This thread gives me hope, that the ones responsible for ranger-balance can do their work better.
It’s also a very serious thread about ranger’s weaknesses and some good hints for doing it better.

You mean, compared with other ranger-builds, this build does dmg, yeah.
But compared with other classes, our power-dmg is ridiculous. (warrior, powernec, guardian, ele, thief, and I think even engineer can do better)
Stealth itself is has a broken balance. would be much better, if stealth ends, if you got stunned/kicked/feared etc.
And for Rangers I think, stealth isn’t the way how to play them. On the other side it seems, even the developers don’t have any idea what a ranger should be.
No, rangers can’t do decent dmg. You can forget power-based builds, they are just a joke, compared to other classes.
We can do a little bit better condition damage, but other classes like mesmer, engineer, thief, necromancer are much better at this.
We don’t have any burst dmg (rapid fire is a joke: with luck 20k dmg in 4,5 secs, IF the enemy doesn’t dodge), our pet has a bad KI (needs 5 secs to do ANYTHING if swapped infight, you can easily kite it)
So, yeah. Ranger is useless, compared with other classes, that’s why some groups even don’t want rangers in pve/wvw-groups. The only thing we maybe are good at is immobilising (frost, traps, etc), but you can counter that easily with condition removal.
Most argue, that Rangers are very good at movement. Might be true, but every thief and warrior can move faster, kite better than ranger, and guardian even got better traits while dodging.
I don’t know who is responsible for ranger-balance, but he/she should look for a new job.
No more trenchcoats for medium armor. Please.
First, I wanted to mention I like the idea of the gemstore for income, instead of monthly fees. On this way the team gets good money to work on a lot new contents, upcoming soon, I hope.
When the new Flame Armor was presented in the gemstore, something seems familiar to me. So i looked up my old armors and what I found was this:
The Flamewalker Medium Armor was nearly the same skin like the (medium) Invader-Armor, you can buy in WvW.
So the designers decided to set 800 gems (that’s the price for 1 characterslot) as a price for a existing armor with some flame effects.
Come on, I know you can do this better!
Would also be a good time to stop trenchcoating the whole medium armor.
If ANet hat realeased GW2 with a well-planned home-instance with story and unlockable stuff/npcs (usefull equipment, not only nodes..), they could have overhauled Blizzard with content. Now it just seems, ANet is waiting for someone to come up with an idea and try to implement it later in GW2.
I would be happy, if we could have content like this every 6-9 months, instead of this 2-weekly-tradingpost-filling stuff.

I am playing ranger since the beta and changed my builds like pants (got about 7 exotic armor-sets in my bank only for my ranger).
I’m sick of being a bait in WvW just because i want to play a powerranger.
I have good movement (at least as much a ranger can have), but all other classes have more durability/better healingskills/more movement/stronger bursts.
I can choose between avoid most hits, but dealing nearly no damage or a little bit damage and drop hp instant over the half.
Is there any possibility to play a good power/crit-based ranger in WvW AND be an strong opponent against other classes (should not depend on pets, because they are just incredible slow in reactiontime)?

Although ANet seems to hate this profession, he’s my favourite character.
I made some calculations like this by myself (that’s the reason why i use axe in my critbuild) and i was just surprised like you.
We got good autohit-attacks, but other classes have more effective skills on 2-5 than we do.
Every class has at least 1 burst ability on every weapon, often also a defense. the “burst” of rangers is just funny, i’ve seen thieves just ignoring my rapid fire or hunter’s call (the skills of other weapons could barely called bursts..).
It’s heavy for me, because i really loved the Ranger, but actually i’m just sick of having no chance against other classes in WvW and just try to get away as quick as i can.
Maybe i go for warrior, since the last patch they have nearly better movement than the ranger… and a lot more potential than petkeepers.
Ranger is my favourite class in Guild Wars 2. I played my Ranger since the Beta (most time in WvWvW) and experimented a lot with builds (got 6 different armor-sets in my bank, only for my ranger).
I like to roam in WvW, so i often have the possibility to fight other classes and sometimes real good player of their classes.
Ranger was always a hard class, because you need to move around a lot, but in the last months, it’s getting harder and harder to keep up with other classes.
Some months after beta you could win quite easy against casual players, if you know you class and time skills good.
Meanwhile you have to use any possibility to win against casual thieves, eles, mesmer, and so on.
And if you are lucky and fight against someone who can really control his class, you have no chance.
i don’t mean, that you have just bad luck, using a skill at wrong time.
It’s impossible for a ranger to win against other superb played classes, because they got much higher potential in one build, than we ever had in the whole class.
The update of June seems just like the kick out of the door for us.
I don’t think the devs even play ranger , they must have at least recognised the great imbalance with other classes.
Oh no…i hope, ANet doesn’t see this video or they will nerf the ranger again -.-
Good Ideas, although some things would need a rework.
The biggest advantage of stealth at the moment is the small time between stealths. If Thiefes would be longer visible, other classes have at least a chance to beat them up and it wouldn’t be that easy to finish a fight whenever a thief wants and requires more thinking from the thiefplayers.
I hope, Anet changes something soon, can’t see everyone running with d/p around, thief could be better than using just 1 strong build.
I don’t want to have to play a condition-bunker to play ranger not kittenty.
Still wiping with 0/10/30/30/0 (used the new trait for perma-swift).
Although i’m tending to play my guardian more often since the last weeks
1) Complete rework of the Traits. Intelligent Traitcombinations (for instance: Longbow and Shortbow Skillreduction are 1 Trait, but what does a conditionweapon should do with crit and precision?).
I’m just sick of traiting to Grandmaster, so i have 1 good Utility, while other classes have the same utility without traiting in the skill….and just got some other “meh”-Traits on the way to grandmaster.
2) I want the Ranger not to be good with just one build. I have no problem with a difficult class, but at least i want to have a CHANCE to be as good as other (well played) classes, wheter i play crit or condition damage.
If i prefer crit dmg i should be able to play a ranger on crit with equal chances in combat like a condition-ranger.
3) Never ever nerf the ranger with the reasen “(s)he has a pet”!!
Thiefes get no damage reduction because they have stealth; eles are strong althought their incredible flexible utilitys because of the elements; guardians can deal huge damage in close combat and heal even on berserker the hell out of the lifepool.
Don’t let the ranger suffer for his special ability, other classes have in an equal way.
I don’t know why there are so many problems and weaknesses with the ranger.
What i see ingame with patches and developments, lets me think that you guys just hate this class and implemented it, because “every mmo needs a pet-class”

The Idea of a controllable blast finisher for rangers would be great, and after searching on guildwiki, i found out, that every class except ranger has at least 1 combofield (warriors just got fire from longbow, but a mass of finishers) AND at least 1 kind of every combofinisher!
And when i’m talking about combofinisher, i mean controllable abilitys like “i will now jump through this waterfield so it heals me” and not “wait for my drake to use his explosion maybe in the waterfield”.
Same problem goes for the poisonfield of spiders, that we can’t controll.
At least make the only usable explosionfinisher of rangers (of the drake) to an ability we can use with F2, although i would prefer a weaponskill.
If you set down our damage because we have a pet, please give us at least the possibility to controll the most important skill of our pets directly!
Every other class can controll when and how it uses combo-abilitys.
This would be a good step in the right direction to keep the ranger-balance close to the other classes.

Guardians
<- playing ranger quite well
Reason: Thieves and Mesmers are easy going, they have low resistance and going down fast.
Guardians have ugly defense-skills and kann heal up their live completely felt about 2-3 times. and after some time all your skills are on cd and then the guardian plays easy with you in close combat.
(But if we take a look at war winning skills: mesmer portal)
Same business as usual.
We (ER) have big problems with performance (invisible zergs).
I’m sure the other two servers have the same problems, but you guys got some awesome scouts and fast zerg-reaction ( we are “collecting” our men about 30sec-1 min until we start running).
Now we’ve got very low moral even during the weekend (and barely raidlead except BB-Borderlands).
Until we start doing our homeworks (raid movement, more big guilds instead of some small etc), we won’t stand a chance against international servers.
Should be an easy week for SR (and BB with nightcapping).
My Ranger (used in WvW):
Used Skills:
Sword/Horn, Longbow (Sometimes i prefer Sword/Axe, but speedbuff is necessary and 10% Signet is crap)
Conditions work nice in PvP, but not in WvW, that’s the reason why is use longbow.
Other Skills:
Healing Spring, , Zephyr, Signet of Stone, Lightning Reflexes (or Muddy Terrain in zergs)
Entangle
Traits:
30 Marksman
Signet Mastery, Piercing Arrows, Signet of Beastmaster (for 6 sec unv…. opening strikes are crap)
20 Skirmishing
Sharpened Edges (no better Trait at this Lvl), Quick Draw (more often Rapid Fire)
20
Wilderness Knowledge (self-explaining… i’m using 3 Survivalskills), Hide in Plain Sight
(maybe Shared Anguish, but i prefer the possibility to break enemie’s targeting)
Used Pets: Raven, Owl (Nice Dmg, kinda-useful skills)
With this Build i can get most classes in WvW (even thiefes), IF the guys don’t use their classes at limit.
I think i’m a quite good ranger (not the best), but i have no chance against thieves, guardians, mesmers playing their class excellent.
Ranger only becomes effective, when you use all your weapon skills in the right moment.
To make your skills effective you have to use a lot of traits (for instance signet of stone… 30 points in Marksman with crap standart trait opening attack)
You have to know, when you need to give up a fight and escape
(hornet sting, turn, monarch’s leap are awesome at this), and when to go in close fight (thieves).
You have to decide if you use your quickness for your bow or your sword (also fine damage).
Summary: You have to play your ranger at the limit to fight other classes, but if the other classes do the same, you have no chance. My advantage in WvW until now is,
that most of the others can’t play their classes effective.
PS: Forgot my equipment: Knight’s armor (Toughness, Prec, Power), berserc accessory/weapons, Precision-Bufffood, Rune of the Pack-Set
