I’m quite stubborn with wanting to play celestial. However, if there was a stat combination whereby I can replace the condi and healing power stat for something else, that would be great too. However I have no clue what good number for the power, precision, ferocity, vitality and toughness stats would be….

Hi!

I believe I am well versed when it comes to using my staff Ele.
With full exotic celestial gear, I would never manage to kill tanky roamers in a fight, so I dropped this build, until there was a way for me to get ascended gear via PVP. I’ve decided to pick this build back up as I loved playing it so much and I couldn’t find anything else enjoyable to play.

And so to the point. Are there any celestial staff Ele players out there that can share with me their experiences? I don’t care how long it takes me to kill someone, as long as it’s possible.

THANK YOU

Advice on Guard Build w. Minstrel/Nomad

in Guardian

As with anyone asking about tanky builds, let me preface this with: tankiness is largely unnecessary in pve, as killing things faster tends to make it easier. Even then druids/water eles usually do healing better. A glass PS warrior can cover might. Raids prefer chronomancer tanks as they offer alacrity, distortion (invuln), and some quickness. The difference between heavy and light armor defense with no added toughness is ~15%, and full toughness is only going to reduce that gap and lower incoming direct damage ~50% assuming you double your defense. Most of your survivability comes from abilities/traits, so you generally only want as much defensive stats as is necessary to survive (applies to all game modes). Everyone could run T4 fractals in nomad’s, but it would take hours.

Assuming your heart’s set on holy/protection paladin life, if you’re doing pve (which I assume to be fractals) minstrels is far better because the added group support far outweighs any possible benefit of greater personal survivability (generally unnecessary by stats) given by nomad’s. You probably won’t be allowed in a serious learning raid with either, and you shouldn’t try to join on that. I haven’t tried full minstrel’s in wvw but a mix of nomad’s and minstrels can make a near-unkillable rezbot. If you’re running in a blob it’s just a mosh pit, but generally doing damage is a good thing. Be aware neither stat set exists in pvp, mender’s/magi’s are the two healing amulets (they have a separate stat system). Also be aware that your weapons/utilities need to change based on the situation between wvw/pve. That being said I’d still recommend having different armor sets for wvw/pve especially if doing fractals, as infusions make a case for separation and runes have different effectiveness in either.

http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Guardian_-_Merciful_Frontline This is pretty good considering the stats you’re looking for, but if you want something with more consecrations it might be more difficult/custom. Stand Your Ground is one of the best buttons on Guardian in wvw, and two different consecrations provide boons/healing, and the healing one disappears after 10 enemy bumps. If you’re really set on using the same armor, it’s easier to run wvw runes in fractals than fractal runes in wvw.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vVAQNApeSlsAhehYrQwYIwPEHMEFuCmgv8WsdZAkbh8b/A-ThxHQBg7JA6DeoSQAcKA+x+DAU5H8U/hUA+tFA-e If I ran minstrels on uncategorized fractal this is probably what it would look like for the harpy sections. Given the boon duration you’d probably want to run staff instead of hammer. But you need to know what skills do what and change them based on the situation. Take battle presence always unless you need extra stab. Signet of courage can work if you don’t want/need an invuln or virtue reset. Healing breeze is less tanky than shelter but gives more group support. If you’re dying but your party isn’t (how it feels to run with necros), take writ of persistence and invigorated bulwark. Shield of the Avenger is good for dealing with projectiles. Sanctuary can be good for providing space to rez or breaking cc bars. Purging flames is good when the instability is “afflicted”. Merciful intervention can heal for a lot and get you to a downed ally instantly. Retreat is good when you have to kite aoe’s like in Mai Trin or the end of Snowblind. Also remember your dodgeroll heals and weaponswap gives you another dodge.

Thanks for the deep insight on the guardian!

Your remark on serious raid groups not wanting to recruit minstrel/nomad stat guardians does concern me. Afterall, I would like to play with people who enjoy a challenge like I do.

I thought If i could keep an upkeep of boons and healing, then it would cover for my lack of damage, as it increases my allies’ level of efficiency and damage output. I suppose I was wrong. I suppose adding some Knights armour/Paladin armour would help?

As for why I’m so persistent on using guard as a support and not the chronomancer – I made the stupid mistake of listening to my peers and making full ascended berserker armour. Bursty glass cannon builds were never my thing; Neither is mindlessly defeating opponents with memorised rotations. I’ve always played WvW up until now, so I’m poor. Meaning I cannot make an another set without grinding (which I absolutely hate doing). Instead I’ve decided to make a build that I know I won’t be too concerned about dieing too often and becoming dead weight in order to do fractals and raids; While learning the ins and outs of both game modes. In doing so I could find ascended weapon/armour sets and go for different builds (like the tank chronomancer) from there.

Since this is my situation, would you reccomend a certain cap of healing power/toughness/power/concentration? So I can try and keep to that cap by changing all the stats on my ascended berserker armour accordingly. Thanks!

Hi!
I’m an avid mmo gamer and I love to support/heal/boon share and etc.
I’ve noticed however people tend to avoid builds with full tankiness, healing potentional and boon share potentional but no damage whatsoever.

Despite this, I still would like to make a guardian build with Minstrel/Nomad stats for all game modes: WvW/PvP/PvE

First and foremost, If anyone is generous enough, could they share their tanky/healing/boon share guardian builds?

Finally, could someone explain to me how ineffective/effective these stat choices could be. I would like to know so I am prepared for all the backlash from peers.

Thanks guys! Just to help out with build reccomendations, I really like using concecration utility skills. They can really save people when timed right and the time of gameplay with concecrations requires real good observation skills. I like a build that makes me think

swapping Shiro with Glint for more survivability in wvw.

As you can see the recent nerf to Unwavering Avoidance basically killed the build.

The only thing for solo Rev is basically

This is a full power build plays like a power Thief.

It is funny how people automatically think blobbing as a zerg will win you the match. As with real warfare, every aspect is a factor in victory. A zerg of 50 pugs will be decimated by an organised elite group of 20. A 5 man tower group can fend off a 50 man zerg with the right siege placement.

Care to enlighten me? :P

What do WvWers want?

What WvW needs is a purpose.

What many of us have wished for from the beginning is that WvW be a serious competitive game-mode(with all the balance related things people have already listed).

Right now playing WvW does not matter, playing WvW skillfully does not matter. Winning the week does not matter. Winning outnumbered fights, or PPTing better than anyone else does not matter.

Now imagine if WvW had the structural framework to give a purpose to doing WvW. Skirmishes were a baby step in that direction, but have lacked any sort of follow up at all.

Make winning matter, make playing well matter. Give people a reason to be in WvW and give them a reason to improve their play.

This!

I feel that immersion into the server you are currently defending for would provide this purpose.

Maybe if there was a lore based on the different server names?
The server would feel more like home and would give me a reason to protect it.

Having mentioned protecting the world, tbh there isn’t much to protect. If we leave the borderlands as they are, after a week, it’ll flip anyways. Or after waiting for RI, it’ll flip again. Maybe If there was something that could be lost, but wouldn’t affect the game itself? For instance, If you were to lose the stonemist castle, the citizens within its walls would be subject to massacre.

Also, each individual borderlands aren’t distinguishable by server. Defending our homelands isn’t more or less meaningful than invading an enemy homeland.

One thing that hooked me onto gw2 were the books. Once I’ve learned that the city of Ascalon was once of human land, it gave me an affinity towards it and gave me the urge to kill every charr in Ascalon on sight. Something that could work for WvW?

Getting rid of name tags from an enemy’s perspective, so geurilla/ninja (whatever you want to call it) tactics/strategies are more applicable.

I think it’ll encourage a variety of war strategies and can expand from the only type of warfare we’re all accustomed to: blob fighting.

Strategy in WvW? hmm… get with a commander that knows how to run a blob; get into ts so you can follow his/her commands quickly; shoot to kill and don’t die. For the most part it’s simply a case of putting on your borg gear and listening to the voices in your head blessing your for accepting your assimilation without much struggle.

THAT is the way of WvW these days.

Yes I’ve done that ^^
I’ve been able to learn tactics on how to beseige certain objectives.

Like the cata spot in EB where you can hit the base of a cliff that is situated below the tower near the nothern keep, where there are ascalonian ghosts and a giant worm near the keeps facade. It impressed me how you could take advantage of the splash damage despite the wall being above the cata.

However, rarely did the tag ever mention strategic ideas behind their choice of manouvers

Strategy and Tactics? As you stated, real warfare doesn’t translate into this very well. In fact, real war is boring a lot of the times. Just watch Das Boot (movie about life on a German U-boat).

If you want to win I am afraid it’s less about tactics. If you want to have fun that’s also another story.

For “winning” if it’s even applicable:

1. Don’t die, it gives the team a point.
2. Attack unoccupied objectives, you waste less time and potentially die less.
3. Have more numbers in people, items, supply, siege, and anything really.
4. Stomp for more points.
5. Buy guilds to fill dead time-zones because Coverage and population wins (harder to do nowadays)

Now ask, are any of these things fun? I have my preferences, but it’s up to you!

I’d imagine attacking unoccupied objectives would be preferable. However, due to the ‘swords’ icon appearing on the map, it notifies enemies that the objective is currently besieged by us.

How about splitting the zerg into a small group to attack other important objectives that we are more likely to attack, buying us time!

I’ve noticed that the members of a zerg tend to attack anything in sight out of boredom. If the small group were to split from spawn and leave behind a trail of red (in the case where I’m in red team), then the tag would be more inclined to go there than to us!

Hi! I’ve recently made a revenant and kind of new to the class and I need advice for my Revenant solo roaming wvw build.

To give a vague idea of what my playstyle is like, I use the following build types for other classes: (I’ll probably list features of the build that I like)
Condi Thief:
Pistol/Dagger
Dire stats
Venom Utility skills
Dash (dodge roll)

Engineer
Pistol/Shield
Dire/Sinister/Viper stats
Bomb toolkit, Rocket boots, ‘Spanner’ toolkit, Turret Elite

The above builds are my two favourites when it comes to solo roaming! I love mobility and being able to juke in and out of opponents, whether using invis, terrain, escape mechanism skills. I also like to capitalise on my build’s maneouvers by using hit and run tactics. Hence the venoms and bomb kit. I’m a very defensive player.

I would like advice on a build that carries if not all but most features

Thank you for your time on reading this post and have a good one.

Hi! I’ve recently become an enthusiast in strategy and tactics. I began reading books like 33 Strategies of War, Art of War and The Book of Five Rings, and I’m itching to apply what I’ve learned, to the WvW battlefield.

However, since I’m an amateur when it comes to understanding anything when it comes to strategy, I’m at a loss. On top of this, warfare in real life vs warfare in a game where there are so many limitations; really seem to differ.

Since I need time to gather 350g to buy a commander tag anyways, I was curious to learn and hear from other experienced commanders who have been leading in WvW for a long while. Specifically the strategy behind leading small groups, as my friends are in two low populated servers: Anvil Rock and Ferguson’s Crossing.

In the meantime, I hope to study the map and wait for some good advice! Thank you for your time ^^

If there has been a change can somebody tell me how exactly they’ve changed this? I’ve checked the patch notes and i can’t seem to find anything.

Although there have been some frustrating things about WvW, PvP and PvE (which other people have already addressed and i don’t want to talk about them now since that isn’t the purpose of this forum post), I could see how much effort you’ve put in, into the game in order to make it a wonderful experience. The sheer size of the new wvw maps. The small intricate details and the complexity of the design of the new PvE maps is just amazing. You’ve also listened to the calls of players and even try to interact with them through Twitch TV and points of interest videos (which sadly are now gone) on youtube. They asked (whined seems to be a better word tbh) for more endgame content and you guys delivered

I just like to say that i trust in Anet and i absolutely don’t care about any flaws of the game for i know Anet listens to the community and i feel you guys are putting in your utmost effort.

How about us Tankers and Healers? :(

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hwarang.4789

Hwarang.4789

Since the beginning of GW2, my main characer has been a bunker Arcane/Water/Earth Staff Elementalist.

I’ve always played her a in a more supportive role, providing boons, regenerations and being able to tank stuff if needed.

The playstyle and the effectivness of the build are viable; the issue is that there’s a certain style of player that doesn’t care about “viable” exactly – they care about doing things as fast as possible.

We reach a bit of a design pitfall. Arena.net is afraid of creating content that requires “tanks” or “healers”, since that would be reminiscent of the holy trinity that GW2 has done away with. But if content doesn’t require tanks/healers, it means that focusing solely on DPS should work – and should, logically, be the fastest way to do it.

So people that want to farm will tend to favor playing with all-out DPS builds and will often want their partymates to also be that way.

Still, I do find dungeons and fractals parties from time do time that don’t seem to care about that, and it’s a fun experience.

I see based on all these comments it is more about content. Thank you. Lets hope that the expansion’s promised harder content allows us supporters to shine

have you tried a guardian mace/focus build with a lot of PVT gear and maybe some celestial/cleric trinkets? Its like a tank + healer in one bro…

Mhmm i’ve tried but there never seemed to be enough heals to keep my ally alive. I’ve been kicked out of many dungeons because they tell me healing/tanking just isn’t viable in Gw2. People refuse to party with me in WvW. And i must admit the heals aren’t particularly that great when a thief can oneshot backstab you.

Run with a more organized group for wvw – blasting water fields in out numbered situations (usually hammer train guardians wars and eles for water fields and cc mostly) like in a 15vs 20 fight is why the 15 can win.

as for dungeons – well what do you expect? at this point we need new content. roles won’t change anything. us vets have everything so well memorized that the most efficient means of doing dungeons for the 500th time is full offense and no defense because we don’t want to waste time.

You can do a support build, I’ve guildies that have done it with ele or guard. Just go to that sort of group. You need other group members with toughness gear to make the healing worth while.

Also, people move out of the fields after i put down the field when i try to heal them, hence i wouldn’t say a water field ele heal build would be VIABLE

This is an advanced game. Like I said. Go with more organized people or well, play another game. I like this game because it highly rewards organized and skilled play.

Hmm yes it is true that i have trouble finding my own niche where people appreciate some support and not full dps. Though i think it doesn’t make sense that i ask my party member to change their stat preference just so that i can heal em. I thought the idea of supporting was to keep your ally alive so they can perform at their utmost potential.

Also the 15 v 20 situation you were talking about is very situational. I wouldn’t be able to play with whomever i like, there is most definitely going to be another pug who may possible overlap my water field. It just isn’t reliable

However, your comment sort of gave me a lil more confidence to try my full heal builds again. Thanks again for your reply

How about us Tankers and Healers? :(

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hwarang.4789

Hwarang.4789

Hi, i want to talk about GW2’s absence of any VIABLE tanking and healing play styles.

I really enjoy the role of a healer and a tanker but i feel that in GW2 as of now, i can’t create a build of any class that can solely do any of the two.

Yes i understand that ANET wanted to move away from the HOLY TRINITY tradition of other MMOs, because of the frustration of whereby ALMOST everybody wants to dps and long que times due to waiting for a healer or tanker in a party. Allowing each individual to be self-sufficient fixed this problem and i applaud ANET for doing so.

But how about us? the minority of Gw2 ( i assume ).

The ability to create builds that tank, heal and dps supposedly brought diversity to GW2, but ironically it has left us passionate healers and tankers unable to play the way we like.

This isn’t the only issue. Due to everyone being able to do everything, there isn’t a clear understanding of what everyone is capable of in a party and hence it’s almost impossible to coordinate and work together. Hence the full damage meta since killing everything instantly rallies everybody anyways and nobody gives a dime whether or not you’re down.

In PVE there isn’t a NEED for positioning and hence the stacking mechanic. Hence, It truly doesn’t feel like there is a need to communicate with each other or cooperate together in a party. Instead we just stack up into a sandwich and dps away.

In WvW, it feels like a dogfight where everyone just runs around trying to kill each other as fast as possible. There is no order, there is no tactical positioning of players. It doesn’t matter if you’re up front or way at the back.

Now some people here may state that YES there are builds for Guardians and other classes where you can trait and build SOLELY for tanking and healing. but are they VIABLE. Do they work? Healing power scales so bad in this game that tanking and healing just isn’t an option. Also i am not ignoring the legend: Ventari of the upcoming class Revenant, but i do not want to play that one class for the rest of my GW2 hours.

Also, am i supporting the HOLY TRINITY? No! I ABSOLUTELY think that GW2 has done such a great job of attempting to be different! and i really appreciate that. I just want full tanking and healing an option in this game that is all.

I still love GW2 and i’ll continue to play this game. This is just one of the very few things that i do not like about it and i would like to say thank you to ANET for their continued effort on trying to make this game enjoyable! <3

Many thanks to those who read this post ’till the end.

and using wall of reflection requires timing to use when a boss is actually using their projectiles, retreat requires timing to block a relevant attack, a warrior needs to place their banners in the more relevant fights rather than every trash mob, a thief needs to place their smoke screen during a mesmer/guardian’s reflect downtime and so on and so forth.

“hitting as many allies as possible” literally just means using a utility skill while around people, I don’t get how that is so exciting when you do that anyway. guardian tome can burst heal as well.

you literally could have just said “I find healing more interesting than the support options currently present in the game” but instead you’re trying to make it sound a lot more awesome than it actually is, when what you’re asking for is already present in the game.

i suppose so. My opinion is definitely very biased. But out of all the things you’ve mentioned that was one skill per class. Every class has one skill that supports somebody in someway since it is a team game in pvp and in WvW, it’s no surprise. However what i really seek is a support play style that can do everything from ccing, to blinds and reflects and or heals as you mentioned above ^^ This is just one of the selfish things that i’ve always wanted in gw2 and i mentioned in the post that i am aware that i doubt anything would happen ’cause of one person, so i was wondering who else thought the same way i do.

errrrr

isn’t “moving your tome around to heal and cc’ing big crowds” the same as “press utility skills and wait for their CD”?

no not really. The tome requires timing and “hitting” as many allies as possible with your tome and you’re constantly having to focus on where your tome is going to maximise your healing potential you also have the choice of bursting your tome for burst healing.

The reason why i post this here is because:
1. I’m seeking suggestions for builds i may have missed that are fun as a support
2. wanted to sort of rant about how boring the support role can be with the play styles available now, but no hard feelings since it’s never going to be fixed anyways
3. wanted to thank Anet for the introduction of Ventari Revenant

and i wasn’t sure where to post this.

I understand that gw2 wanted to scrap a healing class as a whole since people complain that a healer class was essential in gw1 and players had no fun since they HAD to play the healer.

Of course as a player like me who loves to heal and keep my allies alive gets no fun but i fully understand that you can’t keep everyone happy so i went with the flow

HOWEVER with the support choices now such as the banner warrior, shout warrior, shout guardian, i feel that their gameplay is really monotonous. Warrior, put down all three of your banners and done, just spam weapon skills. Shouts; Use all your shout skills to buff allies and heal (sure the three shouts heal alot, but you just spent all three of your utilility skills. You’re now just a sitting duck till your CDS are off), now what?

My point is…. is that playing the support really isn’t as interactive as other play styles. Some of you may disagree as you’re having a lot of fun with these builds but i can’t bear pressing all my utility skills mindlessly over and over again. I enjoy gw2’s lore and WvW gameplay to simply just quit and move on to another game. Also i have a mac…. so this is probably the only good mmo i can play.

Which is why i’m here now seeing if maybe i’m the only person and if maybe there will be some changes?

I’d also like to ask people to share some of the support builds they found fun

and THANK YOU for bringing in Ventari revenant… but it’ll be months until expansion comes out so….. yeh… i need a new build in the meantime ><

HI! i’ve been looking through forums and wiki but all their suggestions couldn’t get me the Ascended amulet with Sinister stats and offensive infusion slot. I’ve tried going to the edge of the mists to buy it from Jocasta… it wasn’t there. I went to Lions arch and tried talking to the laurel merchant… wasn’t there either. I have also been to the quarter masters in silver wastes, but it wasn’t there either. Help?

Help with hybrid ranger build

in Ranger

Hi! as the title suggests, i’m trying to build a TRAPPER RANGER with RUNES OF THE TRAPPER with reasonable condi damage.

However i’d like to stick with the longbow, hence i’d like a reasonable amount of Berserker stats to be able to deal some burst damage too.

Precision should be high enough to have at least 50% crit chance, whilst condo damage reasonably high and i’d like to invest the rest of the possible stats i can get into Power and Ferocity.

I’ve been trying to do the math all day using exotic gear but i think a bit of help from the forums won’t hurt :P Not sure what combination of armour pieces or trinkets would provide me the above. Please help! Thank you!

Power, Ferocity, Condi stats?

I was just trying out something for fun

I’m thinking of building a trapper, stealth, longbow ranger. I’ll be using superior sigils of intelligence to get the 3 shots of 100 percent crit chance and stealth out and reposition. Much like a sniper! the build really isn’t effective at all but it’s fun knowing you’re playing like a sniper :P

Deadly arts trait line: Improvisation

in Thief

Improvisation randomly selects one of the 5 skill types (Venoms, Signets, Traps, Tricks, or Deceptions) to recharge, so it will not necessarily choose a skill type that you are using.

Hi, i’m a trapper Thief (i know it’s condemned upon, but i just do it for fun) and i’ve tried using this trait so that i can reset all my traps. However everytime i steal i don’t get my traps cd reset. I’m suspecting what the trait REALLY does is randomly choose a skill type and reset it’s CD, though it wasn’t clear about that in the description box, but i just wanted to make sure it wasn’t a glitch of some sort on my part. Thank you!

When/where it's best to find solo roamers

in WvW

To find roamers, watch the map, look for camps being flipped by enemies. Usually you can guess by seeing if the camps are being taken in a clockwise/counter clockwise fashion. Wait at the next camp. Also, some ppl hang out on the Borderlands Bloodlust ruins. Watch for them being camped. They will have the color of an opposing server if someone is/just was on the capture point. Or hang around the camps close to the spawn areas of opposing servers. Also, have you tried Obsidian Sanctum arena? Especially Thursday/Friday before reset, you can sometimes find plenty of players to duel with if that’s what you want. Another thing you can try is to ask in chat if anyone is havoking and join a small party. Make some friends.

Before leaving FC, is there a TS or Forum for the server you can ask other servermates? If there’s no one on during your time zone ever, I’d think about a transfer also. Keep in mind, long queue times in the top tiers are real. I hope it works out on FC for you though. GL HF

I’ve tried baiting in people by flipping camps near their spawn and standing in the ruins to attract attention but nobody seems to come. maybe one or two and sometimes 3 (which is great, 1v3 is a wonderful experience) but when one dies they all run for it. Sorta sad that there are few in this server that don’t have a competitive mentality

Some tell me to just do PVP but it’s different…. the terrain and hostile mobs make it very strategic. I can lure 2 people into a band of drakes and let them take a little damage to even up the odds, or even use those drakes so i can cloak and dagger them into safety. Also being able to fight somebody with a stronger build is more challenging. Whereas in PVP everyone is on even ground in terms of stats

Thank you for your reply btw

Hi, i’m from Fergusson’s Crossing and against Borlis pass and Isle of Janthir. I’m not sure what determines which server i’m up against but i’d like to know which server i should join so i can find a lot more solo roamers like me to fight.

OR

A certain time or place where i should go to find a lot of enemy solo roamers. I live in Australia so it would help if anyone knows approx what time they thought they found a lot of solo roamers to fight. Thanks ^^

You can go for a Aegis of Purity look from old Cantha, like Rei Ki in GW1.

Is this your toon? Do you have any idea what the helm’s called? I’m guessing the pauldrons are from the priory, breast plate part of the Phalanx set and the lower half i vaguely remember coming across this one so i’m confident i can pull this look off if i only know the helm x) THANKS for sharing the pic!

Anything on the lines of a Ronin, Monk, Martial Artists like appearance. Thanks!

NOTE: Preferably Heavy Armour!

Unfortunately it’s part of an outfit and not a separate armor piece, so if you want this hat it’s all or nothing. Like Lambent said, it’s the Hexed outfit.

Thanks for the head’s up ^^ i can mine corn at my friend’s home instance but getting 3000 is going to take a while. I also just found that it is for female characters only. Ah well i guess i just have to wait. Thank you though!
