Time and time again I’ve tried to come back to Guild Wars 2 only to run into a problem. The classes that I think look interesting are “no good” or can only be used in certain ways.

Staff necro?
“Lolno, here try these daggers.”
Longbow ranger?
“Only if you want to be lame and never want to do a dungeon, I don’t care what the class description said grab some axes or whatever!”

I’m confused and a bit miserable. Is it okay to try and play a class the way I want or will I be expected to conform to the current meta the instant I try and do anything endgame? Why haven’t things been balanced out a bit more? People make it seem like if you do X or Y you’ll never win or be invited to anything. Whole classes have been designated “near useless” for huge aspects of the game.

Tl;dr Should I suck it up and just roll a Warrior? What are my options here if I want a long-ranged class that can do WvW and PVE.

I would completely believe you about rangers except for the fact I know, from first hand experience, that pets are completely and horrifically broken. Not happy op broken, but more like my pet sits there uselessly or dies very quickly and I’m out 30-40% dps while in dungeons… broken.

I have several level 40+s, but each time I get to that level I seem to get bored. Right now elementalist, mes and ranger are all 40+ and I want to try out warrior or thief next… but I can’t decide.

I’d love to be playing my ranger, but from what I keep hearing they are broken and I can’t be happy with a class that deep in the back of my head I know is broken and weak.

I love mesmer but I need an alt so I don’t burn out.

I hesitate to play thief because it’s squishy for the damage it does. And I smell a nerf.
I hesitate to play warrior because there’s like two sets of heavy armor that look halfway decent, and both at level 80. So I’d have to look like crap from 1-80 and that’s just not appealing to me. Shallow? Perhaps.

I really only like Twilight, and I think 100% of them look overdone and garish. Even Twilight. Twilight is just the least offensive of them.

I was really disappointed in them.

Thanks for the thumbs up everyone. I really appreciate all the helpful (and even the not so nice) comments.

I feel that privacy is very important in large communities like this one, and I have only recently learned how little of it we get in Guild Wars 2. Honestly it’s getting to the point where I’m having a hard time enjoying myself in game knowing I’m so exposed.
I know it sounds silly to some of you, and I don’t expect everyone to understand but it’s very real for me, and many others.

I really hope ANet will give us more privacy options.

I don’t understand your feeling of being exposed. What sort of things happen that make you uncomfortable? Where do you think those feelings come from?

Why would you play an online game when that means that other’s actions could affect you? Does it ring illogical to you to feel so ‘exposed’ in an online game where no one could possibly know your name, address, personality or favorite color unless you tell them?

Again, I’m sorry, I just don’t understand.

It’s never been done before, and the amount of work involved would mean that only the very largest game companies could afford to try and attempt it.

I would play a centaur if they did decide to make them, and I would applaud their bravery of going for something that is difficult INSTEAD OF GOING THE EASY ROUTE.

I don’t think anyone here is suggesting that the blame lies on ANet. I see this thread as a request for a couple of simple changes to the friend list functionality that would make the game a less “stalker-friendly” place.

And if you would kindly go back and read my post again, carefully, I would point out I addressed that at least somewhat. It is up to everyone to protect themselves from stalking.

If you feel threatened you need to block/ignore them. Acknowledging their act only gives them power and they escalate. So what if they can tell where you are? If they are stalking you they probably have a good idea where you are regardless.

What I was attempting to say is don’t blame the game for not helping you. Everyone has the tools to stop such behavior.

tl;dr Make block actually work but at the same time stand up to stalkers. Also, don’t use hypothetical hyperbole tinfoil hat arguments to make your points more valid. (Not aimed at you Spiral)

hmm. If you had such a violent relationship and have a person tracking you on real life how about you just pick up a new copy of Guild Wars 2, that it’s likely you will do. I don’t see the problem.

A) Because that is unnecessary when GW2 is a tweak away from fixing the problem and one of the only MMOs available that actively ENABLES stalking. That’s even assuming she has the 50 dollars to throw away on a pointless venture C) So your suggestion is that she give up everything in her character that she’s worked on just so that stalking can continue to be easy in the game?

Not to mention police should know about it and you should have some security at your place. Otherwise the person could just as well wait for you to go back from work at your door step just as efficiently.

The police knowing about it doesn’t change that there is danger. And not everyone who has trouble with another person and has their personal welfare endangered suddenly grows a money tree in the backyard with which to fund security systems, new copies of GW2 and whatever else.

You could also be logging and playing on your account from a different location, like for example your friend’s house.

Or she could be home. And him knowing that puts her in danger.

I’m pretty sure that a) he wouldn’t bother checking GW2 for her and just stalk her house and beat her to death there (so much simpler) b) she would have changed the place she lives in and WOULD buy a new copy.

You’re trying to downplay a very real possibility, due to your own insensitivity, by trying to say that it is “unlikely”. Shall we just go a step farther and say “It’s unlikely he’d even stalk her since that isn’t normal, so stalking doesn’t exist”? Sounds legit to me!

Stalkers aren’t some mythical monster with no other whims or desires. They dont sit around all day thinking “stalk stalk stalk stalk” and then when the opportunity appears, they strike. They do have other things they enjoy doing, and if they happen to play GW2 they will very likely be on it at some point. If that happens to be the same time the person they are stalking logs on? Welp, sucks to be them.

While I do think game companies have a responsibility to make sure people aren’t breaking the rules and to punish them properly if they have it is EXTREMELY difficult to prove that someone is stalking you. It’s just as hard to prove it in real life as well.

I think it’s everyone’s responsibility to protect themselves as much as they can ingame, it shouldn’t all be Anet’s fault if something has happened. Stalking is bad, but it’s something only you can protect yourself from.

Additional friendlist features and restrictions may help, but at the same time adding in more functions is going to make things more complex for the percentage of people who aren’t being stalked. Which is, I gather, higher than the percentage of people being stalked.

Right now everyone is talking in the hypothetical with a side of hyperbole. With a dash of tin-foil-hat level paranoia. No, I don’t agree that online stalking should be treated with this level of hateful responses, personal derangement and vitriol. Yes, I have been stalked online and not in a pleasant way. (People basically followed me around to spread hateful comments about me and deliver death threats) The stalker only gets power over you if you let them. If you shut them down every chance then they can’t get to you. Ever. Ever. EVER.

Yeah, it’s upsetting. But in the end you are the only one who can stop it. Block them, contact Anet etc etc. But don’t say, “It’s all friendlists fault because they can see where you are and add you without your consent.”

Plus, if I was completely honest, if someone started stalking me I’d turn it into the biggest troll opportunity EVAR.

Tase — it’s really difficult, nearly impossible, for our team to intercede in what are, essentially, “Gentlemen’s agreements.” You said the price was “too good to be true” and yet you accepted it and got burned. Like the guy in the alley who says he’s going to sell you a “Rolex” watch for 10 bucks?

I sympathize, we all sympathize, but getting in the middle of every transaction is just not in the cards. Reporting the situation is good — it makes us aware of the unscrupulous players and, once highlighted, may allow us to track a history of bad behavior that results in their removal from the game. But it’s truly unlikely that we will be able to give that item or gold back for you.

In all transactions, use caution and care, just as you do in real life.

I also got scammed and sent in a ticket only to be told there is nothing you guys could do. A lot of people had to resort to mail, which CONVENIENTLY doesn’t have a cash on delivery option for trade. Why?

Because Trading Post/Auction House technology is new and frightening! Oh wait, no, we mastered that awhile back didn’t we? So it was down for what, two weeks? Our banks were full (almost convenient how that happened? Forced a lot of us to buy bank slots) and we had to get rid of some things.

Some disreputable player comes along and steals our item. And you say you can’t do anything? Not even ingame mediation?

You aren’t sympathetic, you are apathetic.

Tl;dr We don’t care and there’s nothing we can do. Even though it was OUR fault that you had to trade with mail because the Trading Post was down. AND because we didn’t put in a Cash on Delivery option. So the guy who scammed you is going to get away blemish free. Sucks about your money, 3g is a lot to lose. But we can’t FORCE someone to pay you.

We also apparently can’t punish him either. Not like someone so dishonest or immoral could go on and do other toxic things, right? Life isn’t fair, you know!

I have two tickets that have been ignored and unanswered and then randomly CLOSED. Because they both concern things that prevent me from playing how I want or make me uncomfortable (one is a gem store “card approval fail” ticket, the other one was I got scammed) I have pretty much lost all interest in playing the game.

Even logging in makes me miserable, frustrated and angry. Why? Because I have things that are preventing me from enjoying the game. Things that nag at me (“Card approval failed”) or things that make me just livid (got scammed, before trading post thing).

Support has failed completely in assisting me with anything. And it’s not as if I didn’t give them time. The “Card approval failed” ticket is 15 days old, the scammed ticket is 18. EIGHTEEN DAYS. Not a SINGLE response.

I understand that you guys are busy, but you are failing on every level and because of it I’ve lost the will to play. Congratulations.

My ticket is now “Closed”. You know what? I’m so unbelievably frustrated and livid that they would CLOSE my ticket. I haven’t gotten ANY sort of response from support after this. THAT WAS FIVE DAYS AGO. On a ticket from THE 31ST. Fifteen days.

And just a closed ticket without any further response.

You DO REALIZE there are less time consuming ways to give people the middle finger, right?

Well, after posting in this thread I was really hopeful that I would get a positive response from support. But after hearing what the response has been for other people…

Why is it impossible for them to give a response on this matter? Obviously some accounts should be flagged as high risk, especially ones utilizing Paypal which is notorious to the point most Free 2 Play game companies put a limit on how much you can buy with Paypal. (Like Webzen and Perfect World (the company))

But those using credit cards shouldn’t be punished! Hell, no account should be punished without an explanation. That is completely uncalled for. And there should be a way to unflag your account if you talk to support.

It’s wrong that the only option is that we get a new credit card and account!

I’ve had the card approval failed error off and on, but most of the time it simply won’t let me buy. I’ve tried paypal and three different credit cards, all are ones that I’ve been using for a long time. I would say it gives me the error 95% of the time, and I attempt it often.

I have the money, but you guys just don’t seem to want it!

I’m having the same problem. I’ve been whining to them on twitter and I’ve sent in a ticket but have received NO response on this matter. Luckily, it seems to fluctuate. I can usually buy gems once every two days or so, then it locks up again with the “Card approval failed”.

I’ve tried paypal and three different credit cards. Maybe that’s what my problem was? Too many different purchase methods caused my account to be flagged?

But I’ve paid them every time I’ve bought gems, I wish they could unflag my account! I’m tempted to get a new account and credit card just to buy gems!
