To my children in Sea of Sorrows…

It is very rare for me to be standing here and not knowing what to say. But this is one of those rare once in a life time occasions, and each stroke makes me tremble in fear of letting go and longing to stay with you for one moment longer.

It all began on August 25th 2012. One hundred and fifty two days have since passed since that fateful day.

Since that day, the glory of Sea of Sorrows has been my only care in life. To me, SOS was more than a server. It was a nation, and its people my responsibility. Not a day goes by where I did not sit and contemplate how our country could become the absolute superpower in military might and its people allowed to hold their head up high on the world arena that is WvW.

Although the perpetual war wages on, and we eagerly await the arrival of our British and European brothers and sisters, the legacy of Sea of Sorrows is forever unchangeable.

My proud children, born in the slums of WvW, took arms and rose up when destiny called upon you to take a stand. You did not give up when the world laughed in your face. You did not give up when your adversaries numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Each wave you beat back made you stronger, and now, after your undefeated streak of victories, as of January 23rd 2013, you are now the legendary champion of North American WvW.

Proud of you I am, but alas the callings of my other life have finally grown too loud for me to ignore.

My sons and daughters, today, I must leave you.

Looking back, you were my greatest pride and joy. You are something that no MMO can give me ever again.

“What if I tried to run an online MMORPG guild like I run my company in real life?” – The idea of The Black Lion Mercenary [MERC] was born from a simple concept. Today SoS is the undisputed champion of WvW in NA servers. However, we still have no European leadership. Since we began recruitment, many European individuals have come, yet there is still no euro leadership or guilds.

We are not asking for huge major European guilds. Just small European 40 man guilds would be perfect to take up the mantle and lead our server’s disorganized European forces. Be that hero, make a difference in the hottest battlefield on earth. Our opponents are stacked, fight major European guilds such as HB, EMP, RG. We don’t play for badges, we don’t play for points, we play to be the BEST WvW server in the world. As much as I respect you guys trying to recruit, trying to do so, by directly sending mails to gm´s of the the current #3 server, that is already lacking coverage compared to you and JQ, is not only really low. But it will also hurt you in the end if you end up fighting 1 server instead of 2.

I think everyone should seriously consider this move and contemplate the positive aspects. You can’t be a winner if you’re not number one and there is only one number one!

Don’t you want to move somewhere and be number one by default? You won’t even have to DO anything.

A lot of people have this romantic notion that working up to number is cool and amazing.

But everyone knows that the longer you stay in Tier 1, the faster you and your members burnout. The next time, you wont have the option to move to a bottom tier and work your way back up again in a relaxed way. You want to make sure your future allies are the proven real deal.

Suggesting that guilds should look elsewhere for the sake of increasing competitiveness in t1 has nothing to do with playing properly. I’m sure we all use a keyboard and a mouse to move about and play the game, which is proper and I hope for your sake ergonomically correct. If you mean proper in the sense of some higher moral standard, then consider this: surely promoting competitiveness in t1 is a greater good than maintaining an SOS blowout since it helps far more people than SOS maintaining or increasing their blowouts ever would. It’s a utilitarian approach to T1.

So convoluted yet so off the mark. To play properly in wvw is simply to play to win. Recruitment is merely another strategy. Rationally speaking, joining the top server is ideal since it will yield the best reward (as per the upcoming patch). There’s nothing metaphysical about it. I can’t say anything about your intention in this regard then, DISINFORMATION is a strategy too afterall. Which one is more agreeable is entirely up to the subject.

Also, we’ll add a new motivation to the WvW domain that goes beyond the overall weekly score to give more short term reasons to be winning in WvW as well.

I don’t think you’re going to be able to trick Europeans into playing 24/7 for you. They need to sleep at some point.

On another server, maybe that’s the situation top euro transfer guilds, but SOS has great coverage all around.

At the moment, I often ask oceanic and Asian guildies to stop playing during USA prime times cause we should reserve our energy for our own prime times. Its so organized I am excited just talking about it!!!!

Thank you for asking this question and I will address it.

Why on earth does 1st place need to recruit?

Well for several reasons.

1. First place requires players WvW. Other less realistic servers or guilds will make you think that having a lot of troops is wrong, and that they are able to compete in tier one is because of their amazingly low numbers and high skill. Sorry, but that is an unrealistic way of thinking and I think it really insults the intelligence of the people. With numbers, there is nothing. No one to implement your strategies. No one to hold the defensive lines. No one to fight when you decide to take a day off because you have a real life.

2. A lot of servers become complacent with their status quo. “I am winning today because of my mad skillz, so I dont need to do anything about tomorrow”. There are many many children’s stories teaching us as people, we need to prepare for tomorrow. I guess Sea of Sorrows leaders understood that message better than others.

3. Sea of Sorrows does not want to be a fad server. We did not work our way to the top so that we can win once or twice or brag about it. We came to the top so that we can enjoy the best fights against the best enemies. Our enemy portal bombs, we must portal bomb better. Our enemy uses 10 golems to rush, we must use 20! Our enemy plays for 10 hours, we must play for 12 hours! Our enemy is RECRUITING MORE GUILDS, we must recruit MORE and BETTER guilds. That is all part of the art of wvw and healthy compeition.

So, I ask you guild leaders to decide again. Join a serious WvW server, who has a consistent track record and forward thinking leadership. Or something else?

I shall answer your question.

It is a misconception that SOS holds top PPT 90% of the time. There is a constant 5-7 hour window during EURO prime time that SOS consistently hold under 100 ppt because of ZERO European guild coverage. Our winning margins are not crazy 100k+ wins. They are always very marginal, 10k to 30k. Once we won by only 3k points!

The reason why we are winning is because our North Americans and Oceanics and Asians are playing 10+ hours a day to keep up with the win, we want to win and we will put in extra effort. But 15 weeks of brute force overplaying will eventually lead to burn out.

Sea of Sorrows leaders are all very forward thinking people, we have a responsibility towards our guildmates and friends in our server, to make it better, make it more enjoyable, and we need to ensure the game/work/life balance of all of our people.

I am sure many competitive WvW guilds in Europe face the same problem, but is there a high quality well rounded server to transfer to other than Sea of Sorrows? Maybe there is, but Sea of Sorrows, the obvious solution is right infront of you right now.

Yes. It isn’t hard to transfer anywhere. What is hard is guaranteeing the quality of server you are transfering to. After your next free transfer, you will not have a 2nd chance again! So do your research!

European guild masters will need to decide. Do you sit there and hope that within the next 2 weeks a substantial amount of NA and Oceanic and Asians trickle in to you, or will you come to a sever that is only lacking Europeans and make a difference immediately.

There is no right answer, but some answers lead to better results than others

Sea of Sorrows has traveled a long road up to this point. We’ve had multiple matches with close calls as we climbed the WvW ladder to the very top rung. And there we’ve sat, at the top of Tier 1, for a solid five weeks thus far. No single guild is responsible for our success. We did this through community, hunger for competition, and most importantly, server wide organization. Sea of Sorrows is looking for like minded guilds who are interested in coordination on a higher level of play.

Strong NA and Oceanic Coverage: While we certainly have holes in coverage here and there, we have arguably the strongest Australian presence in the world. That being said, we lack players during NA, SEA, and EURO time slots. Guilds like [MERC], [AFS], and [DiE] are second to none during the AUS time zones. Our NA players are mostly made up of organized guilds and about half as much Militia as the other time zones. If you’re an NA player looking for a change in scenery and high level play, Sea of Sorrows is for you.

Tight-knit Guild to Militia relationship: Our server is made up of a mix of medium to small sized guilds and dedicated militia forces. We would not be where we are without them.

No Queue times!

Responsible Guild Leaders who play to win, step up, we need you. Oceanics, Asians, Europeans need more numbers!

With the news of free transfers coming to an end on Janurary 28th, I wish to make an urgent plea to the WvW focused guilds of Europe.

1. If you are sitting in a low tier server, hoping everyday that 1000s of WvW focused players will join you. It seems very unlikely.

2. If your guild is suffering for members leaving, low representation, and difficulty to communicate, there will no longer be a large influx of players for you to recruit because there will be no sudden influx of players who bandwagon to your server, you can only grow organically from now on, much to slow for the rate players are leaving. Especially if you are low tier

3. If your members are burning out, suffering from long late night hours to play just to stay ahead, the dreams of a low cost American savior coming will soon come to an end. No one is coming to save you.

Currently, Sea of Sorrows has the best North American and Oceanic coverage, we have won 8 out of 9 Tier 1 weeks, the longest winning Tier 1 Champion in North America WvW. But it is NOT ENOUGH. Currently we are holding under 50 ppt in all empty boarderlands during European prime times. Often, Oceanic members need to stay up until 5am or Americans need to skip school and work to play in the afternoons to hold it.

We realize this is not sustainable.
We realize that Europeans are facing the same problem.
We need Europeans to watch our backs!

Why don’t I transfer to a low tier server and work my way up?
The next transfer you make is going to be the last free transfer ever. Do you want to transfer to an unproven server, where you risk the WvW alliance falling apart due to consistent under performance? Or, will you for the sake of your guild members come to the server who has proven to be number 1 time and again through hard work, mature community and capable strategies?

SOS has worked their way up. We understand that you may think working your way up from beaten dog to top dog is a very romantic notion. But trust us, T1 survival is no laughing matter, 24/7 coverage is only the beginning. If you cannot guarantee that, you should not think about other issues. We have seen time and again servers who enter tier 1, fail, and completely fall apart because of the shear hopelessness they feel.

It’s always full
Please contact myself or this forum via in-game mail or private message and I will help to administer a very success transfer for you. We will provide the man power and administrative tools to help your transfer succeed. SOS has experience doing this, we have transferred over 1000 WvW players within 2 days to our seemingly “full” server before.

I don’t want to be labelled as a Bandwagoner
1. No server is a pure virgin anymore, even I, a native of SOS since Aug 25 2013, is often labelled as a “bandwagoner”. I take it with a smile. A winning smile.

2. Bandwagoner is just an insult, smack talk in a WvW environment. It is very similar to “your server is cheating” “your server is hacking” “your server is 2v1ing” “you server has spies” “you server is full of BANDWAGONERS” – What type of people have to resort to name calling? Losers who can’t win on the battlefield. Do you care about them?

3. Another name for people who change server to better WvW communities are: Responsible Guild Leaders who look out for the sustainable development of their guild and members. Do you want your members to keep suffering as losing martyrs? Or ride together into victory?

Lag is an issue
It is not, it has been proven time and again. No one has ever complained about lag. If you are worried about the issue of lag, please contact us and we will organize a way for you to test it first hand.

I can’t recruit anyone in NA
Very wrong. SOS actually has a reasonable amount of players during European times, but they have no leaders. As long as they have no leaders, we fear that eventually they will just up and leave. Be that leader, show them the way. You can probably double your member pool just by popping into our Euro Time Zone right now and picking up the stragglers.

Europeans, the time is now. Please, think about the future of your guild members. Do they want to play 10 hours a day only to lose because of lack of coverage? Don’t just just any server, your members deserve to be part of the best. Think of your children, your wife, your girlfriend, your career. Do they deserve to suffer because your server has no coverage and you need to pull extra hours every night to play? Now is the time the make the change.

It is easy to motivate people to show up in wvw when the server has an influx of wvw-oriented guild transfers. Guilds like AGG and DIE who transferred to Sos only play gw2 for the wvw aspect of the game, so it is not difficult to get them to show up in wvw. If Sos did not have these transfers and was still able to get their massive force from just their native players, then they can make the claim that they are better than other servers at getting PVE players to show up in wvw.

If SOS didn’t have guilds like AGG and DiE we would still be in tier 5. What’s your point?

No server is pure virgin anymore.

I remember a conversation I had with one MERC members before when we first entered tier 1.

Member: “Screw this, I’ve been here for over an hour and we haven’t made any progress!”
Me: “Progress? This is tier 1 son, you expect to be taking enemy garrison every 30 minutes? We’re lucky to be holding onto our T3 Bay.”

From what I have read on the forums, BG mindset is not ready for this yet. Your players need to think like tier 1.

When WM was still around, do you know how many portal and siege I had to build to move between the road from NE Bay and SW Garrison? My personal record was 6 portal bombs and over 10 pieces of arrow carts and ballistics to advance forward in open field combat! It wasn’t even a culling issue, everyone was already rendered, I just needed to move forward and walking wasn’t an option. And guess what? WM still held garrison!

I’m sorry to say but SOS and JQ have not even brought their A game. And this I am really worried about. At this rate, SOS Oceanics and Asians will start to think WvW is about farming easy karma. We will get fat and lazy.

The commander of Asian MERC players, who does not visit this English forum, would like to say something about the current situation and has asked me to pass on the message:

“It is so unfair to say that we are 2v1ing BG. I spent whole night fighting only JQ yesterday! BG had less than 40 PPT the whole time and was outmanned everywhere. Please stop making these false accusations. BG please start fighting!”
