari. Even going as far as to destroy the pale tree.

It will expand on the possibility of being other groves, perhaps less sentient than the Pale Tree is – it will give the childlike Sylvari a dramatic, emotional shove towards maturity once their know-it-all eternal mother is gone. It will add depths to most of their characters once they have to face the world with their own strength alone, some will turn more resolute, others will fall into doubt – but overall, it may just be the shock therapy the idylliac, all too perfect race needs to have to take their role in the war-torn Tyria. Literally ever other race has a background of loss and recovery.

Who would do such a thing? Of course not the nightmare court – they wish to “help” the Mother fall into Nightmare, not eradicate her – but options are aplenty. Dragon minions, dragons themselves fed up with the endless supply of stalwart defenders the Tree produces, or even misguided members of the other races (Such as, a xenophobic Charr leader) who deem the aforementioned evergrowing supply of possibly immortal creatures as a future cause of troubles for their own kind.

Queen Jennah isn't real

in Lore

Elesh.6192

Counter argument to Jennah is an illusion – a theory which is as asinine as Grenth=Menzies (both being related to darkness and destruction; one a half-god, the other implied to be one; etc.) which I came up for laughs a long while back. Edge of Destiny, Jennah and Anise are alone together, and they’re having a conversation. Only counter-argument is that Anise is mentally unstable, in which I doubt she’d be able to maintain such an elaborate act.

OBJECTION!

It is thoroughly proved by the “Fight Club” files, and countless other testaments to tricksters, deceivers and mentally unstable subjects that going as far as to build two (or more) individual, even conflicting and argumentative personalities is nothing else but the endgame of a long-term inner and outer facade being held too long.

As the accusation’s thesis that our beloved Queen has indeed something to hide gains in substance the likelihood of a squabble between “Anise” and “Jenna” having any relevant weight in this trial decreases substantially.

Queen Jennah isn't real

Posted by: Elesh.6192

Elesh.6192

I am actually tempted to agree with it.

There were no clear hints of an attack on the pavillon during the last speech, yet the Queen disappeared into butterflies at the sign of danger.

Another thing to consider: Rants about Scarlet aside, she has been portrayed as an exceptionally cunning individual: to which I wonder, how is it possible she could not have predicted the Queen being a clone? Or perhaps, the “Clone” was being so utterly perfected by Anise to be the queen herself, that distinguishing such was impossible even for Scarlet?
Wouldn’t Scarlet’s Asuran Magitech have allowed her to know that the Queen was in fact a construct made out of chaotic magic?

Also – A normal Clone, may have just shattered when the ledge the “Queen” was on wakitten by the explosion. What reason could ever compel a magical, ephemeral creation to stare up in worry at Lord Faren before disappearing, causing him to risk his life in the process? It could just be that the Clone acted so naturally because it -was- the Queen.

This can mean two things:

1) She will be a behind the curtain ruler at all times – why ever risk her life for pubblic attendances, if she can Always appear in the form of an illusion from her favorite mesmer? Rather hypocrital when giving the “No matter the danger, I’ll still celebrate the pavillon.” A behind the curtain ruler, is no ruler at all, most of the time.

2) She does indeed not exist, or is Anise herself.

Either options leave me a bit bitter, for some reason.

Now, when will we have an actual Charr racial leader, I wonder? Squabbling, desk-dwellers are hardly compelling Tribunes.

After a long while, I finally managed to get Liadri down too – no screen avaiable, though.

Took about 140 tries, at least, having problems to see which areas had the red dots did not make it any easier, playing a large Charr warrior made it even less easy.

At the end, the stars decided to align in my favour: The first time caught by Shadowfall, an Orb spawned right next to me for an avaiable rally, at 20% I died by Liadri’s own damage, and somehow, someway two illusions hit my downed body in that half second of invulnerability. They collapsed and I rallied on the spot, finishing Liadri off.

Hello there. Recently returning to GW in sight of the events, I was pleasantly surprised by almost all of them. In a few days, I again got the will to play the game, run instances, and complete achivements, finally getting the hellfire gauntlets. All in all, the game was starting to entertain me again, until the brick wall – Liadri.

Now, I do not consider myself a bad player. In “another game”, for a certain class, there is a quest with a similiar 1v1 boss – and I can frankly say that due to mechanics and overall gameplay, that fight is indeed several times harder than Liadri. That, I finished with enough attempts, much gold spent, but overall a great satisfaction. The fight was long, and phases different, requiring you to squeeze every bit from your character to prevail.

To top it off, I was among the first on the server to defeat said boss – what is the problem, then?

Simply put, I am colorblind. No matter how I squint – and trust me, I tried, I am simply and completely unable to see the light, light red lines on the reticule metal ground. It is simply not something I can do (Note – I did have the same problems on Lupicus, but the fact that the ground was solid, and had a sharply different colour, made it so that with a range class, I could manage to never get hit if I tried hard.)

Was it a “challenge” factor to make the instant Death move terribly hard to notice? Because honestly, skill in playing a mmo shouldn’t be on catching the tiny details of a red line. It is frustrating me to no end, and after about fifty attempts and much gold spent, I gave up.

The difference, is that on the first example, I never died because of something physically difficult to do. I died because of the fight being genuinely hard, and because I was attempting to find ways around the different phases, balancing dps and survival. Comparatevely, Liadri’s fight is -EXTREMELY- simple. The Orbs do not require great thoughts to cast, and the second phase is merely an option between range and kite or melee and try to finish it off quickly. There is no real execution. The fight’s randomness, coupled with the bridge-running to return to battle, is one of the most annoying things I have done in years in a MMO.

And there is a difference, between that one boss that annoys you, but also fills you with determination to continue, and another that makes you want to shut off the game.

My proposed fix, is not to decrease difficulty – a fight should be difficult (although, Liadri’s reward is nothing to brag home about), but rather to make the fight an actual challenge for the player, rather than being a sight test, or a test of luck.

Make the instant Death aoe more visible: paint the area black, is it that hard?
