To OP- For starters, Test how one travels with IA and see what makes the most sense to you. Is it a port, or do you just travel from A to B quickly? For example, you’ll find because of certain terrain you’ll be unable to complete your AI. Hmm what could that mean?
I think AI can help you understand how some of the bone structure of the game works.
Perhaps it’s our high expectations and assumptions that create our internal problems and struggles. Consider that maybe AI works fine and it is us who are misunderstood about how it works.
In other words, with honesty, truly dig deep in your self to find your own flaw before you point fingers elsewhere.
Good Luck!

You know, now that I look at it, this thread is 9 pages and growing of people saying yes and no to open world dueling. Its clear that many want it, and many don’t.
Not one reply from Anet.
Actually I don’t think we are entitled to an answer.
To be honest, speaking for my self, there are so many interesting and far more superior and funner games right around the corner. Hell, I’m part of their alphas and betas as we speak.
Personally I was picturing guild wars 2 with more interesting mechanics, one of them being open world dueling. So I posted here along with many others.
Whether or not gw2 has dueling in the future, I just want to express my opinion about this game honestly and then just stop coming to these forums again.
This game was amazing at the alpha stage because the community in the alpha was more adult and creative with the game mechanics.
On release and shortly before release, Anet changed small but interesting elements of the game which led me to believe they’d rather cater to a crowd that wants it easier as opposed to challenging.
There are many things they have yet to add on but that doesn’t leave me in anticipation to think that these things will be new and exciting or challenging. I think currently and how the content has been progressing, the game feels flat and repetitive. I think this is because majority of players would rather not be challenged and maybe forced to think a little on their own.
Take the events around the world for example. You don’t even have to look for them, they appear on your map. Not only that but players have it down on a loop routine. They call out the next events and at what time; rinse and repeat.
Another example, jumping puzzles! I thought it would be far more interesting if you DISCOVERED the jumping puzzles as opposed to looking at your achievement list and finding out what you need.
There is no difference between WoW and guildwars 2 aside from a subscription fee. In WoW you do quests and dailies and other bs. In Guildwars2 you do renown hearts, story line and dynamic event bs. In both of these games the actions are the same. What you do on an hourly or day to day basis is EXACTLY the same. Instead of a “!” over their heads its a heart, wow…what an innovative game.
Arena Net created an mmo experience that you could wear any piece of gear for you class, play any way you want with your build that YOU come up with. You can be unique and you don’t have to worry about having to have the right stats or the right build for a dungeon or a group or pvp. Because in gw2 the new thing is that, if you can play what you have, well you’ll be more than likely be able to adapt to any scenario. Instead though, what I have seen over the past couple of months since release is players treating this game LIKE World of Warcraft. Players ask for each others’ gear stats and builds before they enter a dungeon, as if those things make a big difference.
Listen, my point is that I want to point out that majority of you don’t like change or a challenge. You claim you’d hate dueling because of negativity, well most of the player base is pretty grumpy imo.
The fact that Anet has designed mechanics for people helping each other and being nice to each other implies that before this, people were not helpful or nice. When people started playing this game they didn’t go “oh I’m a nice guy, this game has people do nice things…I’m in!” no.
These mechanics are created for the rude and selfish to open up and be rewarded for being nice to others. That’s the only way you can get these types of communities to help each other, its to reward them.
They wont do it honestly because they wanted to.
It took two planes to crash in to the twin towers for people to help each other and care for one another as good Americans.
Anyway….. duels or no duels, Its a great time for life! great films are coming out, great games are in the making. Great minds are working on new and exciting things in general, and all of this is wasted on a dumb generation.
So basically, you’re a Hipster Dueling Thief that’s from the underground…dawg?
I see your point, but I don’t think ANet will ever add it because it doesn’t fit with their vision, if they do cave in then more power to you, but consider what happens if they do add it.
You beat someone in PvP/WvW. Next thing you know you’re spammed with “Noob u sux, 1v1 me bro!” “U so bad u girl if you no duel.”
Having systems like this encourage that kind of idiocy so it goes from a cool feature to a massive annoyance. Even with the ability to block requests you’ll still have to put up with people taunting you if you don’t accept. I’ve seen so many MMOs with this problem and personally I’d rather not deal with it. ATM there are a few dueling PvP servers and while they aren’t perfect at least the option is there.
I would be “OK” with a dueling PvP mode, but as for Open World dueling, no thanks.
Thanks Burr, happy you understood what I was talking about.
I know the problem you talk about, but I don’t see it as a problem for the simple matter that an adult could just ignore and not pay attention to those type of players. I mean I do consider my self an adult playing a video game. So to give in to that crowd (which btw already exists as you state it) is just nonsense. You still have those types acting up anyway about other things, and all people do is ignore them.
As far as the hipster underground thing…no, I don’t even understand what that means.
I just want to express my idea like you are and so many others are doing as well.
If not duels will be implented then some people will quit just as much as people quit this game because there are no end game content. 2 easy to get good gear….. Or not? Well just implent raids healers and tanks and the game is fine //// Inspect option or gtfo?= Yes pretty much
This post was highly confusing to read. Duels are end game content? Like I said in my post classes in GW2 are not balanced to be equal in 1v1 engagements, they are balanced based on how they function in a team fight. Classes like Mesmer are stupidly strong in 1v1, I mean Moa Form is basically a “I win” button in that situation and being able to DPS while not even directly attacking is a HUGE advantage. This can be balanced out in teams by the fact that they have generally crap condition removal and if 2 people focus them with CC they drop fairly easy.
As for the best gear being too easy to obtain? That’s one of my favorite parts about both GW1 and 2. The game is about how good you are as a player, not “I played X hours more than you and you shall never win because I am 2 tiers higher than you Bwahaha.” Imagine how much WvW would suck if there was such a gear treadmill. As for End Game content, you must be blind. There’s many dungeons with a new one just being added. WvW is infinitely replayable and is also getting updates on a fairly frequent basis. Now, if you’re a S/TPvP player like I am you DO have something to be put out about, because there is only one game type and a buggy ladder system.
Healers and tanks? Already exist only they just aren’t dedicated. Guardians already serve as tanks and warriors can support them, but not in the same way as other MMOs, you’re expected to look after yourself and not be babysitted by a cleric. Gear inspect? Sure they could add that but honestly it’s nothing that important, in terms of priority that would be towards the bottom. In SPvP you can spectate and very gear and that’s the only place where I would really care about seeing gear.
Sounds to me like you want this game to become a generic WoW clone with dodging. If that’s the case then go play one of those because GW2’s goal was to NOT be that kind of game, which comes with its own issues but I for one find it much more enjoyable than spending months grinding for gear.
Burr you bring up interesting points about class differences but I think the idea for open world dueling is much broader and a lot simpler.
You see, 1v1 happens in WvW rarely,1v1 happens in sPVP as well.
Dueling, It’s not about how to use balanced classes in a team its about fighting people one on one with what you have built. It will bring that group of players together. In fact, dueling will create so many more interesting ideas in fights; It will broaden horizons.
I think, personally, that I am a good thief, and I play a very unconventional build. Its entirely created around the way I like to fight. When I’m wanted in a team/group I fight the best way I can with what I have, but I don’t change to the standard team setup.
See, dueling is about discovery and finding new challenges with new opponents.
It’s not about bragging or showing off KD ratios.
Its about honor and respect to the art of fighting, especially with such an interesting combat mechanic. The possibilities are exciting and they can be opened up more if this is implemented.
Its very underground at the moment.
You have to go out of the way to find people who are passionate about dueling.
This shouldn’t be so disconnected.
Its very exciting to see more people wanting this.
I mean, I’m sure ANet had open world duels in mind but I wonder why they didn’t add it?
I’d love to see ANet reply to this topic and give their input as to what the possibilities are.
Keep it mature and keep asking! Good Luck!
Well sorry about not searching first.
Anyway, I see that this has been a really pressing issue for many players.
I hope it does get implemented.
Like someone had mentioned, yes there are costume brawls. This could suggest open world duels in the future.
I like some of the ideas that have been mentioned on this thread.
-Places you’d go to in the world that are meant for dueling, like open arenas.
OR
-Dueling only allowed outside of major cities.
-When duels begin, only the two opponents can see each other for the duel’s duration. Meanwhile, if there are any spectators on the side, they can watch the fight and not be intrusive to the fighters.
Its always good to add more fun to a video game.
Hello,
Would it hurt the game if it had dueling?
I imagine it working just fine. It would be out int he normal world. You wouldn’t have to go to WVW and risk to get trampled by a group of 30 or PvP and risk to get trampled by a group of 10.
I don’t see the harm in it. It could be a simple system of requesting, accepting or declining. I think it would create a new and interesting dynamic to the communities. People would start forming small dueling groups (or not). Either way, the world in gw2 is filled with so many interesting locations to have dueling showdowns.
I think it would be a invigorating experience.
I understand that people probably wouldn’t want the hostility that could come out of it. I think as it is right now people are already hostile and rude to each other. I think there needs to be a balance to La La land with some chaos. Yes you can go in to WvW for that, but even then at times I want to fight the guys on my server. Yes you could do it in PVP but I would like to fight with the equipment I have earned in the normal(pve) world; and I don’t want to get in to the difference between pvp gear and pve gear.
I currently am playing the Firefall beta. I must say its a very thrilling experience playing that game. You can do just as much and even more in pve. With dynamic events and randomly generated missions. The list goes on. Players help each other. When you’re about to die you can be revived. You’re not rewarded for it, players just do it because they feel its a good thing to do. In the midst of all of the pve and the exploring and fighting very good npc Ai for an mmo, people can stop, get off their bikes and issue a duel any time they want. People crowd around and watch. Its really cool!
Its great how a small detail like dueling, can add so much to the experience of the player. Some of my favorite memories in gaming are from vanilla WoW and encountering opposing faction players and having one on one fights out at the crossroads. You’d build up a name like that too.
Granted that was fighting with an opposing faction, but there was honor and people understood 1v1 situations because that was established through duels. On top of that, dueling in front of Orgrimmar was always great!
Anyway Anet, have you considered adding Open (pve) world Duels?
Thanks for reading (I hope)

So do you actually have people that keep up with each realm and report from there or is this fictional news for the sake of RP?
For example, If I may ask a rhetorical question.
If a player was to make an impossible jump that no one on this game has ever made on server…. “Yellow Duck” then would we see the news about it on here?
This is an interesting idea.
Good Luck!
Hi there,
Haven’t posted in a while. I haven’t played in a while either.
Here is something.
I always imagine WvW to feel epic and dangerous.
And instead of mass zergs roaming around its small groups that try and survive while defending small villages and castles.
You’d have to live in wvw. You’d have to eat, rest, gather supplies. You’d be sleeping under tents out in the middle of nowhere.
The wild life would hunt for food, you’d hunt the wild life.
The land masses in wvw would be one seamless world. You’d get in boats and sail to each one when needed.
Before I get carried away here is a piece.
Thanks for looking,
-Mandra
How do you people expect for them to listen to you when all you do is complain.
I force my self to play better with what I have.
I don’t change anything unless I clearly cant do anything with it.
The good thieves will keep going…and going…and going… They won’t even break a sweat.
Good luck.
I mean why give Initiative, such a flexible method for fighting, to abilities that can melt face in seconds. Won’t that just add more problems as it already is?
Now imagine if initiative was used more for something like “death’s charge” or more stealing/stealth/ heal your friend/stealth your friend related abilities. Let the warriors cave in skulls have the thief be more sophisticated in its play.
^ Thief gets played like an Assassin because that is what they are replacing from GW1.
Man I’d get a trait to heal you for warping to someone with more health than you.
I’ll call it Deaths charge. The Deaths Charge idea is actually really nice!
Thief type of traits… ore traits to support STEALING abilities and stealth/being slippery.
Majority of the player base that plays thief play it like an assassin. I know it has a very high burst damage thing going, but it would be nice for the thief to feel like a thief and not like a rogue or assassin or the typical kitten kitten all class. Warriors feel like warriors, ele feels like ele and same goes for rangers, necros, mesmers, engis and guardians.
Thief is being used in a very contradicting way by majority. Not to say that that’s bad but it is very un-interesting.
I mean so what if you can one shot people. That happens in every other military shooter. Head shot, quick kills, kittening and complaining. Why is that so appealing to people.
As an idea,
How cool would it be if you were able to steal in to your opponent grab them and port with them away form the scene. This could be done to a foe or a friend.
I’m currently using a d/p build. My build is not glass exactly but close, and its good for what the thief can do; it works great!
I wish that this wasn’t the case though.
If any one is a real stealth gameplay fan, I’m sure you have played great classics like thief and thief 2.
It would be great to have thief feel like the experience you have playing the thief games.
Any way, to add to the actual post’s question I’d say: Add traits that bolster stealth, stealing, disguise skills, feign death skills.
For example:
I love shadow refuge and the amount of help it contributes to a smart group in pve and pvp.
Skills like that should be more important to be used than hitting heart seeker for the kill.
Imo, the way I picture thief is not a high burst dmg class.
Thanks.
I don’t remember, but Its probably end of 09 or sometime in 2010.

I can currently play gw2 (and i chose to/like to play it this way) at 1024×600 with high effects on. I do this with every other game too.(L4D, FC3, ARMA:DAYZ, Amnesia…etc.) I Personally cant stand the crisp cg/polygon look. I like my edges smooth but natural and soft. So with FXAA and or Anti Aliasing and low rez it works out well. Also it doesn’t eat up my fps.
If I could run it at even lower rez and still keep a wide 16:10 or 16:9 format I would.
Oh! another thing off topic. Is it possible to update your Display/video card drivers on a boot camp MBP? I mean update them in a legit way? or close to legit so there are no compatibility problems?
(edited by Mandra Madador.1709)
I’m currently running gw2 on a 15 in macbook pro that is bootcamped and it runs fine. My question is, are all the resolution choices in the list of resolutions for a wide range of aspect ratios or are they just for 16:9.
Because currently, the selection I see in the drop down is only for 16:9.
I’m confused because I always thought my mbp’s screen was meant for 16:10.
For example If I play Left 4 Dead 2 I have a selection to choose from 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10.
Thus at 16:10 I can choose an even lower resolution than 1024×600 and put all my effects to high and still get no fps drop.
I was wondering if that was going to be possible or if it is possible in gw2?
Thanks.
Perhaps when you swing a 2h sword in this game at the end of the swing your character could follow the swing’s momentum slightly to accentuate the force and weight of the huge blade.
In my opinion, if you’re holding a sword that looks like it can cut through a tiger tank you shouldn’t be able to sheathe it on your back, rather you should just have to carry it over your shoulder.
If you follow the Human body proportion.
The ideal measurement for feet is to compare it to the height of the head; from chin to the top of the head. The length of the foot is roughly the same measurement as the height of the head.
Perhaps when customizing your character, make your head bigger.
Then you’d have to consider body type balance to the size of your head to look normal.
I think the feet look fine.
Sorry…I haven’t posted in a while.
This is dedicated to my girlfriend’s character “Bitapetrone”
She plays a mean thief!
“Fighting Glass”
It would be interesting to see a short that is driven by a simple story.
For example the story could be as simple as: “In WvW, a battle is fought to defend five helpless survivors behind their own fort.”
With this you can focus on recording things to describe that scenario.
Most videos that I have seen are mainly damage show off and ganking.
To me those type become quickly uninteresting because it is an inevitable experience as a player.
I find that the ui gets in the way of anything i’d want to record and it pulls away from the cinematic aspect.
Maybe ANet can introduce a movie mode in gw2 meant for recording clips.
Perhaps it could be an item you equip that puts you in first person looking through a camera.
Right now I’d probably crop the image plane and remove player names. Thus having a clean view of action.
It’s not real machinima but it would be well indicated.
Any way keep going. Watch many films (non game related) and your sensibilities will improve.
Good luck!
Thanks for posting!
I think SB is a great weapon for thief!
It’s probably the hardest to use well imo.
I run a SB/SB setup with a mobile build.
Something like
10
0
10
20
30
I’m still learning to use the short bow as fluid as one can use daggers and pistols.
- Dual wield 1h Swords
- Fist Weapons
Well good luck man! Just know that no one is holding it against you.
The great thing about dropping this game is that you CAN drop it and there’ll be no effect on anything.
Its mean’t to be played when ever you feel like it.
You have no subscriptions to worry about or raid hours to meet.
Its pointless to make “I quit” posts.
See ya!

Thank you guys!
I’m very happy to see so many other people show their creative sides on these forums.
Its very motivational!

Very interesting!
I like how you think about the design of your strokes.
I use an intos 4 and I make my own brushed. I have a collection of other brushes form other artists as well.
Do you have any favorite artists?
I’m still using cs3, I think I should upgrade maybe.
I tried adding you in game btw, I typed in “fay.5827” Maybe I’ll see you around in game.
I’ll prob upload a sketch tonight. I have been on this gw2 craze, been playing a bit.
Very nice!
Nice designed shapes!
So simple
Do you make your own brushes?
Do you use a centiq?
Nice edges!
Nice man,
Try this if you want: you should get black cloth or illustration board, prop it behind the sculpt, light it and shoot it again if you want.
Maybe with two lights, a back light and a front.
I bet this would look really nice staged.
Nice work man!
Nice Fay!
Your shapes are really cool.
If you’re in to the ink brush/graphic look, Check out Justin Sweet’s site (http://www.justinsweet.com/GALLERY/INDEXES/Illustration1.html )
he has amazing digital drawings.
Keep uploading.
Feels fresh and inspirational.

Nice! You air brush that? or did you paint it with a brush? or both?
hehe
How big is that? Up to the elbow?
Hey guys,
Sorry for the lack of posts.
Work sometimes can take all that entertainment time away.
Here is another quick one!
Enjoy!
I’m happy with the changes.
Back Stab wasn’t really touched but…whatever.
Still a good game overall!
Hey guys,
I’m new to this fan-generated Content part of the forum.
Seems most interesting to me and the least hostile.
It also blooms with creativity!
I’ll be posting random paintings that revolve around this game I guess.

I need to upload my work to cghub…
I should get in to this.
It seems to be the most interesting part of the community and the forums to me.

has nothing to do with GW2 – sorry about that
I think playing the game would actually satisfy everyone, as opposed to wondering about it..
Hi there, I’m not sure what you mean by that, sorry. Can you explain?
Hello there,
I have a simple question which has been bothering me. I’d like to get closure on it hopefully from the ANet team.
But its obviously open to anyone to comment. (please keep it honest and adult)
This might be silly to ask since I have worked with a team before in developing kitteny games for the 360.
Not long ago i watched a Documentary called “Indie Game The movie” as well as “Heckler”. It made me realize how much negative comments can have an effect on the performer or the product.
I was wondering,
When a bunch of kids complain on these forums about pvp and OP builds, and state things like “this game is dead, don’t play it…these people don’t understand how to balance”…does that hurt you guys overall as a team?
Does it hinder your reputation?
Can careless negativity like this possibly destroy this game?
Because it bugs the hell out of me at how little these people know about developing a game let alone balancing it. Yet they give such ignorant and meaningless comments on selfish subjects.
Thanks,
All the best,
-M
I’ve said it once, and I’ll continue to say it:
Bad players get Good players Nerfed in MMORPGs
I figure once they nerf out class into the ground, I’ll be onto another game hopefully. Least I enjoyed the long awaited GW2 (and massively delayed) to come to this
Bad players only stay bad, good players started bad and only got better.
A good player will never be nerfed, they’ll take on every challenge thrown at them.
The best baseball player in the world will still strike out if you give him a limp feather instead of a bat.
Ok, thats nice, but no one will hand a baseball player a limp feather.
No one has been handed something that drastic yet in this game. It still works and “good” players will still do good.
BUT!
To retort to your day dream metaphor, that best baseball player still wont complain with a limp feather.
He’ll probably find more feathers to make wings and fly in to the sun.
I’ve said it once, and I’ll continue to say it:

Fellknight : “Alpha, Beta, live 3 months, over 100,000 player complaints about it but YES on november 15th everything will be corrected and there will be free bunnies for the kids.”
-I heard that talking about beta or alpha or w/e is under NDA and you’re not asposed to talk about it.
I like how this guy is doing nothing but crying and being rude. In the mean time pretty much everyone here is trying to tell him to calm down and that everything will be okay.
I think less attention should be give to these type of players from the player community. If all they are going to do is shut them selves off and cry then what is the point of trying to explain anything to them. I’m amazed at how long this post has become over this guy.
He reacts to this like its the first time, yet he is a well trained pvper. If you were so cool in pvp Fellknight then why don’t you keep your cool?
Yes allot of things need balancing, yes more people than YOU→ Fellknight are getting the same thing done to them, and they are willing to wait. You know why? they are better players than you.
Sorry this hasn’t been constructive for you but that archetype of annoying crying players is starting to make this community look like the kids table.
Everyone who doesn’t agree can flame away. End of the day this skill is ridiculously overpowered. Which is why 90% of WvW thieves including myself just spam it over and over.
This skill is giving every glass cannon spec thief HUGE damage mitigation. I barely take any damage while doing it, thanks to reflecting projectiles.
Can’t be crowd controlled, thanks to stability.
Added bleeds and cripples because hey let’s just add more on top of an already amazing skill?
If all goes wrong: Stealth/Bow port/Skill port/Any of the stealth/port skills and you’re gone, free and clear 90% of the time.
Considering anyone chasing you would have to be a thief to even do anything, and also considering everyone you just Dagger Stormed is half dead.
I’ve come to the conclusion that this skill is lame and overpowered to add to my already great skill set. Hell I kill people just by throwing knives at them and not even going melee sometimes. If I have to go melee I just pop Dagger Storm.
Lol. I mean if you don’t want to agree, whatever. However, I will admit it, I am overpowered. It WAS fun now it’s just cheese. I see no reason to go any other build as I am probably better than a ranger at range thanks to all my escapes/stealth/dagger storm.
My brother and I had a group setup of like 5-6 thieves all doing dagger storm. LOL. I mean were you guys actually being serious with this skill Anet? I am not even trying to flame it just feels so ridiculously OP.
Here is how you counter DS. You can: Stop ranged attacks, roll, LOS, move back a bit (moving away can decrease the chance of you getting hit by the flying daggers), attack them in melee if you can keep up to them, you can still hurt them while they DS.
If you’re a proper glassy build for ultra damage, I would just move back wait till you’re done twirling come back in and continue. Not allot of people have that reaction time, or awareness to immediately dodge.
Make sure you’re basing your OP experience from fighting experienced players.
I can fight a newcomer and kill him and write about how awesome my class is.
Anyway
Just give it a sec.
Don’t run in to it head first.
Practice against the Thief dummy in the Mists. She does DS in her fights most of the time.
She actually is more of a challenge than majority of the player base I encounter.
“Maybe I should name my title WTF OWNED BLAH BLAH BLAH so the kiddies answer? "
You don’t want that, you’ll get verbal diarrhea.
So, you’re asking what exactly? Why you’re not doing big numbers when you’re running a balanced build? Or are you asking something else?
Here is my two stupid cents: You make a build around playing evasively and play it well, you’ll live longer. You make a build around playing like an assassin (you hit hard and kill fast) and play it well you’ll kill more. As a glass cannon you can still get away but chances are you’ll prob die more as opposed to when you’re more survival built.
In the end when you get locked down and jumped by ten of them you’re dead anyway.
Like Mr. Miyagi said: "Walk on road, hm? Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later get squish just like grape. Here, karate, same thing. Either you karate do “yes” or karate do “no.” You karate do “guess so,” just like grape. Understand?"
You either make something that will make you live a while but do steady slow damage, or you make a glass build, kill fast, live short. Anything in the middle is mud.
Your quality of gear and your thought out build put together is only 50% of the battle the rest is how well you play with what you have.
There is a notion that if you have the right build, you can face roll and do good all the time. When you’re faced up against good players that never happens. You can follow the thousands of other thief’s builds and spec as glass to blow stuff up or you can keep going, struggle a while, mess up a bunch, challenge your self, and eventually you’ll find something that is perfect for you.
By that time you will have all the practice you need.
Hope this helps you Torren,
good luck, have fun!
-Madador
Which dungeon, in your opinion, is the hardest, roughest, most challenging and most hated for how unfair/impossible it feels?
Yea but, you typing this doesn’t change anything and I doubt it helps the trolls and the complaints go away.
All though I agree with what you say, I think to write a post like this in attempt to put a stop to the complaints and rage posts only prolongs the rage posts.
Because what you wrote to many may just reads as: “You’re all a bunch of children, stop complaining, Arena Net…..fun….nerf”
