The point was to create a charac earlier so that I could do some stuff before beta starts across my characters- I would need the things I stuffed in the bank for that. But I’ll deal, there’s nothing else about it. Thanks thO!
That’s a crying shame, I already unequipped all my equipment and stuff over 5 characters to stuff in the bank
So I’ve bought HoT last week, and wanted to create a revenant beta character today in prep for the bwe. But the option is greyed out in the CC. And it says upgrade to HoT to unlock the revenant profession when i hover over it. Is this a bug? Or is it because I can only create in during the bwe event
One iteration would be that they introduced professions they thought would need the most feedback, leaving the ones that didn’t for last because they’re incredibly sure they did good with those.
haha…good one but they don’t exactly have a good track record for being competent at ranger design. Engineer and Ranger preview images announced with HOT were probably chosen to reverse psych us that things were gonna be okay. It wouldn’t do if they released only guardian, ele and mesmer preview pictures at launch, and then proceed to reveal their specializations first. They had to keep us hoping with the early reveal..
I’m hopeful because reaper was actually pretty interesting, but druid just…fails to inspire anything at all.. Given how good the DD spec is, they should have just left that to the last bwe. Because all it needs is just a tuning of numbers, as opposed to what making druid viable would require
Sincerely,
Embittered & Extremely Sore Ranger
P.S I would eat my hat, socks, shirt and underwear to be wrong. PLEASE let me be wrong
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
Correct me if I’m wrong, but what I’m getting from what you’re saying is that the meta now is so bursty that unless you build for outright survivability, and EVEN THEN , you’ll still get hit by huge bursts till you die?
Lets compare my build to a “proper” shoutbow build found in the build thread,
My build would compare as such:
2510 vs 2356 power
42% vs 38% crit chance
207 % vs 199% crit damge
2.7k vs 2.2k armor
183 vs 197 hp/sec regen
What you’re saying that 500 difference in armor isn’t worth nuts when holding up to bursts, so might as well just put more in your damage output? That’s sort of depressing that build variety is so limited ….
Anyway point taken, thanks for taking the time to explain
Thanks for all your feedback, I’ve taken into account what you’ve said about excessive healing power and toughness- its too selfish and too much of a safety net.
One thing I feel I ought to explain is that I NEVER stick to just a set of utilities. For healing I switch between heal as one/troll as needed in pve/wvw. The same goes for utilities.
For example, in Mai Fight, I’ll roll with more condi cleanse w/more survival skills etc. Same in WvW. Mostly every other dungeon encounter is a matter of pure dps. Those are the times I’ll run skirmishing lines with quickdraw and spotter, with fire trap/sic’em/Frost. Fire trap lets me contribute group blasts with call of the wild on pet swap.
@Puck My utilities are never constant, as I mention above. I’m not particularly fond of trooper runes to be honest, I prefer defender runes, where the benefits feel more material with the heal on block and aegis from heal.
@Raven Utilities, always in flux with what the situation demands You make a good point with the damage output and over-commitment on healing power. I disagree with condi removal, I have condi removal on all my survival skills, with my pet taking disables for me- and to be honest, with the state of condi in our current meta, we can never have enough condi cleanse to fight condi bombs completely. I could run -condi reduc food i guess
@Tragic I did, and I did some tweaking, and this is what I came up with. Why doesn’t it survive bursts? I have high armor < 2700, condi removal through pets and utilities, and endless regen uptime. Bark Skin will also ensure I’ll never get burst from 100% to 0.
So after some tweaking, here are 2 builds..
The first one, for wvw roaming
Endless Regen and high swiftness uptime. Quickdraw helps with dps output. Condi cleanse available on demand, with lemongrass to reduce duration. Taunt on F2 helps kitten with people.
2.28k Power, 60% crit w/ fury, 195% crit damage, 197hp/s , 2.7k armor.
Pets would be dual canines or canine/bird. Entangle/RaO.
General PvE (Fractitilating Fractals!)
Swapping out Wilderness for MM traitline for dps output. Utilities are Fire Trap for might blast on pet swap/QZ/Frost . Might on crit w/ food.
2.28k Power, 60% crit w/ fury, 200% crit damage, 197hp/s , 2.7k armor.

So I’ve recently come back after a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG break. Glad to see the ranger has been buffed slightly! Though I see pets are still kinda eh.
One thing I’ve noticed is that our damage has since been scaled up a little- so I messed around with the build editor to come up with a shout-ranger that can output decent damage while being survivable. Another aim of this build was for it to be viable in pve/wvw roaming without needing to swap out any armor pieces- just swapping out traitlines as needed. (I.E W/S for Marksman/BM) This is mainly because I simply don’t have the time to procure different sets of gear for different content.
Traits: Skirm/WS/BM. Trait setup allows me to set-up burst and consistent damage w/ Quickdraw. Condi-clear via WS . And finally BM allows me to keep up group play in wvw/pve w/ the constant regen. On a selfish note, 5% damage reduc with regen from WS helps!
Gear: Its a mixture of Cleric/Valk/Cav/Bersk gear. The point of all this min-maxing was to achieve good damage while being able to sustain myself through regen and toughness. I figured 900ish Healing power would allow me to constantly regen 247hp/s. Defender runes help me with sustain while allowing me to keep more offensive gear.
Weapons : GS and S/A. Swap in Longbow as and when the situation calls for it. Sword has 7% accuracy sigil as its more of a dps weapon rather then burst. Sigil of Intelligence allows for guaranteed burst on hard hitting skills like maul and axe #4. A typical rotation would look like Sword AA->Maul Crit + AA ->Axe #4 crit and repeat. Fill CDs waiting times with AA/other wep skills.
Food: Kralk Bar allows me to reach the desired regen values.
Please help me out by critiquing this build! I live on criticism. Appreciate it immensely

I do it all!
All types! mostly pvewvw though.
Been on a bit of a hiatus because of RL stuff- but I recently had some time freed up for some ME time again-
Basically, how’s the ranger as a profession doing now? Did we get any dev love?
Do we need the new ascended shinies? Does the new content shove us in a corner?
And…
Does my old build still work? Or is there now a new ranger meta? Thanks a lot

I opened a thread specifically for this, hope it helps!
P.S you have to eat the meat to give yourself a damage boost that is necessary for killing Chomper quickly. If you eat 4 meats consecutively, all the while plonking and ccing chomper, thereby preventing from eating meat, he should be dead around the 4th-6th meat. Also, Bring wolves. Alternate them when their skills are on CD. Helped me loads.
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
Managed it. Thanks Durzilla for the build, as well as all the rest of you for your advice. What I can say is, it was more of a l2p thing at the end after nailing down a semi-burst build. Send Wolves in, swap regularly, stay near the norndimbulb. spam your muddy terrain and blah after the first meat.I usually activate RaO after the second meat. In between meats, always keep up the LB/GS spam, but save your cripple/daze/knockback. QZ is good for LB 2# and 5#. I killed the dog after my 6th stack of meatroids.
…Been getting close, still not quite there yet. He always manages to throw one meat lump right underneath the dog.
:(
- Also to clarifier- What I have difficulty with is the achievement whereby you not let the dog eat ANY meat at all. No problems beating him- Have problems beating him with said criteria
One way I think I might beat this would be to carry the meat stacks over to a second round- then just burst the mutt from the start- It would require no one else to be queued for it though
@ Durzlla Might I inquire of your gear setup you used? It’d be much appreciated, though I guess its probably magi/cleric etc ? I’m using Puandro’s , a 0/15/20/15/20 setup- though instead of cleric trinkets I’m using a mix of berserker’s cavaliers.
Figured a thread like this needed to be done – One issue I’m having is the meatless murderer achievement- Having great difficulty with this one. Any rangers out there that’ve done this and care to share?
To elaborate: Because 40% of our damage is in pets, I can’t kill the god kitten mutt fast enough even with 4 stacks of meat.
If this was a pvp setup scenario with instant level 80 and gear I’d just roll my warrior and beat the kitten out of the kitten dog .
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
Having great difficulty doing this as a ranger, and the one time where i manage to deny him the meat as a ranger, I don’t get the achievement ? Rather vein-popping stuff
Where does thou find this hobo tron?
What is this you speaketh of?
@ Puandro
1) :O phoo! Didn’t know that! I guess I’ll go for bloodlust stacks then.
2) Good Point! I forgot that I don’t have as much healing power anymore, at 800 HP 10%’s only a 80 power boost.
3) Tweaked the build based on ascended trinkets and trait change as per suggestion – http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/ranger/?6.0|1.1k.h1h|c.1k.h4.g.1k.h1j|1k.71h.1k.71h.1k.71d.1k.71d.1k.71d.1k.71d|3s.0.2v.0.2s.0.2s.0.3s.0.3v.0|0.f6.k00.f3.k57|15.7|4i.4w.4o.4r.55|e
End result: 6% more critical damage , 10 more healing power, 50 more CondDmage(lol) , 30 more armor for a loss of 52 power, .24% critical chance. Not bad! It saves me from using my badge treasure hoard- now I can hoard them for my alts lol. On the bad side it’ll deplete my laurel reserve xd Wish I hadn’t gotten the bottom row cleric trinkets now heh
4) I dunno, is it? I’ve only come onto forums thus far to ask for build tweaking advice- The build itself is something me and a few buddies came up with – maybe some of them got it from you? I was running the standard 30/30/30 bunker before getting kitten ed off with my pet lol. I felt rather useless when my pet died. Switched to 15/15/15/30 , but still felt kinda lacking damage wise. Asked my mighty ranger squad for help- And thus that’s how i reached this point. Kudos to you if your build inspired my friends to help form this current version of my build though!
@Chopps stability and growing larger? Hmmm. I dunno man, it’d be great to use if I traited for it, but I don’t
Thanks for all the opinions! Once I gather enough feedback from this discussion- I’m probably gonna make this my permanent set for everything – unless areanet balance team decides to nerf pet damage again- I’ll just go knight’s gear/cavalier trinkets at that point
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
Bumpity Bump ;V
This is what I settled on in the end. What’d you guys think?
Bumpity bump :S
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
I’m going for a Knight’s- Cleric -Berserk mix- i would go calvary instead of knight’s, but fractal rng hasn’t been too kind to me. My current setup is full cleric’s at about 1300 Healing Power , but as pet a.i hasn’t really grown on me yet, I’m switching out some survivability pieces for personal damage without giving up toughness. Afterall, toughness is what keeps you going when you can’t dodge /are unable to. Keep the opinions coming, its helps!
yea, 600 healing power nets you 98 HP/SEC. 650 nets ya 101. Regeneration boons also give me 205 hp/sec at 600 HP vs 280 hp/sec at 1200 HP.That’s probably what I’ll go for if I don’t get a good set of opinions by the end of this discussion
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
As the Topic states, what’s the bare minimum healing power for SOTW to be effective? I understand that there’s no right answer, but I’d just like to get some opinions.
Currently still working out the kinks in my gear setup, so thanks in advance.
Yea, I agree- I think the brisban WIldlands one is bugged- The one at the skritt kingdom at any rate. Dive clothes won’t come off.
Yep I went through it again, going against better judgement. No change.
Its good to know that I’m not the only one with this problem- and I don’t mean happiness in the shared misery- We need to bring this to Anet’s attention. I’ve reported this many times :V. I just went around a full dive master location circle- and yep, still 36/38. I’ve done all the new ones, not so secret, best dive ever etc. I loved the zephyr sanctum one btw. Please anet, halp us! I’d have thought you would have implemented a better tracking system when you said you would- Now its just shinier, but not much more useful
Bump because the patch did nothing.. I’m sure I can’t be the only one with this issue!
LAG MEISTER 2000
@hyjaxxx
No offense, but what Manekk said. I do like your condition version though! Its probably what I’ll gear for when I get my alternate condition set.
@ Aphoticrain Already starting to save up my pvp badges for a apoth set- I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have one on hand anyway. Maybe I’ll spend some gold and karka shells on the sets at southsun- its barely open on TC though. I think I’ll get a set for set for that snazzy 10k autoattack build some ranger was nice enough to share too
@ Manekk
Yea, that RaO trick is something I usually use when I’m running it as my elite- pretty snazzy to get 25 stacks in 3 seconds- 2 if I’m on sword and it connects
Sigils: Won’t they share CD or something?
Runes: Alright, that sounds promising
Foods: I forgot to mention, but I use the2s cheaper version of that soup- Poultry and Leek! 36% for measly 2 silver. When I’m not, though, I run kralk bars. Maintenance Oil is indeed what I’m using atm
Traits: That’s the thing though, 25 was more the healing -> power conversion. Going into 20 does boost my crit by 5% with a snazzy on crit might for my pet..but.. well I’ll give it a whirl, but I honestly don’t expect much of a difference
Trinkets: Yea, twas why I held off getting my top row trinkets. How would berserkers compare in terms of damage output compared to cavalier’s toughness -> maintenance oil -> extra prec ?
Keep the advice coming guys, I really appreciate it- its definitely helping flesh out where I want my ranger to be
@ Aphoticrain I can keep perma fury and swiftness pretty much through an entire fight, yeap! By CD i meant I’m willing to try out condition builds, but I’d need to know whether they’re effective or not. From what I can see conditions at least allow me to reliably output damage, whereas my current Direct Damage setup is a bit dependent on how much cc/how good the opponent is- often I’m in scenarios where’s its miss/miss/miss/miss because he/she’s just a bit out of range. This is painfully obvious when I use the greatsword- often I find Swoop misses, and maul just can’t hit reliably
My cond damage is at 164 currently.
@ Holland 3 water was primarily for the buff to regen duration, though if I was brutally honest I would have went with monk if I didn’t dislike running dungeons so much. I did run with that for a while, but I think its more a l2p against mesmers for me – while I didn’t die, I certainly wasn’t able to say I came out on top
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
Bump, I could really use some input!
Hiya,
In a attempt to try to bring back some of the old spunk my ranger had, I’d like to ask the ranger community for some advice in optimizing my cleric build.
I’m currently on full Cleric Setup for Weapons+ Armor, whereas I’m running ascended cleric rings and a amulet. The accessories and back piece are still a WIP.
3 Dwaynas/3 Water for the armor.
I run GS and S/Warhorn, or S/Dagger depending on the mood of the day or as when some group utility is required. Axe and Longbow are in the bag as well for when melee just isn’t an option.
GS has Battle sigil, whereas my sword has Force. Warhorn/Dagger has energy sigil.
As for the traits, I run a 0/15/15/15/25 build, taking 0, I, VI, III and (V +VII) respectively.
Utilities- I usually go with whatever I need, but I usually have Wildness Signet as well as one stunbreaker active. Entangle most often as my elite.
Pets: Again, whatever the situation calls for, though, jaguar and wolf are consistent picks.
Stats are as follows:
Attack: 2760
Power:1660
CritChance: 13%
Prec: 1100
Armor: 2724
Toughness: 1660
Healing Power: 1241
Boon Duration: 30%
Crit Dmge: 17%
I struggle the most against phantasm shatter mesmers, I just can’t handle that burst rotation that’s on such short CD. Engineers on certain builds also are a pain in the behind to deal with- I rarely come out on top fighting a decently skilled engineer. Everything else is mostly either a draw or I walk away the victor.
I can’t help but feel that the fights could go a little more obviously in my favor if my personal dps was high… reason being that the pet a.i (ESPECIALLLY THE BIRRRRRRDS) can get a little hilariously bad if I don’t have a cripple/immobilize on hand.
For that reason, I’m looking for advice on how to beef up my personal damage. I don’t mind going conditions and sacrificing some healing power for damage pieces as well. I just find that my current build doesn’t give me enough oomph, and when I get caught by 3+ zerglings I’m generally dead if my stunbreaker’s on cd. In those cases, the signet regen just doesn’t seem that worth it.
Should I try going for full zerkers? lol.
Fully open to questions, criticisms, advice.
Fire away!~

Just read the pcgamer collation article about the new stuff Anet is pushing up- Something related to our issue is the "Better tracking for achievements " . Hopefully this involves the achievements that require the player to travel around Tyria. Would be nice to get a solid confirmation on this
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
I’ve run though EVERY location at least 4 times, and dived out of combat, variations of 1 -2 or 2-1 etc etc. Why is it that I simply cannot get this achievement done? Its very frustrating that the achievements cannot list which map has not met the dive master criteria. This is impeding my in-game progress, could I please get some assistance on this?
Kindly please refrain from asking me to run every single point again, I’ve already wasted more than 2 gold trying to get the achievement done. At this point I just want to see my gold spent at least be worth something. Would really appreciate areanet telling me SPECIFICALLY which map isn’t complete, or my gold returned for poor achievement tracking. I had to track using pen and paper.
Thanks.
P.s Yes, I’ve done the Not So Secret Dive Goggles. Twice

The last name sounds rather nornish! Amiri, on the other hand, is rather exotic-sounding for a Norn, which for all purposes and intents to fit her backstory of course. 9/10!
My Norn Guardian goes by Kell Oakheart. Took the name Kell, from the kitten Protagonist in the Clockwork Vampire Chronicles. (Look it up, pretty swell read. No twilight vampire bullkitten either.) Then I made him like look like techno viking :p. Pretty happy so far! Oakheart was something I needed to reference, or rather remind himself of his guardian roots I suppose.

Here to request an invite! Been playing necro since the game launched. Currently just hunting for armor pieces to make my hybrid survivability viable pvx necro. So…. Would love the expertise of all you fine gentlemen. Going for prec/tough//power/cond gear. Needing help to gather them. I’ll gladly help with whatever necro experience I can offer to ye fellow death seekers and death dealers
Character name: Carthu Duskchaser
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
I..see. So I’m a hybrid is it? I’m guessing I’m the more tanks variety though. If I follow his suggestion, I won’t be getting much toughness at all. I have a decent amount of it in my current setup, all greens..Or is the idea of his build such that he never fails a dodge etc. Cause in dungeons sometimes its all bout lasting- and that’s where the additional toughness I have comes in handy( least I hope, and its not just ,my imagination)
Edit2* So..still not much response haha.Guess people are still sleeping. Yes,nemesis does have a hybrid build, as do others in the forum. But it seems none of them are concerned with survivability? I tried to purchase my greens so that I could pull off damage while still being tanks enough. What’s missing now I think is that my armor rating isn’t high enough. Could someone give me a set/combination of armor I can use that fulfills these requirements?
Edit* Please, keep the advice coming! I really appreciate more feedback!
(edited by Legenfleet.4603)
So… hello! I’ve been playing necro for quite a while now, since the game launch actually. I’ve gone from conditionmancer, to bunkomancer, and now currently I’m not sure exactly what I am anymore.
Currently, I’m running with a Axe/Focus and Scepter/Dagger setup. My traits are
30/30/0/10/0.
Basically,
- Edit*
I swap out my wells with whatever utility I require at the moment. I go into deathshroud pretty much every encounter. I can pvp with this build too, but I’m pretty sure its only cause I’m used to it. Otherwise, would die that much more often. My playstyle basically revolves around switching my sets around whenever the skills are on cd ( and I play so they always are). I switch to deathshroud at first usually to give me that might boon, siphon health if mobs are bunched up, then switch out of DS to just work my skills. Rinse and repeat, heal when needed.
My stats are below in the picture. Still using all Greens.
My request is for some of you more experienced necros to advise me on what armour and weapons types I should purchase, whether my build sucks, etc, ADVICE ME!
*Edit 2 , silly me, scroll-over window was blocking my stats in the picture
