The Gift of Battle

Wow the entitlement is strong still,

I used to think like you, back before I took the time to analyze it logically. Frankly, I’m more in agreement with the OP now, but not for the same reasons.
Consider the following…

  • GW2 is NOT one of the few prime MMOs out there. Quite frankly there are dozens out there, and not all on PC, but console, and mobile.
  • The design of legendaries while intended to encourage people to go outside their realm of comfort and try new things, this really is NOT a design of carrot, this is a design of stick.
  • Experiences of WvW, PvP, and PvE are all different, of which person abilities, play times, server, guild relations, play skill, and their computer’s ability to play the game all factor in. Essentially, every user’s experience will be different and all points are valid.

When I take into consideration all of this, what I determine is that the design is flawed.
Why do we play games? Generically, to have fun.

  • When we are forced outside the “realm of fun” for us, that reduces fun and also can put a “bad taste in our mouth” about the game that is hard to get rid of. (please note I said can. experience is different per user.)
  • Once the bad taste is present, it will pollute further “fun” in a game.
  • once a game is no longer fun, people leave looking for new fun.

People who leave generate no monies for the game. Therefore you want to remove as much “bad taste” from the game as possible to keep people playing, but enough challenge to make it feel rewarding. Aka you’ve got to work the addiction factor.
The hard part about this is that there is also a need to cater to the people sticking around also. So it is a hard line to make happen.
This is where game design runs afoul of beancounter profits. No profits means no job.

And while the Gift of Battle is the focus of the OP, I would imagine it is the Gift of Exploration for the PvP/WvW folks.

Is there a better way over all to design it? To make it fun and keeping to the original intention? Frankly I don’t see it.
Is there a way it could be augmented? Sure. (pvp/wvw) A special one time track could be done. (pve) A special one time quest set that uses a lot of spirit shards perhaps? There are means to make that first legendary more in reach for the AVERAGE player without taking away from the whole.

Last note, I see so many people say it only takes 4-6 hours to get a GoB… Remember, what I stated in my 3rd bullet. User experience varies. It took me about a month to get my GoB via reward track playing WvW every day about an hour each day due to my time and server, and that included Edge. It sucks to be me and that is why I don’t go after legendaries much at all.

Hey guys, I noticed that the maroon dye isn’t maroon.

Maroon dye in the game is currently Tyrian purple https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrian_purple

Maroon colour is supposed to look like this http://www.color-hex.com/color/800000

Hex color huh?
Funny that per them, Maroon is this.

My first thought was Dwyna, but when you look at the color scheme…

It reminds me more of the Auric weapons, but mostly the Auric ascended backpack. That thing has such odd metal and coloration it is near impossible to dye armor to match.

The feather style is deff more Kas though.

Ultimate thoughts… The designer done screwed up colors leading us all on wild thoughts.

Leather Farm

It seems like a ‘leather farm’ to me; it doesn’t seem to drop anything else. Maybe players are confusing ‘T6 Leather farm’ with just ‘leather farm’. /shrug

I would agree it does appear to be a “leather farm.”

It also appears to me that players, once again, have applied their own thinking to what “leather farm” is. A good majority of posters seem to indicate that any “farming” should be able to be done solo. Esp those not blocked by events.

So much could be saved in rage if people would stop being so short with descriptions. I guess this is a sign of people being lazy, using twitter, etc.

Example: “AB Multi-loot.” Short and to the point, but lacks lot of details in how it really works. “AB event chest farming via map hopping.” Is longer but much easier to understand.

Alternate example: http://www.the-whiteboard.com/autowb450.html

With the Doric Lake leather farming, all people hear is “leather farming” which honestly is misleading to a degree. It really is “DL squad/zerk required, leather farming” as a standard party of 5 or less will for the most part get slaughtered.

Do I expect players to change with their verbage? Nope. Do I expect people to continue to get upset because they are not explaining their personal terminology? Yeap. Do I suffer the same issues? Of course. We have the wonderful and terrible issue of trying to shove as much as possible into as little amount of work/space that we can.

GW2 is not a tabletop roleplaying game. The Devs gain nothing out of making the players fail, but they do stand to lose a ton. This is simply not applicable to an MMO development.

No it is not a role playing game. However, both management and developers are people therefore have emotions just as much as we do.

As Shakespeare once spoke via Merchant of Venice… “If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?”

ANET can very well use a stick that looks like a carrot without causing overbearing detriment to their cash flow. There is a whole lot of psychology used with MMOs to make people addicted.

They don’t solve any of your problems perhaps. Don’t assume what you think is truth for everyone.

They created an explicit area to farm leather that is objectively not good for farming leather, that’s almost laughably incompetent.

I honestly no longer think it is incompetence.

Given some of the design changes (base Tyria compared to HoT), I find it harder and harder to believe that it is incompetence, but a deliberate implementation of ANET vs Players.

If you ever role play (table top games.) you may have experienced the mindset that can happen of GMs vs Players, aka them vs us. Most of the time that is not very productive for either side.

Honestly, on some of the more audio annoying ones, I think they should make the legendary noise happen on a crit and the default weapon type noise by default. But given network lag, just make the noise happen on the shot after the crit hit so the sound effect matches animation timing.

Cost of shared inventory slots

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: OneYenShort.3189

OneYenShort.3189

Shared inventory slots are an incredible useful QoL feature. But does anyone else here think the cost is maybe a little too high?

You always pay for usefulness.
Primary—
1. You pay for usefulness.
2. It is not a consumable.
3. People wanted a direct way to share space between characters for a long time. (in particular for the sharing of unlimited tools because people did not want to buy 1 set per character)
Secondary—
4. While I may not have the gold, several people do have gold just laying around to convert to gems.
5. Additional data storage space required.
6. verify no database corruption will occur.

You factor in all of that, and don’t forget bean counter input, and whala… you get the price and the price breaks for bulk buying.
While I am big into storage, the price is such that I have not bothered to get all of them myself.

I want to gather some info on this.
Can you post your experiences? Maybe like this:

  1. I can complete the activity in the festival area.
  2. I can complete the activity, but not in the festival area, only outside the festival area.
  3. I cannot complete the activity.

I can not complete the activity in the festival area.

Games are supposed to be fun. This, this is nothing but a frustration.

Back in the original Lion’s Arch, the Dolyak required protection from skritt. Not just from the foot based melee shiney package grabbers. No, not just them, but also from skritt turret animals pelting back to stop the dolyak and its protectors. Those skritt were the ones that people could hit. That is what allowed such an event to be done as intended!
And… there was also a lone skritt out among the other denizens of the old Lion’s Arch that you could also hit. I felt bad for him, yes… but he served a purpose!

Now? Now we are left with throwing futility as rat faced thieves are kicked viciously out of the way of well aimed shots. The futility of striking random snow jackers that get in our line of fire as we valiantly attempt to protect the packages for the children. The fact that nere-do wellers block our attempts at successfully completing achievements, granting us joy…. It is quite disheartening, yes?

clears throat sorry. I’ve been watching Babalyon 5 again, so I fear I was writing that up as if Londo Mollari was speaking and hearing it in his voice.

It is only in these ending days that a friend showed me how to successfully complete it by going into Tixx’s dungeon, running to the back and around, using snowball packages, and then pelting a sentry skritt to finish the achievement.

It does not help that the only way you can tell if you’ve hit or not is by watching your count directly. There are no visible ques for a hit on them.

Why A New Race Is Highly Possible [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: OneYenShort.3189

OneYenShort.3189

You don’t understand so I’ll break it down into generic management. Do note that I would love to see another race added. (skritt and tengu top my personal list.)

“Players want a new race.” gives no measurable metric what so ever.

New race = new story,

Yes. How many man hours will that take? (aka cost)

new lore,

No new lore here most likely. The new playable race will most likely be a race already in existence. So this “lore” most likely falls into “story.”

new locations,

Agreed. How many man hours to create it? (aka cost)

new achievements,

Agreed. How many man hours to create it? (aka cost)

new customization options.

I am assuming you mean skin applicability? Or are you talking racial skining looks during creation? Because actual customization (at least how I’m thinkign in my head with skills and such.) is the same across the game. The counter is still the same. How many man hours to create it? (aka cost)

Well… so far you have spent a lot of money, but shown nothing for recouping or making profit.

All this is exciting to new/old players.

Opinion and not a usable metric. How many players are you estimating? How many players do you think you can get to come back to the game?

Most people will create a new character (sell more character slots) of the said race to try it out

Agreed on the idea of selling character slots. But how many of those do you estimate will convert gold to gems to gain the slot? On average how many players still have slots open that are active? What is the actual forcast of gem sales? Honestly, probably not that high. Maybe a spike in the first month then what? This sounds more like a bonus, not a true means of profit.

and go through it’s story = more participation.

This is an opinion and feel good statement even if logical. Do you have any data that other players seeing more players will increase sales? Megaserver was profitable because it allowed contractual changes to account for spikes and dips of players so that only what is needed is ideally being paid for. (that is at least one theory of it. There are of course many more.)

They can design new things for them and put them in the gemstore (for example if it’s largos – new aquabreather/fins skins for everyone). It also adds diversity to the world.

Can design = more man hours, more cost. as of such, those sorts of items are external of this discussion. While it can play a factor, gem store creation items are stand alone because the effort that goes into their creation must pay for their cost and gain a profit. This idea adds little in the argument of profits gained with/for a new race to be created.

Not to mention ‘new race’ sounds like a good selling point for an expansion.

Agreed 100% on this one. But again, there is no metric data to support how much it could increase sales of an expansion.

You see, nearly each point got questioned, and all in the realm of cost or profit of which you did not answer any of them with actual metrics. And in most cases none of us really can answer it because it requires data that only ANET is privy to. This is why these sorts of threads really only server to keep players hopes and disappointments livid. We don’t have the information necessary to make a really compelling presentation for profit.
Heck… where I work, management was so scared of an improvement I wanted to put into the product that would save 6 man hours on average per product released even though I built it up on my own time and proved it worked so it cost them nothing extra other than roughly 1 man hour to add it into the production base and have it reviewed. I can only imagine how hard it would be to make a case for a new race at ANET.

Also consider the likely hood of a new race with the next expansion, in my opinion, is highly unlikely. So maybe in the one after that? I put forth earlier that it may be about 3 years before that could be released. Great…. The player base will not be the same as it is now. Profit margins will be harder an tighter. It will be even more difficult to convince management that a new race would “keep the game alive” for the cost of the work.

So no, what I expect is that more potions will come about such that we could fight “normally” while looking like another race via potions. I believe this is what they did with Koda in the last update wasn’kitten

They did dialogues for minor races in HoT, was that a problem?…..

You and many others list off work to be done. Fine, dandy, and we all agree work can be done.

I’m still waiting for someone to propose how they can make a profit off that large amount of work.
Saying “expansion” really is a cop out as that is always the point of an expansion. But if you really want to go that route, put the work in terms that management will understand = greater profit because of the additional work that has to go into an expansion besides just a new race.

“Players want a new race.” gives no measurable metric what so ever.

Guys guys lets be rational.

Yes, let’s be rational.

I completely agree, 100%, with your title statement. It is indeed highly possible.

However, it is highly unlikely/improbable that such will happen. As you have agreed on the work, I want you to now actually conceive the man hours involved. Now don’t forget QA, management, and lawyers (new contracts and such.) Now add in the cost of those man hours, and do not forget about the other parts of pay. (health insurance and other benefits.)

Now that you have a large monetary value to think through, the next step. How do you propose to ANET now how they can recoup such a cost and make a profit?
The obvious easy idea is to bundle such within an expansion cost. However, that has to be built into the expansion, but not an add in later. So I highly doubt any such effort will have been made for the 2nd expansion. So within the next 1-1.5 years? I think not. Within 3 years, perhaps.

I also believe you poohooed the actual cost of skin creation a bit too much. Consider the fact they release more outfits than skins unless it is part of an expansion any more.

So while they are fully capable, I don’t see the profit margin for the effort a high enough value to convince them.

My mouse is dying and is AN fault

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: OneYenShort.3189

OneYenShort.3189

there is no reason why we are forced to open stuff with an autoclicker or buying a new mouse more often.

Actually it is the reverse of your thinking.

There is no incentive for ANET (or other companies) to make things less click happy once the base “click” function is coded.

Quality of life can always be over ruled by the bean counting additional cost of development/testing.

As ANET is a U.S. company, until there becomes a set of standards that is federal law regarding repetitive motion and video/phone games, there is next to no monetary incentive for a game company to have bulk opening. All that exists is “good will” and that seldom helps companies make more monies.

Opinion: It seems that most programmers look at the bulk opening issue in the standard of bag space and over flowing inventory. There is a simpler solution. Once a character’s bag has less than or equal to X amounts of slots free, stop opening them. This allows the player to deal with a “full bag” and still be able to deconstruct items, etc. without the notification of “your bag is full.”
Another issue, depending upon design of the game, could be the data traffic interaction in such a rampt fashion that could possibly cause server issues. Several players are obviously using macros and auto clickers currently, but that does not mean the majority do, and it would take a majority to see/cause server issues.

edit: I have replaced my mouse to to button’s dying due to gaming 3 times in the last 20 years. (working towards my 4th currently as this one is starting to show signs) But I’ve been through probably 6 keyboards as a comparison. None due to “liquid” death and only one due to gamer rage (I will never buy a Saitech again. Seriously, the space bar, not the button portion, the plastic bar broke!)
It may be that some players need to invest in a mouse that is designed for gaming vs. a cheep off the shelf one.

I believe her point was to not go all vigilantly on a player in case it was an issue of “oops”, not that griefing was allowed.

However, I do believe she underestimates how rampt it really is. Also without tools to prove one way or another, there is precious little than anecdotal, perception biased, commentary on the forums. (my stance on this matter has already been stated.)

However, I most certainly do have issues where if you are not the one hit, you still end up “in combat” slow down.

Aka if a ranger pet, elemental summon, necro minons, rune/sigil summons get hit, YOU are the one slowed down. I flatly disagree with that. Until my character itself is hit or does the hitting, my character should not be forced into “in combat” speed.

I think these instances are pretty rare, for I play the game for hours every night, and a lot on the weekends, and I can’t remember this happening more than once or twice. I also happen to believe that many if not most are accidental, and not a form of griefing.

Yet with that same frame of time reference, and I’m close to your time (CST) I see it at least once a week. With a maximum once of 6 times in one evening.

Mind you I also place Mesmer Portals done in this manner in the same form of greifing. Of which my max count above was no portal inclusion, and the last time I saw a mes portal done in this manner was a few months back at the Destroyer world boss in Mt. Maelstrom.

Will some players do it by accident? Sure. We gave our guild leader no end of greif when he goofed and stuck a flag right on the hole in the chicken run guild mission.

But given what I seen.. I’d say about 90%-92% of the ones I’ve seen are on purpose.
Remember that there have been many studies, let alone behavior of the net that when there is zero chance of repercussions, people that would normally not be inclined to be mean are much more inclined to be so.

You (the OP) feel this is a significant issue. Many have disagreed with your assessment, but the thread remains on the forums and, if the dev team agrees that this needs to be added to the “to do” list, they will make that happen.

Many? This hasn’t even hit a 2nd page and you consider this small insignificant sample that means squat to be “many”??? You are making goofs this time.

2: You forget that the you can teleport back to the wurm. This is a very powerful “get out of dodge” ability. Like most skills, situational. But this skill does not need to be changed.

3: The primary use of this one I’ve found is to increase your minion count which can grant additional benefits if you are traited for such. Wish it would summon more than two when you consider that 4 are created when you use Litch form elite skill. (that may be a traited thing as well, I can’t remember.)

I’ll be honest and tell you I don’t know of any. To make matters absolutely worse, what gets released with tinting, shading, etc. due to “materials” often won’t even match the original colors released.

Case in point, the Auric Backpack. I have found NO shade/armor combination that will match it exactly. I’ve gotten close but that is the best I can do.
The artists can create some wonderful looking stuff but they never put it up against the rest of the stuff to see if can actually match what things look like in game. So from this aspect, all the skins in the world… and they all look like dog vomit because of special for them (skin in question) rendering.

Anyway, enough of my complains. This is the best I can do to help. Good luck.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

What you all want is not true randomness, it is equal distribution instead.

Exactly. But it is also easy to see why. So many MMOs, this one included, always talk about how they are doing their best to make the game fair, to make the game balanced. Well, RNG is just about the opposite of that.

RNG is not fair at all. So it is no wonder that people have this perception that isn’t correct.

They put in a direct way to get Precursors (while really fluffing the heck out of it due to lack of checking for quality in development. Seriously, the developer/s should have got each and every one of those issues if they actually bothered to properly test it.) But when you consider “perceived” value vs. cost to make yeap… fairness pops its ugly head up again.

Every account has the exact same chance on RNG.

You are not a developer, so you may need to check, but I would take that to mean that every account uses the exact same RNG bases, and all RNG bases in game uses the same seed value.

Would that be a correct statement?

Now granted if the seed is the hardware of the server in question itself, then all bets are out the window as the likely hood of server hardware being identical is next to nill. (hard drives die, and NICs have to have different MAC address, etc.)

Heck, I’d just like it if they put in a toggle such that when activated it displayed what my FPS is.

I freaking HATE, absolutely HATE, the fact that to see this information I have to open up the options panel. That takes up a huge amount of screen realestate. other wise the only other time it can be displayed on the screen (that I know of) is during loading screen.

OH yeah… keeping track of a still image and showing off FPS then is really impressive I tell you.

Do accounts have "luck", and is it right?

There is no such thing as unlucky or lucky accounts. There is nothing in your account that dooms you to bad RNG and nothing in your friend’s account that blesses their account with good RNG.

In so far as this goes with ANET and GW2, that is the best we do know. However it has been proven in the past that in some games, there are oops such that one’s account DID have an effect on game behavior.
If I can recall correctly, Turbine back with Asheron’s Call actually did have a flag on an account that if set did cause that account to get more agro than a tricked out agro magnet styled character.

First off, no RNG ever made can be truly random.

Such accepted as truly random devices do exist, but for an MMO they are prohibitively expensive.

Now something that was mentioned by a guildie a few nights ago made me pause. We players have zero clue how the RNG we use is seeded. Is it the same RNG seed for everyone? Is it per player/account? Is it per character? We have no clue. We can only assume that the RNG being used is the same for each player but the seed value will change the order of outcome (for utter lack of a better term.)

Anet wants to stop supporting and don’t want people to run dungeons any more. Which has half screwed up people wanting to earn original legendaries.

My opinion is that while I don’t have have an issue with the gold drop being reduced, they really should have increased token reward for completion to compensate for the change.

How about a glider that we can earn in game and not on the gem store!

There is if you can stomach PvP. So as is said in other games.

Wish granted!

When the last time you felt thrilled in PvE?

PvE…. only loot that really stood out for me when was I pulled Dusk.

In this game I seldom have had thrills of the adrenaline rush kind. Last time I really had that in a game was in DDO when all sorts of stuff hit the fan and we still won.

But what do I really enjoy… when more lore bits are fleshed out for us. More story, back story, history, or even plot lines moving forward. These bits I do seek out.

I feel accomplishment not by getting mastery points, not by XP… I outgrew that sort of “carrot”… a decade ago roughly. I feel good when I can pull something that someone needs. Helping friends/guildies/utter strangers who need help in meeting their goals. I feel accomplishment in a completion of a goal such as crafting a legendary. (The new legionaries I’ve taken one look at and said “No.” with a capital Grumpy Cat.)

Golem MKII safe spot exploit

How’s it not an exploit when you can stand on the boxes (and tower) to avoid nearly all damage but still be able to damage the golem? It’s really no different to the exploits people used to use in AC with the stairs, and then that ledge, to beat the bosses.

Tactically speaking, if I can choose a point where if the enemy chooses to aim its big guns at me as well as their own assets aka the Tower, darn skippy I’m going to make the enemy make that hard choice. Me and their stuff, or a bunch of other folks while I dent the living heck out of their gun.

Yes, I know it is a video game.

Could we get DX12 with the next expansion

Maybe when Windows 10 (and apparently takes over the market completely. Dx12 means squat for most of us because of that very reason. Right now it looks like… maybe that comprises 25%-29%. I certain that gamers don’t make up the majority of that percentage.

Management probably looks at market share numbers. I do not know if GW2 reports back OS versions for them to make a determination that way.

"Taken" names

Having multiple accounts have the exact same character name might work in games where there are separate servers or realms where you dont interact or see others outside your server, but it would be a big problem in a game like this. Unless you’re saying each and every character name would always have the display name and number attached to it, even in chat. That would be long, ugly, and most people would dislike that. Even WoW, which allows people to have the same char name, only allows it on separate servers. If you switch servers to one where someone has the same name, you have to change yours.

It’s a bad idea.

1. You actually get blind to it. See Champions Online.
2. What gets displayed are simple strings. It again is beginner coding to be able to reduce what is obviously displayed vs what is actually used (say if you right clicked on a name.)

Now you are welcome to your opinion, but it is a worse idea to continue to make names so restrictive in any game any more. Also I’m not calling for GW2 to make changes to its current system. I’m just calling the design Anet chose to use stupid, and have been calling such designs stupid for the last decade.

BTW, if I’m remembering correctly, look at your friend’s list or even the guild page to see who is online. It doesn’t just list character names does it.

What happens then if there are 1000 chars named John in the game and you want to email one of them but only know that the name is John? What happens if someone sends items to John but instead the items go to John? Support won’t help in this sort of situation. They’ve already said emailed items are considered gifts.

Oh, I don’t know John@Bruno.3812. How could a schema be made that could fit it? I just don’t know…

Frankly such name locks should NEVER be implemented in multiplayer games at all. The time for what that beginning programer level design offers left years (if not decades) back.

It is one level of “realism” that I wish more games would be more cognizant about implementing.
I have zero issues if companies want to make it such that per your account, you can only have unique character names. Aka. Both Player A and Player B could have a character called “John”, but neither A nor B could have a second character named “John”.

Heh... Dungeons...

They should have increased the token awards. Thing is, Anet explicitly doesn’t want people to run dungeons anymore. They just didn’t have the balls to cut them entirely, so they gutted their rewards to encourage people to buy HoT drive people towards fractals.

My opinion is that they nerfed the gold to limit F2P people farming gold with great ease. After all you get a good team, you could dungeon farm and get more gold than what you can out of fractals because of the gold lock behind daily trash.

Fractals you have to work up your AR and reward levels. Dungeons, not so much.

If I’m right, that is not a world event. You’ll have to go into Fractals to do it.
