Ok, this is annoying
so i kept trying to update the game and it kept having the download speed drop to 0 before it stopped completely and had to be control alt delete shut down. i uninstalled the game figuring i will have to clean install. once uninstalled i went to install it to the C:/Games area and let it roll which takes forver. The problem is that it goes about 50% then locked up computer. I reboot, it goes to archive repair, then starts downloading again and same thing
whats going on
GW2 Client will not fully download updates?!

Quick background.
Computer Specs
Intel Quad Core Q9550
GeForce 560GTX
4 gigz of memory
I was gone for a couple of months and wanted to play some GW2, so I went to my computer and updated all my drivers and windows, etc before trying to access GW2. I did have a bit of trouble with my vid card drivers as after Windows screen it took 4 minutes of black screen before initial time it loaded all correct, and all is correct now. (i did proper cleaning, with driver sweeper, safe mode, etc)
In any case, I loaded up GW2 with anti-virus software off, it first went to updated the downloader which went fine.
The problem arose when it went to patch the game.
It had quite a large amount of patching to do, but it did not get far. It never got past 2%. The rate of download the whole time quickly went from like 2.8 mbs til it went to 0 then stopped downloading and a Windows “does not respond” message appear. Restarted it and it wanted to do the whole GW2 “repair” which i allowed. Once again though, the download rate goes to zero and then locks up, but it downloads nothing at all now.
What is going on?
did you install it to the programs directory?
GW2 is recommended to be installed on the C:\ drive in its own folder

Yup, sadly it does not. I really wish they would do something about this, especially on massive patches like Wintersday and the fact their downloader is buggy

$900 and you can get one that can still run the game in good settings.
The HAF 912 is a fantastic case, but as it does keep cooled, it also collects dust more
I agree on the PSU, different quality psu degrade differently and they all degrade. Corsair is a safe bet for any psu.
Also, you can get 60 fps in the world besides lions arch and wvwvw with rigs that are much softer and still run ultra settings (ie a Core 2 Quad, 4 ghz, gtx 560 can still do that). I do not overclock myself and get that.
i5 is better than i7.. difference in performance is very small vs the cost
Asus or Gigabyte are good, I prefer Gigabyte now days though.. I have gotten some bad Asus boards lately and short support cycles on them, plus your paying more
The google DNS trick that Kirito said is a good one to use. I also see an increased download speed too when I do that for larger patches
Also, disabling firewalls, security software..
Making sure its in a folder NOT in Programs
Make sure administrator privileges
that is an onboard card which I am not a fan of for gaming
If you did not select where you wanted them downloaded, it was probably placed on the C:\ Program Files
That being said, you do not want it installed there anyways as it can cause bugs. Put it in its own C:\ drive folder

Here are a few things that also can help
1. Do not install GW2 to your program files. Also, desktop is not ideal. Install it into a new folder on your C: drive
2. Make sure and install it as administrator
3. AVG is buggy with the game, but so is Avast. Disable it while installing/updating
4. Use Google DNS address…open up your Network and Sharing Center, and open up the properties of your internet connection. Double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Select Use the following DNS server addresses and in the first line put 8.8.8.8 and in the second line put 8.8.4.4 (if there is something else already there please write it down to revert it back later). Click okay and reset your connection, now try downloading the rest of the files. Remember to change the DNS settings back as they were after you finish downloading the patch.

Launcher problems.. so many different things..
Did you install to your Programs File?
They recommend you install to your desktop or better yet its own folder on the C:\ drive
Are you running it as administrator?
I also recommend when starting GW2, disabling your anti-virus software shields for a minute until its launched.
There is more stuff, but those are simpler stuff..
I have had all sorts of downloader/installer problems with this game. I have also managed to get them all fixed so far, but here are a list of things that I have found helped
1. Do not install GW2 to your program files. Also, desktop is not ideal. Install it into a new folder on your C: drive

Couple of notes. That system:
a. I love XP, but Windows 7 64 bit would be recommended at this point in life cycle. You can use more memory which is good cause 3 gigs of memory is a bit low
the graphics card is a bit low too. It is fine if you use in SLI with the same card, but it is a bit lowc. You can get by with a dual core, but performance wise, GW2 will use all 4 cores if you have them.
You have a good processor as 4 cores is what GW2 likes and good card. You can actually play GW2 in ultra settings just about everywhere with that set up so you can up your video settings from what you have.
You might get some more memory. 4gb is enough to play in ultra settings, but ideally probably around 8 gb would be best. Good news is that is cheap. Be sure to get same frequency.
As far as 200 vs 200 fights.. when you have animation flowing all over.. its going to slow you down unfortunately. Best bet is to turn down your setting video settings lower if your going into WvWvW. Also, even at full speed it will be hard to tell what is going on anyways with all the flashes!
you might check to verify your drivers are all up to date. You can certainly get performance boosts from drivers
With any new operating system, its such a massive thing that it is hard to test all scenarios so you never know what sort of conflicts and bugs might arise. Result is you can get oddities that nobody has answers to yet, much less patches to fix from Windows
Just off top of head.. how are chipset drivers? I noticed that Asus put out Windows 8 drivers for your board. Just to be thorough, that might be in order too

couple of quick things to note. Right now with all the particle effects, Lions Arch is going to really test systems more than it used to. I would not use it as a reference for performance. I am getting myself 6x better performance in every other zone.
Other thing.. Windows 8.. ugh.
I am not saying that is the problem nor do i think it is, but just something to think about in comparisons
I have had that same problem before. How old is your psu?
Keep in mind your psu will degrade the amount of power it can generate a pretty good amount each year, in particularly if it is not one of your major psu brands. Mine would do just what you said.. I took out my 850w NZXT and went with a more trusted Corsair 750w and problems solved for me. Not to mention it was only $100. I couldnt find the psu problem with any test I ran, but it kept getting worse which lead to the psu.. or.. ugh mobo.
Heat could be culprit.. especially if you are using it on a pillow or something
Yea, if you have 8 gb of ram you should be fine. I run ultra with only 4 gigs..
Are you noticing performance issues too?
Do you play any other games and which games?
I find GW2 is not as graphic card intensive as some other games such as SWTOR even, but it is pretty CPU intensive for a mmo. It seems to like 4 cores, so with that fact and the 9400 it could just be too much. I find with a quad core, gtx 560 and 4 gigs of ram I can run ultra and get around 30 fps consistently and 60 in the open areas. 2x 9800gtx+ are equivalent pretty much to a 560.
Obviously, new cpu is the most expensive fix of it all, but you could buy some more ram, toss in another 9400 in sli which wouldnt be expensive to get and get by I bet. All of that would be less than $100.
The next mmo though is going to eat your system lunch so start saving

Lions arch with a bunch of extra stupid looking tree’s and snow particles + fog density… well, there’s your 20fps.
turn environment down to low and reflections to off or medium. that should get you to a somewhat smooth 30-35fps.
This game needs more control over particle density and geometry lod
lol, I will agree with that and +1 that. I will give you credit
Trolling….
The freeze would happen on the downloader only. It does not make much sense on how DNS to fix freezing computer, but it did. I would suspect there is some other problem on how it is handling a DNS problem that lead to a freeze.
That being said, downloader and installation process of this game has been well documented as being screwy. The DNS was an attempt at something since nothing was working which you seem to agree does not make sense. It would seem then that you would do the same thing on testing and “wasted time with applications” rather than working with DNS
That being said, you kept trolling while others offered resolutions that might not make sense lead to resolution.
SolarNova had some good recommendations on computers for it. GW2 is more cpu intensive than say SWTOR, but actually less graphics intensive from benchmark testing… go figure.
As far as building it is not hard, cyberpowerpc.com has alot of options for building systems too if you do not want to build yourself.
couple of points I would make on cost though
Save money go i5 instead of i7. The performance increase vs the cost is negligible and AMD can run GW2, but they do bottleneck
Gskillz is some great RAM that is cheaper than Corsair. Do not go with off brand RAM, you will regret it which is why you do not want a prebuilt machine
Video card.. GTX 560 can play the game in ultra.. so GTX560Ti would be a good bet for cost vs production.
I would say Evo or Thermaltake Frio. Do not mess with water cooled. It is not needed and if you have a leak it could cause bad things
PSU – you do not need much but look at brand too if you plan on computer more than a couple of years. PSU degrade over time and some not so high quality degrade faster and cause problems later. Corsair 750 you can get for $100 and would be plenty of power even after several years and if you want to mod up and OC
SSD are great, but the space sucks while the costs is high. This is not a game accessing harddrive a ton so I would not worry about an SSD. Ideally would be booting off the SSD and having like a Raptor HDD in there for rest, but thats money
Mobo.. Asus is historically the best, but I am not happy with the board I have now. I would say go Gigabyte.. they are great and less expensive
the latest patch , gw2 16305 @ options screen, sort of like cripple my fps … it now drops to around 10~20 . I’ve even tried setting it to 1024×768 with lowest graphic setting, but still getting such low fps. It was good before the patch .. (1920×1080 @40fps with auto-detect setting )
Anyone experience this ? Dont think is my settings etc, cause no changes on my other games ( farcry3/hitman/etc)
Q9550
Ati 4870.
I have a Q9550, but with a GTX560 so a little bit better card, but I bet you have more ram than me as I am only using 4 gigs. I am running the game on ultra at 1920 × 1200. In Lion’s Arch I started getting like 11 fps, but honestly, if I did not look at the number, I would think it was much higher.. In other areas running around I was getting 58 fps. I wonder some how accurate that meter is.
I would say if you are looking things in Lion’s Arch it is not going to be as accurate because all the snow and stuff they have going on is much more taxing than Lions Arch normally is
when I said I burned the memory – I ran Prime95, Memtest86, Memtest86+, and Windows Memory Diagnostice for 8 hours
so you see, once again.. you are just trolling and not offering anything helpful nor understanding anything
I fixed the problem by the way, and it was a fix that you trolled of another person’s.. using Google’s DNS for download

I dont get how he is having that slow.. I have a Quad Core Duo with a Geforce GTX560 and only 4 gigz of ram and still hover at about 30 fps on ultra settings
I have read that AMD has bottlenecking problems, and I am not sure how an i7 would be that beneficial over an i5 on GW2, but something definitely wrong there
I am assuming you are just playing GW2 and not playing Crysis at the same time or have 800 background applications like Weatherbug
I am going to try this when I get back
I had all sorts of problems also when installing from the CDs also. Also, the Wintersday patch is MASSIVE. I cannot tell a difference in size between it and the full client download. You might just download the whole game fresh from ANet that way you do not run into any problems later on that patching can result in since it seems about same time. I am doing that now myself.. or trying at least
cute response.. the point is it is the downloader that does it.
The only time the computer freezes is when the downloader goes up after it download runs a bit
I have burn tested the memory for 8 hours – tested good
Turned off windows firewall and all services and programs that are not windows
All drivers are up to date, BIOS is up to date
All software is up to date cept GW2 of course
GW2 is in its own folder not in Program Files
I have uninstalled and tried to re-install but same downloader problems
I have ran the repair
Core temperatures are never over 35 degrees
Vid card temps never over 55 degrees

@Madmardagan:
since your system freezes, I presume you have no way of seeing the error GW2 produces… Can you try to check the Windows event log?
I think there’s definitely a problem with the patching process when GW2 starts. It just seems to express itself differently on different people’s computers.
Check if you can rename local.dat and gw2.dat or if you are prevented by windows when you try and post back plz…
My event viewer now does have two control errors.. event ID 7000 with Service Control Manager problem and an event ID 7001 concerning my Killer NIC
I do not think these are related though because while they are showing up now, I had several freezes before these showed up and only problem seems to still be with GW2. Plus these showed up after the last freeze and I had to hard reboot which is same time my clock went off the right time. I am guessing that was all more due to some mess up by improper shutdown.
I ran the Windows 7 troubleshooter on my Homegroup in networking and now I am not getting the 7000 error. Still getting the 7001 error, but at same time I wasnt seeing any new symptoms from either.
I tried creating/renaming a new .dat, but that did not help
I did have the game installed in the Programs Directory. I just uninstalled and reinstalled it to the desktop and only had time for a fast log in and it did not lock up, so maybe that was problem all along.
I will keep posted.

thanks a ton for that info. Very informative. I have all my games in my Programs folder and had not had much trouble until this game, but that is quite good to know.
I am guessing alot of people do not know that. I am fairly good with computers, but did not know that. I could see how that does cause some conflicts.

I been having problems past few days myself.. .dat file fix that you see alot here did not change anything.
One thing I did find that was posted by ArenaNet was the location of the installation of the game can make a difference. This appeared to be originally posted during the beta tests, but I noticed the date on the article was updated the other day.
It stated that
“do not install GW2 to your programs. Install it to Games or to your desktop” I reinstalled the game to my desktop and my problem went away this morning. Now if this will continue to work out who knows, but its worth trying..
http://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8981/~/the-guild-wars-2-client
I am not so sure why installing it in the Programs Directory would cause problems, but if it fixes it not doing that, who cares!
the problem is the client is not optimized that well apparantly. any quad core with a gtx560+ and 4 gigs of ram can play this game well on ultra..
but you see some systems that are more high end that do horrible, in particular AMD
an i3 with a 470 and 4 gigs of ram should be able to play fine too, but just seems this game is picky system to system
It is not graphics intensive on gpu usage.. other mmos are tougher on a gpu and mmos are not gpu intensive anyways. This game IS intensive for an mmo on the processor. Might check to see how much you have running in the background too. It is a game that can run on 2 cores, but ideally runs on 4 cores. Hyperthreading makes almost no difference on it, thus why i7 is basically showing no performance improvement over an i5

Couple of things I have noticed.. I wonder some if the FPS monitor is completely accurate. I see it read 25 sometimes on ultra, but have ZERO lag or slow drawing. So, might not be super accurate
As far as your question on AMD, it appears that AMD rigs DO have a problem with GW2. Here is an article on that in fact
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/guild-wars-2-performance-benchmark,3268.html
"Hardware issue detected..." recommends beta driver

Posted by: Madmardagan.7945
I ignored them and ran the latest standard drivers Yannick and had NO problems at all. That being said..
Last week nVidia released new stable/tested drivers in preparation for Bordlands 2 and GW2 detection says they are good. So its time to update anyways
Couple quick things.. you run on an AMD so you are a bit in trouble from the start. AMD just does not run near as well as Intel systems GW2. If you are looking for high settings, you really need something like a GTX560 which is going to set you back like $180, of course keep in mind when upgrading your card, your power supply. While you dont need 850W or anything, 300W is pretty low.
Resolution will also make some difference.
Great article on testing the game on different rigs and settings here

Case: Thermaltake Chaser MK-I Full Tower
Power Supply: Antec HCG M Series HCG-620W ATX12V
Looking at your above.. my 2 cents..
Mobo – I like the Sabretooth board myself. It is a bit more expensive, but its reliable and durable. I am of the opinion now that just cause its an Asus does not mean its quality like it used to be. I have a current Asus board that has been nothing but problems for me. Gigabyte is making some really good boards right now. They are not quite as costly as Asus just yet.
CPU – i7.. everyone loves the i7. Well, if its a gaming rig, you can save a few bucks going with i5. Yes, the i7 is better, but games do not use all the threading you will be getting with an i7. If it is for GW2, no reason at all for an i7. Tests show negligible improvement.
RAM: Take a look at the Ripjaws RAM by GSkillz. Dominator quality for much cheaper
Harddrive: Recent article was discussing data integrity on SSD. Appears that data degrades to the point of not being usable after 10 years on an SSD.. something to think about. I would still go SSD, but another option is going with a smaller SSD to boot off of an a tape drive to run everything. Get the boot speed of the SSD and storage of a tape.
PSU: Antec isnt bad, but I always say go Corsair. Corsair Enthusiast 750W is only $100.
Case: the HAF series cases are the best at cooling, although with them they do accumulate dust a bit faster in the inside
Cooling: I like fans. They can be low sounding, and liquid cooling can break and make for a bad day. I know with one of my Antec cases, I was running two gtx9800+ on SLI on a quad core duo rig and didnt notice until later than the CPU fan was dead yet the vid cards were still around 65 degrees and the cores all under 55. A good case can make a major difference (not saying dont get a CPU fan lol)
If you are just using this for GW2 though.. you can run everything on ultra with an i5, GTX560, and 8 gigs of ram

run a Quad Core System, GTX560, 4 gigs of ram on Windows 7 64 bit. If I can get into the game, it runs fine on ultra settings even.
The problem is getting into the game.
If the downloader tries to download, my computer freezes up
Background
1. Installed the game, and the first download it tried to do froze up my computer. I had to hard restart my computer at which point it went through “Repairing Data Archive”. Once that finished after a long time, it started to download again and locked up.
2. I went ahead and tried to re-install the game and had the same problem!
3. Third time it worked
4. Anytime a new download would come out, the system would freeze. I ran Malware Bytes additionally to make sure nothing in there besides using Avast. I starting running GW2 as administrator and turned off Avast when downloaded came up. everything seemed to work fine for past couple of weeks since I started doing that.
5. Yesterday, I disabled Avast as usual to download and it froze. I had to restart computer due to computer freeze again, and it did the “Repairing Data Archive” deal again for 30 minutes then starting trying to download about 200k files!!!! Of course, it locked up again before getting to 190k files remaining
6. Restarted again, turned off Avast again setting it for not coming back until restart. The Archive tool deal started again, after 30 min it game back again to download got to 170k files remaining after about 40 minutes and locked up AGAIN!
I have no clue how I can even play this game at this point. All my drivers are up to date, no infections, once in the game everything up to date.. its all about this downloader
(edited by Madmardagan.7945)
tests at toms hardware are showing that the difference between an i5 and an i7 are negligible. i5 is the optimal system for Guild Wars 2. If you have an i5 with 4 gigs of ram and a gtx560 card, you can run Guild Wars 2 on ultra. Hyperthreading does not benefit games currently, especially mmos.
two handed weapon using.. which can actually survive and do some damage in pvp groups and/or solo
Jseems that ideally you want a quad core for GW2, but it doesnt use the threading and all you get from an i7. That means an i5 would be ideal, but i3 should be fine. You might not be running top graphics, but you should be able to run balanced and get fine results.
also avoid AMD. It appears that they are bottlenecking GW2 and not getting near the performance any of the intel’s are getting. the i3 are better even. GTX560 will run everything in ultra modes graphic wise. From what I have seen, you also do not need 8 gigz of ram, but why not get it since its cheap and its pretty much the standard.
oddly enough, gw2 graphics card wise is easier run than SWTOR, but it requires better cpu.
I am running myself on a Quad Core Duo 2.8ghz (Q9550), gtx560, and 4 gigz. I havent played much and really early areas, but i been running on ultra settings fine. I should point out that even though its an older cpu, from the benchtests I seen on sites, its still faster than the i3 so take that for what it is..
Dont wast your money on a i7, get a i5k and overclock it.
Get a gtx 670. I wouldnt settle for less then that if buying new.
its true… mmos do not utilize i7 capabilities, i5 will pretty much max it..
ideal set up which is pretty much maxing out your game on premium settings
i5
gtx560
8 gigs of ram
anything more and you will not see a difference noticeable to the eye.
Also, better to get a quality psu rather than a higher wattage psu. Not all are created equal. 750 is fantastic, unless you plan on crossfire/sli in which case you might wanna go 1000 to be safe. All psu will degrade wattage over time more than you would expect so do not go bare minimum.
