Too bad this game isn’t about 1v1ing or dueling people all day.
This isn’t a game designed around dueling or 1v1, it’s just for fun.
Stomp their face and gloat obnoxiously. If they are whining, increase your boisterous celebration ten times over.
Just on mobility, it’s the difference between life and death. Whoever has the most of it is in control of every engagement.
How does he never get rooted in that second video? If one person rooted him at any point, he was dead.
Being a Mesmer is nothing short of frustrating.
There are times you can do well, but most of the time you feel as if you’re handicapped compared to the rest of the professions. Everyone seems to do the things you do, but better (aside from veil and portals).
I’ve rerolled at this point. I still play my Mesmer from time to time. It’s a fun class, and it seems like everyone likes to play it differently. The Mesmer seems to be unique because every thread I read, ever person I read talking about how they play the Mesmer – always seems to be different. Sure there are the PU / shatter meta builds, but I made my own phantasm build the other day that is actually working out really well for me.
At launch, the class felt OK. It was strange. The weapon choices, the abilities and utility skills all seemed mismatched. There was never a specific theme going on. It was peculiar, to a veteran MMO player.
I mean, we have these illusions. We have tons of abilities to pump illusions out – but yet our class function is to blow them up for different effects. We have scattered condi damage, but it’s not without a plethora of direct damage or crit traits sprinkled throughout every build. Our traits seem like a mess to me, and our end traits are just awful with the exception of one or two. In the beginning, I just remember being very confused at what exactly I was suppose to be doing, or even what my options were.
Everything just felt, random.
At this point though, Mesmers don’t feel much different. I can’t tell you how many builds I see people come up with, as they go through each trait and what they do to contribute to the build – when suddenly they always have to admit that one or two traits just do absolutely nothing for the entire theme of the build. And these are for META builds.
Mesmers have a serious fundamental design flaw, and it really will never get fixed. We’re either always going to be dead weight, or ridiculously overpowered. The entire class needs a TOTAL rework and redesign, starting with our trait options. Illusions need to work differently – and they SERIOUSLY need to fix the fact that KEY abilities bug out 60% of the time or just DON’T WORK even in the theory of them.
Minion master isn’t an esports build, and is frowned up generally. Therefore, Anet does not give a total kitten.
It’s not that some classes are meant to have mobility while others aren’t.
Mesmers have zero mobility.
If we want mobility, we sacrifice an element of our base damage or utility. And you learn quick that in order to do any damage as a mesmer, you have to go full blown while using all of your utility skills for escapes. All of which ele/thiefs do 100% better.
Our only option is to buy runes, which is a sorry excuse. So now Mesmers are forced to purchase specific runes? Gimps our damage even more.
Also, I don’t buy into the whole, “Well your class can’t be good at everything !” Uh, it can at least be viable to some capacity. You’re reinforcing a meta, and expecting a meta. The job of a balancing team is to try to switch that meta up when the meta begins to absolutely dominate every player’s decision (because it implies imbalance) – thus very few (and bored) Mesmers.
Look, I know Mesmers can be very effective duelists, but the cost/difficulty does not weigh equal with the reward. Where Mesmers have to time and predict very precise movements with absolutely no other interruptions (like a teammate running in at the last second) – an ele or thief is not effected in the same manner. And it has a lot to do with the basic fundamental way the key function of a Mesmer works. Illusions have always been horribly undependable. Many of our key abilities are immensely buggy still, (just remove the whole illusion thing from our sword leap, I’M BEGGING YOU) and our trait lines and weapon abilities have always seemed completely random aside from a couple of exceptions.
I mean, boons for shattering in the Chaos line? Everywhere I look, the Chaos line is typically about NOT shattering your illusions.
I could go on, but even looking at a classes like the Necro – the trees make so much more sense, with traits that seem to actually build on one another – rather than just random conflicting themes spread among the final trait lines.
I’m experiencing this same frustration after returning. When I played last, I actually could hold my own in sPvP, and felt pretty useless in WvW. At least I had sPvP to be proud of.
As of lately though, I’m getting seriously sick of the thief/ele dominance, mostly because I feel like they’re doing every role of the mesmer, but just 10x better.
Warriors/Guardians, sure, they’re annoying – but at least I can kill them sometimes and they aren’t always doing absurd amounts of damage.
Mesmers were a mess when the game came out. People can sit around and tout that Mesmer requires some hidden ancient knowledge and talent, but in reality – just looking at our abilities in comparison to some of the other classes is just a joke. Things that are basic and easy for one class, is a chore for the Mesmer and requires us to do very inconvenient or counter-intuitive to a specific build. One example, there’s no reason for Bountiful Disillusionment to be in our Chaos tree, which usually comprises of NON-shatter builds typically. And our reward for this supposed “high skill ceiling?” Being mediocre in comparison to ele/thief.
As for the other classes, I don’t notice Necro much – and rangers are relatively easy for me. Engineers can be a pain I guess, but if you just walk away from their turrets you’re usually OK.
Competitive should be the indicator of the serious problems with class balance in this game though. It’s getting ridiculously frustrating to continue playing the Mesmer.
Edit: Lets not forget that one of the key abilities on one of the Mesmer’s highest DPS output weapon works about 60% of the time.
I’ve been having problems solving speed issues in WvW as well.
In basically anything but WvW, the Mesmer really does shine and is a real joy to play. But whenever I’m in WvW, I feel like I have anchors attached to my feet. Celerity doesn’t seem that great though to me, it requires illusions to be out? – and the whole class mechanic is that we shatter our illusions?
There’s a lot of things about mesmer that seems counter-intuitive or illogical.
I’ve done a lot of experimenting with the Mesmer weapons and I’m still immensely perplexed at all of these people on the forums talking about a sword/pistol Mesmer. I rarely actually see them in the game, in action, and whenever I try it myself I just don’t see it working that well. Mesmers take far too much damage. The 2 ability, while makes you invulnerable, makes you stand still doing nothing sometimes – time that could be spent making more illusions and moving around. The leap illusion barely works half the time for me. I use it, and no illusion even appears.
Hands down though, the staff is the best Mesmer weapon. I use the staff with a scepter/pistol combo. I can constantly keep range, constantly keep illusions up for shattering, and I just spam the hell out of Pistol bleeds and confusion with F1 and F2 along with the scepters 3. Scepter also gives you a block if you’re forced into melee range with someone – giving you an additional illusion. The standard scepter attack also gives you illusions.
I just don’t see why you’d ever want to be in melee with a Mesmer.
“I was expecting a plethora of repeatable scripted weekittenreadmill activities after I maxed out in a week.”
Go away. Also, WoW came out 8 years ago. WoW had zero endgame content when it was released. Far less than what GW2 has right now.
The Mesmer is an EZ mode profession?
Anyone who believes this is severely ignorant and hasn’t actually tried the Mesmer out yet. They’re much more complicated than you may believe. I’ve tried out other classes, and even from the low levels, the Mesmer is a much more difficult profession to completely grasp. People are just finally learning how to play their Mesmers now, and we’re finding out that we’re pretty much only good in 1v1 situations. Anything else and we fall flat.
I just started using Staff with Scepter and Pistol for everything.
How anyone can use a 1h sword as a mesmer in pvp confuses me. The clone ability for it never works.
A quality of life buff for Shatter (ignoring the other obvious problems).

This means that you DO NOT have to wait for them to finish the shatter animation and the purple orbs empty before you summoning more illusions. The orbs are merely a visual thing and do not accurately represent your actual illusion pop cap where shatters are concerned.
Yea. That’s false.
clicked on Mesmer WvWvW. Nothing was found.
That was stupid of me.
You realize the BBB gives good ratings to who pay them correct?
Consequently they take notice when you chargeback a company that is paying them.
They’re targeting emails. Compromised accounts aren’t just now popping up. They’ve existed since before the game came out, when the associated emails use to be actively used for a World of Warcraft account.

You need to run malwarebytes and scan your computer for anything too. Change your passwords to both your GW2 account and email when you get the chance.
Be more aware of your account status and email. I was recently getting login attempts from multiple locations earlier this week and had to change my login information. It stopped the email notifications at least.
Run malwarebytes, scan for viruses, maybe even reformat. It’s most likely because you have nasty third party programs running that you are completely unaware of. You’d be amazed how they’re getting these things on our computers these days.
You could also be lying. Which cheaters love to do on forums to gain meaningless sympathy and vent unnecessary anger.
If anything in this thread is true, well I hope Anet notices false positives and fixes this issue. Certainly sucks..
