Here’s what I’m thinking. Somewhere in this thread there is a link from the Korean(IIRC?) securities/stock exchange which basically stated that 2 million copies of HoT have to be sold. Bundling the core game with HoT allows sales of the core game to be counted as HoT sales and vise versa which COULD NOT be done if the core game was a stand alone purchase.

That data stated what Anet would need to sell in order to meet their projected earnings. Which was 2 million sales at $50 each. Basically it’s the number of copies the firm thought Anet could push, and the price that would need to be in order to meet expectations.

Including the core game doesn’t impact the projection, it only gives the possibility to artificially inflate the number of products sold if they want to count it that way. That number isn’t all that important, as it has no impact on profits. If they were to actually count each HoT sale as 2 sales, 2 million copies would only meet 50% of their projected earnings.

But by bundling the core game, each sale is guaranteed to be a HoT sale INSTEAD of the GW2 core game standalone.

any also explain why they release new item on TP more frequently. cut of the team to develop LS. half year item. this can cut off lots of cost.

Which is why bundling the core game with HoT DOESN’T make sense.

I agree, but those 60-70% are automatic “in the bag” sales, no effort required.

All I can say is that some veterans don’t like it for whatever reason, others do, and still others don’t really care. Don’t know what the split is but it makes having any sort of decent discussion difficult.

Because IMO Anet “devalued” overnight the “value” of the core game owned by “veterans” to nothing while saying at the same time it added “value” to the deal for new players.

Good chance this is nothing more than a well disguised troll post.

My problem is the lack of communication and feedback from Anet. When it comes to launching a product of this magnitude, it’s not a good idea to keep your prospective customers in the dark ESPECIALLY when they are alarmed/concerned.

I think the pricing structure is a complete mess and not well thought of. It would be less offensive if it was something like $50 upgrade for long time supporters and $60 for the bundle.

Good point on the pricing.

You can get the exact same. A brand new account including GW2 base Game and the Expansion on top. That is the exact same a new player gets and you can too.

Having to start a brand new account, just to get the equal value for your purchase, is a penalty to most vets instead of an equal value.

The kicker and an issue I haven’t seen mentioned is my (and others) GW account is linked to my GW2 account.

It’s really simple for me. HoT might be worth $50 if included a character slot, if the best-case scenario about what might be included pans out. I know for sure I’m not going to spend $50 for what’s been shown + $10 more for a slot so I can roll a Revenant. SIMPLY. NOT. HAPPENING. No entitlement here, just an unwillingness to be fleeced.

However, if I were a new customer, heck YES I’d take the deal A-net is offering them! But, I’m not a new customer…

New customers are certainly getting a great deal. The problem is if any new players wanted to play GW2 they’d already be playing. Anet might be in for an exciting time.

This, especially in the wake of $10(ish) sales on the core GW2 game that IS NEEDED for the HoT expansion.

“Hey you didn’t buy the $10(ish) base game on sale to try out GW2 how about the $50 version!”

After reading the links here on the forums in regards to the required sales of the HoT expansion it is clear why the went the route they did.

lol, there IS no core game, show me where I can purchase a Core game..

HOT is the core game, there is no value of 2 products being purchased as one.

This is an upgrade, not an expansion. Else there would be an independent product that can be purchased with which we can expand upon.

No such product exists. Let’s try to fix this mess by shattering this obfuscating marketing illusion. Guildwars 2 version 1 has been replaced by Heart of Thorns. Heart of Thorns is the New and improved core version, it is guildwars 2 version 2.0 or guildwars 3 if that makes it more appealing. call it the life and times of wesley quaggan for all i care …but don’t call it a 2 product value because there are not 2 products versions available to be purchased on the guildwars 2 site Just heart of thorns.

Guys, the community is more toxic than it’s ever been. The cause is the price tag for HoT being more expensive than we would have originally thought and more expensive than some can afford. But please, can’t we stop with all of this threatening and hate? If you can’t afford the expansion pack, I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be mean or unsympathetic but things cost money. Gw2 has no subscription fee and this expansion pack has no doubt been a huge drain of resources for Anet. They have to get their worth out of it. Just wait until it goes on sale or save up if you really need to get it. If you don’t think 50$ is worth whatever the expansion pack contains then just wait until it goes on sale or don’t buy it. Anet has been busting their kitten to offer all of this new content to us. Can’t we all please return some respect for their providing us with years of free and enjoyable content and what will no doubt be an extremely awesome expansion pack?

Price isn’t the issue, it’s paying twice for the base game without getting the base game or compensation so Johny McNoob can get it for “FREE.”

If you have no clue read my signature, it’s Anets action on a much larger dollar scale.

The changes that happened pre Heart of Thorns is not what we are paying for in Heart of Thorns, adding that info would be irrelevant for this comparison.

In a way you do. A complete comparison of updates:

G1 + all expansions = 50+50+50+40

vs GW2 + all FREE content 50+50

Do that comparison so the price of what we got is clear

It’s meaningless to add in the FREE (that really isn’t FREE) content when looking at PAID expansions.

No but you can check how much content you got overall for what price.
GW1: 190$ for everything
GW2: 100$ for everything

Comparing content and price can lead to much more interesting conclusions. The price tag of HoT becomes much better if you think what you’ve got for free so far compared with getting nearly nothing in-between expansions.

GW1 had FREE content also.

The precedent being set is every 3 years you pay 50-ish bucks to play gw2. I see no problem with that.

It’s more along the lines of, every 3 years abandon your primary account if you want to get the same value out of the package as a new customer. Once again, I’m glad customers get the opportunity to take advantage of these types of bundles. The lower the barrier for entry to them, the better. However, I cannot, currently, purchase a product of equal value to them at this time. I have already purchased vanilla in the past, I have no use for it now, so there is no logical reason for me, and a surprisingly large number of other customers, to purchase a current bundle.

The easiest solution to this would honestly be for Anet to just separate the bundle into two codes, one for vanilla, one for HoT, as this makes no difference for new players, and gives the exact same product value of the bundle into the hands of old players. There are simple solutions to this “problem” that would appease those who are hesitant to purchase the expansion at the moment. The marketing team just needs to design logical bundles of new players and old players, and then the criticism for all of this will die down significantly. Of course it’s important to realize that even if they Anet does change something with their current bundles, it will take some time for them to do so. Change doesn’t happen overnight, if it happens at all. That being said, for those that share my opinion on the matter, we need to be patient, but at the same time not be afraid to continue voicing our opinion. Likewise, those who think the bundles are fair are free to do so as well.

We can have both “White Knights” and “Entitled Crybabies” (like me!) on this forum debating. It’s what a forum is for after all: exchanging ideas and views on relevant issues.

So how do you answer the fact that WoW is doing this very thing now? That it makes sense for a company to do. That by not doing it they’re hurting their own game, they’re hurting their bottom line and yes, they’d be hurting their veteran players?

Wow bundles all expansions except the most current one together. In order to play their most recent expansion WoD you have to buy the base game, which includes vanilla up to mop. So $19.99 + $49.99 for a brand new player. Buying warlords of draenor without the base game doesn’t do anything for you. Of course a new player could just buy the base game, but they would only be able to access content up to level 90 where the new level cap is 100.
WoD by itself doesn’t include any precious expansions or vanilla.

I’m not sure that’s true, but even if it is, a person who was there all along, who bought each expansion at the time didn’t get that deal. New players got a better deal. Because it becomes harder and harder as time goes on to attract new players.

Yeah but the old players in that WoW scenario also aren’t being given bundle options that only sell the new expansion with all previous expansions + vanilla right? They can just purchase the newest expansion released without also including the price of previous releases in the cost, correct? I’m honestly not sure, as I stated earlier I don’t anything about WoW’s business model at the moment. But if my assumptions are correct it’s not the same as what Anet’s marketing is doing right now and is actually healthier for both old and new players alike for them.

But they did pay for something other people are getting for free, which is just like this. It’s just how it’s packaged. It’s not that big a mental leap to see how it’s the same. The decide was made for the same reason at WoW. The reasoning behind the decision lends credence to the idea that maybe, just maybe, we’re not paying extra.

A WoW player who bought every expansion would have spent well over a hundred dollars that a new player isn’t going to have to spend.

Wrong you have to buy the base game like every NEW expansion WoW releases.

MMOGamer.6175

Those downvoters will buy, cry as they might.

You’re sad you don’t get a discount for owning basic? Your fallacy is in comparing the value of GW2 at release with its value today. Considering the recent $10 GW2 sale, the value of GW2 in 2015 is closer to that $10.

Should it come with a slot? Yes, no, maybe, whatever, but if the price of a slot makes you sour, you have bigger problems in life.

The true value of HOT is the new content. If we are getting the same amount of content as a season pack, then I’d be unhappy paying the price tag of a true expansion for what would just be a glorified live update patch.

Also, your buying the xpac supports the game you’ve put 1000s of hours into. You may get some of this new content for free (Tuesday’s patch), but your dollar supports it all the same.

Some of you people have 5k+ hours and you don’t want to drop $50 on the game you play every day?

That problem is exacerbated by the refund offered which includes a termination of your account and non-refund of gem purchases according to threads / screen shots on Reddit.

Come on. It’s was obvious that the core game would have an offer with HoT. Anet never say otherwise………..

Then there’s also the issue of the purchase page stating: “Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns expansion(includes Guild Wars 2 core game)”
No mention here (https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/94582027-Heart-of-Thorns-Pre-Purchase-FAQ) that this does not include a new copy of core for a returning customer.
No mention here (https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/94582027-Heart-of-Thorns-Pre-Purchase-FAQ) that this does not include a new copy of core for a returning customer.

But it’s a FREE BONUS not a purchase, kitten.

From a legal contract perspective I would change this: “Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns expansion(includes Guild Wars 2 core game)” to "Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns expansion(includes Guild Wars 2 core game for new accounts created with this purchase) [emphasis added] ASAP. Under contract ArenaNet is offering Core + Expansion to every purchaser and only delivering Expansion to existing users. This opens them up to a class action law suit in the US, probably in Europe too considering the consumer protections.

FAQ is perfectly clear: It’s include in it. They don’t change the FAQ….

to the expansion in terms of content and perceived value.

I’m sure gonna have 1K hour of content; I mean jumping mushroom, gliders, a new class that you can create once you have 140 gold.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger marketing snafu on an expansion.

I’m sure Anet will be fine. They will have ton of new players.

Hopefully, although on Day 1 in Marketing and Sales 100 you learn it’s easier to keep a customer than it is to find a new one, and they are betting the bank on market expansion in an ALREADY crowded MMORPG field.

No, this is not true. If the core game was free, it would be available for download on the website right now. It isn’t. It isn’t free. They want you to buy it (again) with HoT. Ridiculous.

If the core game was a separate serial code from HoT, or if veterans could opt to buy HoT + a character slot/fluff item/ or gems, this would not be a problem. Rebuying the core game is a problem.

I will add also that not allowing current players to get a separate key for the base game in the HoT expansion is that Anet would lose sales as players would be selling those keys on the cheap, using them or giving them away for FREE.

Just letting us have that key would have prevented a lot of the mess. I know I’d feel a lot better about it.

It would even somewhat (not completely) make up for what they did to recent customers that bought GW2 after they announced HoT. The dishonesty in the FAQ and previous ownership requirements would still stand, but it does soften the slap to the face.

At the office:
Billy McNoob: Hey MMOGamer I’ve been looking at GW2 and I know you play it, I’m not sure it’s the game for me. Should I sink $50 into this game?

MMOGamer: Oh Billy McNoob today is your lucky day! I have this extra key that came with my HoT expansion for the base game sitting at the house, I’ll bring it tomorrow for you.

Billy McNoob: Hey cool man, what you want for it?

MMOGamer: Nothing Billy McNoob it’s FREE.

There are so many haters in Gw2 community, stop complaining, it would have cost the same without the core for free for new players.

Except that would not have cost the same. It’s a value bundle, and you can be sure that Anet’s financial wizards worked hard to calculate a price they could push this bundle at to absorb the cost of the so called “free” core game. It’s the same as every buy 2, get one free deals you see in stores.

And this “deal” is even better for Anet, because not only are they selling the core game bundled to new customers at a discount, but existing customers are paying for it and not even getting it. We’re expected to just hand Anet money that that is 100% profit for them, and get a slap in the face in return.

This, mrstealth understands basic economics.

I will add also that not allowing current players to get a separate key for the base game in the HoT expansion is that Anet would lose sales as players would be selling those keys on the cheap, using them or giving them away for FREE.

Not like Anet FREE, but really FREE FREE.

That is my guess why Anet will not give separate keys, don’t expect them to admit it.

Mind your own kitten business then. People who don’t think it is worth it and who feel ripped off and who in general don’t like anets shady practices lately are voicing their opinion. If you don’t want to be told you’re wrong then stop telling people not to voice their kitten opinion as well.

You’re just playing hard to get. Either buy it, or don’t buy it. But no, you (and others) choose to whine, hoping to get something extra or just to make ANet feel bad.

Yes, I want the extra FREE base game that comes with EVERY HoT expansion that is paid for.

There are so many haters in Gw2 community, stop complaining, it would have cost the same without the core for free for new players. This community has to agree to the fact that we all win with this, we have our expansion and they have the entire game, which would increase the number of people who play it, so more money for Anet and better content in the future. I know this is difficult, but you will get over it, gokitten, Anet is doing alright, just buy it or dont if you dont want to, but dont claim more than they offer, you know where the door is. Anyway… get over this and stop complaining.

Haters?
Complaining?

What the hell guys, calm yoselves

45 euros for the xpac isn’t that much of a hastle.

We got a triple A game (try to deny me, you play it as well) for 3 years that has offered us TONS and TONS of free content post-release, a revolution in mmos and many other things, this is the only mmo i keep returning to. Now we get an xpac, and you guys freak out.

why would any of you think we won’t get another bunch of free feature packs on top of the expansions promised content? weren’t the feature packs we got enough of an example of what they will give us post HOT-release?

The only thing I can slightly understand is the hate over the “favoring” of new players (with the add of the base game to hot without adding something for vets). But I do think they will sort that out.

Please do discuss with me why you think this xpac isn’t worth the 45 euros.

How about the FREE base game copy with the HoT expansion?

I can not wait until tempers die down and we all can just enjoy HoT. Choices have been made. Some good some bad. People seem to forget how much we do get for free from Anet. Most mmo’s would charge players for 90% of the updates we have got over the past few years.

It’s not free.

Actually both players are getting the same result here. Both get the ability to create an account that includes the core game and HoT.

Technically a veteran gets something not available to a first time buyer, the option to link to an existing account instead.

So if you are in fact being offered the same result as the first tme buyer, even a bit more, what is your real complaint?

You’re technically in the wrong there, though.

Mind you, I couldn’t care less about new players and their perks, but I do care about fallacious logic.

An older player must’ve paid anywhere between $10-$60 for their account, and will need to pay an additional charge $-50 to upgrade it to GW2: HoT, so, that’s a $60-$110 expense to keep up with the changes, whereas a new player will only need $~50 for both, the standalone account and the upgrade. It would be equivalent if the older player could acquire an extra GW2 key to gift a friend or to use themselves, but that’s not the case.

Now, according to ANET, that standalone GW2 account for newcomers is just a bonus, but combined with the whole FAQ scandal, it really affects their credibility

That said, I’d like to reiterate that I don’t support either side, but that I understand from where the rage is coming from.

For the $50 price tag of HoT everyone gets an account with both core content and expansion content included. Players with existing accounts are allowed, but not required, to forgo the newly purchased account, if they so choose, in order to link to the existing account.

The price someone paid for an existing account as much as (close to) three years ago is irrelevant to what is provided in the HoT bundle. The bundle provides exactly the same for everyone, with the pfeviously mentioned exception that a veteran has an option not available to a first time buyer.

I think it is worth noting that a new account does not include something inherent to the mentioned veteran account: three years of play, past content, and accumulated rewards.

Still not buying your failed backwards thinking.

If I were to go to the website and use my credit card to purchase a copy of HoT would I or would I not get an account with both the core game and HoT included?

If a first time buyer goes to the website and purchases a copy of HoT would they or would they not get an account with both the core game and HoT included?

I already own the core. At the end of the transaction I would own a new copy of the core, linked to a new copy of HoT (exactly the same as a first time buyer) and I would also own a second copy of the core.

No you would lose the core from the HoT expansion, the core is NOT a separate key unless Anet says otherwise.

Working as Intended.

I mean is really must be difficult to program the HoT key to “see” what account you have i.e. already own GW2 base game and “add” the character slot to compensate for losing that GW2 base game key.

It’s an exclusive offer and a common practice in business.

The bank has periods of time where you can open a certain account for free, like a waterhouse account, or high savings account. Someone might have opened one a few years ago and missed that offer, but still has the same services as the person who will receive it for free today.

Between those years the person who missed the offer got to build their credit, receive interest and save their money. But the new person must start from the ground up.

This is the exact same situation here.

So tell me where the difference is.

If two people are paying for the same thing at the same time, and they are purchasing it from the same producer, they expect to get the same result.

Actually both players are getting the same result here. Both get the ability to create an account that includes the core game and HoT.

People actually “think” like this?

It is accurate.

I am not claiming that not linking accounts would be desirable for a veteran, but if he is going to argue the comparison between what first time buyers get and what veterans get then the facts dont support him.

If one claims that he doesnt feel that the value of HoT is in line with his expectations or desires then I would say kudos for being a discriminating consumer. If he is going to argue facts he should probably be factual.

No it’s not, the “old” player loses one copy of GW2 base game with zero compensation under the disguise of FREE and having no value. The GW2 base game has so little value it is actually being marketed to “new” players as a value in the HoT expansion.

We have heard, and loudly and mostly in all caps, the voices of the entitled generation, the folks who believe… actually, I dono what they believe.

Now, here is the voice of the other side, the side that feels that Anet has set a fair price. The side the believes it is not just a novel idea, but ground breaking to release an expansion with the base game (They were not first. Distant Worlds did it as well… but certainly in the MMO side I think). The side that do not feel they are being robbed because someone else is getting something they did not get (Not even sure how you logic that out). The side that supports the game and acknowledged that Anet employees do not work for charity (Gasp!).

The side that will… Buy 2 copies of HoT!

Yes, I will do that, and I will gift one copy to a friend, and bring someone into the game I would not be embarrassed to see talking in map-chat.

Cheers Anet. See you in HoT!

Grats? I ran 5 copies of GW1 with all expansions.
