How to make Thief work for a Noob!?

Ive been struggling to find a class i can main since like gw2 came out, ive been playing on and off since then. So yesterday i created a Charr Thief cause i like the fantasy of a Thief cat.
Anyway ive tried thief on 80, and i feel like they die easier than a zerker guardian, but dont kill as fast as other zerker classes. Also yesterday i tried Metabattle builds. And boy conquest pvp, or spvp what you wanna call it. I died freaking instantly. Im not sure how to learn thief when i never get the chance to like do any real PvP. It feels like the rest of the pvp community are lightyears ahead in skills.

I want to make thief work cause they got cool abilities etc, but as a kitten player it does seem like the classic warrior is the only choice :/ even tho i feel like they die easy to :/

Go into your build panel and pick invigorating precision. You’ll go from dying all the time to being the one all your dead teammates are yelling at to “reset” and “/gg.” Then, if you really want to go all-in, go to amazon.com, buy a Logitech G13, and map dodge to your joystick press-down.

I would love to see more casual looking clothes. My absolute favorite is the outfit that looks like a rockabilly suit. So bored of bulky armor and spaceman/robocop outfits in the gemsore. Players would love this. Nobody’s here to roleplay..

fractals really suck compared to dungeons

Fallesafe.5932

My dungeon experience: difficult to learn but somewhat fun. Still need a lot of practice, haven’t done them all. But overall, if we except the toxic community, they’re really fun! I got a lot of exotic gear and plenty of tokens for some exotic world vs world pvp gear and a lot of pve gear too. Overall loot is great. Plenty of “I hate melee characters, signed: the dev team” bosses but overall it can be solved with proper use of aegis. But they do look dated and buggy, also there aren’t any from the new zones.

My fractal experience: annoying mechanics that require cooperation. Not allowed to have a couple of players who have no clue about what’s going on. Too many fractals and the progression system discourages learning how bosses work and their special one shot kill animation. Plenty of “melee characters can go f* themselves” mechanics but this time there’s no real way around it except circling around the boss or the thing like an idiot until he’s done with the annoying parts. Loot is also really, really terrible. It’s just crappy RNG and no good gear is in sight. I only got a few trash rares i can’t even use and so far the grind seems really long and boring. Daily tokens are also for rings only and very, very scarce, that’s awful.

Am I missing something or did the company making this game decided to push much more grindy and annoying content for no reason at some point, and if so, why?

I feel the exact opposite (i.e. that dungeons suck compared to fractals). I just dinged into fractal-scale 100 five mins ago; and I love doing them. I’m usually top DPS in my groups,, and the last one standing when my everyone wipes. But when I go into dungeons, I get steamrolled over and over. They seem WAY harder and more annoying. Maybe it’s just that I’m really inexperienced at them, and don’t know the mechanics. Or maybe its that I join horrendous pickup groups. But I HATE dungeons with a passion…

As a newbie, how do I get into fractals?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Fallesafe.5932

Fallesafe.5932

Fractals of the Mists look interesting, but since they first released I have always been too intimidated to try them. I don’t even know where to begin.
I’m not willing to grind or craft for a perfect set of ascended gear—will I ever be able to do Fractals without it? Or do all Fractals groups require super specific gear on each player?
In terms of combat itself—learning boss mechanics, dodging, ect, I have no problem. But I despise having to pay close attention to every specific and stat of my gear; or having to pay a large sum of gold to get the right gear to participate. Advise?

Let me try to address all the points you raised. There are 100 levels to the fractal system. But there are only 16 different fractals. They just repeat in more annoying and more tedious forms. After level 20, you start encountering agony; and need increasing amounts of agony resistance. That’s where the ascended gear comes in (each piece of ascended gear has slots for agony infusions — where exotic gear does not). But, prior to level 20, you don’t need a lick of agony resistance. And there’s no reason why you can’t just jump in and do it right now.

Most people in the tier 1 fractals are learning just like you. If you want to get ahead of the curve, then go to this YouTube channel and check out the mechanics that are involved in each fractal. It’s really easy. Just jump in and start doing them. There’s nothing to be intimidated about. If you want to send me a message in game, I’ll do them with you.

Viper's or Berserker's stats for Soulbeast?

Fallesafe.5932

I’m going to be gearing up a new ranger for the expansion. And I want to choose equipment-stats that will work best for the soulbeast. I noticed that a lot of the new skills seem to place an emphasis on condition damage. Is it reasonable to assume that most soulbeasts will be running around in Viper’s gear? Or does it look like Berserkers gear would be more viable? I really just don’t want to waste time getting all the wrong stuff (esp. those nuissance trinket farms). Any thoughts?

I cant decide between thief or ranger

in Ranger

Fallesafe.5932

My main was a condition-ranger with all BiS gear. I rolled a thief out of curiosity, and loved it so much that I havent logged onto my ranger again in the last 4 months. With the thief, I’m almost always doing top damage in my groups. Sometimes I do more damage than the entire rest of my group combined. And I’m almost always the one still fighting after everyone else has wiped. I literally carry more than half The groups I join. The thief is an absolute monster. He has endless dodges. And, with invigorating precision, can practically face-tank things. Unbelievably mobile. Has a good 30 seconds of uninterrupted stealth even with a full DPS build. And it’s SOOO easy to play. You can literally hit nothing but “1” and still out-damage 90% of the people you ever group with.

Thief all day, every day. I don’t see my ranger getting any more play. I have no interest honestly.

Fallesafe.5932

Maybe you can’t, but this doesn’t go for everyone. And while I know this is an old, old argument, I’ve never seen anyone actually answer this to my satisfaction: How the heck are you able to more easily identify with an Asura, a Charr or a Sylvari than the opposite gender?

Simple… the unconventional races correspond to particular aspects of temperament and personality. Asura appeals to people who idealize intelligence or humor. Sylvari appeals to people with a naturalistic and/or aesthetic ideal. And Charr appeal to people who idealize/admire strength and the projection of power.

Selecting a character is a very personal process. And men who play female characters are responding to feminine aspects in their nature. Don’t be afraid to admit it.

Does anyone else feel uneasy playing a toon of the opposite gender, I do.

I’m a guy, and even though most female toons are more pleasing on the eye to look at, playing one just makes me feel, “Strange”, not to mention the countless guys hitting on my toon, only to find out I’m a guy, and calling me well, some unpleasant names to say the least.

Like I want to make a female norn warrior, because I don’t like how the male norn’s torso seems to be shorter on one side than the other, lol.

Yea, I agree OP. You can’t enjoy the game or become immersed in it unless you identify on a fairly deep level with your character. Guys who play female characters are just feminine men in RL (which is fine I guess). A number of my good friends play female characters. And they’re great people who I enjoy hanging out with. But they absolutely have a lot of feminine qualities. And I think they just enjoy the chance to express and experiment with those qualities when they play their various games (although they would never admit it… And would probably say a lot of the things that have already been said by people in this thread).

Use for HoT ascended crafting materials.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Fallesafe.5932

Fallesafe.5932

So i was thinking about what we can do with materials such as Ley Line Sparks, Airship Oil and Pile of Auric dust as you get insane amounts of those when you open chests on HoT maps. If you are not upgrading guild hall their only usage is to make fulgurite and i don’t think that you need a couple of stacks of those constantly(at least i don’t). That’s why this materials usually end up taking a lot of inventory space or just getting destroyed.

What if we were able to salvage them for 1-3 of currency of given map. For eg 1 Airship Oil for 1-3 Airship Parts and so on. Another option would be creating a gizmo like those from season 3 or Mawdrey II/Princess which would use these materials. What do you think about this?

P.S Sorry if topic like this was already created but i couldn’t find any on the forum.

Every game currency should be convertible to any other game currency — just like RL currency exchanges are a thing. I find it so absurd that I have hundreds of units of 12 seperate bizarre and obscure map currencies that I’ll NEVER have reason to spend…. But I can’t buy an Augur’s Stone because I don’t have enough spirit shards.

If I go to some wierd dungeon, out of boredom, and spend an hour running all the paths, then I’ve created an hours worth of VALUE through that play. Why shouldn’t it be convertible to something I can actually use?? This seems like a major no-brainer.

Group Content, forced socialization?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fallesafe.5932

Fallesafe.5932

Thoughts? Ideas? Too bad so sad go away?

I dont totally get the complaint about “forced socialization.” In 99% of pickup groups I’ve ever participated in, the extent of my “socialization” is to say “hi” or “hey” at the beginning. And, unless you’re talking about raids or T4 challenge-mote fractals, nobody is ever getting kicked out of groups for their ridiculous/terrible builds. Then I think you touched on the issue of “not knowing every aspect of the event/content…” which can be solved, in almost every case by just watching a couple YouTube videos on it.

I think you’re kinda making something out of nothing. In fairness to your argument, people can be pretty obnoxious and insufferable sometimes. But those occasions are very rare. And you can blow it right back in their faces whenever it happens (seriously). I’m a VERY introverted person myself. But I just made the decision that I’m not gonna let my enjoyment of the game be limited by the possibility some land-whale might criticize my play. My advice is that you just make a small effort to grow a thicker skin. Do your best, and F the haters.

tldr: GW2’s loot system is excessive in quantity and poor in quality. It needs to change before it drives me away from the game again. I want to enjoy GW2, but poorly implemented systems like this…

100% agreed. I have 8 20-slot bags that are continually filling up with absolute garabage that I do not want at all. Why don’t you give us an option to filter loot by quality? I would happily hit a few check boxes to filter out every piece of loot that isn’t exotic or ascended. That would be so great. Just keep all that other junk and let me know when something good comes in.

Problem with Goldsellers

Fallesafe.5932

So since I would feel bad for buying something which has far less worth than simply buying gold, I have a hard time even wanting to buy anything….
So instead of me starting to use extra money on stories, later the cool tool animations (which they where just animations as I am using magic tools), perma bank stuff etc etc etc. I am constantly recalculating what that would be in pure gold and therefore coming to the conclusion that buying anything else is pointless and again I will Not buy ingame currency as it is cheating etc. as mentioned (and I could use 1 day at work and buy 3200g+ ingame (200€=16000gem= 100g per 500gem, so 3200g), making any time I use ingame on gaining anything an utter and complete wasted of time which will instantly turn me off from playing as any time spend I should just be paying my way out off…)

This is like the philosopher-donkey who starved to death between two equally tall and succulent piles of hay, because he could find no reason to pick one over the other. I find your “dilemma” kind of baffling lol. First, it sounds to me like you have the kind of money to easily do both (expansion + gold) and not feel it. So I’m at a loss to understand why you’re wringing your hands and sweating over such a pittance to just buy the freaking expansion. It’s peanuts! Second, it sounds to me like you really don’t enjoy playing the game very much, and should probably just find something better to do with your time.

Why is shortbow recommended for PvE?

in Thief

Posted by: Fallesafe.5932

Fallesafe.5932

I’m confused about why shortbow is recommended as the secondary weapon for a berserker/staff build (https://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Daredevil_-_Berserker_Staff). According to metabattle, it’s for stacking might and stealth inbetween encounters. But I run pickup fractal groups where nobody has any clue about stacking might. And, since I’m not doing dungeons, I find that I have very little need for stealth. So I spend 95% of my time with pistol/pistol in secondary; and I only equip shortbow for the occasional shadowstep.

Can somebody help me understand the rationale behind using shortbow, or sword/pistol in secondary for PvE? The DPS of pistol/pistol is like 2x better than either of those choices. Basically, I have 3 questions:

1) Stacking might is not something I can do solo, right? It involves somebody in the group dropping a fire-field, and everybody else in the group hitting it with blast finishers?
2) Does the shortbow have any advantages over pistol/pistol if you’re not stacking might or stealth?
3) What advantages does sword/pistol have over pistol/pistol? Are the blinds actually worth losing all your punch at range?

A lot of times, I need to get out of melee range to let my heal cooldown, or to soak up a bunch of smaller heals from 3x unload + invigorating precision. I can’t see a reason to give up all the extra dps plus the avalanche of personal heals that come from pistol/pistol. What am I not undersrtanding here?

Stealth guide/instruction

Fallesafe.5932

Here are two very good instructional videos. These are the ones I learned from.

1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deJy6EjU26s
2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0rR6MgFsps

I know that a lot of people like to throw pistol into the mix with the shortbow. Personally, I never saw the point. It doesn’t add much extra stealth, and leaves you with sub-optimal weapons if you get caught.. My favorite method gives 26 seconds of continuous stealth, and leaves you with staff (or dagger/dagger) in primary:

Staff in primary
Shortbow in secondary
Smokescreen ready
Shadow Refuge ready
options > show skill recharge (so you have a numerical timer on your cooldowns)

1) Hit smokescreen, and blast it 5 times with your number 2 Shortbow skill (Cluster bomb). This will give you ~8 seconds of stealth.
2) As you run, keep your mouse on the stealth icon to watch the timer.
3) When you’re down to the last second, hit Shadow Refuge and target yourself.
4) Wait for the house icon over your head to disappear before you leave the circle. This will give you another ~10 seconds of stealth.
5) As you run, watch your cooldown on smokescreen. It will refresh a couple seconds before shadow refuge runs out.
6) As soon as smokescreen refreshes, hit it and reapeat step1. This will give you another ~8 seconds of stealth.

You could equip pistol/dagger with shortbow and blast your number 5 pistol skill for an extra ~4 seconds of stealth. But I find it awkward as hell to do. It’s an inconsequential extra bit of stealth. And then I don’t have access to my strongest weapon. So, personally, I don’t bother. 26 seconds is an eternity of stealth. Good enough.

Feedback:why gf couldn't get into this game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fallesafe.5932

Fallesafe.5932

I think you missed the OP’s point … it wasn’t the level up that made his GF quit, it was the simple storyline. To be frank, the level up experience in this game is comparatively simple and fast. I can’t imagine anyone truly complaining about GW2 that has any sort of experience with other MMO’s. In truth, there are few MMO’s that have significant content outside of leveling below their max level ranges; there is a perfectly good reason for that …. because you don’t do it again once you have leveled. It’s the nature of the genre. GW2 actually does a better job of that than most with the downscaling.

No, I understand the OP’s point (that the story is uninspiring). And I’m afraid I didn’t express myself very well in response. I’m not saying that the level-up is difficult or long. I was an EverQuest player; and I KNOW what a long and sadistic level-up is like. What I’m saying is that there’s absolutely nothing to have fun with in the GW2 level-up (and learning procerss). You can hardly even find groups for your own-level content that people don’t want to kick you out of. And I lost two people I tried to bring into the game because, by the time they hit 80, and (one of them) ground out their Ascended armor, they had a view of the game that it was totally lame and mechanistic.

I also made the observation that it’s very hard for a new player to find solid info on really fundamental stuff about this game. I only figured out a month ago how fields and finishers interacted with each other. I played three MMO’s before this, and they had infinitely better documentation online. In a lot of ways, you really just need to grit your teeth and want to get over the hump. Because you’re jumping into an environment (thanks to level 80 boosts) where everybody is doing something else and nobody is doing what you’re trying to do. Then, when you hit 80, you’re joining groups where everybody already knows the mechanics of the content and wants to insta-kick anyone who doesn’t.

I lost two RL friends from this game because they also couldn’t stand the stupid, tedious level-up. That’s why, anymore, I just tell people to buy HoT and use the level 80 boost. The game doesn’t actually start until you hit level 80. It’s so bad that people will kick you from Ascalonian Catacombs for being less than 80. But it’s a level 35 dungeon!!

My personal experience was that this game had an EXTREMELY unfriendly new-player experience. I’ve never played an MMO before where it was so hard to find basic information about things. I finally found most of my answers, and made my characters very strong and well equipped. But I have a really autistic sort of persistence that a lot of people don’t. So, yea… I hear you. I tried to introduce two people to this game. and they both called it quit after a few weeks.

I just got kicked from a fractal group for a reason that seems baffling to me. It was a pickup group doing the swampland fractal. And we were on the part where we had to return the three wisps to the clefts in the beginning. We tried and failed this part four times in a row. But I got a wisp back to the clefts on every attempt (actually starting from the clefts)… while the other four people couldn’t manage, between the four of them, to swing the other two. Then, all of a sudden, bang, bang bang… three votes to kick, and I’m standing in Lion’s arch.

I was literally like wtf?? So I sent the initiator a message asking for an explanation, and he told me that I was supposed to wait for everyone to say they’re ready before grabbing a wisp. If I’m wrong here, please let me know. But is this actually a thing?? Not only was most of the group in the top half of the mini-map on each attempt. But 30 seconds is enough time to get a wisp and bring it back from ANY starting location if you actually know the routes.

I’ve never heard of this before. And I’ve rarely been in a group that didn’t just get it done within two attempts. So please settle this for me. Was I being an idiot to just go grab wisps and bring them back? Because that’s the only way I’ve ever seen it done up to this point.

Believe me, I am not someone who cares about meters. I just don’t think the past was any better.

I’ve been around since the very beginning, I’ve seen how things were then and now… and from what I see, atleast on my server, things have gotten much worse. I was even around for day 1 of GW1.

How did you measure how bad things were in GW1? In GW2 at launch? In the original Fractals? In current fractals? For how many hours a day did you look at LFGs or count people who entered and reappeared (suggesting that they might have been kicked)?

We humans are mighty good at finding facts that support our beliefs. It takes a lot of effort to collect actual data and interpret it without bias.

How does that not apply equally to you and the OP? Please… share your spreadsheets with us.

To be fair, the post this person replied to stated that they soloed “every aspect of HoT” in full glass. Of course we know that’s an exaggeration. What they likely meant is exactly what you’re saying: The player personally feels comfortable running around the jungle in full glass, rather than being literally able to solo every single event and boss in HoT.

Yea, what I meant (of course) is that I did the whole story and all the map completion solo… because I assumed that had to be what he was complaining about. Or was he actually complaining that he couldn’t do zone meta-events solo?? In that case, it’s an extra ridiculous criticism of the expansion.

With the new expansion, will Anet avoid HoT?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fallesafe.5932

Fallesafe.5932

I was wondering after the HoT aftermath and the damage it did to the game and player population, will Anet have the strength to forget HoT and move on?

What went wrong with HoT, IMHO, and should never be repeated:

01. Pricing the expansion as the full game for players already owning the original game
02. DLC worth of new content, not worthy of expansion name
03. Rushed and short story mode, with a really underwhelming final battle design.
04. Questionable map design, not the beauty of HoT maps, just usability. Minimap system is not enough for HoT layout.
05. Lack of new character slot for the new profession (remedied after an outcry from players).
06. Killing the casualness of the original Guild Wars 2 in more than one way and thus making maps either extremely hard or right down impossible for solo completion.
07. Nerfing the older content, all in hope player base will be forced to buy into deeply flawed new one.
08. Essentially killing off PvP with tying it to the expansion.
09. Nearly destroying WvW which survival is still up in the air.
10. etc.

I don’t really understand some of your points at all.

1) It’s ~$25. Wtf are you talking about? That’s about as much as a pizza and coke.
2) It’s plenty of content. The mastery points were so awesome. And I had fun, not only w/ the main story, but with the zone-metas and elite skills for literally months.

6) Are you kidding me? I soloed every aspect of HoT on multiple, full-glass characters. And I’m not even very good. This is a learn-to-play issue.

I could see you point if it was $300. But it’s like $25. You have no case. Where else could you possibly get so much bang for so little money?

Which infinite mist potion to get first?

in Thief

Posted by: Fallesafe.5932

Fallesafe.5932

OP here,

I wanted to follow up on this post now that I actually have all 3 potions. If you have a regular group of skilled people to play with, then the offensive potion would be a no-brainer. But if you do pickup groups, then survivability trumps max-DPS a hundred times over.

I find myself in the second category (working my way through the fractals with pickup groups). And the damage is already a given without any potions. I always outdamage everyone I’m grouped with. Sometimes I outdamage the whole rest of the group combined. But, so often the support from the other players isn’t there to keep me alive.

So I run all three potions with invigorating precision. And I miss out on low endurance boost and the fury bonus. But I still outdamaged the heck out of everyone anyway. And if I had to pick one potion first (for somebody in my situation… who doesn’t play with a good, regular group), it would probably be defense or mobility. Because DPS makes no difference if you die halfway through the fight and can’t be rezzed.

There is a very simple reason why people hate meters. It hurts to have a bad feeling about your own underperformance being proven to you by accurate numbers and statistics.

This… 100% this.

I LOVE damage meters because they blow away all the smoke on how you’re performing, and how your groups are performing. And I can’t see why that’s a bad thing. I remember the first time (as a thief) that I got outdamaged by a dragonhunter. And it made me go back to the drawing board and nail down my rotation so it wouldn’t happen again. I’ve also been in many groups where I’m literally doing more DPS than the 4 people below me, combined (that’s my cue to leave the group after we’re finished).

If you’re playing a bearbow ranger (for example), then you’re a waste of a slot. And everybody knows it just by seeing the bear and the longbow. But there are many “invisible,” bearbow equivalents that also need to be excluded. DPS meters make that possible. If you can’t be bothered to make a minimal investment in usefulness, then good riddance.

And I’m not talking about being snobbishly “meta” down to the last detail. I’m just saying that some people suck so bad that groups deserve to know it.

I think the person you quoted was less on about why you play games (or why rewards may or may not be desirable), but why you play this MMORPG.

Well… because it suits me very well, and I think it’s an awesome game. I’m not trying to salvage a game that I think is broken. I’m trying to suggest a way to make a great game even better. And it doesn’t have to be through ANY sort of an item treadmill at all. The suggestion I made in the last post was to have stats that can only go so high (and never higher). But place a tiny portion of those stats in T4 fractals and the first raid wing.

You still have your ETERNAL stat-ceiling. But you also have a small incentive to push yourself through content that requires a lot of effort. So, the example I gave was that, if the highest you can get your unbuffed power was 3027… put gear accounting for 25 points of that total in T4 fractals, and gear accounting for 25 points of that total in the first raid wing.

And, if somebody chose not to do either, they’d still be practically identical to someone who did (and capable of all the same encounters). Then, if an expansion comes out, the stat-ceiling is STILL 3027. But 25 points worth of it is found in some of the new content as well (i.e. more options to do the same thing). Hardly a “gear treadmill.”

For pete’s sake, now the post is below this one. Geez, silly forum.

Sorry, I double-posted and had to delete/repost.

So in other words, you’re asking for the game to be changed from a cosmetic based game to a gear grind game because you need an extra incentive to play with “temperamental people who are more skilled than you”?

Nooooo. Not a good reason to change one of the few non geargrind games to yet one more treadmill game. May I suggest you find a guild with members you enjoy playing with instead of revamping the game to suit your individual wishes?

Edit: that’s actually a very interesting thing you’ve said OP

(Snip)
So I’m just looking at this stomach-churning grind through the content, with temperamental people who are way more skilled/experienced than me and with no actual rewards coming my way. And there’s a part of me that just says, why bother? But then, there’s nothing else in the game. I can’t stand to do another Tequatl kill or Dragon’s stand meta. I’m bored to death of open-world content.

You don’t like the game’s reward structure
You don’t like the people you’ll be playing with
You don’t like the content you’ll be playing

Perhaps you can explain to us why exactly you’re playing this game and not one that suits you better.

Fair enough questions. I do find that reaching new levels in the content is extremely rewarding (best part of the game so far actually). But that enjoyment is tempered by the fact that:

1) It can also be miserable and stressful.
2) There’s literally nothing else that I’ll ever get for my character that I want from it.

And I think there’s a bit of a false dilemma where “gear-treadmills” are concerned. The thinking seems to be that you either let everything be obtainable through PUG silverwaste farms… or you resign yourself to the cruel “tricks” of a greedy company that wants you to sign your life away to have any fun in their game. But there’s absolutely a middle ground.

If (for example), it’s possible to get a maximum of 3025 unbuffed power though equipment and consumables, how about putting 25 points of that gear in T4 fractals, and 25 points of it in the first raid wing? You still have the same maximum of 3025. All you’ve done is incentivized people to work though two massive components of the game to get it. And if somebody chose not to do it, they’d be hardly any worse off for the decision.

It’s not unreasonable to want something satisfying for the effort you put in. If jumping puzzles were your thing, how do you think it would effect puzzle-jumping to see a fireworks animation at the end (and that’s it)? How many people do you think would keep doing the jumping puzzles?

OP here,

I think my post needs a little more explanation. So here’s where I’m coming from. I geared my character up because I wanted to eventually do ambitious content, and be able to really contribute to the effort. I didn’t want to be “that person” who was playing a DPS class, and doing less damage than non-dps characters. So I spent a good bit of time addressing that first obstacle in my way.

But, of course, there’s SOOOO much more to it than just gearing up your character. After you have all your gear, then you need to jump into the content and actually learn the intricacies of each encounter (i.e. learn to play). That’s pretty much where I am right now. And I’m finding that, a lot of times, I’m very hesitant to really push out of my comfort-zone, because people are terribly impatient with group-members who do dumb things or don’t know all the things that they know.

And I just wish there was something left in the game to incentivize the process. But there isn’t. I don’t care about skins and auras because I’ve already (painstakingly) chosen a great look that I have no desire to change. I don’t care about miniatures, or guild-decorations, or achievement-points, because they’re utterly irrelevant to what I want to do in the game. I don’t care about mastery points because I already have all the ones that will ever matter. And I don’t care about legendaries because they’re functionally identical to their ascended counterparts.

So,you’re saying you want a continuous gear treadmill? Because eventually you’re going to hit max stats without one if you play long enough and you’ll be right where you are right now.

It depends on your definition of a “gear treadmill.” I think that:

1) There should absolutely be some concrete incentive to do fractals and raids.
2) Every new expansion should introduce gear that’s at least a little better than what was previously available.
3) “Legendary” weapons and armor should offer more than a drop-down box for stat combos… and a trail of glitter on the ground.

I started this game about five months ago, and decided that I wanted to play some of the higher level content. So I got all of my ascended armor and weapons and trinkets (even the underwater stuff), and filled them with the best infusions and upgrade components. It would be impossible for me to find any item for any slot that would constitute any sort of improvement over what I have. But now I’m finding myself seriously unmotivated to play, because there’s no point.

I find it crazy that, even if I worked up to fractal scale 100, and completed every raid, I wouldn’t get a single item that improved any of my stats. And when I watch some of the top guilds on YouTube, I see that they’re busy doing moron things like killing the same boss for the 200th time with five guys instead of ten… or running a stopwatch to see if they can finish the content a few seconds faster than before (i.e. boredom).

I get that this game is geared towards casual players. And I LOVE that because I work 75 hours/week, and don’t have tons of time. But I think ANet has made it too easy to hit a dead-end, and that some of your character’s potential should only be reachable by completing high level content. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of this game. But save me something to work for! You shouldn’t be able to max out your potential in the open world.

Unlock all the waypoints in Verdant Brink.
Unlock all the waypoints in Auric Basin (the zone to the southwest)
Unlock all the waypoints in Tangled Depths (the zone South of AB).

Then open your LFG panel (y), and look for a HP group in all three zones. You’ll have daredevil maxed in a day.

I’m getting close to a level of fractal relics where I’ll have to make a choice between the infinite mist offensive or defensive potion. And I could really use some advice. The consensus among players of almost every class is that offense is the way to go. But, if I didn’t know that, I would take the defensive potion without thinking twice. Nothing drives me more insane than getting virtually insta-killed by anything that aggros me for more than 1.5 seconds (which happens a LOT).

I have some big learn-to-play issues. I’m fairly new to the game (less than 6 months). And I’ve spent 95% of my time, so far, gearing up. But, now that the gear-grind is over, and I’m starting to face the actual content, I find that I’m dying like crazy. And I’m kinda torn between which of these two fractal potions to get first.

My build is berserker/staff, and my gear is full berserker. Thanks for any advice you can give!

Fractals vs. LW3 for ascended trinkets?

Fallesafe.5932

Hi,

I just finished my ascended armor and weapons, and need to start working on my ascended trinkets (viper’s). From what I’ve read, the best ways to get these are by doing fractals, and by completing the LW3 maps. But is either one of these two methods substantially quicker or easier than the other?

I really just want to finish my gear so I can finally focus on the content (and eventually learn to raid). Thx!

Hey, I wanted to thank everyone for their great suggestions! By the way… my answer was to farm chests in Silverwastes. The three crafting materials that I needed (obsidian shards, dragonite ore, and empyreal fragments) dropped so fast there that I had enough to complete my full armor set in two days.

For anybody in my same predicament, just go into the LFG panel and join those 30+ player central Tyria squads in the Silverwastes (as one possible solution).

You’re going to need absolutely enormous amounts of iron, platinum, mithril, and soft, seasoned, hard, and elder wood. The sheer volume is a bigger barrier than the account-bound salvage materials, IMO.

I’m assuming that you mean I’ll need all of those materials to get my skills up. But I’ve already maxed my skills (they’re all at 500). All I need at this point is the ascended materials. And the only thing that seems to be coming easy is bloodstone dust. Is there any zone or instance that’s especially good for farming ascended materials?

About a week ago, I got the bright idea (without doing any research), that I would take my leatherworking, Hunstsman, and weaponsmith skills to 500 to craft full ascended gear. So I bought an extra crafting lisence and maxed all three skills. Then I bought all the materials from the trading post that I’d need to craft my viper’s (Yassith’s) armor and weapons. I also farmed all the Aurillium that I needed to buy my Yassith’s insignia and inscription recipes from AB.

But, when I tried to figure out where I could get the ascended materials to craft my insignias/inscriptions (plus vision crystals), it hit me like a bucket of ice-water that everything I’ve done was just the easy part. Now, I’m really deflated by the prospect of gathering all this crap — because I have no idea where to go to get it.

This is my question: Where do I need to go to farm all the ascended crafting materials that I’ll need to make these weapons/armor? I’m willing to do all the boring, mind-numbing work. I just have no idea where to go. And I’ve found it very difficult to get any good information about it online. What does the grind look like for ascended crafting mats? Specifically, where do I go! Thanks:)

How to avoid crazy aggro as A/T SB Condition?

How to avoid crazy aggro as A/T SB Condition?

in Ranger

Posted by: Fallesafe.5932

Fallesafe.5932

Hi,

I’m fairly new to the game. And I need some advice on how to play my character better. I’m specced for A/T SB condition damage. And the issue I keep running into is that, in order to drop my big AOE damage abilities, I have to get into meele range and then get out. 70% of the time, that works fine. But if I draw aggro from one or two mobs, I get absolutely rekt in a matter of seconds. And I find it really embarrassing (in groups) to die over and over, and make people waste their time rezzing me again and agian. How can I better avoid this?

My second question is… what kind of rotations do people use to maximize their DPS on this build? The page on metabattle lists a rotation of like 20 items. Do people really use such elaborate rotations?? What I normally do is:

1) F2 with lynx (to let him take aggro)
2) Sharpening stone
3) Throw torch
4) Splitblade
5) Spam ricochet

Run into meele range

6) Bonfire
7) Flame Trap
8) Viper’s nest
9) Entangle
10) Roll back out of meele range and start over when timers refresh

I never even use my short bow, because I’m not sure how to work it in. And I know that’s costing me dps, since my spec rewards me for swapping weapons with bleeding damage.

What is the trick to really playing this class/spec well?? The damage I can do (even with my terrible rotation) is awesome. And I really enjoy the build. But, man I really suck… And I’d like to play better. Thanks.
