  • weapon rarity affects kit base damage multipliers
  • trait system sucks now
  • those posts are likely from before ft 1 got a 33% damage buff. ft auto now competes with rifle auto for single target dps, but it hits 3 in a cone instead of 5 in a line which is arguably better. bombs do about 50% more dps in a circle to 5, and its wayyyy better than ft once traited for larger radius.
  • have fun some with mortar then dont bother any more. crate outshines everything.

Does the actual weapons that we choose have any influence on the overall damage of our kits? Or is our weapons just buff items for either Power of Condition builds?

Phineas — Thank you for posting that guide of yours. It’s still a good source of ideas.

What in the world did they do to the Trait system? Sheesh.

After trying out rifle, pistol/pistol, pistol/shield, EG and FT, I’m finding FT to be fairly decent which I don’t understand. All the posts that I read about FT state that’s it’s terrible. I found rifle to be pretty meh followed closely by pistols. I’ve been swapping between Bomb Kit and FT while exploring the world. I’m looking forward in unlocking Toolbelt to see how that is.

I’m having a tough time trying to find some PvE leveling build suggestions that are up to date with the current patch level of the game. I’m a returning player and it looks like there are a lot of changes so I decided to start out fresh. I just reached L.31 so I unlocked the elite slot plus I’m exploring the changes that they did with the Trait window. I find it insulting that we have to spend Skill points if we purchase the trait from the NPC vendor.

As for my play style, I like AoE. So far I’ve been concentrating on Power/Percision, using Rifle, and swapping between Flamethrower and Bomb Kit. I would like to use Grenade kit, but it doesn’t look like I get the extra grenades until the end of the trait line so I went with Bomb kit.

At one point we did get him near death. The thief was on the ground with 10% health with one person attempting the death blow while the rest were hammering away at him. Suddenly he moves or blinks away from the deathblow, he’s back on his feet at 60% life and vanishes.

After two full days in WvW I gave up this class because...

I had a lot of fun with my L.60 ELE when I entered into WvW for a few hours. Armed with staff I entered our garrison to defend that one rear gate that faces the water cliff from a small invading force. I started laying out earth attacks because they’re not as flashy as the fire. After killing two and started a little panic, I started with the fire and caused them to push back. The defenders basically walked them to the very edge of the cliff where you jump down for that vista. I jumped onto a ENG mortar and launched a #5 to blow them all off the cliff. I only got 4 badges but it was a lot of fun being able to control the enemy by denying them a point of entry and knock them off a cliff.

A few nights back in WvW, I personally saw a thief take out 7 of us and then destroy a catapult. Maybe the thief was L.80 with full gear and had a lot of talent. He took his time and got the results. One guy would go down, and when we would start to rez, he would popback in and kill a rezzer and so forth. While we were laying down ELE AoE or ENG flamethrower attacks to hunt for him, he would pretty much insta kill the catapult operator.

My Mesmer PVE leveling got a whole lot easier once I reached L.40 and picked up the additional staff bounce. I put down my GS and started using the staff to tear apart mobs and my clones apply cripple upon death. Now I find my Mesmer in the 50s, I love the extra bonus XP from tearing apart mobs that are +5 in levels to me which is something which was very difficult with a GS. Last night I was getting around 100xp plus around 400xp bonus for 500xp total. I went and checked out killing mobs my level and I was only getting around 100XP total with bonus.

There were times that I was pulling unwanted aggro from 1-2 adds that were +5 in level to me. Handling a pull of two wasn’t all that bad with the staff with extra bounce, two adds was difficult in that I had to do a lot of dancing, dodges, and swapping of weapon sets to get enough clones out.

I never liked the greatsword, is it really any good?

My god Mesmer is bad in PVE

I started up a Mesmer the other day to get a better view of this class. My ENG found them highly annoying in WvW so I wanted to learn more about them. So far on the PvE side of the fence, I’m finding them very interesting once I learned that illusions are not pets, but ticking time bombs. I just reached L12 but for now I’ve been swapping between GS and Staff during events with hordes of mobs and dropping that reflect shield on those annoying ranged mobs. Man my ENG would kill for that reflect shield.

So I think I found my second class to level up with my ENG who reached L60 and got the grenadier trait. It’s a nice change of pace instead of lobbing ‘nades all day. After reading these forums, I guess I’ll start experimenting with sword/pistol instead of carrying two 2H weapons.

In WvW, I found that my grenade build to shine during an offensive siege. I can pretty much knock-out, kill or force defenders away from any part of their battlements. I wish we had some Haywire-Grenade which would disable siege equipment on their walls for a short time.

On the flip side of the siege, I find it very hard to find a spot to drop several grenades before getting a beat down. I find a spot on the wall outside of the LoS of the enemy and drop a Mortar. If it’s a small-medium siege force, I found if I launch the AoE knock back on a group of them, it can sometimes break the siege. However during a full blown siege push, the moment I get 1-2 shots off, the mortar will quickly be covered by long range AoE so I have to abandon it. At this point, I usually drop the mortar and run as a diversion slightly away from the action in a highly visible part of the wall to draw some of the attackers to it.

I’m loving the flamethrower during large ground assaults. Sometimes you can swing around and attack their flanks with flame and you can cause them to retreat back. You then hold your ground with sustained flame attacks, burn down their knocked out allies while the rest of your group revives fallen allies.

Maybe have a elite skill upgrade of Supply Drop which also provides a few pallets of WvW siege supplies? Or a elite skill that performs a super-charge upgrade to an existing siege weapon so it has better armor, life and deals more damage?

Mortar is the worst elite skill in the game.

Last night I went on my first WvW run last night and it was a lot of fun. I had a lot of LoS issue while defending a gate with my grenades & rifle. I just couldn’t get the right angle to lob nades down on the attackers. I had to move right to the side of the wall where I can get sniped easily. I finally purchased, equipped and tossed out the mortar just to see if I had any better luck. I was able to launch attacks further back and at extreme angles. It wasn’t slaughtering players, but it pushed back two dozen enemy opponents from the gate. I guess it did it’s job.

Nice video! Thank you for sharing it. I liked how the last opponent chickened out since he wasn’t an easy kill. That chicken’s leet skills must only shine in gank squads.

Question on Sigils

Now if I was using a sigil that stacks Magic Find on a rifle, does that Magic Find only count on the killing blow with the rifle? Or can I pull the mob with the rifle and then kill with grenades?

I would love to see the Mortar elite replaced with a small Steam Tank. Just juice up the mortar’s damage, range and make it fast moving. Of course let anyone ride it.

Question on Sigils

While I was testing out some sigils, I noticed ones like “Sigil of Bloodlust” only gave kill counters while I was using rifle instead of grenades. Am I just using the wrong type of sigils or do I need to rack up 25 kills first with my rifle and then switch to the grenade kit?
