To be honest, I felt every single step of this installment of the Living Story was badly written. On every level it felt like a failure to make what was supposedly going on match what was actually going on.
The tasks we had to fulfill to get the leaders to attend the summit felt like contrivances. They could have been completed by anyone. Take the crown (a very important item that we’ve never heard of until just now), for example. It could have been retrieved by any of the warbands stationed in the Black Citadel. But we’re supposed to believe it’s such a monumental undertaking that only we can handle it. The fragments were literally lying in piles of rubble. Rytlock could have easily retrieved these items. Hell, the custodian that cleans his office could have retrieved them.
Then, as you said, the character relationships felt like cop outs. Braham goes from “I don’t want anything to do with my mother” to “my mom is the COOLEST!” after one fight. Whitebeard goes from “we can’t help you because we have to an Elder Dragon to contend with” to “we’ll help you with your problems because you killed a handful of Elder Dragon minions for us” after we do what any notable norn could have handled.
The process of swaying these leaders to attend the summit, if they didn’t want to, should have had entire installments dedicated to them. Convincing Whitebeard to get on board should have been an it’s own release. By cramming them all into one release, all of them felt flat. There was no organic growth with any of the characters involved. Things went from “no” to “yes” with the flip of a switch. That’s not good writing.
I agree with some of what you’re saying, specifically regarding the stuff about Ascalon and the charr, which seemed like important enough plot points that they could have been the centre of an entire update with the pieces hidden behind some large new event chains, instead of what felt like a short sidequest (that are usually already completed when you get there).
But I don’t really feel like we missed anything by not being alongside Braham and Eir. They would have just been in the back of the fight, maybe with a few lines. It’s arguable that it’s too soon for this “reconciliation”, but I don’t think it was a cop out to not directly see them fighting together. Like others have said, it was more just about Braham realising the things people say about his mother were true and coming to understand that she left to do something really important – something he’s having to do himself now.
Also, Whitebeard never agreed to help us fight Mordremoth. We dealt with some of the immediate problems the norn were facing so he agreed to come and LISTEN to what we have to say, nothing more. Obviously something’s probably going to happen at the summit to convince everyone that Mordremoth is the threat that needs immediate attention.
Giving skimpy armour to people who want skimpy armour is fine, but this one is just really distasteful. Why is there such a large difference between the male and female sets? I was very excited to actually get this set for my character, only to discover that females can’t wear the set you guys showed in the pictures and instead we get something with breast windows, heels and garter belts that looks straight out of a Korean MMO.
Please make this an alternate set.
Me and a friend have been attempting to play through Super Adventure Box together and have been doing so just fine until today, when we now seem to be unable to enter the same instance. The box pops up inviting the other player to join, but nothing happens when when you click OK, it just closes itself and trying to enter into the world hubs takes us to separate instances, making it impossible to play together.
We’ve tried leaving the area, logging off, disbanding the party, etc, and nothing seems to be fixing this.
Seems like the whiners finally got what they wanted.
Instead of putting in some effort, you can just craft them.Whining on forums really pays off in this game.
What “effort”? Grinding for money so you can buy something at a ridiculously inflated prices?
The crafting/scavenger hunt for precursors has been talked about since just after the game launched and was always intended as a means to get one by actually putting in effort and playing the game. Not by the sheer dumb luck it currently involves.
Will SAB actually stay in the game this time?

This is one instance where I actually think the temporary content works. The novelty would get old pretty fast if things like the Super Adventure Box stayed around permanently and the community would quickly lose interest. Bringing it back every few months with some new levels and new rewards is a good way to keep it exciting, without overstaying its welcome.
You can make a couple of gold an hour. Significantly more if you get lucky with drops (and those are skins that will quickly drop in value), but some people are seriously overestimating/exaggerating how much you can make.
Most of the money people are making will be going straight to precursors. That may cause a short term inflation of their prices, but won’t matter once we get the new crafting levels.
I never understood the Trahearne 2.0 stuff. He was annoying character because he literally took over the storyline, was promoted over you and was credited with pretty much everything, despite playing very little part in any of it.
Kiel was with us for a lot of the southsun content, was physically leading us through uncharted areas and we actually saw her do things like destroy the contracts that were keeping people in slavery.
If you think our characters have more of a reason to be on the council, then I don’t think you understand the lore well enough to be talking about those things.
Am I the only person who voted for Ellen Kiel because I thought she’d make a better council member than Evon Gnashblade?
No, but none of the Evon voters want to listen to that. They’d rather blame it on people wanting cheaper travel, pretty girls or the election just being plain rigged.
I’d love to see the Fall of Abaddon explored, but a fractal was never the ideal place for that to happen.
This game was not created to support mounts. It would pretty much break the game. Bad planning on ANet’s part? Very much so. Can it be changed now? No. Not without drastically altering the game.
I don’t see how it’s bad planning when it was a purposeful design choice.
Mounts in most MMO’s serve as little more than status symbols, they’re used to show off, and flash in peoples faces, they clutter up the towns/environments and are just plain not needed in the game (or wanted by most of the community).
If they ever add something like mounts, then it should be similar to the siege devourers or wurms in GW1. Temporary mounts that have a purpose and are used in specific areas that are designed to utilize them.
I’ve been slowly working towards a legendary, but I’ve been playing regularly since launch and I’m not particularly close to it. So like most others have said.. I find it hard to be impressed, since all it means is that the player was extremely lucky, grinded a lot and/or spent a lot of real life money.
It’s a good goal to strive towards and I’ll be pretty pleased when I can eventually make my own, but I see it as more of a personal accomplishment, rather than something to brag about.
This is kind of strange… If everything listed under “event” is temporary.. They said they would add MORE permanent stuff, but this looks like tons of temporary content if thats the case… Anet, help us out
?
But you have to remember that the new content here was likely designed and made several months ago. They have said they want to start gearing towards more permanent stuff, but if they’ve only just started to focus on that change, it could be another month or two before we start seeing that happen.
Queen Jennah will be assassinated during her Jubilee?
Enough of these goody goody two shoes characters! Please, please start killing them off!
And what would you replace them with? All of the characters in this game, goody two shoes or no, are cardboard cutouts. There’s no more depth to Evon Gnashblade than there is Ellen Kiel, for example.
Everything you said is true. However, goody two shoes are worse than other types of cardboard cutouts (that’s why I’d like to see Kiel killed off as well). And I would replace them with more complex characters that are more realistically human with human motivations, flaws, etc. Is that too much to ask?
Or they could just develop the characters we already have and flesh them out more. We haven’t seen Jennah enough or know enough about her to say she’s a flawless and perfect ruler. Maybe she has some deep, dark secrets? Maybe she’s not as great as ruling as it would seem? Maybe she’s not who we think she is? Maybe she’s having a secret affair with Rox.
I definitely agree that we need more depth and lore in the game, but I don’t see how just replacing the characters would help that.
Just want to ask, why do you all want the Queen to die so much? So that your Warrior Genes can snicker away with glee? Why stop there? Lets burn Divinity’s Reach to the ground while we are at it.
No survivors. Period.
It probably has to do with how uninspired and cliché characters like Jennah (and Salma before her) are written. They are like fanfiction Disney Princesses. The “Good Queen” who is a super hot babe that is fair and just, seemingly has no flaws and conveniently was one of the main forces that finally brought charr and humans together. Some people like a character with flaws and are disinterested or annoyed by ones that don’t seem to have them. Juxtapose the way Kiel and Evon are portrayed in Candidate trials, it’s like white and black (I’ll assume in good faith that their skin and fur colours are coincidences). A lot of us want a little grey in our world, not just black and white.
This is why I would have liked if the theory about (Edge of Destiny spoilers) her controlling Logan with some kind of mesmer spell was true. It wouldn’t have necessarily meant she was “evil” but would have giving her a bit more of a rough edge and character depth, not to mention make Logan seem like less of an incompetent moron.
Still, I don’t think they’d kill her off. It would make for an interesting plot development, as it would leave the humans in a very vulnerable position, but it would put that whole Logan/Jennah plot to waste. I’m pretty sure we’ll see some kind of interruption to the event though, most likely involving those clockwork knights going haywire.
I’m definitely not pleased that we seem to be getting nothing but more minigames and fluff with this content, but the quality of life features sound really fantastic and at a guess, I’d assume they’re at least building up to something bigger happening, like what we saw happen with the Aetherblades at the Dragon Festival.
I don’t think Rox and Braham are just randomly in the logo for no reason.
Good to hear from the devs on this one. While I actually surprisingly enjoyed the past few minigames, I really wouldn’t have liked to see more for this update. A break from jumping puzzles is needed too. A good focus on some actual story content and plot progression would be great. Maybe some new quests that aren’t completely focused on combat too.
Why would ANET rig the election? They are the ones trying to collect data which character we want to see in the future.
Obviously, Anet already has in mind which fractal they want to build. Everything else about the election doesn’t matter. The only thing that will affect the devs is which fractal to build. They are going to build Thaumanova; that is obvious since it ties in better with GW2 lore. Many current players don’t care about Abaddon because they didn’t play GW1. So how to ensure that Ellen Kiel wins and therefore Thaumanova gets built….. make sure the votes show her as the winner. Simple.
Those who don’t care about the lore probably don’t care about the Thaumanova either. Abaddon is just as relevant to GW2 as he was to GW1, he’s still a major part of the history that I’m sure many new players want to learn about too.
But I’m also getting pretty tired of hearing the argument that only those who didn’t play GW1 want Kiel to win. Not everyone cares about the fractals or thinks they’re the best method of expanding the lore, if we go back and learn more about the human gods, I’d like to see it fleshed out in something that’s bigger than a 15-minute mini dungeon you run through several times a day.

I had a lot of fun with the game, there’s a lot of tactics involved in trying to stay alive and I liked that there was a focus on actual survival, not just “kill everything”.
The grace period doesn’t make a lot of sense though, I agree with that. It leads to everyone just having an all out brawl for the first two minutes and if you happen to be low on health just before the time runs out, you’re pretty much screwed.
My bigger problem was with the achievements and both of the new minigames suffered from that. Instead of actually trying to play the game properly, people were only interested in getting kills for the achievements, winning the games was a secondary objective and that sucked a lot of the fun out of them.
It would be great if Evon is Mr.E, it would be a fairly interesting twist and it somewhat fits with what we learned about his past in the short story.
Kiel almost definitely isn’t Scarlet though. She’s obviously being portrayed as the goody-toe-shoes hero and nothing about her has even hinted that there might be more going on. I do hope they flesh out her character a bit more if she gets the seat on the council, but making her outright evil wouldn’t really be good development for her or make sense in terms of the lore.
I really enjoyed Sea of Sorrows. It’s a pretty interesting story and there’s a lot of lore for Lions Arch and the ways its run, which really gives you a better understanding and appreciation for the city. It’s pretty relevant with the current election going on there too.
Ghosts of Ascalon gives a lot of insight into Ascalon (surprise, surprise) and the relationship between the humans and charr, and it was generally pretty enjoyable.
Edge of Destiny is perhaps the most relevant, as the events directly tie into the main plot of GW2 and it gives a lot of backstory to some of the core characters.. However, it’s pretty poorly written and leaves you with a pretty poor impression of the main character.
With ESO coming out, this game will become another WoW wannabe with some gear grind but no raid content (lol). Anet chose to please the PvE crowd, and they should pay for it dearly.
Some of us like this game, why do folks have to be actively malicious and want it to die?
Stop trying to mess with our fun, and go play a game that’s fun for you.
Also, to folks above, I am a guild wars 1 vet and I like guild wars 2. So do the other vets I know. A few disgruntled folks on the forums don’t speak for all GW1 vets.
I’m a GW1 vet and I absolutely loathe GW2. I loved GW2 until ‘Flame & Frost’. It’s been nothing but garbage ever since.
Why would anyone not like the game after F & F is beyond me, now if you’ve said you liked it until November (with the introduction of Ascended gear) I can understand it, but F & F? Really?
I don’t like being forced to adhere to a gaming schedule to complete temporary living story content. I game on my own time.
I don’t like content of the living story. Steampunk Mole people, Steampunk Charr, Walking Cabbages, Angry Crabs, Flying Pirates, Ballooning Merchants…all very bland and uninspired.
BTW, ascended gear means nothing to me. I don’t chase carrots on sticks, do dailies or group with others for instances/dungeons/fractals.
I loved the game until F&F. I now loathe it due to the ‘Living Story’.
If you dont chase carrots on sticks like you claim why you feel you’re being forced to play the game on a schedule exactly? I can understand to a point people who have to have the carrot thus feeling pressured to complete content in 2 week periods, but if you dont care about the carrot? just log on whenever you log on and play whatever is on offer then! its simple, its not like you’d be confused if you did sky pirates without doing F&F first right? Or just ignore all of the LS if you’re so inclined, do the content you like and thats it, its not like the not so secret jumping puzzle isnt fun unless you followed the sky pirates storyline.
I swear this is beyond puzzling to me. The same game you love is still entirely there. You’re loathing it simply because they’re giving you free stuff every 2 weeks!
They aren’t giving me ‘free stuff’ every two weeks. They are removing content every two weeks.
I agree with some of your points, I dislike the fact so much of the content is simply removed and that they’re trying to force us into a specific schedule.. But they’re still adding new content every two weeks for free. Whether or not you want to do it is irrelevant.
Just to make sure the developers are aware, a lot of us had the same problem on server I was on. Extreme lag about 2 hours in, then we were all booted out and unable to log back in until it was already over.
Pretty upset I missed out on the unique bag, nevermind the good loot.
