Be cool if smoke actually vented from the gun or backpack in a cloud that lasted a few seconds and obscured vision. Though it’s not that anyone wants more particle effects in the game anywhere and it might just end up looking like a weird version of smokescreen so maybe not.

Someone suggested flamethrower 5 should be a 1 second smoke field. I love this idea since it opens up more combos. Elixir gun 4, turret blast or shield 4 for a bit of AoE stealth to prevent friendly stomps, throw wrench for a projectile boomerang blind, rifle 5 or rocket boots for getaway stealth. etc!

Need help against Necros.

Necros hard counter Engis mostly because of our limited condi removal. While power is better against them than condition damage, I would still say condi Necros counter any Engi build pretty good.

Hm, I suppose you’re right. But as a power engi I tend to cc them better with rifle and since my conditions don’t stick their heal isn’t as great so i never feel very disadvantaged.

Don’t forget to pick up your turret!

While yes it is a hard-counter, like how condition engineers are a hard-counter to thieves, one vulnerability to necros is cc. If you can disrupt their heal which has a 1-second cast-time, it’ll give you a big advantage. Big Ol’ Bomb + magnet is a pretty good combo with your build.

You might wanna use gear shield early on the fight to anticipate signet of spite which is where a large amount of cover conditions come from and of course stick to them like glue. Use shield 4 to interrupt their heal!

Lastly. I would personally drop elixir gun and get grenade kit for the added pressure.

They’ll always be a bane to you though especially with the first minor alchemy trait which they can predict and corrupt when it procs.

Power engi is always an option though, I haven’t seen any hard counters to that yet.

I like knight’s amulet a lot more. My build isn’t that far off from yours. ArrDee is right though, you’ll want either invigorating speed or Adrenal implants.

Your sigils seem a bit off. One is for bursting and the other isn’t. I don’t know how I feel about intelligence sigil on this build since our main damage comes from grenades and they’re a bunch of small hits. I guess if you use it for rifle 5 but still. Sigil of hydromancy hits harder than fire sigil and it chills so I use that instead now. It’s melee range but that’s my favorite range on engi anyway.

They are not that good because you can achieve 100% duration for all your condis through food buffs, giver weapons, nightmare runes, etc. That includes burning. They are a good choice, however, if you decide for whatever reason not to use food buffs.

Well you don’t have to assume he won’t use food! Maybe he likes saffron bread.

Anyway! Runes of grenth are also fun for a condition engi when coupled with hydromancy sigil. Runes of balth are getting some hate at the moment but i don’t know how you feel about that.

I don’t know, I love the new experimental turret trait. In dungeons I already used healing turret and thumper turret (for its 3 blast finishers yay) now I’m using fire turret as well for the AoE might.

In spvp flame turret and this trait goes great with a condi build since with runes of Balthazar it can keep someone burned forever, and with the hitbox fix it doesn’t die randomly all the time. AND since I also used accelerant-packed turrets trait it’s even better. Also the toolbelt is a long burn/fire field.

Throw in supply crate in the mix and you get even more might/boons. The only downside is that I’m more vulnerable to boon-hate but whatever!

I wish they’d just change AR entirely though. I can see why they’d nerf it but now it’s not worth being a GM trait.

My tactic is to dump everything you can on them from the get go then CC them with supply drop, shield stun and knock back along with a tool kit magnet pull. What that does is gives to conditions time to eat away at the necro. If you’re really good, you can time these interrupts whenever you see the necro raise his hand signaling that he’s going to pop his heal which cures all conditions.

If you make sure he’s blinded with grenade, static shot, or the bomb blind, his transfer conditions (plague signet if you spot him with it) should miss you.

If that fails. I gotta run like crazy because my only form of condition removal is from heal turret. Luckily most necros are slow and with my rocket boots chills, cripples, and swiftness I can kite until my CC is back.

Yup! I used to die to them ALL the time until I abused their main weakness. CC. Sometimes I go over to their sub-forum to look for a thread about how they lack stability despite being slow and tanky and feed on their tears.

Engineer vs Mesmer

In my personal opinion. Mesmer is better at solo roaming and dueling. Engi isn’t far behind at all though.

In zerg wvw mesmer is better mostly because of how useful it is to portal golems or portal bomb.

For dungeons either can be great. Mesmers are usually more wanted because it’s easier for new people to use (phantasm pistol build and time warp) and experienced mesmers can offer a lot of utility from reflects to portal.

An engi can do just as good or even better (lots of might stacking potential among other things) but it’s not a beginner friendly class so a party will have to hope you know what you’re doing. If you do you can really wow some people.

With conditions Engineers win. A wvw condition mesmer might not be as strong as an engi but it’s safer since most condition builds have a good number of stealthing abilities. (Again Engineers have access to all this too just harder to pull off). In pve I’d never recommend conditions on any profession but engineers are one of the two classes that can get away with it.

General PvE It’s hard to say since any profession works there and the mesmer’s lack of speed can easily be fixed with runes of centaur/speed/traveler

Thieves are one of the easier classes to fight as Eng IMO. Eng so many counters Vs. them. Necros on the other hand…

Necros have gotten a lot easier for me once I realized how vulnerable they are to ccs. I can imagine how frustrated they must be when I keep interrupting their op heal. They’re very tanky but lack vigor and stability.

They suck the most when they’re not alone. Same with hammer warriors. Necro’s Chill and Warrior’s stuns make it way too easy to be burst down by their friends.

It seems to happen in actions with long wind-ups. Like stomping or the third hit in the toolkit 1 chain. Also happens sometimes when I use toolkit 5.

What to do about Warriors in WvW

Dont expect to be able to kill every build with your own one. It will never work and this is just one example.

I do realize he is built as a direct counter to me, so how do I build to counter him? I’ve been using protection injection + stabilized armor+ saffron bread to get -70% damage reduction while stunned, then tank through the stun while hes in my fire bomb field, and guess who ends up taking more damage? Me, and this is with 20+ stacks of might ~2200 condi dmg.

I’m guessing you’re being sarcastic to Writetypers response, but it’s what I do against those warriors! If it’s 1v1 without anyone getting in the way I just keep applying pressure, even at base duration our poison grenades last a ridiculously long time if they stupidly decide to stay in them. That’ll take care of his healing, then just keep applying pressure, bomb kit and grenade kit are great for kiting melee-ers.

Eventually I’ll whittle their hp down (slowly) and they’ll either die or run away. If you can get in the groove of their attacks it becomes easier to dodge them; they tend to use predictable combos and the profession falls under one of the puny classes that has a CD on weapon swap. Practice helps!

Also, if you have bomb kit and grenade kit make sure you go as defensive as possible with everything else. This means p/s and the final utility being something utilititable. I use tool kit for the long block and nails.

Lastly, spamming your slows and blinds, even if they don’t last long, will ruin his rhythm and make it easier to kite/predict him.

Since the recent patch my female Asura has been making a new sound, it’s rather unfitting and I’m wondering if it’s intended or a glitch. It sounds better suited for a high fall than using miscellaneous skills or stomping.

I love the new Elixir B, it’s great for rifle burst builds since you can pop the boons + stability and launch your foe, if they don’t have a stun breaker they’re toast.

Engineers don’t have a move like that. Maybe it was super shoes? With 50% added speed it can look ridiculously quick especially for an asura engi. I can’t think of anything else that’d allow an engineer to circle around a target.

I personally prefer rocket boots because when I see a zerg running at me, I use my stealth combo, and the zerg always always ALWAYS runs to my last location and spams AoEs. Using acid bomb gets me revealed with its lingering DoT. Also I never wanted to get used to an about-face button so I go with rocket boots.

Personal preference yay!

Wow I use a similar build, same utilities, but 30/0/0/15/25. I use leg mods instead of SD and enhanced performance instead of short fuse since, like Rozbuska mentioned, all we really need is fire bomb which has a short CD already.

I have perma vigor on the alchemy line so that it works with enduring damage, and the last 5 points are just for boon duration.

Personally I use runes that give me +60% might duration. I pug a lot so I expect no one else to stack might. If I ran with people I knew regularly I’d go with Rozbuska advice.

A really cool feature of the build you didn’t emphasize is you can stack 12 seconds of stealth with smoke bomb giving you the ability to create a pseudo refuge ~

Oh! and on your high-stack combo, if you put BOB right before the fire field you can squeeze in Acid Bomb at the end for 21 might stacks yayy.

The reason why I like 30 in explosives line unlike most bomb builds is you can easily grab grenadier and short fuse (optional) and grab grenade kit to deal with the few specific bosses that are just easier to range.

@Ojimaru If you overcharge your thumper turret and explode it before it can attack, it’ll count as two blast finishers. (try it)

One of the Asura in the jail at the bottom floor of Rata Sum was jailed for that reason. The plaque besides his cell warns you to stay away or you might “catch his stupid.” It’s cruel but funny.

I have a similar issue, mine is just inconsistent frame-rate when I’m moving around. Like it’ll stutter suddenly then go back to being smooth then stutter again. This started today as well.

PVE Fractals / Dungeons Build?

I haven’t tried this in fractals but in dungeons I run this build.

It involves might stacking, I first use all blast finishers except for the elite back-to-back on the fire field with bomb kit to give the group 21 stacks of might, then just keep using bomb kit for dps while using the blast finishers as they come out of CD.

It might have a steep learning curve but once you get a hang of it you can consistently keep 15+ stacks of might on to you group while providing decent heal/condition removal with healing turret. Chocolate omnomberry cream helps for food.

When i absolutely need range (like with lupi) I swap elixir gun to grenades, explosive gunpowder trait to grenadier and leg mods to scope.

I also love it because no one expects an engineer to give a group 12 seconds of stealth.
