QOL Suggestions - Halloween

MacChruim.1635

I like most of these suggestions, but since I (finally) started crafting Ascended items, I actually LIKED getting Empyreal Shards and Dragonite Ore from the ToT bags.

On the other hand, there are currently 5.5 MILLION plastic fangs for sale on the Trading Post at the minimum possible price, as well kitten .4 MILLION chattering skulls, 5.1 MILLION nougat centers, and 1.08 million candy corn custards. There are also a combined 2.6 million strawberry ghosts, candy corn almond brittles, glazed pear tarts, and sharpening skulls, all at the MINIMUM price!

Since all of those will probably NEVER sell at that minimum TP price, I vendored thousands of those things myself and countless other players probably did the same.

Perhaps it’s time for a.net to either reduce those drops OR find other uses for them. Candy corn is used in several recipes, and spicy pumpkin cookies are more useful than some of the other items above, so those two are still somewhat in demand and haven’t hit rock bottom prices.

Best class for level 80 boosted equipment

Awesome information — thank you very much, Nordom and EriskRedLemur!

It sounds like I had my information backwards, so I’m glad I asked here first.

If I’ll be able to use some of those “free” pieces on my guardian — occasionally mixing in a few Soldier’s armor parts or accessories with more pieces from other, more offensive sets — I’ll use the Level 80 boost on him and then use Tomes for the revenant!

Best class for level 80 boosted equipment

This seems like a straightforward sort of question, though a bit lengthy to ask in Lion’s Arch:

I have two recently created lowbies, a guardian and a revenant, and xp scrolls and Tomes of Knowledge and an HoT Level 80 Boost to get them both to level 80 quickly.

According to the GW2 wiki, the Level 80 Boost, once permanent, will provide a character with a Level-80 Equipment Package, which “Contains a full set of exotic weapons, armor, and trinkets” and states that these two classes will “receive a set of Soldier’s gear.”

So my question is:

“At level 80, would either of these two classes benefit more than the other with a set (or just some pieces) of exotic Soldier’s gear for PvE and WvW?”

(I’m planning on crafting exotic armor/weapons/trinkets for both characters, but if I can save a few gold pieces by actually using some of that Soldier’s gear that would be nice!)

From what I could find on these forums, the answer seems to “some Soldier’s pieces might be useful for a revenant — maybe — but probably would not be as useful for a guardian” — but I wanted to ask here before I stuck one of those characters with gear they’ll never end up using.

Thanks in advance!

Patch leading to Crash

MacChruim.1635

If this is the first time you’ve had this problem after a patch, consider yourself VERY lucky!

Arenanet can’t anticipate every crashing issue on every computer that may be used for playing GW2. Problems that occur on your combination of motherboard/video card/other hardware may not affect other people’s computers; problems on other people’s computers (which they fix in patch x.03) might then cause problems on yours, leading to patch x.04.)

This is part of why anet can’t release “just one patch” and why they often have to release subsequent “mini-patches” in the days after each patch.

Give it a day or two and a couple more mini-patches and these crashes should (hopefully) go away for everybody.

Almost as importantly, after the main patch, how many times are we going to get booted for follow-up patches?

My friends and I make a mini-game out of guessing how many times we’ll see that “a new build is ready” message each night after a patch.

“Hey, let’s go to Frostgorge now!”

“Another new — newer? — build…see you there after the download.”

500+ Laurel club?

MacChruim.1635

I’ve accumulated 566 laurels as a semi-casual, primarily PvE player, mostly because I’ve got too many alts and I’m constantly wondering “what should I spend these laurels on? WHO should I spend them on?” As a result, I’ve barely spent or used any of them!

I’ve earned that many laurels because when laurels were first introduced, a friend said “we should try to do ‘dailies’ every night when we all get together,” — and we usually play together three or four nights a week. We’ve basically made a “mini-game” out of knocking out “dailies” as quickly as possible, before we go do other things in-game. Most months, that alone gets most of us at least three of our monthly achievements, so it usually doesn’t take too much effort to finish whatever fourth category needs to be completed.

What I THINK people have been saying with “the wiki might be quicker” is:

“If you ask a question on the forum, you have to wait around for someone to see your question and then hope someone answers it quickly — and correctly — but if you look up a relatively common question on the wiki, the answer is already there and you’re right back to playing, no waiting required!”

Arah Story, Chopper not coming to Airship [Merged]

Just did the finale of “Arah Story Mode” twice with my guild and the chopper stayed a couple hundred feet off the bow of the airship the first time.

After we all quit and regrouped, I Googled “Arah story bug” while we decided what to do next, and of the four threads I saw, a quick count showed 15 “still bugged” versus 2 “worked for me’s.”

The group decided to try again despite the evidence against success, and we WERE able to successfully complete it the second time!

The casual players who aren’t farming 24/7 should be seeing the benefits of a “bot-less Tyria” when they sell any drops they get from “casual playing” and get more cash for those items.

Right, that’s true in the long term. Their drops will now sell for more, but the things they’d like to buy cost more too…. at least things on the tp.

In the short term, people with a lot of mats in the bank gained a bunch of value practically overnight. People with few mats and a lot of gold lost value overnight. Gold is value is in it’s purchasing power, people don’t like to see their purchasing power diminished. Those people would really like the bots back. It makes for fairly humorous conversations in map chat.

Sometimes I forget that I’m a “long term player” and don’t think about the “play something new for a month and move on to the next” gamers. I’ve only been here a month or so myself, and while I don’t have a -lot- of gold in the bank, I suffered the same feeling from the practically overnight inflation.

“Great, now my cash is worth about half as much as before!”

Still, I can’t help but think that this new economy will be better in the long term, and that this is certainly how ArenaNet had planned the economy. If they’d wanted swarms of “scavenger bots” running across the landscape, providing cheap materials, they could have written them into the lore. “Perpetual Motion Self-Repairing Mining and Reclamation Devices” or something with a snappier acronym. Sounds like something the asura might do.

This is one of the more interesting things I’ve since in an MMO. Bots, while annoying, are becoming missed…. Chat in LA on my server last night was all about how much they wanted to see the bots come back. The casual players who aren’t just farming 24/7 much preferred the cheaper prices of bots offered.

The casual players who aren’t farming 24/7 should be seeing the benefits of a “bot-less Tyria” when they sell any drops they get from “casual playing” and get more cash for those items.

Unfortunately, after posting a few links to the “Recent Market Shifts” sticky and gleefully spreading the news that ArenaNet has “….begun a renewed campaign against RMT and Bots,” I saw a train of about six bots running around my server last night.

It seems that the renewed campaign needs some more renewal — and yes, I know that sort of project is like one giant game of Whac-a-Mole.™ Get rid of them one place, they come back another, but I for one would like to see ArenaNet stay on top of the problem!

My Proposal

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: MacChruim.1635

MacChruim.1635

I see the base of problem in this game currently being two things which are really closely tied together: bots and gold sellers.

<snip>

But as I’ve witnessed personally in guild wars 2, there are lot of bots, and it often feels like bots sometimes out-populate real players, especially on unpopular maps. Sometimes it would be so bad that I’d see over 30~40 bots in a single map and a single digit of human players. They’re there 24/7 and days after I’ve reported them; a force much greater than humans.

According to this thread — https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/bltc/Recent-Market-Shifts — ArenaNet has “recently begun a renewed campaign against RMT and Bots. The change in these markets is a direct result of the success of that campaign.”

I personally haven’t seen any armies of bots running around in the past few days, but I know that one person’s experience compared to the entire playerbase is statistically insignificant. Maybe I’m playing at the wrong time, or in the wrong zones.

However, the multiple “Why has the price of ______ spiked?” threads in this sub-forum this week, combined with the above linked thread, suggest that ArenaNet’s campaign IS working. Here’s hoping that they keep on top of the problem!

Probably the same reason as everything else on the market is going up?

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/bltc/Recent-Market-Shifts

ArenaNet’s recent “bot banning” and the resultant drop in supply, weekend (or weekday) shifts in demand, speculation, imaginary “stealth nerfs” to drop rates, and so forth.

The good news is, as prices climb, everybody who is selling items on the market is getting more cash as a result!

losing listing fee if you remove item

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: MacChruim.1635

MacChruim.1635

There was a guy in America who bought a caravan and was driving down a freeway. He turned on the cruise control, and went to the back to make a coffee. The thing crashed and he SUED the company because the manual did not say that when on cruise control the car cannot drive itself, it merely maintains a set speed.

You’re right about people needing to be better informed, but that applies to you, too. The story about the cruise control is an urban legend, better known as the Stella Awards.

That is indeed an urban legend — there aren’t any reported cases of people being QUITE that stupid while driving an RV (aka “caravan” in the UK.)! http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/cruise.asp

As far as I know, GW2 is the only MMO that doesn’t return your listing fee when the item sells.

The sadly soon-to-be-defunct City of Heroes has a slightly more complicated version (thanks to their “blind bidding” system) — a 5% listing fee that wasn’t returned if you cancelled an item.

The listing fee WAS returned if you sold an item, but then you had to pay a 10% “transaction fee” (or tax) on the actual sales price. So if you listed something for 100, you had to pay 5 for a listing fee, and if it actually sold for 100 you got your 5 back and then had to pay 10.

If, on the other hand, you listed something for 100 that actually sold for 500, you paid 5 for a listing fee, got it back, then had to pay 25 for the transaction fee.

So in a manner of speaking, no, you never REALLY got your listing fee back there — the “best case” scenario was a 5% listing fee plus 5% tax — and at least the method here is a little simpler to understand.

Is it possible to flip items in this game?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: MacChruim.1635

MacChruim.1635

Here’s the simple math required to flip items:

Look at the sell price you intend to sell at. Multiply by 0.85.
This number is the price you can buy at to break even, you obviously want to buy items at a much lower number than this.

The answer to your question is “no”. There is nothing on the trading post that has the A: margin to be flipped AND B: volume to be traded reliably.

All trading in GW2 is fundamental, which is the same thing as spending 70 minutes at Jorrmag hoping to find Dusk. (crapshoot roll of the dice).

ROFL, and wow — is this actually sarcasm or irony in search of an “emoticon?” Is this perhaps a clever ploy to say “no, these aren’t the droids…er, profit you are looking for — move along?”

There ARE plenty of items that can be flipped for a profit — and items that are flipped every single day. There are other items that (at least a few of us have noticed) tend to have prices that fluctuate during the course of the week. (I like to buy low mid-week and sell for a profit on the weekend.)

There are also a lot of items that get flipped “day trader” style where people see a large margin on Widgets, buy a couple hundred for the “bid low and wait price, plus one” and then try to quickly dump them by undercutting the lowest seller. Hilarity ensues when five or six people try to do that at the same time, and the margin between “bid low and wait” and “Buy It Now” shrinks until someone’s actually selling their Widgets at a loss. Then, everybody walks away from that “market niche” and eventually “market equilibrium” sets in and the margin becomes large enough for the cycle to repeat itself, over and over. Meanwhile, the “day traders” run off en masse to find (and accidentally collapse) other niches, ad infinitum.

As someone said in another thread, if you can’t find something to flip, you’re probably looking in the wrong place. There ARE high-volume, low profit niches out there that can easily net somone a gold (or more) per day with minimal work, or there are low-volume, high profit items that everybody and their brother try to undercut each other on.

Lastly, just because the margin on Widgets right now isn’t worth the time, investment, or hassle — that doesn’t mean that the margin won’t be worth it in six hours, or tomorrow, or in three days.

Wait — why AM I telling everybody this and cutting into my own profits!? (Besides the fact that the market itself [and flipping] preys on human emotions like greed and instant gratification — and until those go away, there will always be plenty of profit to go around!)

“These aren’t the droids you’re looking for!”

Edit: just saw this part further up-thread:

What you earn is somewhat proportional to what you put in, so it’s true that a lot of capital helps. But it’s not a necessary barrier to overcome. I started flipping when I had about 1 gold to my name. If I invested more, I’d probably have more than the 20G I have now.

I started flipping when I had all the new equipment I needed on my character and one gold piece in the bank myself — which then became 2 gold, then 4 gold, and so on! Having more capital means it’s easier to invest in more niches, which means I’m not spending much of my profits yet, but I’m getting to the point where I can start buying “stuff.”

Spikes in a lot of prices this week are apparently caused by successful “bot banning” by ArenaNet.

Less bots = less supply of stuff on the market. Less supply with (more-or-less same as last week) demand = higher prices.

The good news is, even though everything costs more to BUY on the market, people who are SELLING their drops on the market are making more money as well.

Purge TP buy orders below the minimum price

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: MacChruim.1635

MacChruim.1635

It would indeed be nice — I was thinking about this last night, in fact.

But since orders below the minimum price cannot even be filled and therefore have zero effect on the economy I would rate this very low priority.

They have a miniscule effect on the economy as a gold sink, since they’ve taken some cash out of circulation semi-permanently. Now they’re just bids that can’t ever fill (with the current system), and they’ll sit there forever unless the player in question cancels the bid(s). Thanks to the laws of averages and probability, there’s a good chance that at least some of those bids were placed by players who have since left the game, so those bids will sit there until either Anet purges them or until the servers shut down.

In the meantime, those items are just ones we can’t sell on the auction house. Other items we can’t sell there don’t show up in the TP interface, so it would be more efficient for us if Anet would purge those “below vendor” bids.

Mail Cap Bug

MacChruim.1635

If this is indeed what’s causing your problem as well, it should definitely be addressed — “official” e-mails not counting AS e-mails is definitely a bug! (And it would be nice if we could get some sort of official confirmation and/or thread merge to prove that the powers-that-be are reading and/or aware of the problem.)

In the meantime, though, knowing what’s causing the problem* allows us to work around it and start getting e-mails again.

*And what exactly IS at the root of the problem? Are “official” e-mails NOT supposed to count towards the ten e-mail “cap” (explaining why they don’t show up in the “counter”) but they DO accidentally count? Or ARE they supposed to count towards the cap but they’re missing the code that flags the counter?

It’s all guesswork at this point — deleting excess e-mails worked for me, but the other person’s “thanks, solved my problem” is a little vague. Did s/he solve it by deleting excess e-mails as well, or by some other way? We’ll have to wait and see if indeed this is what’s causing your problem as well, but if it winds up being the same solution to all three of our problems, it looks like we’ve found the answer!

…except that MY counter was stuck at 6/10.

It turns out I had four ArenaNet messages about the Halloween event in my in-box that apparently don’t show up on the “__ of 10” counter.

As soon as I started clearing out some of the old e-mails, my new ones started showing up!

Hope that helps.

I had the same problem yesterday, in fact — a friend sent me some items, ran into me later in the day and asked if I’d gotten them and in fact I hadn’t. He sent me a couple more e-mails with more items and one sort-of obligatory “TESTING” e-mail and — nothing.

The number next to the envelope icon read 6/10 so we both filed a bug report.

Hours later, when I still hadn’t received them, I started clearing out my in-box just in case — I had six e-mails and four “Halloween update,” system generated e-mails for a total of ten, even though the counter said 6/10.

Once I started deleting, the three e-mails my friend sent started showing up.

Update: definitely seems to be a bug, but fixed now — thanks (?) to the GM or whoever fixed this issue for me, not that I got any sort of update to my problem ticket.

I just tried some more underwater fighting a little while ago.

First fight: Third attack was still at zero percent unlocked, no progress as the fight wore on — enemy defeated and BOOM! “Such-and-such unlocked!” across my screen.

Second fight: Zero percent, no progress on the fourth attack at all — enemy defeated and the same thing — “Attack Name unlocked!”

Third fight: same thing — no movement as the attack “unshaded” or “un-grayed itself out” and then as soon as the enemy was defeated, the fifth attack unlocked.

Three fights, three unlocks — this might be a new record for speedy weapon unlocking — but I also had to wait 23 levels to get there.

Bugged "weapon unlock?"

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

MacChruim.1635

I’ve been playing for about six weeks or so, have gotten my first character to level 80 and I’ve started and deleted a few alts along the way.

By now, you’d think I would know how weapon unlocking works: start with two attacks, use those attacks to unlock the third attack relatively quickly, use the three attacks until the fourth attack unlocks, then use those four while the fifth one seems to take its time unlocking!

However, I’ve run into problems with my new level 23 warrior and “Harpoon Gun” — despite what I’d consider a “normal” amount of aquatic adventures and unlocking all five attacks with “Spear,” “Harpoon Gun” remains stuck on “two attacks, third 0% unlocked.” Last night I fought multiple battles with kraits with ONLY my Harpoon Gun (getting myself killed in the name of science a few times) and Split Shot remains stuck at “0% unlocked.”

I’ve tried switching which equipment slot I put the harpoon gun into, I’ve tried equipping ONLY a harpoon gun and NO spear, and I’ve tried different harpoon guns along the journey from level 1 to 23.

This certainly looks like a bug to me, but I can’t find any mention of it on these forums — has anyone else hit the same “wall” with unlocking weapon attacks, or can anybody point me towards a thread with the same issues?

Thanks in advance!
