Never underestimate an engineer with a wrench
Exploding illusions FTW

I’m guessing they will limit the might stacks or change the condi damage boost might gives. Still a nerf to the build but maybe not making HGH obsolete. Of course they have mentioned boon hate in general before so changes to the number of boons could possibly effect how might stacking works. Hard to say at this point. I just think some nerf will come to it since every popular build for the engi gets nerfed at some point.

If you are fighting 3 or fewer people you are being useless, that’s why I made the distinction. In that case just run whatever you run in spvp, most likely rabid + lyssa.

You can’t flip camps on your own unless you play against servers with bad/no scouting or when everyone is sleeping (and even that dosesn’t work against servers with good coverage).
In both cases those points won’t really matter since you can’t take towers on your own.
Just stick with you zerg I’ll flip the camps you leave. I play on JQ BTW. The post is about HGH in WvW. It’s effective if you know what it’s strengths and weaknesses are. I find it quite good running solo or with a small group. I try to avoid the zergs unless they are taking hills, bay or garri. I find small fights much more fun.

Unless you are running around killing upleveled clueless players and being useless in general condition damage is worthless, your conditions will last less than a second against decent groups.
In zerg fights, yes. It’s pretty useless but against supply camps and fighting 3 or fewer people it’s pretty effective with HGH.
Was thinking more along these lines, not sure and its a huge karma/dungeon run investment to gather all the exotic armor etc. So I wanted to check what other people run.
Nades are needed in WvWvW in my opinion
If you can master grenades and actually like using them they are the best for damage. I like the pull, block and confusion tool kit gives so I have a more pistol related build.
As far as toughness, vitality goes. If you run on higher tier servers you will get steam roll zerged on occasion and only elixir S, and/or toolkit shield will keep you alive for a few seconds. It also depends on who you face, a condi class vitality is better, a thief or burst class toughness is good.
(edited by MikeT.9428)
Yeah, go with all stats. If the nerfs continue when a good build shows up on the forums, it’s hard to see whether power, condi, or tank will be best for us in a couple months.
Grenades need a Carpal tunnel syndrome disclaimer. They are effective though.
Perhaps it’s more a rune problem and not HGH as a trait…
^ I think this will happen. HGH will still work as it does now but you will only get 8-12 stacks of might unless you are in really long fights where sigils can add up.
I think you will lose might sooner when you are out of combat. So you will not be able to carry the stacks as long.
Well depends on whether it’s for WvW or sPvP. WvW confusion is great making the prybar from the toolkit powerful, plus the tool kit block while in zergs. sPvP confusion isn’t so great so using grenades and a build suited for them makes more sense. Just have to know where you want to use it and go from there.
They have their pros and cons. Asura is way better at navigating jumps but it’s hard to see armor and weapons on them. Charr look better IMO, and the weapons and armor show up better but falling in the colossus fractal is hell on my biggest body size and build charr. I think it’s easier to see large models dodge roll to spot the real mesmer but maybe that’s just me. If you are into the cosmetics of armor and weapons go charr, if you want to be more maneuverable go asura.
Which dungeon is most fun is subjective. Just run COF path 1 until they change it which will likely be next month if I was a betting man. This will get you exotic berzerker armor and weapons plus earn you a good amount of money.
Just practice using blink, and portal and watch a few COF path 1 videos of what to expect.
Once you have a full set of exotics from COF I’d explore more of other dungeons. That’s just my opinion though.
Also use GW2LFG.com to find quick groups unless you have a guild that’s active in dungeons.
(edited by MikeT.9428)
We get nerfed because we own WvW, PVE, dungeons and are the most popular class in the game. ohhh…now I think about it maybe thieves own WvW, PVE maybe warriors or elementalists?, dungeons probably warriors, most popular not sure but it sure isn’t an engi.
I would love to see Robert actually play AC with a group of sub 50 pugs and then say its “fine” when his party leaves him on his own because the rest of them wiped.
ROFL…well played!
+1
I’d pay with gems to get a backpack to replace hobosack, gems to change the look of the bag (on fire, ice, bag of cave troll heads), I would use gems to toggle it off only if a guild backpack or another back piece was still visible.
the fact that PUGS are less likely to be successful running most (not all) of the dungeons.
You’re saying that as if it’s a bad thing. Remember, Colin considers explorables the “hard mode”.
Yes that’s my opinion. You clearly have your own. I’m just saying explorer for AC shouldn’t be the same difficulty and rewards as dungeons that are suppose to be designed for level 80’s. This is suppose to be a level 35 explorer dungeon.
This is an MMO and I understand they completely revolve around the power leveler crowd. Get as much as fast as you can whether that be money, levels, legendaries…whatever floats your boat. Only focusing on this crowd gives the other half of their population less reason to play a good portion of the game.
Why not have a choice when you are prompted to enter the dungeon. Do you want explorer path 1 tier 1 which is designed for dungeon focused groups and has the rewards and difficulty set for that group. Have tier 2 and 3 for teams that have lesser rewards and difficulty but more PUG friendly.
I only play PUGs which means I have only really tried AC and COF explorer. I realize unless I’m willing to dedicate more time and effort into the game I will never be part of the dungeon farming regulars. I may never see the other explorer paths for the rest of the dungeons because of this.
Guess there is always COF path 1 for now a PUG friendly route for another month maybe.
(edited by MikeT.9428)
What gets me is this is suppose to be “designed” for level 30 to 40 players as their first dungeon. They should make it easy with less rewards IMO that way newish players would play it and experiences players wouldn’t farm it. The flat token gain to all dungeons and same stats for multiple dungeons doesn’t make any sense to me. Why would you run Arah when you can run CoF, same token count earned, same armor stats…
I guess there is always the cosmetics but really?
I’m sure I’m the minority here but why not have the exotics earned for the level appropriate dungeons be for that level AC level 40 exotics with 50 tokens per piece?
I just hate the one size fits all in difficulty (somewhat), stats from armor/weapons, and the fact that PUGS are less likely to be successful running most (not all) of the dungeons.
I would say out of all the classes the engi is probably one of the weaker in PVE, warrior would be one of the better classes in PVE. A power build necro could be fun to try. I have a condi spec 80 necro but haven’t gotten around to learning / respecing to a power build. If you are looking for dungeons I’d say Ele, Warrior, Guard, or maybe Thief. If you just want something that’s fun to play Engi, Necro, Ele, maybe thief would be my suggestions. If you want easy mode PVE it’s ranger, Warrior, and Guard IMO.
In the end I’d say thief or ele.
Yeah, it’s not very useful in PVE killing things in WvW this build primarily centers on confusion. Which is pretty weak in PVE, it takes a long time to kill things and you don’t offer much to support a group either. This build in dungeons isn’t a good idea IMO. Either go support with elixir gun if you don’t have a guardian in the group or a damage build with rifle, grenades…etc. Engi’s in dungeons are best used for combo fields IMO but I don’t normally run PVE with the engi.
If you really want to be a survivability troll, roll a Mesmer.
Yes, there are far more effective classes that troll and out damage this build. Mesmer, D/D ele, probably guardians but this is an engi board. :-)
Engi’s are fun to some players (me) even though they aren’t the “best” DPS, troll, support, or basically anything you can think of. This build is pretty weak if the other player you are fighting isn’t terrible but there are plenty of terrible players in WvW and even if you face a good player you should at least be able to live through the encounter as long as you don’t get enemy adds.
I prefer the mesmer for PVE but to me the tanky engi is loads of fun even though it’s rather weak against other skilled players. If the orange swords in WvW go away for fights under 25 people you will likely see more of these engis.
As far as being effective goes there’s always farming yaks and carrying supply you don’t have to be supreme winner of all of WvW to be effective for your server.
I have one that’s the tallest and the heaviest build. I planned to fill up their screen with clones in WvW but pretty much just use the mesmer for dungeons and a little PVE here and there.
Hmmmmm……. the rune choice is interesting! I might have to experiment with this too!
In all seriousness you won’t kill a well played TankCat build even 1v5, but at the same time he won’t kill you either unless you’re hitting him.
Preacher
As far as the TANKCAT build being “garbage” that would be the case if everyone played competently but the tankcat build is a perfect counter to a glass cannon thief which is why I run it.
I play a TANKCAT build on JQ but it was not me that you fought. This statement isn’t correct BTW. All it takes is a couple thieves that remove condition or do no attack while confusion is up and you’ll go down as soon as your blocks or elixir S is on cooldown. I would say you should never be beat 1vs1 using the TANKCAT build but a couple bursty classes played half way competent should be able to take down a tanky engi. A tank class like a D/D ele will have a hard time killing a well played tanky engi though. If you don’t attack while confusion is on you, the ele should have no problem outrunning the engi but my guess is that it would be a stalemate if both players were paying attention.
I have a bigger problem with 4 thieves and a mesmer grouped up hitting camps. It is what it is. Use a tankier build, or roll a thief.
Short answer: Thieves are ridiculous.
Long answer: D/D Steal/Backstab/CnD combo is ridiculous.
What he said plus what others have said about tougness > vit in WvW. Look at guardians most of them only run with 12k or 15k hpts but their toughness makes them hard to chew through. Of course they have lots of heals too but bursting them down isn’t easy.
You could use an off hand shield to block and/or knock back and also the toolkit has a nice block. That along with your elixir S can keep you alive until their first round of cool downs are spent. Although you may not have time to react without enough toughness.
TANKCAT confusion builds own thieves but struggles with tanky builds at least while I’m controlling the engi.
Thanks for the response and the trait tip!
I want a guild backpack that costs 5 gold to over ride the kit backpacks. I haven’t bought one for just this reason.
So… basically what the topic asks. Does time warp increase the speed of commune for skill points in Orr? I have one skill point left for zone completion at the Altar of Betrayal in the Straits of Devastation (Orr) that has the statues bombing everything in the area. I solo the couple of vets and general risen in the area and try to commune but the AOE burning always interrupts me at close to the half way point of the commune. Of course this is while the temple and nearby waypoint nearby is contested.
Any work around for getting off a commune while AOE randomly appears everywhere while the temple is contested?
I’d just jump in and try it if I was at home. Thanks for the response!

I guess every single mesmer I fight is bad then. It’s been months since one beat me. I’m more afraid of good necros tbh.
What is your build? what equipment are you using?
I was too slow…
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/The-Spree-WvW-pistols-and-pots-movie-updated/first#post1148758
He has mad skills. Elixir, pistol build.
I don’t lose often to solo mesmers either. Have to watch for the dodge rolls to find the real mesmer and be ready to dodge when you see all the clones / illusions coming your way to explode. I haven’t been able to kill some of the tanky ones but they aren’t a threat to me either. I do not run with his build though.
Yet, sadly, the engineer and ranger will be the one to get nerfed again.
The truth in this statement hurts me because it’s true!
Engi’s get cool toys which means you can’t be good at anything, LOL.
ROFL! Great video! Thanks for taking the time to put it together.
I run with the TANKCAT build, which is fun but against other tanky classes I have some stalemates while running solo. They can’t kill me but I can’t always seal the deal on them either.
I prefer to run with the Engi over the necro and mesmer 80’s I have. It’s just enjoy WvW with the engi more.
Good game SoS/BG this week. We had lots of fun over on the JQ side. This kind of week is what makes t1 so special.
Blackgate mad respect to your pugs and guilds. I know it isnt easy with the numbers Sos and JQ bring out but when all things equal you hang with both of us easily.
What he said. Going from fighting SBI it’s nice to see another server actually trying for first place.
I’m at around 2k kills and have like 300ish badges. Condi kills you don’t see to get as much. I’ll play with my friend who is a pistol thief and although we have close to the amount of kills he’ll have almost twice the badges. We are not attacking the same target most of the time so it’s not that he’s out-damaging me on the enemy player. I think it has more to do with the amount of damage put down during a certain amount of time for your chances of a badge to be higher.
I started with a condi necro and now play a tank engineer.
(edited by MikeT.9428)
Play a ranger… and just auto-attack with the short bow.
Or there’s always the full signet warrior but you may have to occasionally dodge.
Ranger wins for the easiest class to PVE with IMO.
(edited by MikeT.9428)
I’m going with TANKCAT invulnerability length of time nerf and 100Nade build nerf.
I’ll put my rifle up for my ante since attempting to use it for anything other than CC is somewhat pointless.
I doubt it but it depends on whether it’s a percentage based thing across all classes or if they are just hitting a few specific abilities. Basically the problem is in zerg fights you either get immobilized or stunned and unless you have multiple stun breaks you get melted by AOE. The flame thower can only hit 3 people right now anyway so I don’t see it as a problem but then again I don’t think just because we get kits that don’t scale well and turrets that almost no one uses in WvW means we shouldn’t get a damage bump to put us more in line with the the more popular classes.
Can’t wait to create my very first character, a Charr Engineer.
A few off topic points. I don’t mean to offend you if you are a regular with MMO’s.
Don’t be a clicker, practice with the keyboard if you want to have a chance at WvW or PVP. You’ll need to use the mouse for camera control and/or movement.
PVE for the engi isn’t as easy as with other classes. Although the toolkit is pretty great for WvW. For PVE you might be better off with the flamethrower, bombkit, or grenades if you can stand them.
Good luck out there!
I only run with the mass when the groups following the commanders are relatively small. I play an engi so doing enough damage to get badges while running with a zerg is pretty difficult. I do love solo encounters or even 2 vs 1 as long as they both aren’t thieves. I normally run supply to repair walls or build seige or just get with a small group and hit camps. Zerg fighting isn’t fun for me unless I’m just trying to get my daily events done. I mainly just like to troll people. :-) other tanks normally end in a stalemate but those bursty classes I love to find farming yaks solo.
I hate the PVE objectives in WvW unless they serve some purpose to the server with control over them like the quaggans, centaurs, ogres…etc. I get really bored with PVE once I’ve run through the game a time or two then that only leaves WvW which I enjoy. I could get into sPvP if there were something other than controlling points which looses it’s fun pretty quick to me.
(edited by MikeT.9428)
I do prefer to WvW with the engi over the necro, and the mesmer 80’s that I have but in dungeons the mesmer shines compared to the engi. I could WvW with the mesmer too but they are too slow in travel and the engi is more fun to me in pvp.
Viable can mean different things to different people. Over-all the engi is weak but that doesn’t mean certain builds by talented players can’t get the job done.
I play the engi because he’s fun but not because he’s all that good at anything.
“Engineer feels weak compared to my guardian – what classes are the team looking to tweak?
(Host) – Engineer Grenade build was on the watch list before and it was changed accordingly. To be fair, the engineer is still awesome with the grenade build. (Colin) – yes that is what I run on my character and I agree.
We are looking at all professions at all times, we try not to just look at a single profession at any one time. That is a really dangerous thing to do and you are not look how it affects the entire game.
The guardian is intended to be meaty-tough, engineer is more for people who are looking to play with versatility, tricks, and gadgets. If there is something on engineer we need to tweak, we will take a look at it."
Nothing to see here. Move along…
Engineer works at intended. You either get to use a weapon kit or roll another class if you want to be better all around.
Junk enemies vit and toughness matter if you aren’t dodging at the right time. Most bosses I find the stats not very useful because normally they can take you down with whatever their “special attack” is regardless of what you have on. Dodging is the only way to not get insta-downed against some bosses.
I’d just say it depends on what dungeon you are running but in general dodging will save you many more times then having soldier gear (power, toughness, vitality) will. Especially against bosses.
LOL, I have an 80 necro and a engi. Like others have pointed out, my guess is they give the engi or necro a portal instead of fixing the crazy list of broken things they have.
Well I don’t know about 10 seconds as “IMMUNE” but if you include block in there then I could see close to 10 seconds.
Watch the TANKCAT video to get an idea of how long that build can go without you landing a hit before he gets inside a keep.
http://youtu.be/0pfO5s9pi0c about 30 seconds in.
(edited by MikeT.9428)
I’m even amazed you could comment while dueling an ele (and dealing with a necro and engi on top of that).
I thought the same thing. I’m like tunnel vision when combat starts… That’s probably one of the reasons he’s on top of his game, he doesn’t panic or waste cooldowns spamming all his available abilities at the same time. When I’m outnumbered I get a little rushed and find that I burn though too many things at once leaving me trying to stay alive while I should be keeping a few tricks up my sleeve to pressure on the target(s).
Guess I just miss my SBI…
For the record there will always be 2 vs 1. SBI just left SoS alone all weak and SoS ignored them until mid week then takes everything from them. So that left SoS and SBI vs JQ for the majority of the week. I’m just glad to see BG doesn’t lay down for SoS like SBI did. Staging attacks within a minute of each other on opposite sides of the map.
I accept this as legitimate war tactics and know it’s all part of WvW but it’s nice to have a new server that actually wants to win back in the mix.
SBI is just not a real T1 threat anymore, IMO.
Grats on your score to all the servers! It’s still pretty close right now. Stone Mist has been controlled by everyone at this point.

Who ever thought the giant grub was a good idea should read this thread.
Should I got for magic find gear instead of berserker?
That all depends on you. To begin with I’d say berserker. Once you know the dungeons and bosses well you could switch to magic find which can be crafted or bought. You will get a fair amount of money and dungeon tokens by running AC and COF and the armor sets from there should meet your needs of a semi tanky set and a high DPS set. Just make sure your inventory is more or less empty when you start running the dungeons because it tends to fill up fast if you have lots of random things you are carrying around. In a good group you can get through the dungeons pretty quick. In random PUGs you never know what you will get. I’ve been with great groups and I’ve been with terrible ones.
The thing with magic find gear is you are missing a stat bonus that’s replaced with magic find so either your damage or survivability could suffer a little. Once you know the dungeons you can wear whatever you’d like IMO.
My opinion is I play the engineer because it’s fun but I find the limited support the engi offers generally isn’t worth focusing on. I normally run the elixir gun in dungeons as support but I plan to use the necro or the mesmer as my main dungeon runner in the near future. The mediocre damage, and support just doesn’t work so great in a group setting IMO. I prefer running more or less solo in WvW as a tank. I’ll join an occasional zerg if I’m trying to get DE’s done or I’m not finding many roamers to attack.
And like John mentioned. I’d respec when switching between PVE and WvW. At least I do.
We have to do pve to pay for wvw
Most players fall into this category. I run dungeons when my funds get low. A few dungeon runs and I’m back blowing money on siege equipment. Plus you can get a nice set of dungeon gear out of this technique :-)
At most levels you have that lower DPS or squishy problem. As a lower level character you tend to have both for a while. For the dodge rolls get speedy kits with the first 10 points in the bottom trait line (tools) then the next to the bottom trait line (alchemy) with 10 points you can get invigorating speed which gives you vigor when you have swiftness. With these two traited you can basically have constant swiftness and vigor if you swap kits regularly. As you guess you will not be able to get away with a full elixir build with these traited though. So medkit or a weapon kit is a must to get these to function properly.
I’m with most of the engis that look at turrets as a joke for the most part. The net turret can come in handy at times but it doesn’t fire off often enough for me to equip it. The rifle seems to just be better at immobilizing.
I’d say do some crafting for a while LOL. Engis suck less at higher levels but you will be no super heavy hitter even with the rifle. The CC it offers is great against 1vs1 in pvp though. For PVE I ran rifle and flame thrower with random elixirs most of the time.
