Is Pressing Dodge & 1 Better Than a Trinity?

I view this issue as a conflict between two groups.

One group wants to play a lot. They want goals to chase — in other words, they desire things to work towards while playing a lot. They’re not happy unless they can feel they’ve gained something, even if it’s only an achievement point. This crowd always wants something more to do. They want to be on the top of the list because that’s their “reward” for their “dedication.”

The second group wants to “accomplish” everything the game puts in front of them. However, they don’t like having to take a lot of time to do so. They begrudge the thought of stepping away from any possible gain, even if it’s only one achievement point. This crowd wants less to do.

The second crowd is trying to compete with the first, but wants the game to offer less choice of things to pursue, so they can keep up with the point “race” without having to keep up in time spent.

Both crowds cannot be accommodated — no more than the we-want-stat-inflation crowd and the we-don’t-want-stat-inflation crowd can be.

Current state of the game

I haven’t been back in a while thought i’d poke around to check out the state of the game in case I want to come back (More of a PVE player).

Between the Polygon article and 2x state of the game videos by GW2Guru it seems like developement has been PVP focused?

I know temporary events have graced the skies of the PVE world, but that wouldn’t help much to a returning player. Beyond that sifting through posts between fan boys and hate mail dungeons really don’t look like they’re in a better place and nothing new has been added. A core group of players are still kitten over gear progression so the future for PVE GW2 seems bleak.

I have seen a theme though, the people that complain about gear progression seem to have this sort of entitlement claim and I saw this in wow as well when I was still playing 6 months ago where people don’t want to do the content, but feel “forced” to do it to get the “rewards” a very interesting concept.

Why do raids seem unattractive to people?

Raid is a dirty word in the GW2 forums. People still cling to Arenanets original manifesto. lesson learned.

As for raids if done well (by the developer), can be really fun.

Now everyone back to your dungeon speed runs for gold. chop chop!

In my view, Dungeons are not fun and not rewarding

There are some valid points with OP.

tbh, GW2 is stellar for exploring, pvp, and non broken events. As for dungeons, they missed the mark and the people that enjoy vs not like will continue.

To people that are tired of these threads, don’t worry, as more people quit you’ll get less of these threads. Same thing happened on diablo 3 forums. Complaints don’t just stop, people just stop playing the game.

Different strokes for different folks. Personally I like playing male characters – generally larger, looks stronger, more fierce. I have a Norn Warrior and end up running dungeons while having all these little ladies running around. :P

I think server populations should still fluctuate. If you keep checking during off peak hours you might find the population go down from full allowing you to transfer.

If you don’t know what those off peak hours are, just do spot checks throughout the day/night.

Dungeons way overpowered.

In a really good group, they aren’t too bad (some* are even partially fun). In a mediocre pug and/or new players it is fully sadistic.

It feels their dungeons are designed in an attempt to make you feel “anguish” then relief with a focus on getting people downed with the expectations of party members resurrecting you. Giving everyone a heal ability that heals 1/3 your life as you wait for a cooldown helps this.

Some things to help:
-watch vids on the fight to understand them
-try to get a good group makeup of classes (although when you’re pugging it, sometimes you take what you can get)
-if you die a lot, spec a little more defence and change your attack style and possibly add some more utility that will save the life of you and your party over damage utility abilities.

Over and above these things, there’s spot where good strategy wins, and other spots that are a test of your pain levels. Most of the time this doesn’t involve a boss.

Or they could just improve the dungeons themselves. Handing people misc rewards won’t make them want to go through a pain sessions of certain paths.

One problem.15 bombers were waiting for the group. possibly more as we tried to bypass them but it wasn’t happening the distance to cover was too long and there was mobs all along the path.

Ouch. That doesn’t make a lot of sense. How far away the mob’s stopping point is away from the waypoint? is there no way to proceed without aggroing them? and how many more of them are on the way?

When we were spawning at the WP there was 4-5 bombers very close, then as you start walking on the platform a group of about 10 bombers, then the long path must have had 20-30 spread over the long stretch (after killing second champion). It seems if you don’t one shot the golems you’re SOL. Once they’re down it should clear the bombers for death run backs.

Fix path 1 Arah. Lupicus requiring the group to one shot the boss or you’re SOL. Good luck with resing anyone during the fight. and the WP is farther from Lupicus than in other paths. Don’t even bother running back.

Is this really what you wanted from an MMO?

Gurubu.1693

People like to take the high road and say “I don’t care about gear progression” and I laugh.

A good MMO with good PVE endgame has GOOD raids/dungeons that not only DROP upgrades per boss killed, but also reward you with tokens to upgrade even more gear. It’s a marriage between gear and progression that lets your character grow in strength as you progress through the content.

In Guild Wars 2 doesn’t matter what battles you’ve been in, or what evil monster you destroyed – you can still be chain stun’d by risen farmers with shovels.

GW2 is great, good concept, good play, but with punishing dungeons that really aren’t that fun and where you have aggro bouncing all over the place. People will naturally want to play tanks – therefore let them and stop the ping pong machine of an aggro mechanic. They might have pulled it off if dungeons were fun and challenging but overall they’re feh.

People skip mobs for a reason. Never seen as much skipping of dungeon content in any other MMO than GW.

I had a feeling path 1 was changed. We did the kite one bomber while people cleared the platform and made it to the three golems. When all 3 golems pulled and the group ended up wiping we spawned back at the initial wp.

One problem.15 bombers were waiting for the group. possibly more as we tried to bypass them but it wasn’t happening the distance to cover was too long and there was mobs all along the path.

Arenanet’s dungeon dev’s have a degree in BDSM. Hence their dungeons.

I’ll most likely stick around to see how it plays out. If there is an instanced halloween mission lets hope it’s decent.

Has anyone encountered strange doors through the lands? There was mention for it in Act 1. just wondering what that initiates when you break it down.

Trash the fluff

Gurubu.1693

IMO as far as what’s been released really is just fluff. I think their time would have been better spent building an instanced area (Halloween based) with an access portal in Lion’s arch. Possibly a small haunted castle you could clear with groups of 5 players with a champion/boss fight at the end with some small possibility of a Halloween related loot.

The instanced area could even be something that would re-appear every Halloween so it could be re-usable content and you would just have to update it year on year.

Although there is more to be released in the Halloween event but we’ll see how it goes. Had another friend quit GW after realizing the event was more bs than something of interest.

Anyone else tired of being snared...

I highly recommend the +200 toughness when you’re snared (trait). A warrior must have :P

I personally use the heal ability with condition removers, as well as shake it off (shout) with traits that reduce shouts CD by 20%. The cooldown reduction is also nice when using “For great justice”, you essentially get 10 seconds of fury every 20 seconds.

When I have my guy gear’d out (level 80), hundred blades usually finishes off with numbers like 8k/10k/12k i’ve even had it as high as 10/14/18k on the final three slashes (pending boons). Try making that up on auto attack.

I also use the trait for might gain per crit on greatsword.

auto attacks range from 800-1200

Arah - why?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Gurubu.1693

There is alot of people that run pugs and they utlimately get the short end of the stick in Arah. Ran path 1 (Jotun) and it was definitely a pain session. I saw a video on how to fight Lupicus in a pug group which involved kiting him closer to the WP so when you died you’d be closer to him.

Even people that have downed certain bosses and post Arah videos usually show people dying at one point during a long fight and running back.

The best solution is to keep the difficulty as is but increase people’s survivability. Do things like:

-add a third dodge
-reduce the CD on a personal heal ability and allow it to heal to full

Points that don’t require you to have the most precisely landed dodge, or standing back and avoiding while you wait for your heal ability to finish CD. Increase people’s survivability but don’t allow them to come back to the boss during the fight. Thus allowing you to put more WPs and prevent people from running back from death. Better combat overall, less death walks.

If you want the top % of players running these dungeons regularly, and have a group of level 80 pve’rs bored out of their gored and quit so be it. They’re all pain sessions. Give people the ability to avoid things more often.

There’s a reason everyone skips mobs any chance they get and not for speed.

Dungeons are more of a chore than anything else, combat isn’t that dynamic, and the rewards really do suck.

It’s the difference between the people that have AAA groups with decked out party members using voice claiming bosses are easy vs people who group up with whoever is around.

What were people thinking making a pug party to run a dungeon. Crazy talk I tell you. What were people thinking expecting to run a dungeon in a game without researching it? It’s all crazy talk I tell you.

What happened to all the talk that GW2 isn’t about Raids? Their dungeons seem to be rated at that difficulty level.

If you want 10% of the people to regularly run dungeons so be it. The stuff that drops from dungeons are generally junk anyways and it’s more of a time sink than anything else. Sure the exotics from tokens are great and all, but not much better than karma rewards and you’ll make more money and enjoy your time more through events than dungeons.

Thanks for the links OP and knowing a dungeon definitely impacts the success of your group. But aside from that, the game could really use either a third dodge bar, and/or a slightly lower cooldown on healing abilities. Certain scenario’s requires you to have amazing precision on your dodge usage, and if you use it up you SOL.

There’s definitely a lot of specific situations where you’re telling yourself wtf? Pulls involving 5 elites where aggro bounces around the group. It can be done effectively in an organized group over chat but when you’re talking pugs, and possibly not the best group makeup for the dungeon I still think it’s a little hardcore at times.

The only reason I run dungeons is for completions and possibly pickup a cool looking set. Already took care of my gear set from events/karma and it feels less like a dentist appointment.

0 combo fields. minimal healing. some condition removers. Add to that melee are relegated to ranged weapons ALOT and that’s not their bread and butter. Try running a condition heavy dungeon with 5 warriors.

I’ve always liked Warrior/Guardian/Necro/Mesmer/Elementalist

Story mode = pain and anguish

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Gurubu.1693

Gurubu.1693

Lets be realistic here people. All the hardcore people that agree “Story Mode” should melt their face difficulty wise have been smelling too much of the fumes out of an exhaust pipe.

To me, what I would think a good definition of “Story Mode” would be new people coming together in a pug group/friends group, never running the dungeon before and wanting to check out the story. If this is the case/group prepare for pain and anguish with deaths and dying/running back/dying running back. Even successful dungeon groups i’ve had involved deaths and people running back while the boss fight/trash mobs were still active.

Keep the difficulty in EXPLORE mode, and scale back the difficulty on Story Mode for people who just wanna do that – check out the story and see the dungeon. CM for the most part is fine, but AC, TA, and SE (the ones i’ve done so far) really do require not only a diverse group of classes, but people using combo’s and hitting on all cylinders. Wouldn’t you want people to go through the story, see the dungeon and how it functions, then melt their faces in Explore mode. Hell all these hardcore people should be given an option in Explore mode to be dropped into a pit with 30 bosses and have their faces melted to their hearts content.
