In PvE you’re gonna want ferocity for party.
In WvW/PvP you’re gonna want Maliscious Reprisal (unblockable attacks on block).
So while it’s pretty cool I can’t really see where RL will fit in.
I wouldn’t agree with swapping FS and AP that would make the Adept tier pretty b0rked, as has been pointed out, with 3 great dps traits in contention with one another. RL being the least important IMO as it’s more of a sustained dps PvE trait.
Well Gav, that wouldn’t fix the problem at hand in the slightest (if it is a problem to begin with).
Thanks for the responses.
No, I havn’t played Revenant at all but I’m looking at this from a DPS oriented Shiro Revenant. I’d like to mix in some nice support and heals as it reminds me of the idea of my Aion Chanter.
However, as I mentioned every character near enough has some form of instant invulnerability. Warrior being the most obvious with up to 2 5second Endure Pains. This plus some form on instant on demand stability allows a character to successfully reacha target, down them or whatever course of actions is needed, and get out, player skill permitting.
Seems I’m going to have to choose betwee Jalis and Ventari? Which seems to be a shame, but we can’t have our cake and eat it, I suppose.
Looking forwards to the next playtest, so I can, you know, actually play the class I’m theorycrafting…
Edit:
Mobility and an energy sigil will help me out with what I’m asking for, I know. I’m hoping for a Invulnerability skill somewhere
Then melee Revenants might have a very difficult time in WvW…
edit:
Unless the Sword4 ability works like its been portrayed in that it will block melee and ranged without ending the skill channel. Hm.
(edited by Neomir.7493)
I havn’t tested the Rev yet but I am theorycrafting a build I think will fit my playstyle.
A lack of on demand stability can be played around with clever dodge rolls, it might seem, but for me I need a ‘zergdiving’ (there, I said it) tool.
Will Revenant have any sort of mist form/endure pain/stone signet/distortion/invuln/exlixir s type of ability? Does it have one already? If it did would it be considered too powerful? I.e. There’s a reason Warrior doesn’t get protection etc.
Interested to hear.
This again.
Obsidian Sanctum.
They’ve put the Passive 25% there so you can change up your runes for WvW, if you choose to go into air you can substitute Traveler or Speed runes for anything, namely something with more power. Air line gives you rune freedom in WvW.
As for 25% movement speed vs Swiftness vs Superspeed…
Just try it, you’ll be amazed.
This ability with corresponding traits is flat-out broken and needs to be adjusted to be more inline with the theme of the game; that being Guild Wars and not QuakeLive.
How about a buff that you can buy from a WvW vendor for x Badges that gives -33% to all consumable costs for x amount of purchases?
I swear to Grenth, if I could ride a Moa around all day constantly screaching at people and dazing them in the middle of whatever they’re trying to do, I won’t feel natural light again for a good 4 months. Maybe longer.
The level 80 versions of most of the ‘useful’ foods are expensive, but are not gamebreaking compared to their much more affordable level 60 counterparts. A vendor selling this lvl 80 food for ‘copper’ would straight up ruin a big part of the economy.
I run with full Knight armour, zerker weaps, and a mixture of zerker/cav trinkets. I play almost exclusively solo in WvW and attack literally anything and everything, probing for weak players and spreading out smaller groups, using the strengths of a mobility warrior to my advantage. I do follow pug warbands quite often however, so having a bit of damage rather than just tanking damage is useful.
For my build and playstyle it performs well… I run GS with mostly Sw/Sh but sometimes Hammer or Axe or Mace. I also use the same build with 1 or 2 minor exceptions.
Right now I’m at 3.1k armour rating. With full Knights you’d be at roughly 3.4k, but 100 of this is from the useless Thick Skin minor trait. It’s very misleading, annoying, and should be removed, Buuut I digress.
Knight’s is more useful now than before the crit dmg changes as ferocity is not the be-all-end-all stat, I feel. But I’ve only recently started playing again.
I run 187% crit damage on my build and have no problems putting out enough damage – coming across squishy players is not uncommon in WvW.

(100b cast time is long as kitten compared to a single stab)
Thanks for clearing this up.
Lol, there’s no magic build that will enable you to win outnumbered fights.
Find a build you feel comfortable with generally, and tweak it to what you find you need to play how you want.
Personally I flick between GS+Sw/sh with knight or cav+zerk trinkets and Axe/Shield zerker. However I’m feeling the pull of the dark side (warr condi build) lately…
My Sword build is tankier as I need to be able to take the dmg when comboing as I obviously can’t move. But is hypermobile to jump to all corners of a fight to mitigate damage and spread/lead enemies where is beneficial for me and anyone else around me.
Axe is more damage oriented as I can choose when to burst with a bit more freedom. both work well but axe is more suited to dueling in my experience due to the increased burst and lessened mobility, as I tend to try and get kills wherever I see them so this means separating players from groups if theyre silly enough to follow. Also I love mobility and sword/shield kind of setups, so I made a build that works.
Take info you find applicable to you as a player from the forums and adapt a build. Theres plenty of premades out there already so start with one of those and see how you get on. Pick a style/weapon set you enjoy and practice it, and adapt it for how you want to play.
And you can’t go wrong with stances in WvW either, really useful for fighting outnumbered.
Roaming? GS/SW-WH is a running build, can’t kill anything
Mhmm…
Not sure about the rest but calling in a banner, and subsequently planting, are both blast finishers. Blast finishers are self explanatory.
Consider Rune of Resistance if you want a cheaper alternative to Melandru while keeping some -condi.
You could go full zerk with them, mandatory 4points into toughness, a cavalier piece here and there and you can hit pretty high toughness while maintaining damage, if thats your aim.
It’s a very effective build, but more suited to 1v1, or maybe group play. This is because you need to sit there and 100b someone in the face.
Theyre stunned for donkeys years and eating huge crit chance 100b while you lel and build up might… sounds great huh? But you’re sitting there too. I don’t need to explain how this is a disadvantage solo roaming, so I won’t.
I solo roam on my Warrior almost extesively, and I can say that if you’re looking to lock people down and 100b them to death, the typical sword+x/gs is much more effective in my opinion because:
- Obviously condi is not a stun, but locking people down with the swords root can last up to 5+ seconds, and is aoe. You can and will lock down multiple bads with no cleanse for a full 100b combo.
- Sword is better for mobility, which personally is my roaming warriors best defence when out ganking (can tank zergs too though lolezmoderawriorop). Also the leap alleviates some of the problems mace has with a 100b build.
- Sword is better for autoattack, which is often times much more reliable vs low toughness characters than trying to land a immob.
- Final thrust is cool as kitten.
I always carry multiple weapons and retrait to whatever I feel like, but Skullcrack is a gimmick build for me to use when I’m bored or want to try something fresh out whereas sw+sh/gs is a mainstay due to its damage, versatility and mobility. Saying that, I will be logging in soon and hunting for some skulls to crack, as you really should be using whatever you feel most comfy with and can play to full effect rather than what you can’t but you’ve been told it’s uber.
I’ve run s+sh/gs extensively when solo roaming in WvW and personally I find it a very useful power weapon. Its auto hits moderately hard when your stacked, but exceptionally fast, so the DPS is rounded out compared to other weapons. This is especially useful seeing as GS isn’t the best ‘aa pressure’ weapon, so it complements it well. And the AoE immobilize CAN be somewhat aimed to catch multiple bads players in your 100b.
There seems to be some delay when doing this combo though and it may be due to the channelling nature of sword f1 that ‘sheathing’ may alleviate, but I don’t see why swapping after the immob to GS should have to have ANY sort of delay, although if instead of spamming your combo buttons you simply press them firmly and on their own, the combo seems to work better. Button mashing is techinally a hindrance when using this combo, as in my experience it works better methodically pressing the keys at the right time. This last part is why I have been roaming with Axe/GS lately instead of sword. Sword is actually pretty clunky and not very smooth.
Funny people still compare skills like for like…
Swords immob is used to hold enemy in place for your 100b when roaming, and is self explanatory in group play. Long duration aoe root, ‘easily’ cleansed and can be unreliable aiming for multiple targets.
Oh, and I’d go with Rifle GS. Intel sigil can be fun here so you don’t need to spec too heavily into a trait line for burst skill crit…
I would NEVER go into wvw without my trusty GS, or at least a 1h sword.
Nice build, hope this doesn’t become fotm.
Really, guys?

OP, get enough survivability/toughness and condi cleanse or reduction that you feel comfy with, throw in a pinch of run speed for good measure, and sprinkle as much dps on top as you can. You’ll have to crack a few eggs to find your perfect recipe, as everyone has their own preferred taste.
GS burst skill is rather part of it’s utility; it’s situational but you can get some extra fury, which is always nice.
100B is it’s burst, and if you can’t set this up you kind of need to look into the class more, as Warrior can rely on setting up huge burst through swapping weapons… I mostly solo roam with sw/sh and GS and for me it is the best set of weapons for damage and mobility.
You could set up 100b with Mace, or even hammer. Mace is very effective but sword gives longer time to damage, with obvious tradeoffs. GS damage is weak if you run axe, as you can’t set up 100b, but you get damage from axe burst already… so that makes it personal preference.
Hi.
I rarely PvE and I notice Diminishing Returns is very annoying if your farming a specific dungeon path (cof p1). I need to build up a load of tokens for alts and it couldn’t hurt to salvage for ectos, so how do I farm dungeons and avoid hitting DR? How do you guys farm effectively and avoid this? Can it be done or do I have to limit my farming and be forced to do ‘other things’?
I’ve levelled from 55-80 today in about 9-10 hours, with boosters and crating and knowing roughly where to go.
I was using Sword+Torch/flame trap with knights until 65 then a mix of whatever and rampager because this is what I could get off the AH.
Protip: Drake pets are available at 60, I think. Get 2 as soon as you can because their basic skills cleave and their actives are crazy good for pve levelling, huge bouncing damage, not aoe, so it hits everything. I aggro as many mobs in an area and melt them.
With Guardian it might push the class over the top in terms of damage mitigation, you could literally chain aegis and invuln’s.
It gives the engineer the option for some nice passive resilience which the class needs with certain builds.
Any high-very high pop server will have something fun happening on it, and won’t be too zergy if you pick a silver league server.
Warriors pretty much play themselves at the moment.
I run a Sw/Sh+GS warrior and can run rings around multiple enemies without breaking a sweat. I do this to separate a target then start working on them… for you, this would mean you get all the aggro, can take it, and provide openings for your thief partner. If he starts ganking and takes aggro, you can wade in with your immobilizes and stuns and assist on whoever he’s fighting.
Unfortunately you’re complaining about human nature, and blaming the games fundamental design. If this were the case, it would be the same on all servers, which definitely isn’t true.
WvW/RvR in all games has always been driven by the players, and GW2 is no exception.
The maps in GW2 WvW are small and getting a bit stale, and EOTM didn’t really do anythnig to help regarding this as it serves as a disconnect from the hardcore WvW experience, other than that I personally don’t have any problems with it.
I honestly find my ele easier to play well than my mesmer. I just don’t get on with that class.
So play whichever you have the best ‘feeling’ for you you’ll be a better player with it.
As for ele, that spec can work but the video is heavily skewed;
His gear is the best, his opponents are literally the worst (as in no situational awareness at all and cant use a keyboard) and he relies on multiple damage multipliers that stop working when hes below 90% hp, if I remmeber correctly. Also, celestial is key to his stats and is getting completely revamped soon, so watch this space…
(edited by Neomir.7493)
You need toughness for wvw.
A minimum of 2500 for any class, and a recommended amount of 2800.
Even then, this won’t do much other than keep small hits to a minimum, you need to learn to avoid big hits and position yourself so you aren’t focussed.
You also want to try and squeeze in some sustain aka life regen other than your heal, and -condi removal and/or -duration.
You also want a 25% run speed boost but this is personal preference.
Ranger can get all of them very easily, but you will have to make sacrifices.
I think the problem they had is with building stacks and SUBSTITUTING the stacking weapon with another. You can no longer build stacks and REMOVE the stacking weapon. You will have to keep it equipped but can use your weapon swap with the stacks, so you will be forced to keep a stacking weapon on all the time. Which seems logical and fair if you ask me, but AN didn’t so lets see…
If you lose your stacks swapping your weapons, somethnig that afaik is unique to Guild Wars regarding mmo’s, then ANET will become utterly legendary for counterintuitive game design.
Nice video.
RIP celestial damage.
Bring on April 15th… I’ve got so much saved up waiting for it that it’s getting boring to play because I think everything changes.
it just got annoying, and, eventually, repetitive.
+1 Really can’t stand it anymore. SD is where it’s at, also the much faster pace suits me more. D/P is very clunky especially after the init regen fix.
Super-effective at it’s job, however…
1. Buff pet speed by 30%. Change the existing pet run speed trait to ‘Pet buffs now activate on the ranger rather than the pet and are reducted by 10%’
With a bit of tinkering to the buffs providded by pets (durations, cooldowns whatever) Ranger can now support his ally’s and be an useful member of the party due to his class mechanic, rather than a hindrance, some might argue.
2. Back when the game came out rangers were really OP with their 100% endurance regen, easy access to multiple quickness that worked at 100% efficiency. This was hit hard and for good reasons but Bows are not as fun as they should be. I understand that if they were everyone would be rolling a ranger though and it’s good AN didn’t make their ranger like an Aion ranger… however, there isn’t much to make you feel powerful because quickness is less than useful now, and Longbow is basicly a bit repetitive (if handy…).
I suggest putting the quickness on pet swap to 10points in BM tree.
Moving EITHER Piercing Arrows or Eagle Eye to 10points in Power tree. Piercing is necessary for wvw and it severely limits build choices because of this for bow wielding power setups.
A suggestion is to ignore all of this and add to zephyrs speed so that quickness works at 100% efficiency, giving rangers back their signature quickness so that they can hard-res team mates well, have deadly sustained damage capable of pressuring opponents, and become a useful stomper. This change, as a whole, enforces their dps+support nature without making them into the ‘easy acess uber quickness machinegun shortbow did I evade your attack again’ user they were before.
Specific Game Mode
WvW
Proposal Overview
Making bows more fun.
Giving the ranger more support options.
Goal of Proposal
Ranger team support through buffs and dps.
Proposal Functionality
Quickness might have to be separated into a ranger specific buff.
Associated Risks
1. Pets becoming too strong.
2. LB2 becoming OP, might need a % damage decrease if it’s easiest to use it in conjunction with swiftness.
I like interactive threads, hurp.

S/D acro is a really fun non-stealth build. Try it out.
Thanks for the post Taniki, informative.
Also having these exact same problems; Time of day login, LA/WvW unplayable due to the lag/skill lag. Chat remains fine during these issues.
Also BT is my ISP.
Other games are fine.
While I ofcourse understand it can’t be magicly fixed, I would like AN to at least acknowledge this issue as existing as in its current form, as they have done with the Mac fps issues. I cannot play the game at all and it seems a fair few other people have this.
Very strange.
I’m actually going to agree with Buku, While I personally have nothing against GvG and that they should be able to PvP in World vs World and the game needs separate things like that in World vs World to Thrive…I also don’t think very highly of the fights.
They’re not enjoyable to watch, They rely on the terrible mechanics of this game, 20vs20 is just a freakin horrible cop out by bad players who don’t want to appear bad.
If you’re going to do GvG in this game, 5vs5 or better in my opinion would be 10 vs 10. That way it doesn’t become a mass of suck to watch and you can actually see individual players who are good.
This is an old DAOC video
That’s a lot more viewable then GvG crap in this game
tried suggesting this in my old guild numerous times but gvg is only ‘cool’ if you do it 15+, whiich is dumb imo for the reasons you pointed out. Its fun and people who enjoy it are entitled to it if they want, but wvw is not a gvg mode. it IS a zerg based mode.
elitism and sensationalism seem to go hand in hand in this game. the bloodlust buff is a great change to encourage action, and could serve as a focus point for ‘proper’ guilds to fight the enemy servers, not the ones that are only interested in gvg or ‘good fights only’. right now its too cool to say ‘i only gvg cos points are for noobs and im not a noob lolol’ and something needs to be done to get these players interested in a game mode they do enjoy and stop trying to make wvw something it’s not; an organized duel with rules and goodmanner/badmanner. that’s spvp.
because for a good few months they had the majority vote and people actually went along with it. been saying this for a long time and im glad a few people are starting to be more vocal about it, as in this game and it’s forums, people are very linear when it comes to trying new things out. discussion often serves as the vehicle needed to shift parts of the games meta i.e. first we had a focus by hardcore wvw’ers (generally speaking ofcourse) on points and emplacements. then came roaming. then dueling, then gvg. for a while the dueling/gvg meta really changed wvw and made it suck as people attitudes got really stinky only able to see the current trend and not think past it, not with this buff and the gvg ‘issue’ coming to the fore, as long as people KEEP being vocal AN will have to break and give us a statement about what the deal is, and why they aren’t providing proper gvg support outside of wvw. your game is called GUILD. WARS, arenanet. wvw is the war yes, but you should at least be vocal about gvg support outside of this.
cant wait for this freaking buff to wvw and for my solo roaming guardian to be fun again seeing how long I can bunker one of these points with my personal cannon. buff up ? > cannon pewpewpew!
AN you NEED to kill off this ‘gvg is the real wvw’ notion from guilds. We both know it’s wrong, and you should have implemented a proper GvG function from the start, not have players create an ad-hoc mode for themselves from a pre-existing game mode where the aims and interests of players clash. That is to say guilds should be present in WvW, as guilds ARE WvW. The reason for the burgeoning GvG scene (which is incredibly fun, I would personally argue it has no place in WvW) is that people burnt out. Maybe sooner than you (arenanet) might have thought; definitely faster than I thought. Lightweights. So, give them a shiny carrot, because it’s obviously what a lot of guilds need. I dunno what this cpuld be if I’m honest I have no suggestions unfortunately, because I honestly feel the lack of interest from a lot of guilds is irrepairable. So at least give them an area out of wvw they can fight each other; same server fights, on the home server. Leave WvW as it should be; open world. Provide the means for a competitive gvg, but limit it to home servers only so it doesn’t take over the game. It is a suggestion, open for critique. But not if you think ‘I WANNA GVG AND ITS MAI RIGHT TO COS I PAY MY MONEY SO GTFO MY FUN, MAI FUN MORE IMPORTANT THAN URS’. Grow up and contribute meaningfully.
At least with something similar to this suggestion there is an option. At the moment there is none, and whether there should be or not (thats a debate about what WoW did to us… shiny shiny gimme gimme. THX BRIZZARD), having an option where there is none will only make things better, currently.
It’s sad. I’d consider myself a long-time RvR player and I’m saddened that the notion of ‘Realm Pride’ has pretty much left a lot of guilds, maybe entire servers.
Roll a warrior definitely.
Mesmer gs can ‘1shot’ people pretty well, especially with gs bounce and mantra of pain, but you won’t be getting many shatters as they can be hard to utilize in this type of build when enemies are killing them, unlike…
…warrior rifle channel and sKillshot 1shotting anyone. And these are more readily available than the mesmer ranged combo. Not to mention slightly easier to use and can be undefendable.
There is so much wrong here I don’t know where to begin. There’s also the problem that this is a ‘im cool cos i think i can troll cos i talk about trolling all the time lol lol lol’ post, which is utterly endemic in wvw from my experiences (although this has been changing lately, to be fair).
Your first post is pretty annoying, hate when that happens. But you fully admit it is NOT the thief and mesmer using teamwork but other player’s failure to catch the thief. And trust me, it is very possible to do so, in a variety of ways.
So, this board allows you to argue your case with regards to balance in wvw using very loose terms, due to poor moderation and the lack of a dedicated balance forum (no biggy, GW2 is a game for aimed primarily at casuals anyway). You’ve used it well.
Your second point is based around a group of thieves using voip to communicate. I can imagine that a group like this could cause huge devastation to large groups, especially unorganized ones. But you don’t even go there. You base your arguement around a group of lets say ‘highly organized’ players vs single players (Do I really have to elaborate here?). I will, because I actually think that this is serious and isn’t a generic ‘haha im so clever’ troll post that is so vacuous it makes me actually want to respond to the troll. To even be considered for balance discussion this group of players has to be pitted against an equal number of players, preferably with voip but not necessary.
Thief is incredibly strong in some areas, and weak in others; which is exactly how the game works. I could take your arguement and make my own…
WARRIOR IS OP
5 organized warriors with rifles and hammers can stun me and the other randoms on my server that are in my borderland omfgwtf nerf pls entire bl stun and or i unsub thx. if they arent stunning me to death cos stunbreak utilities are boring and do no dmg lols. and then when theyg et adrenaline they stagger 5 killshots using voice comms so dodging is useless omfg wtf iTS NOT FAIR.
Sorry been a long day, but this sounds familiar for a reason. Bored of seeing the kittenty complaints, and the kittenty pretend complaint troll threads cropping up all the time. If we want to cry over what should be nerfed, lets think about our reasons why x should be nerfed and put forward suggestions for consideration. That is how you discuss, and I’m bored of people thinking their attitude is right because ‘it is’ in this game.
Fun is subjective, as you realize, so the way a player chooses to play the game is fun for them. Pretty obvious as you pointed out, that people are enjoying the Living World content right now and thus not in WvW as much, or have simply ‘burnt out’ of wvw (I really hate this term but ti gets the point across).
AN should have put some functionality for guilds into WvW to keep them there, but they have been slow. Some sort of server scoreboard, or a dedicated GvG function. I hope and believe this is something they’re working on. In doing so, you would also see pve’ers venturing into WvW with their guild more frequently, making for a better WvW experience for us all.
For me, my fun in WvW is ‘fighting for my server’. However, I am not guilded, because it isn’t fun for me to wait around half the time for other people. I genuinely find it fun harassing groups of enemy players, especially the large guildballs, messing up their movement and relaying their position.
Can’t remember where I read it so you’ll have to take my word on it, but they stated they want to bring orbs back in a different way they were before. I think that this has the potential to entirely change the dynamics of a BL map so really looking forwards to it. I also think that if they are not implemented well then it could spell disaster for WvW morale…
My constructive comments/rant/rambling on what I feel would be best for the game and players.
Please not in a WvW borderland. Put in our capital city and make anyone entering the area ‘hostiled’ automatically and seen as an enemy. Or something so we can duel each other there. You can now practice vs other classes and communicate with them too, without having to confuse other members of WvW who do not agree/enjoy/want this style.
Or add a new vendor and a much larger map/mode to Spvp so we can get pve stats and roam there. Make 3-4 based on different aesthetics; A dark and misty graveyard, a woodland area, a large map covered in nothing but ruins. Make levels open up new ranges of exotics that already exist in PvE so you can gear up the same and there is a sense of progression and more importantly fullfilment that is necessary in a level based character progression mmo.
I feel this pvp is much more suited to dueling than WvW where a big part of the fun and immersion comes from the large and unexpected parts of the environment and not being confined to a boxing ring. I find it annoying when there are gvg swords on an underpopulated map. This is only AN’s fault for not providing a solid gvg function, NOT the players for providing their own content…. as criticisizing players for making their own content is batkitten crazy imo, which happens when these ad hoc duelings rings are set up somewhere they obviously don’t belong like the WvW ‘arena’ as they bring conflict due to differing interests. Some people can’t even see that there is a confliction of interests and GENUINELY BELIEVE that people should be able to duel in their own bubble without second thought. As stated, this is AN’s fault for not providing basic features for their customers.
I think they thought SPvp would get the gvg crowd and to an extent it did. But by separating different game modes by such a large gap (pve/wvw and spvp) players ended up going back to their ‘grind’ in pve because it is ultimately fulfilling rather than instantly making a new character and giving them a free amulet… this is good too, but doesn’t cater adaquately to what we are talking about, and the ‘freedom’ to choose your pvpstyle may have ended up kicking AN in the kitten in the longrun.
It would totally ruin the feel of WvW for me if polished sparkly d00l3rz are meeting up for handbags at dawn with a dueling clan tag and only dueling in a bl. And being supported by AN to exclude themselves would just be a bad decision all round when they could put a little more effort in and come up with a solution that benefits everyone while also making the game better.
I would love to hear some debate and discussion about these topics, and whether they are progressive or counter-intuitive to GW2 as a whole. The game has undoubtedly set the bar higher than anything before it in terms of combat mechanics and mmo combat fluidity (imo). I’m not willing to discuss with ‘I have x certificate in y practice in z game, therefore my logic overrides yours’ duelers who cannot reason other than say that I’m trolling to go against the grain. This. Actually. Happened.
Well usually handbags at dawn. Sometimes pistols.
