Phantasm Haste still bugged

I think it was mentioned a long time ago that certain phantasms don’t receive the benefit. disenchanter, defender, and swordsman were i think the 3 that they said wouldn’t be affected.

I remember bug notes saying that those were the ones that weren’t affected before (that we discovered, not ANet), but I don’t remember them ever saying “This trait that says it affects Phantasms will not affect your Phantasms”.

iWarden and iMage are also not currently affected. Can someone test Berserker for me? I’m running a little late and need to hop in the shower.

I’d actually feel better going alongside Destiny’s Edge here (and I freaking hate Logan, so yeah).

First: They have faults, they’re not perfectly boring characters.
Two: They’re Paragons of each race, and already have “real” fame. People would rally behind them.
Three: EVERY player is introduced to one of them right from the getgo. You start doing dungeons, and you’re piecing together the group as a whole, getting them to be one unit.

If Destiny’s Edge was calling the shots, seeing as, y’know, already dedicated heroes, it wouldn’t be so bad to be the sixth member, the “New guy” sidekick, because we’re already invested into this group.

If this nobody scholar who has never seen a battlefield before in his life shows up later, to “cleanse Orr” as a side thing, or becomes effectively the seventh member, that would work too. But as it was written? Ugh. It’s pretty much a Richard Knaak novel. Any Richard Knaak novel.

Kelesti.2458

I understand the lack of ability to really make it a “I go where I want” open world and “personal” story. I get it, I really do.

When we join an Order for a way to fight a dragon, we see the strengths and weaknesses of all three, we’re tested and we find the one we like the most, the one we agree with. We join, we do two whole missions of significance, and then we go to Claw Island, after which it doesn’t matter which Order we joined. Because it’s Trahearne’s story.

A character that no one outside of a Sylvari with a single specific start up even knows who he is. Rescuing my human sister, or rebuilding my charr’s warband? Completely irrelevant. That we rose through the Priory, or poor poor Tybalt, nope. Trahearne’s got a legendary sword for some reason, he’s the only one who can wield it for some reason, and that’s all that matters.

As soon as he’s entered the story line (or re-entered) everything of value in your personal story has been swept aside. It’s not Destiny’s Edge (whom we’ve been trying to rebuild, and working so freaking hard to do so). It’s not the overarching story of events told through the zones themselves and what’s going on in them. No, this is our PERSONAL story.

And that sucks kittens.

Backstab thieves are a problem? I just parry it (painfully to them), immobilize them when they pop out of stealth, and burn them down. It’s an amusing build, for sure, but as a non-thief, I haven’t really died to this unless I was already on the losing end of a 1v3 and unable to use my defensives.

Backstab itself isn’t really a problem, it’s people being morons who fail to adapt to what the game asks of them that are the problem. That, and the same morons wear 0-toughness gear.

I really miss my dual pistol mesmer from the beta test. I was in love with that play style, and when the head-start happened and I couldn’t do that anymore I was pretty bummed, I hope in the future they re-enable that option it looked really neat, did good DPS, and was honestly the most fun I had in the game. It’s unfortunate that GW2 takes place in this industrial era and all we can use is an off-hand pistol, which is a pretty weak option anyway IMO.

Mesmers could never dual pistol. You’re confusing it with Thief, and the fact the offhand duelist Phantasm dual wields (spamming a Thief skill). It wasn’t disabled, it was just never there to begin with.

Kelesti.2458

The Warden only does damage if something walks into it. Seeing as it thinks it has scepter range, but doesn’t, really is not helping its cause.

I’d run Sword/Sword (or in your case, Sword/Pistol) for the increased offensive pressure that can be used on the move. Duelist’s burst can force early dodges, leaving would-be attackers open to other things, and it hurts quite a bit on its own right. For Movement, yeah sure no Swiftness sucks, but Blink remedies a bit of that on its own.

If you’re running with the zerg, it doesn’t matter which one you’re using, but if you’re a striker, a scout, a caravan escort, a camp defender, etc, anything that would put you (and maybe 1-2 others) against a single or a few small opponents, especially with lots of room to move around in, the Warden falls short. The Pistol (or Sword) Phantasms don’t, and the additional skill offers much better control (or survivability, lol backstab thieves eating riposte every single time).

What does Illusionary Invigoration have to do with anything? By 0:07 neither he nor his opponent were reduced to 50% health and none of his shatters are on cooldown yet his opponent is at 75% HP. Even if he were reduced to 50% HP the shatter ability should’ve briefly appeared on cooldown. Furthermore, his opponent is reduced to 50% hp moments later yet never once does a single one of his shatters appear on cooldown.
I don’t know what game you’re playing but my shatters go on cooldown immediately the moment I press the button.

That very first fight? Let’s take a look.

I’m seeing Guardian standing in Chaos Storn. Check.
Chaos Armor up and the Guardian hitting it. Check.
Chaos Storm giving a Block so the Guardian did absolutely no damage.
A burn ticked for its full short duration, but that lead into a Poison, Confusion, Two Stacks of Bleed, and a Blind being up when the Warlock had its single attack going off before it died.

The fact that the Guardian stood right there and tried to beat through both Chaos Armor and Chaos Storm at the same time is what got him killed more than anything (gg Warlock).

As far as what happens with his shatters, he uses them in the final push (coupled with Blurred Frenzy) to finish him off, drops down below 50% and he ends the fight with them back up. The Guardian in question here has a smaller healthpool than I would expect, even from their already lower base health profession (also a little low on toughness?), but the fact he stood there swinging is why he lost the fight.

This guardian stood in Chaos Storm the entire duration, had burning eating away at him from Winds of Chaos, stacks of Confusion from hitting a person with Chaos Armor. Weapon Swap, Illusionary Leap. Swap for the Immobilize, Mind Wrack (one more stack of Confusion too) and Blurred Frenzy on his planted butt. Then Mirror Images – > Cry of Frustration for a little bit more confusion/burst damage and finish the job.

You’re seeing no shatters being used because he has the passive trait that refreshes the cooldown on them at 50% health (on a 90 second cooldown). But they are being used.

Have to say, halfway through with the Blurred Frenzy ignoring Sanctuary’s “GTFO”, I smiled pretty wide on that.

They do, depending on traits.
There are a billions of traits littered throughout all lines that give bonus effects for shatters — Might, Vuln, Heal, condition removal, Confusion, boon strip, zzz.

And that’s ignoring what I said, but thanks again for trying, Easy.

Each and every single one of those effects are granted by shattering clones already. The game does not differentiate between a 0 damage low health duplicate, or the hard hitting and useful Phatasms, and because of such it feels unrewarding.

If shattering a Phantasm rewarded you beyond what shattering a dodge-roll or scepter clone does, for giving up more than a clone, it wouldn’t be such a disconnect. Or are we going to play this game, Easy?

As an extension, Zaxares, buff the Phantasm health (and to a lesser extent, damage) but limit them to one at a time, seperately from the three clones (which persist through death, but Phantasm does not). A Mesmer has one Phantasm out for their damage and support granted to them, but it doesn’t refrain them from using the button.

As an aside, under this, Phantasms could be shatterable, so long as they gave damage and something else. For example, shattering Defender gives Protection (on top of Mind Wrack or Distortion or whichever Shatter you used), and Swordsman would give single target burst stacks of Vulnerability. Repeat as you see fit.

With the limited number of Phantasms, you don’t have to wait until 2-3 for your damage to be rolling. Bolstering it is still an option through traits, but you still gain benefit if you have to Shatter it. And counter to that, for those that play minion bomber and clone spam pretty much anything, it means that having a Phantasm up isn’t just so you can have a third clone for that Mind Wrack, but that you’re breaking it to get something on top of it.

It limits the wind-up problem that Mesmers have in Dynamic Events, or even any Boss/Champion with any AoE. Not buffing their damage (more than a little) will also put more damage back into the Mesmer’s active skills rather than set/forget Legion builds or hoping to make up for it by Mind Wracking on cooldown.

But most importantly, it brings Shatters and Phantasms into the Profession together, rather than working against eachother. They need to feel part of the same toolkit, and right now that’s seriously lacking.

Was this changed?

Auto-attack? On or Off for PvP/PvE

Pro’s: You don’t have to spam the button, leaving your fingers free to have movement much easier without handcramps.
Pro: You don’t miss any times when you should be attacking but aren’t.

Cons: Someone pulls out a skill block (Riposte) or reflect skill, you hurt yourself.
A bunch of stacks of Confusion are on you, or Retaliation is on your target. Possibly both. You’re killing yourself by auto-attacking.

It’d be good if one could stop attacking, without disabling auto-attack (i.e. having it turned on, and already attacking, pushing the button again would just stop swinging). But as of this point, if you want to be doing high level PvP play (these are the situations where it comes up more than PvE), turn it off and find keybinds that don’t restrict your movement or give you handcramps to spam it.

How to build for WvW?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Kelesti.2458

Kelesti.2458

Full Knight’s gear, Emerald jewelry, Earth runes. Sword/Sword→Staff, going 0/20/20/20/10 (or some variation thereof).

Keep the pain and pressure going in 1v1 or 1v2 scenarios, if you’re part of your zerg swap in Time Warp (or Mass Invis for giggles), if you’re skirmishing Moa shines. The point of all that toughness is: You have Condition Removal, and quite a fair bit of it. You have a decently sized base health pool, so the things that are going to hurt you are direct damage, and Toughness just soaks that up.

Swap to Staff when you need to play defensively. Chaos Storm→ Phase Retreat for your first Chaos Armor, creates added pressure of the Storm for more damage, more debuffs, and they don’t want to stand in it. Find more Combo fields to keep it up. Decent build, some good reflexes, and kitten good kiting, and even the zerg will have a pain in the kitten killing you.

But the Knight’s build (Power/Precision/Toughness) still gives you that offensive presence (especially with sword/X) rather than putting too too much into defensive stats.

Mesmer can't AoE?

Kelesti.2458

Blurred Frenzy is multi target. The 1-chain of the sword cleaves like someone needing kitty-nip. Mirror Images → Mind Wrack is some minor burst AoE (as well as propping up consistent AoE with the dodge→ clone trait). And then there’s Chaos Storm’s AoE, too.

Berserker, while nice, tends to die too fast for the one thing it’s really really good for (cleaving down a ridiculous amount of low health targets), because… it’s tied to a low health target. The others will never really compare to say an Elementalist, or a Necromancer’s wells, but they’re something at least.

I personally like Chaos Storm the most, not because I feel it does the most damage, but because it’s not target limited, and it offers combo field usage and other residual effects.

It fails to do anything at all because you started it just outside of its active range. It doesn’t matter where you are when the cast finishes, if you weren’t in range when you started, it’s going to fail (at least for this one).

As far as the clone stopping halfway, this is something I’m seeing only somewhat recently, but I suppose it’s been here awhile. I think it has something to do with how they handle terrain. Even ground and uphill seems to work just fine, but downhill not so much

thinking of strictly clones.

Yeah, they’re our main survival mechanic (and giving them up to shatter is intended to be our primary profession mechanic in general?). Having them linked to target and die seems a little… short-sighted.

I get the whole “Phantasms are hexes made real” thing, and they’re intended to rip into a target and punish it hard before it goes. Those disappearing when a target dies is fine (even though I get sad when Berserker disappears, all that AoE!). But clones? Especially since the balance to drop their damage to (almost) 0?

Scepter #2...make a phantasm?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Kelesti.2458

Kelesti.2458

Scepter block creating a Phantasm gives the problem that Phantasms are off-hand spawned. Having three seperate damaging Phantasms available on a single weapon swap is a little lopsided.

That said, considering how hard both the Scepter and the Sword-Offhand blocks hit, I’m not sure it needs a Phantasm.

Problems with Scepter: It lacks Confusion in the 1-chain (which was originally put up there to compensate for its lower damage, removed early on in beta because “conditions are OP I don’t bring removal but I die FIX PLZ ANET”). It spawns clones in melee. And the attack speed it has in melee should be the same attack speed it has at range. Fix these, and the weapon starts to feel a little more whole again.

The Charr deny human gods as gods. They’re powerful entities. So is Baelfire. Titans. Destroyers. Powerful with “magical effects” donn’t make it a “God” to the charr. They don’t worship them, they see them as something to take down, to beat, to kill.

The Charr have no gods. They don’t say Balthazar never existed. They say he was never a true-god or something to worship, and if he ever exerted force over Charr they would kill him (or die trying).

That’s not agnostic. That’s not “accepting them as a god, even if they don’t believe in him”. That’s antitheist from the get-go.

It’s not bypassing keep walls that’s the problem, it’s that the world wasn’t designed with this sort of motion in mind and that’s why Staff Mesmers are constantly falling through the world and being unable to do anything about it.

The problem I have with the iSwordsman is he doesn’t get much out of Sharper Images (and sword is in the Precision line where you get the most out of it). Warden, Berserker, and Duelist all hit pretty hard as well but get nice bleed stacks on top of it.

The Bleed stacks from Duelist add up to nice burst added pressure, yes, but then there’s so much downtime that they fall off. Give the Swordsman Phantasmal Fury (assuming they actually fix it of course), and its bleeds feel more sustained pressure on top of the already harder hitting single strikes.

You don’t need to have 4 stacks at once, nothing later, nothing later, and then another 4 stacks to get use out of the trait. Maintaining single stacks does the same damage, just sustained rather than burst. When you compare the two (Duellist’s inherent burst nature) it’s not really that Swordsman doesn’t get much, it’s that it’s not as in your face.

But illusions don’t have to be in your face about everything they do. That’s part of what it is to be a mesmer, subtlety.

Uhh, no. We’d be hating Jennah for putting herself behind enemy lines in the middle of a seige. The conclusion of her death from a seige by someone NOT the Charr doesn’t resolve her consequences of being there, in a war zone.

And even after Kralkatorrik was up, the Charr and Humanity kept fighting at Ebonhawke. There was the desire, the need for peace, sure, but it wasn’t going to happen for those kittens. That’s why the newly created Vigil with Almorra brought Dougal and Ember together to get the Claw of the Khan-Ur.

Logan didn’t do peace. The Charr were fighting for survival and went back to trying to kill humans afterwards. Ebonhawke itself felt the exact same way, and despite the brand, despite the onslaught, the siege and the war continued until the treaty could be signed, which had less reason for the few Charr that Logan fought beside, and more because of pressure from Almorra as a sole survivor of her warband reaching cross-legion and cross-race.

Nope. Dougal and Ember did more for that, under Almorra’s suggestion than Rytlock and Logan ever could have.

Can I just, y’know, adopt Dougal Keane as my racial hero? Adept at his profession, when he ran it was for the right reasons, and when it came to a (secondary) love interest and even his own Ascalonian prejudice, he acted in the betterment of everyone rather than just himself.

Flawed, absolutely, but everything he did never left someone scratching their heads going “uhh… what?” like BFFs with a Charr by overcoming 250 years of racial hatred in only a page and a half… lolwut (not to mention the entirety of the Jenna storyline).

Moa is fine in sPvP because in that you’re expected to actually be watching your opponents, and counter their moves. If they’re running Moa they aren’t running another elite, and it’s easy to counter so there’s nothing to worry about.

Moa in dungeons is weak because dungeons de-emphasize effects like this for a reason. Moa in WvW is probably where it shines the best when being a scout/harassment solo striker, it lets you hold off one attacker while you work on another. Of course, does nothing to the zerg, but most things don’t. Open field removes Line of Sight, but people there don’t seem to have an issue dodging it either.

It shines in different areas of the game (as do most elites, most utilities, etc), but generally speaking it’s fine where it is. I wouldn’t want to see it buffed anymore than I would want to see it nerfed.

Personally, I found great synergy with the staff and the one-handed sword, by treating them both like Power Weapons. I use the Sword primarily, and swap to my staff when I need to drop Chaos Storm or Chaos Armor (or chain Chaos Armor on myself via all the combo fields).

If I get a second or two of burning, great. But that alone isn’t really worth gearing for Condition Damage.

5. 2vs2 or 3vs3 fights can be decided on the factor that the moa bird will be stunlocked and beat to death, i’ve seen it happen a lot. once one player is down, good luck winning a 3vs2.

Actually, 2v2 or 3v3 turns it into a 3v2 without killing the Moa. That’s where it’s strong. It removes the Moa from the fight while they focus someone else entirely. This is what makes the skill strong, not a 1v1 type of equal footing and “all of a sudden I died and not because I was outplayed”

What Moa does

You forgot this:
6. Is easily telegraphed and easily dodged, wasting the three minute cooldown entirely.

1vs1:
You are approaching a mesmer who is defending the trebuchet, for instance, and you want to kill him and then destroy the trebuchet.
You are playing as better as you can, killing clones the mesmer is spamming, dodging, stunlocking and so on, you may also have casted your elite skill in order to win the battle. Now, let’s suppose the Mesmer we are against is quite bad and his life bar is less than half and your is above half.
Now, the mesmer have realized he is in disadvantage and he uses Decoy and casts Moa Morph. You, because aren’t a perfect player, become a shiny Moa.

Following you so far…

You start to run and run, wasting all your dodges, in the meantime, the mesmer is spamming all his skill randomly and we assume that at least 8k damage is dealt (just 1 illusionary unload plus some attack of the warlock).

Found your problems. Two of them. You left the Duelist up while the Mesmer was stealthed. Even without the rest of this situation, if you’d have got the Mesmer down, the Duelist would have taken you with it. Second is the wasted dodges. Primary escape mechanic is running, run away. Run run run. If you’re running, you’re outranging the Unload. Only time this isn’t true is if they spent 2 seconds of your 10 second daze casting it. In which case you dodge. In fact, if they’re pistol, the two pistol skills are pretty much the only thing you need to dodge (Magic Bullet and the Unload from the Duelist). Or you’re Line of Sighting it, drop down the hill and gtfo.

But they won’t catch up to you. Mesmers have no passive speed increase, they’d have to weapon swap to a Focus for reliable swiftness. Which means that they won’t have their pistol anymore for a stun.

And while they’re chasing you off into the middle of nowhere where you’re taking no damage, no one is firing the Trebuchet, no one is defending it.

Edit: Or what EasymodeX said.

Swordsman. Not only is he consistently moving out of melee range, but both before and after his attack he’s actually evading. He hits hard (unlike the Mage), he’s mobile (unlike Warden and Duelist), and he’s survivable.

I would love the Berserker more if the situations I wanted to use it in (AoE) didn’t get it killed immediately because its target splatted.

You could always try dodging the stun that you know is coming after Moa.

Sidenote: This is highly inefficient since Moa already dazes, effectively. Half the stun is wasted. How silly.

The last time I was Moa’d (and it’s been a long time since that happened), I just ran away immediately, threw a dodge. I basically took about 1000 damage. Zzzz.

I’m actually agreeing with EasymodeX? What the hell, man?
